February has practically flown by; I can barely believe that we’re already closing in on Spring

(at least according to the calendar).

Here are a few highlights on what’s happening:

Clubhouse. After the proposal and interview process, we selected Baylis Architects to pre-

pare a conceptual design proposal. Baylis has a very strong resume of work on tennis and

sports projects and work for non-profit organizations, and also has experience in working

with the City of Kirkland. Again, I’d like to emphasize that all we’re doing at this point is

preparing conceptual drawings and layout materials to present to the Board and the mem-

bership in order to get feedback and approval before we undertake any new Clubhouse

design or construction. The plan is to present the conceptual design to the membership at

the annual meeting and again at several follow on meetings over the summer. Late sum-

mer or early fall, once everyone has had a chance to learn about the proposed design, we

will have an advisory vote of the membership before we take any further action.

Equity Membership structure. Here is a rough outline of the proposed amendment to the

bylaws that the Board will consider in a few months. If the Board approves the proposed

amendment, it will then be submitted to the membership for a vote at this year’s Annual

Meeting. In general, the amendment will propose a new structure for equity member-

ships. Here are the details:

Current members will be grandfathered into the existing membership structure,

but will also have the option to choose to convert to the new structure. All new

memberships will be the new structure.

Under the new structure, instead of two classes of Equity memberships (Family

and Single) there will be one class of Equity membership. This new membership

will only apply to one adult for a base amount in monthly dues. Any additional

people added to the membership (adult or children) will cost an additional

amount in monthly dues.

Additional people on a membership will be priced on a sliding scale.

Everyone on a membership will have court reservation privileges.

Voting privileges will remain the same: one vote per membership.

The membership eligibility guidelines will remain the same,

which are (generally): married couple or registered partners

and any dependent children.

The dues structure for the new membership structure will, to

the maximum extent possible, be revenue neutral as com-

pared to the current dues structure.

As always, people are welcome to contact me via e-mail

([email protected]) with any Club related issues.

See you at the Club,

Matt President

Here it is March! While many of our members travel to the BNP Paribas March 6-19 in Indian Wells, we will tackle many club projects while we have the oppor-tunity. First will be the LED Lighting project. We will be rotating each building week to week, so please make sure you and your guests are checking in for court allocation, and are aware of your surroundings. To make this as seamless and efficient as possible, we will be storing some equipment on the courts. Thank you for your patience while we update the lighting and add sensors to the Reed and Wright building.

Another project we will be taking on is the drainage issue off of court 1. Bodine Construction will be here the week of March 13 to improve the drain and help the tremendous water load to move away from the building more efficiently. This work will be happening out-side, but may impede some access to the Reed building. We will post signs to alert you.

We appreciate your patience as we take on these projects and hope the timing is just right with our member travels.

In the midst of all this, we also have Daylight Savings happening March 12 - time to spring forward and enjoy a little more daylight. April 1 we will have our summer program out for the juniors. I have a feeling summer will be sneaking up on all of us, so we will try to send out reminders.

For those that were not aware, ACES Tennis was purchased by Bellevue Tennis. Zach Glaser is the manag-er of Bellevue Tennis Shop, which has expanded their offerings. We will continue the stringing arrangement as previously set. Remember, Club members receive a 10% discount on regularly priced clothing at their lo-cation. Their new phone number is (425) 829-6679.

Congratulations to all those that participated and to those that were winners in the Bellevue Club/Central Park tournament this last month. Thanks to Lisa, Brian, tennis staff, kitchen staff and all the members who stepped up and helped with the tournament desk.

A few housekeeping items:

BALL MACHINES and CLEANING UP I have received a few comments from members that are going on to the court after the ball machine has been used. Please remember to start your clean up prior to court change over. Give yourself time to pick up all the balls, including those that have snuck under the curtain, and use the sweeper to clean up as much of the fuzz as you can. Since the staff is not using the ball machine, please let us know when the balls are past their use date (we recycle them to baseball teams, guide dogs, nursing homes, etc.) or if there is an issue with the sweepers, extension cord or hoppers. Your feedback is helpful.

MEMBER PLAY LIMITATIONS: Each member may play on only one reserved court per day. The following will count as play on a reserved court for the day: 1) a substitute playing on a reserved court; 2) a no-show on a reserved court; 3) play on an allocated court*. (Such participation, however, does not pre-clude the member from holding a reservation for another day.) *(Allocated Court: These court sessions are set aside by the Club for sanctioned group activities: adult and junior tennis programs (except social pro-grams), tournaments, Cups and USTA matches, and other tennis activities approved by the Club.) The following will not count as play on a reserved court for the day: 1) play at the 8:30 PM session for a USTA match; 2) play in a club sponsored social function; 3) use of the professional staff teaching court for a lesson or clinic; or 4) a walk-on or wait list court.

