Dog waste onthe moor endI WAS pleased that Phil Heys raised the issue of dog fouling both in Barningham village and on the moor, but dismayed that you consented to publish a sneering anonymous contribution in the March edition of The Flyer. Probably worse than the condescending attitude was that the contributor did not have the courage to give his or her name.
It is obvious that over the last few years more people are using Barningham Moor to exercise their dogs without taking on the social responsibility of cleaning up their dog’s mess.
The first part of the moor is now a most unpleasant place to walk, as it involves trying to avoid walking in dog excreta. This is not giving a good impression to walkers and also puts all dog owners in a bad light.
There needs to be a notice at the entrance to the moor (where many park their cars) informing dog walkers of their obligation to clean up after their pets. The green bin, which can be mistaken for a container for domestic waste, should have a notice indicating its purpose.
STEF OTTEVANGERTHE law on overhanging trees or shrubs on a garden boundary is quite specific, you can cut back anything overhanging but you must give the pruned material or gathered fallen fruit back to your neighbour. It is not yours and compliance to the law requires the return of their property.
I see no reason why it can’t be extrapolated from this to include
cat and dog poo, though I would suggest the use of a trail camera to capture the offending animal. Ballistically I’m not aware how the offending turd can be assigned to any particular animal’s bowels without evidence.
It would be nice if “crap alley” on the moor between the first cattle grid and the ford could be cleaned up so families can picnic, play ball games, or simply fly a kite without risk. Returning the material back to the rightful owner may be a way forward.
MALCOLM HOCKHAMTHE anonymous rhyming letter was clever and could be seen as an amusing take on a mundane subject, but it also implies that dog owners bear less responsibility for the pooch’s turds than do innocent pedestrians. Surely this is cart before horse country (and at least horse-muck is useful in horticulture).
As to needing more bins, let the author come to the Parish Meeting with a proposal; but perhaps they want to stay anonymous. Do they lack the courage of their convictions or do they lack community spirit and awareness?
PHIL HUNT
THE anonymous poem about dog waste in the last Flyer provoked more letters than anything else in the nine years we’ve been running, and those published here have had to be edited to fit them in.
Readers who castigated us for publishing an anonymous letter might like to know that we are aware of the writer’s identity. We don’t plan to accept anonymity again without very good reason. – Editor
I FOUND an unwell-looking hedgehog on the allotments, so took him home in a box and called the excellent hedgehog rescue (07906 580326). It turned out he’d had all the toes on the front legs cut off by a strimmer, so could not dig effectively for his food.
The injury was from last year and he was under-weight because he hadn’t put on enough weight for proper hibernation. Sadly he’s since died. Please check long grass before you strim or mow. PHIL HUNT
Please check for hedgehogs before you mow
