Are you ready for some Bluegrass??
The weather is cooling down but the music isn't. Salt Grass, one of our all-time favorite bands, will be back again this month with another favorite Pet Rooster and a new band to the BABA stage. Making Tyme is a group of talented individuals who have been around the BABA scene have now joined forces to form a new group. There is no doubt
that they will become a BABA favorite. Judging from their recent performances around town they will be a hot group that you don't want to miss!
Next month, get ready for the “Triple Feature Gospel” end-of-year show. It's the last event of 2013 and we've put together a show to send the year out with a bang. Expect three great bands including another group new to the BABA stage: Robertson County Line is a great friend to BABA that finely had a slot open so they are able to play for us. You really don't want to miss them. Bluegrass Solution and White Dove have been BABA favorites for years. If you were only able to come to one show all year, this will be the one you would choose.
Looking to the future, your board of directors is working hard planning events. Work includes:
Vince Gill has a bluegrass album: High Lonesome Sound. So does Patty Loveless: Mountain Soul. Brad Paisley,
couldn’t pass up recording Darrell Scott’s excellent “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” Now Alan Jackson has released “The Bluegrass Album.” Even Zac Brown has announced that he’s going to throw up if he hears one more song about tail gates and ‘Daisy Dukes’. Lyle Lovett frequently ends his shows with an homage to his bluegrass roots. Well, country stars, here it is: BABA invites you to come on down to the League City, Texas, Civic Center, the third Saturday of most months. Come and jam, listen and/or play on the stage. No cover charge, and we don’t plug in anything but the speakers! Sounds like you’ve been missing something. We’ve been tending it for you, waiting or you to come home. for more details.

About BABA
BABA Bulletin October 2013
The Bay Area Bluegrass Association (BABA) was organized in 1986 and incorporated in 1987 under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act. The primary purpose of BABA is to preserve, encourage, and promote Bluegrass and Bluegrass gospel music as an American art form. BABA promotes Bluegrass through being active in community events, fund raisers, festivals, and monthly shows. BABA is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible organization; see any Director for information.
The monthly show is free to the public and features Bluegrass from the local and national scene. The stage show begins at 7:00 PM, but pickers are welcome to bring their instruments and come earlier to jam. Tasty, inexpensive food is available at the show, and there are raffles, door prizes, and Bluegrass merchandise for sale. This is a ‘no alcohol’ event, but there’s plenty of music and great family fun!
Proceeds from donations, sponsors, memberships, sales, and raffles are used to keep the doors open and the regular shows free to the public. They also maintain and replace sound equipment, storage, security, and incidental expenses of keeping the music playing. We thank you for your attendance, your generosity, and your love of the music. 2

There are some of us semi-mis-placed BABA folks who live as much as an hour or more from our monthly shows. Ron & I are up in Spring, near Mercer Arboretum (a lovely place for walking and picnics). Fellow board member Chris Bagley lives in Bellaire. The Simses live in Sugarland. Loooonnnnnnnng time BABA members Tony & Nema Redding live in Cypress. And there are many other pickers from the hinterlands as well. While Ron & I make it to virtually every show, the distance is a bit far for us to try to make other jams or activities in the Galveston Bay area.
Speaking of Tony & Nema, as I was, let me tell you about a couple of jamming events that they host. Each fourth Saturday of most months, Tony & Nema organize a fun-filled jam at the Kleb Woods Nature Center from noon to 4:00. This is a very friendly jam, and even beginners and not-so-advanced bluegrassers are welcome to come play. They do follow the usual rules of bluegrass jamming, so you get to choose a tune and the tempo when it's your turn as they go around the circle. Everyone is encouraged to join in, but you can also sit and listen if you want. If the group gets a bit large, we sometimes split up into other rooms. In nice weather, the jamming is out on the porch; otherwise, we're inside in the air conditioning. The Kleb Woods Nature Center is at 20303 Draper Road, Tomball TX 77377. Warning: there is a Kleb Woods Nature (off 2920). THAT IS !!!
But wait! There's more! Each Monday evening, the Reddings host another jam at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church (13131 Fry Road) in Cypress. The jam starts at 7:00, and jammers are welcome to join others for dinner at Spring Creek BBQ in Cypress at 5:30 before the jam.

Fire on the Strings with a full range of workshops in August, more workshops throughout the year at the regular monthly shows, and the Texas State Banjo, Guitar and mandolin Championships. These are just a few of the things we are working on, and we have some special shows and events lined up I know you'll enjoy.
Now I need to ask for your help. Remember that BABA is funded solely by your membership and donations. Just like everyone else times are getting tuff. We are working hard to keep BABA a top-shelf association and we are trying to keep the monthly shows free, but we have to pay the bills or we won't be able to have a show at all.
It takes help from all the members to do that. Ask at work if your company has a non-profit donation program. Bring your friends and ask them to join. Donate what you can and help
thif you can. Thanks for helping bring us into our 27 year, and thanks in advance for helping us continue for many more!

DEERING BANJO FOR SALEI have a Deering Goodtime 2 banjo that I would like to sell to a good home. It has only been played once, and that was by one of the retiring astronauts from JSC. It sounded amazing. The specifics are that it is a Goodtime 2, and it includes an eagle embroidered case, strings, picks, tuner, and two straps. It retails for $699 and an un-embroidered case sells for $99. The asking price is $650 for the entire ensemble. Everything is in pristine condition! Alison Krauss has been diagnosed with ‘dysphonia’ which simply means ‘a voice impairment orspeech disorder.’ Treatment includes voice rest, so her performances in the immediate future havebeen cancelled. This is not uncommon among professional singers, and voice rest is no strangerto others including Shania Twain who has successfully recovered from dysphonia. Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert have needed voice rest as well. Her representatives say that they “anticipate a smooth, quick recovery given proper treatment and adequate rest.”
Alan Jackson was quoted recently as saying that he misses the “real roots-y, traditional stuff ”that is missing in today’s ‘Country Music’ sound. That might be bad news for Nashville, but it’sgood news for Bluegrass Fans. On September 24th, Alan released “The Bluegrass Album” and itincludes several of his own original songs that ring true to the genre. In an review published in the 10/1/13 issue of Country Weekly, Bob Paxman assures us “This isn't some country star's halfhearted vanity attempt at bluegrass—Alan's album is the real thing, a ‘must’ whether you're a bluegrass buff or just a fan of fine music.”
Zac Brown has also commented negatively on the commercialism in the Nashville radio sound. Say, maybe the band will offer up some of his acoustic guitar licks and loan that blazing fiddler to usBluegrass music fans for awhile too. Give a listen to “Martin” by Zac Brown Band on You Tube......or ask Pauline Eklund play it for you in the jam session at BABA.