GAMETIME: We are in the process of moving our weekly program sign ups to Gametime. If you have not done so, please log in and enter your information. Many members are taking advantage of viewing the courts and waitlist on-line, as well as making their own reservations and looking for open courts. If you don’t have the log in information you can download it here.

Happy Spring!

CUPS | CHAIR CHRISTINE GARNETT - SUBMITTED BY MARILYN PEDERSEN

The Cup Committee will issue Cup scores the first week of March and then we will follow up with the Cup application, guidelines and appeal email shortly thereafter.

Appeals will be due April 7th

Applications due May 1st

There will be no Cup Committee meeting in March or April.

FACILITIES | CHAIR KRISTEN GROBSTOCK

MEMBERSHIP | CHAIR KIM SKORUPA

Are you looking for a game or a group of same-level players? You can check out the list on the Online reservation system (Gametime). You can access this list by selecting the TENNIS menu item in Gametime and the list will be near the top on the right. There are currently 58 players on the list. If you would like to see your name on the list – you can follow the instructions provided. Be sure to update your profile with your level!! In addition, there will be a sign up sheet at the front desk if you are looking for a game.

March’s Mix Up Friday night is scheduled for Friday, March 10th – sign up for some fun tennis followed

by some great Irish Food!!

Mix Up is moving to Saturdays for the Summer months – this will allow those players who can’t make it on Friday night an opportunity to participate.

Make sure you swing by Laurie & Arica’s office to check out the new CPTC hats & court towels .

Finally, if you observe an etiquette issue on the court, please contact the management staff with the time and date of the incident.

Hope everyone enjoys the new doors, and especially the new automatic front doors. Ecstatic to take this off my to do list! We should have the trim work painted shortly.

This week we have replaced the tall chain link fence between the walkway and outdoor courts. We are still struggling with some water getting on the courts from the outside. These are small leaks, but with the amount of water we received in February (new record) it can't get worse! We are working on fixing these, and this spring we will be digging up the area between court 1 and 14 to put in a new drain line.

Please note that we are starting our LED lighting project February 28th. 2 courts each day Tuesday -Thursday. Monday 3/6 & 13 we will close one building. We should be done by 3/16.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

FINANCE | CHAIR MARTY MCCURRY

January’s financial results were good. Net Ordinary Income (before Depreciation, and Interest) for the month and year-to-date was $48,815; budget for the month and year-to-date was $39,031, yielding a surplus for the month and year to date surplus of $9,784. The surplus was primarily due to strong ten-nis lesson revenue and guest fee revenue.

The Club’s financial position remains sound with Total Cash of $431,628, and an excellent current ratio of over 4.0 to 1.

Central Park Tennis Club continues to be fully subscribed with 500 members, and with a wait list to join of 20. Again, due to the strong demand, the Equity Member Initiation Fee remains at $6,000.

The next finance committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 15th at 5:45pm.

TENNIS | NANCY GOLDBERG

If you see something, say something!

Broken bench? Holes in the nets? Dead balls in the ball machines? No water on courts? Can’t read the signage by the court phones? If you see something that needs attention – whether it is a repair or supply replenishment – email Julie, Vlad, or tell the front desk attendant. While maintenance does a weekly walk-thru, they aren’t on the courts playing tennis like most of us are.

Julie’s Email - [email protected]

Vlad’s Email - [email protected]

Other items – in January there were a record number of court no-shows and violations for playing on two reserved courts in the same day. Parents, note that if you book a court for your child, you must stay on that court for the entire court time. If you don’t, that’s a no-show. USTA teams, unless your match is away or you are playing an 8:30 p.m. match at Central Park, you cannot reserve a warm up court. However, you can get on the waitlist for a warm up court once all courts at that time are booked, or you can call at 6:00 p.m. the night before to try to secure one. Please ask me, Julie, or the front desk if you are unclear.

At our last meeting, we reviewed the new junior team format and allocated courts for the summer ses-sion. We’ll continue to look at the survey comments to see in what areas we can make improvements.

We will not meet in March; our next meeting will be Monday, April 3 at 6:00 p.m.

