Ex-Boyfriend is an indie clothing label out of that hot-bed of artistic creativity and baseball sadness, Baltimore. Created as the brain-child of illustrator/designer Matt Snow while he was still in college, dreaming a little dream of being thisgeneration'sgeneration's Don Draper (the socially-acceptable day-time drunkenness part, not the philandering identity theft part) at some schmancy New York ad agency, he pretty soon realized that he'd rather help people get laid (himself included).

And so he put pen to paper and mouse to pad and three years later has an expansive line of illustrations and designs printed on all manner of clothing (mostly tees and hoodies) and accessories (mostly bottle openers, and messenger bags with which tosurreptitiouslysurreptitiously carry around many beers to then open with said bottle openers; it is the circle of life). Matt thought, “Why not create clothes that act as icebreakers at house parties and bars so I can keep drinking have something to discuss with the hottie across the room?” And so he did.

MattMatt works in partnership with an independent print shop to bring his designs to life, using only the most eco-friendly printing processes and materials to bring you clothes that feel good and you can feel good about wearing. As if that weren't enough, he's also anextremelyextremely active animal rights advocate, donating 5% of all his profits to the SPCA and other shelters and rescue organizations.

Matt also has an extremely interactive website to stay connected with his customers; check out his blog(ex-boyfriendcollection.com/blog), friend him onFacebook (facebook.com/exboyfriend), or follow himonon Twitter (twitter.com/xboyfriend) for some hilarious/great/life-changing posts about kittens, puppies, and booze. And of course, he loves to subvert his own attempts to support himself, so sign up for his newsletter to get info about new designs, deals and discounts. In fact, if you happen upon him out in the real “we eat in restaurants, not dining halls” world, he mightmight just give you the shirt off his back—he's done it before!

“Make sure that everyday you eat

more of the healthy stuff

Terry and Mary, makers of the Intention Cookies, would like to help eradicate the “Freshman 15:” the extra 15 lbs that many stu-dents gain in their freshman year of college. You may ask, “how can a cookie help me not gain weight?” Well, the Intention Cookie is a vegan, healthy alternative to the standard snack fare found in freshman dorm rooms. snack fare found in freshman dorm rooms.

The “Freshman 15” horror stories are numer-ous: beautiful, fit high school cheerleader fin-ishes freshman year overweight by 15 lbs and counting; chunky high school student turns obese freshman year; student, with no prior

weight problems, turns to eating disorder to combat freshman weight gain; and the list con-tinues. Are you destined to be one of these sto-ries? You don’t have to be.

Take charge of your eating now. Keep a good stock of healthy snacks in your room. Fresh-men are famous for eating a lot of junk food. It’s no wonder, because it is the most conve-nient “food” on or around any college campus. You don’t have to fall into that trap.Take a moment before youget too busy or toomunchie, find yourhealthy snacks andstash them in yourroom. The importantthing here is variety. For instance, if youchoose to stock somechoose to stock someIntention Cookies youmust also stock some other

types of healthy snacks that you like such as healthy candies, health bars, vegan ice cream, etc. You do not want to get bored of eating the same thing. Mix it up.

OneOne of the big problems is the lack of veggies and fresh fruit consumed by freshmen. There has to be a vegetable that you can stomach. Think about it. An easy way to keep some in your room is to find some good marinated veg-gies and stock those. If you are the kind of person that has to eat whatever crazy food your friendsfriends are having when you are with them, eat only the super healthy stuff when you are not with them. That can help you offset the damage.

Do not forget to hydrate. You are mostly water, so you want to keep that stuff flowing. Water will help move all those good vitamins and min-erals that you are eating through your body keeping it in tact. Keep all other drinks to a minimum. Be sure to drink more water than you do of any other beverage.

There is a good chance that during your fresh-man term you are going to ingest something that is way less than healthy. The key is bal-

ance. Make sure that everyday you eat more of the healthy stuff than you do the unhealthy stuff…a lot more. We would love it if everyone would just be healthy, vegans. That would help us get rid of a lot of this country’s health issues. Barring that, a diet of 70% raw fruits and vegetables will help maintain a good body and mind. And that will help us eradicate the “Freshman 15.”

Imagine a parasitic insect small enough to call a cock-roach its predator. It burrows in the depths of your dorm room for days without needing to feed, and it only re-veals itself a half-hour before dawn to feed on your blood in 5-minute intervals, virtually insuring that you will never wake up in order to detect it. If welts begin ap-pearing on your body (possibly in threes), it's highly likely your dorm has been infested with BEDBUGS for weeks, maybe even months. The bites can take over a week before they begin to itch and form on your body.

This was the case for first-year student Colin Camp-bell while attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His living situation was familiar to anyone who has ever lived in a dorm. Campbell was a highly active student in the School of Music, he lived in a single, which was kept as organized as any college student could hope for. Bedbugs are drawn to their prey by carboncarbon dioxide emission or the natural warmth that their bodies emit. Unfortunately for college students we are highly prone to bedbug infestations no matter how clean we keep our living environments. Bedbugs are attracted to us because we live in large housing fa-cilities with plenty of other potential victims.

