India kicked off its campaign of BFAME Bridge
Championships against Bangladesh and the match
which at the half way stage looked like a see saw
battle, in the end turned out to be a comprehensive
win for India beating Bangladesh by 29 imps (22-8 VPs).

partner made a negative double of 2D. West is helpless as he can’t find an entry into East’s hand .
West led his 4th best diamond, Kiran won with the
King and ran her spades. West made the mistake of pitching a heart from QJx, in the process declarer
also pitched a heart making 11 tricks.

Play: North led a diamond and Tewari played a
spade to ace and ruffed a spade, he then started to
draw trumps by cashing heart ace and a heart to king , hoping to draw them in 2 rounds and then
ruff a spade, but as trumps were 3-1, now he entered hand with the diamond ace and drew the
outstanding trump .now he ran all his trumps and there was simple club – spade squeeze on south for
an over trick and 1 imp to India.

Prabhakar’s 3S was asking partner to bid 3NT. It can come with other variations as well, but this
time it was just to play there.
North led his 4th best spade and Tewari won it with ace and played a diamond to the jack which lost to
the queen. At this moment it required a club shift to
beat the hand but it was not to be as North backed
another spade and declarer romped home with 9 tricks .

Satya also led his 4th best spade, and declarer like in the open room won with the spade Ace in the
dummy and cashed the diamond ace and finessed the diamond losing to Satya’s queen. After a long
consideration Satya shifted to the club 5, and Kiran
after winning with the ace of clubs had a dilemna
to back partner’s original suit or the suit shifted. She misguessed and backed a spade for a push.
At this stage the match was very evenly poised with India leading by just 2 imps, with the score card
reading 12 imps to Bangladesh’s 10.
On board 9 Prabhakar – Tewari defended 4H for
down 1, while the game (4S) was bid and made in
the closed room for a 11 imp pick up for Bangladesh.
A series of pick up for India in the next few boards and India were on their way building a healthy lead.

nose that he has, guessed well and bid 4H.
Play: Diamond ace was led and ruffed by declarer,
down with the spade king and another diamond ruffed. Prabhakar now played a trump, South
playing his singleton jack, covered with the king to North’s Ace. North cashed the trump and exited
with a spade. The defence had no way of beating this and 10 tricks for EW and India.

At this stage declarer ran both the trumps leaving

East after pitching club queen, was left with club king and H10. The roof fell when declarer played for
a squeeze on East and tried to fetch the king on
the heart ace, but it was not to be, but nevertheless india gained 8 imps when Prabhakar-Tewari were
allowed to play in 4H.
Final Score: 50-22 IMPs in favour of India, which got converted to 22-8 VPs.

The India-Pakistan RR1-Round-2 match saw
Marriane Karmarkar – Hema Deora sitting NS for
India facing Zeenat Azwer – Rubina Agha sitting as EW for Pakistan in the Open Room.
In the Closed room Fatima Raza - Rubina Saeed Hai of Pakistan sitting NS faced Tutu Narule –
Asha Surana sitting EW for India.
The two neighbours got off to a slow start with the hosts up by 3-0 IMPs at the end of 4 deals. This was courtesy 3 Over tricks - 1 on Bd-1 & 2
on Bd-4 scored by India in the Closed Room. In
between, on Bd-2 both sides suffered a one-trick set in 6S going 1 down when the ♥A was off and
Bd-3 was a quiet push in 4H making 11 by NS in both rooms.
Then came the only double-digit swing of the
match. The Indian North, on Bd-5, didn’t Double holding ♠KJ6, ♥98,♦T8, ♣KQJT75 after seeing
the auction proceed: P(by her)-P-1♦-1♠; 2♣ (by
her)-2♠-3♦-4♠. 4♠ which went off 3 tricks was a
poor compensation against 3N, which was duly bid & made by the Pakistan Women in the CR who now led India 10-3.
Bd-6 was a push with both sides making an
overtrick in 3♦ by NS.
On Bd-7, while the Indian NS in the OR suffered a 1-trick set in 3N, the Pakistan Women in the CR were in 4N, which also met the same fate. Push board.
Bd-8 saw India pulling back 2 IMPs when the 3H
contract went -1 in the OR but the same contract suffered a 2-trick set in the CR on the same D-4 lead.
Then came Board-9.

Both Norths opened 3S pre-empt (a bit heavy) which went Pass-Pass. Both Wests re-opened with a Dbl and after a Pass by North & 4H by
Eest, South bid 4S.
Now, the auctions divulged. While, in the Open
Room, West, Rubina Agha was content with a DOUBLE, which ended the proceedings there, Asha Surana, West for India in the CR bid 5H.
But then the original pre-emptor Fatima Raza bid 5♠, followed by Pass-Pass-Dbl by West.
Tutu Narula, East for India, not to be undone, added her own 6H to the proceedings. which closed the auction. Pakistan Women went +100 in the OR duly negotiating a diamond ruff.
In the CR, with nothing to guide her, Rubina
Saeed Hai could not find the killing club lead and led the ♠2, reasonably enough. Now, the
contract is a make. But, Tutu, went wrong and suffered a 1-trick set. If you bid like Rixi
Markus, you better play like her too. Instead of 17 IMPs to India, it was 5 IMPs to Pakistan, who now led 15-5.
On bd-10, Marianne, fourth to speak, on picking
up ♠T6, ♥AQJ9864,♦J7,♣A5 clearly the best
hand amongst the four, bid a practical 4♥ after
1♦ by Zeenat, 1♠ overcall by Hema and a 2♦
raise by Rubina.
Partner had ♠AJ543,♥T7,♦32,♣K984. Alas, there
was no fortune favouring the brave here as there
was no escaping the inevitable 4 losers for a 1-
trick set. In the CR, Pakistan, rested in 2♥
making 9 tricks, and now led 21-5.
On Bd-11, Marianne, playing 15-17 NT rather
inexplicably opened a strong 1♣ with a balanced
17 pointer and ended in 3N suffering a 3-trick
set & much agony during the play. In the CR, 1N
made an OT and a further 7 IMPs to Pakistan
who now led 28-5.
After a deluge of IMPs on the previous 3 deals,
Bd-12 was a quiet push with 2♦ by NS, suffering
a 1-trick set.
Then came along a partial recovery for India. On
Bd-13, Pakistan bought the contracts in both the
rooms, 4♦ in the OR & 4♥ in the CR. While the
former went 1-off, the latter went 2-off & 7
needed IMPs to India.
On Bd-14, India in the OR rested in 3♠ making
10 tricks on a favourable lay of the cards; the
Pakistan CR were in 3N going 1-off. 5 more imps
to India, who now trailed 18-28.
After a quiet push on the next deal, Pakistan
shut out any further Indian pull-back with India
going -100 in both the rooms. That was 5 more
imps to Pakistan and a well deserved 33-18
score, which translated to a 18-12 VP victory.
