Karen C. Davis-Solomon, known bybloggers in Bakersfield by her username“sonflowerandgrace,” is a frequentcontributor to The Bakersfield Voice. Youmay recognize her voice as the one which
always seems to have something positive andinspirational to say.
Here’s what this wife, mom, daughter and localblogger has to say about herself:
“Having moved from here from Lakewood sixyears ago, I am honored to be a frequentcontributor to The Bakersfield Voice. I amblessedly married to my husband whom I met thesummer we were15. Our beautiful daughters are asophomore at UCSC and a senior at North HighSchool. My mother moved in with us two years agodue to health reasons and we reside in a clapboardhome encircled by a white picket fence, surrounded by roses and morning glory.
My favorite spot is rocking on the big front porchmy husband built for me for our past anniversary. Our mini-farm consists of two rabbits, sevenchickens and a cat named Chloe. We had a pignamed Abraham and two ducks, but they outgrewthe barnyard.
A plethora of ongoing projects ensues but Iespecially enjoy repurposing projects such asmosaic stained glass from old windows and makinghummingbird feeders from old bottles and glassbeads. A friend once said, “I refuse to visit you inthe dark, because you've always got somethingbeing moved or going on.”
I’ve been blessed to see a little bit of this greatbig world while stationed in Darmstadt, Germanybut was honorably discharged from Army formedical reasons. I am a tourist at heart — and
especially fancy day tripsthroughout our town andbeautiful valley. I often takemy Mom out to Hart Park tovisit the peacocks and Ienjoy just hopping in the carand seeing where I end up.
My love for reading andwriting began at the age offour when my Pop taughtme to read the televisionlistings.
“The world's knowledge islocked up in books andwhen you learn to read, younow hold the key to unlock
that knowledge,” he told me. My first publishedstory was featured in a District Publication. I wasone of three third graders chosen from ourelementary school. Later, I worked my way fromfreshman reporter to Feature Page editor as asophomore and was editor-in-chief my junior andsenior years for my high school newspaper, TheVOICE.
I was teaching Sunday School and writing yearlyChristmas stories and weekly devotions when mypastor of 30-plus years told me, “You have a talent… do something with it.” I began compiling it all
into a planned book called, “Things my Daddy ToldMe” — heavenly wisdom from our Father throughlife lessons and my earthly dad.” Shortlythereafter, I discovered blogging and began amonthly webpage under the user namesonflowerandgrace. I chose this screen namebecause sunflowers turn towards the sunthroughout the day and under God's grace, I striveto seek and follow the Son daily in all I do. When webegan receiving The Bakersfield Voice everyMonday, my family encouraged me to beginsubmitting my stories.
As a wife, mother, daughter and friend, I live bythe adages: “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours” (my Grandmother Loper);“Be the change you wish to see in the world”(Ghandi); and, “I am not afraid of storms for I amlearning to sail my ship.” (Louisa May Alcott).
I believe God always has a plan and I believe inthe power of prayer. At the end of the day, I hope allwho I know and come in contact with can honestlysay: “She loves me and she loves the Lord.”“