Many students simply aren't aware of the likelihood of an infestation because for a long time bedbugs were eliminated as a threat by pesticides that were used in cleaning products during the 1940's and 50's. As people became more aware of the dangers of these products they were used less and less in our own living environments. While it is advantageous to not breathbreath in these harmful chemicals, it has also caused a resurgence of bedbug problems throughout the

USA. In fact the problem has been growing steadily for fifteen years since 1995! Officially the problem has increased 71% over the past five years, but as most cases can't even be officially recorded it's safe to assume that it is actually a much greater problem. And because bedbugs are rarely detected due to the timing of their feeding patterns, they can cause devas-tating etating effects.

Bedbugs can add anxiety to the already stress-ridden life of the student. In some cases it can even cause in-somnia. This is exactly what happened to Colin Camp-bell. During a week where he had three finals he found himself unable to sleep or even concentrate. This is something I had the opportunity to talk about with Richard Saffern from BEDBUGS.COM. His company looks at protecting all types of people from bedbugs. Their company provides specific products for students away at school and allows you to sleep without worry-ing about what might be feeding on your flesh in the middle of the night.

More information can be found about bedbugs at www.epa.gov.

ARCADE FIRESuburbsSuburbsSuburbs officially released in August, but anyone who wanted to could hear it long before that time. The band released tracks on vinyl earlier in the summer and it's unique appeal hit critics and listeners alike. Virtually every music publication praised it even before the album came out on the shelves.shelves. BBC hailed it as arguably better

than Radiohead's OK Computer. Perhaps Arcade Fire's greatest achievement is their ability to shape each album into it's own uniformly conceived statement. Citing Depeche Mode and Neil Young as their strongest influences on the record, one can certainly hear both in this set of songs. Aesthetically Arcade Fire have always sounded like a dark new wave band placed two decades later. "I want to guard her while I'm still

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENEForgiveness Rock RecordKevinKevin Drew must be the busiest man in the Canadian Indie Rock scene. After the self-titled LP, Broken Social Scene "presented" two solo albums. Drew is as much a producer as he is a songwriter, but his best albums are Broken Social Scene albums. Forgiveness Rock Record follows in this flawless line of records as another excel-lent installment to Broken Social Scene's career. "We got a minefield of crippled affection" says Drew in the first line on the album. His image is haunting and grandiose, and with the army of incredible musicians that comprises the band, I imagine BSS will never shy away from creating these songs for a long time to come.

BIG BOI - Sir Lucious Left Foot... The Son of Chico DustyIt'sIt's been four years since Idlewild and seven years since OutKast's last studio release. Big Boi found himself in the midst of changing labels and worked on Sir Lucious etc. over a few years before finally finishing and releas-ing in in 2010. In this case the timing of the album is perfect. The beats and Big Boi's

unpredictableunpredictable phrasing and rhyme schemes create an entertaining listen that plays well during the summer months. Songs like Shutterbug play out effortlessly while managing to be melodic and rhythmically inventive.

M.I.A./ \ / \ / \ Y / \AA few summers ago I had the good fortune to see M.I.A. in Detroit on her tour supporting the release of her incredible second album Kala. At the end of the concert she said "There's too many abandoned buildings here Detroit. Take back your abandoned buildings." The message might have been for the citizens of DetroitDetroit to take action and rebuild their city, but it was an ill-informed, mis-placed last line for the concert (which she played to 90% white high school kids from the suburbs). Now M.I.A. has had a rough summer, but no one would be nearly so harsh if she didn't present herself as something she is clearly not qualified to be. Upon receiving an in depth and less-than-flattering character analysis from one NY Times columnist, she posted his phone number on her Twitter account. This is not a great idea when you want to be taken seriously as a radical political activist as well as a musician. The gesture was petty and the album that followed was all the more disappointing because M.I.A. fans were forced to realize that maybe all M.I.A's revolution-ary hyperbole is a room of smoke and mirrors designed to distract us from the fact that she's just another pop artist who should stick to making music.

EMINEMRecoveryEminemEminem is on tour with Jay-Z this year. That will definitely be worth hearing. His album, which came out in late June, is unfortu-nately not. It's hard to say why exactly Eminem lost his edge. He was the most controversial artist in the country for years. His multiple personas and disturbingly vivid imageryimagery used to inspire us as much as it

shocked us. I remember the first time I heard the Marshall Mathers LP.I kept alternating listening to Stan and Real Slim Shady. How could one person write those two songs? He seemed equally able to depict the terrible, misconstrued effects his music could have on his fans and a few tracks later make a joke of the entire media-backlash that surrounded him. Eminem was never supposed to become boring. He could make the juvenile intellectual and his contradictions were just flaws designed to make him all the more interesting and mysterious. He can hate the criticscritics all he wants, but sooner or later Shady needs to put out another good album if he wants us to keep listening.

young/I want to hold her, show her some beauty before this damage is done/If it's too much to ask show me a sign." Perhaps the best part of Suburbs is how flawlessly it will transition into a great autumn record as well.

