nion General John Buford and his

cavalry set up defense on the ridges

west of the town

onfederate General Heth would attack

him at this position

Major General John Reynolds could get

there with his reinforcements

uford’s cavalry men were trained to fight dismounted as

infantry

ajor General John Reynolds was able to reinforce Buford

but it wasn’t enough.

General Longstreet to attack the southern

side of the Union line

t the same time he told General Ewell to

attack the Union line at Culp’s Hill

ongstreet's men will meet heavy

resistance from the 20th Maine at Little

Round Top

he rebels were met with resistance from

the 20th Maine under the command of

Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain

T

he rebels charged the hill three times but

were unsuccessful every time

C

hamberlain would then call a bayonet

charge that would sweep the rebels down

the hillside.

fter the failure of the attacks on

the second day, Lee ordered one

large attack that would happen

at the center of the Union line.

his would come to be known as

Pickett’s Charge

he attack began with Confederate artillery

raining down on the Union center

fter two hours of bombardment Longstreet

gave the command to attack

P

ickett ‘s entire division would be nearly

decimated and all three of his brigade

commanders would be killed.