PRO’S COURT

It’s Tournament Time All Around Us

It’s been awhile since the last time I wrote something for the CPTC News-letter back in September. A lot has happened in the past 6 months since I joined CPTC: the junior program has been growing, I’ve gotten to know a lot of great members at the club, I’ve recovered from a back injury and last but not least, I am so excited to join CPTC 5.0+ Women’s Team! I thought it would be fun to share some doubles tactics as the USTA sea-son is coming up very soon. To make it simple in doubles, let’s look at the game from 2 tactical stand points, 1) Serving Team, 2) Returning Team. In the past 10 years, I have coached many adult USTA teams and I have watched how the strong teams rise to the top. Let me tell you one of their secrets: they spend equal amounts of practice time on Returning. So, in this article, let’s look at some tips on Returning Team Tactics. 1) Use “2 Back” position

Use this “2 Back” position when - a) opponent’s serve is strong, b) opponent’s net player is aggressive and c) your team’s return isn’t working

When returning both back, know that the mentality is defense so always make the return to make them play, then work your way up to the net as a team

2) Attack weak Serve - Chip & Charge

This is an excellent way to pressure the opponents. Remember use slice with the conti-nental grip and use the outside shot to return in order to remain closer to the middle of the court. (if you’re a right hander: FH on the deuce court and BH on ad court)

Move forward as the opponent tosses the serve. This will allow you to catch the ball clos-er to the service line and therefore be closer to the net for your first volley.

3) Returner’s Partner - Plan to Poach in Advance of a Good Return

The same way that planning to poach when your partner serves helps you move across with more confidence.

Planning in advance to poach off a good return will minimize the risk of the opponent sur-prising you and hitting behind you. If this happens, at least your partner knows and will be ready to cover you.

Can really pay off on key points

4) Returner’s Partner - Help your partner by Poaching after a Great Return When your partner returns, you will start at the point in a defensive position - closer to the

service line. To do this organic-type of poaching, the key is to follow the direction of your partner’s return (if they return to the alley, you move towards the alley, if they return to-wards the middle you move towards the middle). When you see that your partner’s return is actually putting your opponents in trouble, look for the poach.

Good luck with your USTA season and have fun trying these tips! Feel free to stop by and ask me if you have questions about the tactics or anything about tennis :)

March is National Nutrition Month! If you

have been thinking about making

healthier choices, losing weight, cutting

out bad fats and adding in good fats or

whatever change you may have been

thinking about, this month may be the

time.

Eating healthier can be as easy as add-

ing 1 more serving of fruits or veggies to

our day or having brown rice instead of

white or maybe add beans, legumes

and a whole grain instead of an animal

protein source.

Making our plate colorful can help us get the vitamins, nutrients and fiber that our body needs to keep us

healthy and feeling our best. Combining foods can help us get a bigger bang for our buck, fat soluble vita-

mins, ADEK, should be eaten with a fat, preferably a healthy one, to help our bodies absorb them better,

roasted sweet potatoes tossed with coconut oil for instance. Eating foods rich in vitamin C with a (nonheme)

iron source, kale salad massaged with lemon juice will help tenderize the kale as well as make the iron more

bio available to our bodies. Check out the article for more tips and info www.precisionnutrition.com/10-ways-

to-get-the-most-nutrients.

Being aware of what we eat and why is also beneficial as we try to make better choices. If we eat out of

boredom, stress, anger….we don’t always make the best food choices. Whoever felt better when they ate a

spinach salad, right?! When we have those moments it would be handy to have a healthier activity to turn to,

one that will make us feel better. Maybe that looks like taking a brisk walk, turning on our favorite music real

loud and jumping around, journaling our thoughts and emotions, whatever works for us.

Eating a pbj or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat after tennis, would be a better choice than a commercial

energy bar; bringing sliced apple and cheese with whole grain crackers or oats, yogurt and fruit are some

other ideas.

What does a healthier plate look like to you?

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”

As a Certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist, Health and Wellness Coach, combined with my fitness back-

ground, I am here to help you find the ingredients to your balanced, healthy, fit life. Everyone is different, the

solution to your weight loss and health and nutrition goals is no exception. There is no one size fits all, you

are unique, the only way to make a lasting change is to find what works for you.

Let's take your dream, your vision, your desire to change and make it your reality! It may not be easy,

change never is, but you can do it; I will be there keeping you accountable, supporting you, encouraging and

championing you every step of the way, even dishing out some tough love as needed. ; ) Vicki Runnels