Are you a high school pass out and just entered the college, and thinking of new relationships in life. You might be asking yourself – is it fair enough to go for a college dating or not? Just read on to discover what is good and what is bad about the col-lege dating.

Like everything, college trading has its own advantages and disadvantages. Remember, you are starting a new life in col-lege; you are going to get an extra amount of freedom, which you never got when you were a child or when you were a teen-ager. Many of us live away from our parents and pursue college somewhere else. We are away from the parental guidance and whatever decision we take, we will be held accountable for. So, you always need to take an extra precaution to date someone.

To start dating in college, first select the person, whom you are compatible with. Most of the time, it could be someone from your class with whom you study, you meet him daily and is one of your good friends, but some of us choose to date our professors. Dating the pro-fessors could be risky, as it could be a matter of gossip among your friends, but the same cannot be avoided when you are dating your classmate.avoided when you are dating your classmate.

The biggest advantage of dating in a college is that you get a feeling that you are matured enough and helps you to understand what you need out of your life. Dating could be inexpensive, but since you are a college goes, your partner does not expect you to take her to a high class restaurant everyday. There are various ways to impress her – give her a flower, writewrite poetry to praise her, take her to a budget res-taurant or spend some time with each other in a movie theater. But in case your partner wants something more from you, then you may need to shell out some extra money to maintain the rela-tionship.

Another important advantage of dating while you are in college is that you get a feeling that you are important among your friends. You get an extra

...you may land yourself in trouble if youdo not take extra precaution...“

importance among your friend circle, but at the same time, your friends do not stop gossiping about you when you are into trouble or have bad time with your relation.

AnAn important positive point about dating in college is that you can maintain sexual relationship with each other and will not be a layman at the time of your marriage. But the negative point is that, you may land yourself in trouble if you do not take extra precaution and don’t use condoms. Most of these relations are short lived and people may end up nowhere, if they do not care for these precau-tions.

Well, finally, I would like to say that whether you want to enter into any relationship or not is entirely on your choice, but college dating

forms an important role in the development of an individual. If it is done cautiously, you can certainly end up with a successful relation.

The Pros and Cons of

College Dating

Page 28: The Back To School Issue

Follow up with people you want to hang out with.Don't expect people to call you““

EVERY YEAREVERY YEARkids find themselves homesick or lonely when they enter college. They expect to make friends instantly and they are discouraged when they haven't made best friends after their first semester. The truth is that col-lege is a difficult atmosphere to make the same sort of bonds one had with their friends in high school. It's easy to feel like you'll never make the friends you thought you would after the first year, but mostly it just takes time.

A lot of students will return home on weekends if they live close enough to their school. They sometimes will have long phone calls with their high school friends or boyfriend/girlfriend. But the friends you can make at college often end up being your best friends, and it is likely you will lose touch with your high school friends more and more as the years ware on. The trick is finding ways to make these friends.

FirstFirst of all make sure you introduce yourself around your hall when you first move into your dorm. Some of my best friends from school I made freshman year just watching Adult Swim late on school nights while we did our homework. At first we just watched the shows, but as we continued to do this into the next semester of school we started to learn more about each other and develop lasting bonds and friendships. Recently I just watched one of those friends get married and I remember thinking "this all started by watching Harvey Birdman every weeknight at the same time."

Don'tDon't be afraid to branch out. A lot of kids who did things in high school assume they won't be good enough to continue doing the same things in college because there will be more competition. It's true that in college it's harder to stand out in one group, but there are also a ton of more opportunities as a result. If you played baseball in high school but didn't make the team in college look for intramural leagues. It will be filled with people just like you who love talking about the sport and are looking for people to connect with.

FollowFollow up with people you want to hang out with. Don't expect people to call you. In college you won't see people if you don't make the effort. Your classes won't be together, you won't have homeroom. You just need to make the extra effort to let someone know you want to get to know them better and hang out. If you hear about a party, have them along. There is no trick to getting to know people better, sometimes it just takes the confidence to put yourself out there.

Remember that these kids you go to school with are just like you.Remember that these kids you go to school with are just like you. They are excited for the next four years of their life, and they are also a little intimidated. They have lives that they left back at home, and they are ready for a new start in a new place. There is a lot of common ground to work from, and your best friends at college will be your best friends because they like hanging out with you. In high school peoplepeople feel compelled to be other people's friends because they are part of the same group or they spend lots of time in close proximity. College can be way more rewarding because once you make those friends, they stay close long after you've gradu-ated and moved to different places.
