Something happens when you decide to study atthe Bader International Study Centre. You may notrealize it then, but even before you cross the moatsurrounding Herstmonceux Castle for the first time, you are on the road to becoming a global citizen.

The centre is located in a 15th century castle, but our focus is the 21st, a century of networks andprocesses. Where people, money – and ideas –criss-cross the planet at dazzling speeds. This worlddemands a new kind of citizen – comfortable withdiversity and the clash of ideas, a theorist and adoer. Our future well-being, perhaps even our verysurvival, depends on people who can think – andfeel – globally.

The Bader International Study Centre will help youbecome a true global citizen. We’ll shake up yourassumptions and get you thinking outside the box. We’ll expose you to new ideas and cultures, and tovery different ways of doing things. And the con-nections you make, with people from across Canadaand all over the world, will be the foundation ofyour own global network.

Let the Bader International Study Centre be thelaunch pad for a global you.

Bruce Stanley, Executive Director

The Castle is a legacy made possible by the generosity of one of Queen’s University’smost distinguished alumni, Dr. Alfred Bader, and his wife Isabel.

After receiving degrees in engineering chemistry and history at Queen’s, Dr. Bader wenton to graduate studies at Harvard, formed his own international chemical company, and became a world-renowned philanthropist and art collector. Among his many giftsto Queen’s was Herstmonceux Castle.

As a Jewish teenager escaping the Nazis, Dr. Alfred Bader fled to England in 1938, fromwhere he was sent to an internment camp near Montréal, Québec. There, the youngAustrian native continued his studies and, once released, applied to several well-knownCanadian universities. Queen’s was the only one to offer him admission. “I was determinedto do my best,” he later wrote. “Two years in the camp, education without distraction, followed by four years at Queen’s, was a great beginning for a successful life.”
