Pat helps take care of her six grandchildren. Groceries for the three boys and three girls add up quickly and take a huge chunk out of the family budget. That’s why they turn to The Banquet when they run out of food. They appreciate the meals at Banquet West and are treated with dignity and respect when they fall on hard times. “The people are awesome and very friendly. It’s family-like, it’s comfortable. There are a lot of people talking at dinner and the kids like it there. The girls love the salad,” said Pat.

Meals are served every Tuesday and Wednesday night at Banquet West on the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in the Nordstrom-Johnson building. Summertime brings more children to the table because they aren’t eating lunch at school during the summer months.

The Banquet West meals are prepared at our main location at 8th Street & Indiana Avenue, trucked across town and set up catering style to serve the guests. “It’s a labor intensive process but we know there are hungry families west of Interstate-29 in the northwest part of Sioux Falls who need our help. It is our mission to fulfill the needs of the hungry in our community and we know we’re doing that when we see children cleaning their plates,” said Tamera Jerke-Liesinger, Banquet Executive Director.

So far this summer 30% of the meals served at Banquet West have been to children 12 and under.

Banquet Ballers Kick for a Cause On June 3rd The Banquet Ballers participated in the first ever Kicks for a Cause kickball tournament fundraiser. The Banquet Ballers kicked their way to 3rd place and plan to participate next year to win that 1st place trophy! Thank you to the players who gave each game their all and the Kicks team for putting together an awesome event that benefitted 8 local organizations. We took home $680 which will help us continue our ministry to our guests.

Supports Project: SOS Make a splash and make a difference this summer at Wild Water West by supporting The Banquet’s Project: SOS! On “Terrific Tuesdays” from 4:00 to 8:00pm anyone who brings in an acceptable school supply gets admission to the park for just $5.00. Season pass holders can take advantage of “Free Friend Friday” – Bring in school supplies on Fridays from 4:00 – 8:00 and your friends get in for free. See www.wildwaterwest.com for a list of acceptable supplies.

Volunteer Dress CodeReminder

South Dakotans welcome the warm summer months and love shedding those shoes and heavy pants for shorts and flip flops but please remember while serving The Banquet we need all volunteers to wear closed toe shoes for safety purposes. Please wear t-shirts, walking shorts and tennis shoes. Do not wear short-shorts, tank tops and flip-flops. Thank you!

Groups Share Creative Fundraising Ideas to Serve The Banquet MealsVolunteer groups are coming up with more creative ways to cover the cost of serving a meal at The Banquet. A meal can be as little as $350 or as much as $1,000 depending on the meal and the menu.

Some people see those numbers and think, “I could never serve a meal at The Banquet because I don’t have that much money.” We will never turn away volunteer groups that cannot cover the full cost of the meal. Our mission is to connect volunteers with guests for food and fellowship.

For businesses or church groups, funding a meal may be as easy as adding a line in the budget or taking up a special collection, but for smaller groups, it isn’t always that simple, and that’s where some creativity can go a long way.

Roosevelt Rough Riders High School Dance team hosted a private dance show for friends and family to raise money to serve.

Other groups have hosted a car wash, bake sale or a lemonade stand. We’re also seeing more GoFundMe pages to raise funds to cover the cost of a meal. Businesses have established “jeans day” where employees pay a small fee to wear jeans and another company held a “penny war.” Not only is this a great way to have some office fun but it’s going for a good cause—to help people who are hungry.

$10 & $20 Gifts Make a Huge ImpactSmaller gifts to The Banquet add up. The cost of a single meal at The Banquet is around $2.50 per person, which is less than a school lunch, a specialty cup of coffeeorasnackataconveniencestore.

When pooled together, those small donations can cover the cost of most, if not all, of the meal you serve. Meals are primarily funded by the groups that serve them and every donation counts so get a team together, get creative and come serve with us! You will be glad you did!

We would love to hear your creative fundraising ideas to encourage other groups. Email Dakotah at [email protected] to pass on the fun!

Families Grateful for Gifts of School Supplies for ChildrenThe Banquet has been distributing school supplies through its Project: SOS program for nearly 30 years. Families from all over Sioux Falls and the surrounding school districts get help through this event which gives more than 6,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students each year. When family budgets are stretched to just cover monthly expenses, there isn’t anything extra for a back pack and supplies, which can often cost families about$50ormoreperchild.Transportationcanalsobeachallengeforstruggling parents as shopping for school supplies often means needing to go to multiple stores.

Lisa, a single mother with three children, brings her children to eat at The Banquet. She is grateful for the school supplies her children receive. “We wouldn’t have been able to get all the supplies they needed without that help,” she says. “It’s embarrassing when kids need to ask for supplies in front of their friends at school. There’s nothing embarrassing about Project: SOS and parents who need help should just come.”

When her 6th grade daughter, Amora, hears her mom talking about Project: SOS she smiles big and her eyes light up.

“I love getting to pick out my favorite backpack and see everything that’s in it,” she says. “It’s all the supplies you need for your grade!”

Hersiblingsagree,andher5thgradesisterCelesteadds,“It’salotoffun!When can we go again?”

Teachers and administrators tell us when children show up for school on the first day with new supplies and are ready for the school year they have better grades and are excited about learning.

Please consider setting up a school supply collection box at your work or church. The Banquet will provide you with posters, supply lists and boxes for your collection. If you aren’t a shopper, a monetary contribution will go toward backpacks and supplies for local children.

Project: SOS Distribution Day is Saturday, August 19th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Whittier Middle School, at 930 E. 6th St. in Sioux Falls. It reaches into the Sioux Falls community and beyond to ensure all children have the same chance at success at school, no matter what might be happening at home.

Go to www.thebanquetsf.org click on “Project: SOS” page for information. Email Erika, after August 1st, at [email protected] to volunteer.

Share Your Harvest with the Hungry For many people, summer is a time to enjoy more fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables from the garden, but noteveryone has that luxury. Many of our guests aren’t able togrowagardennorcantheyaffordtopurchasefruitsand vegetables in the grocery stores. When gardeners bring their abundance of produce to The Banquet they are providing a healthy treat to the guests that eat with us. Don’t let those extra tomatoes go to waste - bring them to 900 E 8th Street and impact the health of those living in poverty in our community.

Fresh produce and other donations can be brought in Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. We cannot accept home-processed items such as jams, jellies and pickles or apples of any kind. The Banquet will accept fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, grapes and pears, but no apples please.
