The old adage — that times flies when you having

fun — definitely holds true for edition two of this

magazine. It feels like just the other day that we

launched the first edition and already I’m sitting at

my desk reviewing the second edition of The Bay.

How awesome!

If you thought that there aren’t any good-news

stories out there and that all that can be written

about is bad news, I’m very happy to be able to tell

you that this edition of The Bay bears testimony to

the good-news stories and good people living in

our community. Take Kit and Martine Meyer, who

share their story about how they arrived in Richards

Bay 30 years ago and have been the owners of

Kit’s Photo Store for 20 years. This amazing

couple have really worked hard and made a go of

owning their own business, even though the world

of photography has gone digital and the world of

cameras has changed as phones and cameras have

blended. They are locals with great tenacity and

passion and they’re a story worth celebrating.

Kate Bain’s article is another inspirational story of

grit, tenacity and determination and her use of the

three F’s to help her survive. What Izulu Orphan

Projects accomplishes every day will make many

of us wonder if we really make the best use of our

time and resources every day — turn to page 22 if

you want to be inspired.

The magazine is packed with loads of good-news

stories that highlight an amazing community with

so much potential and, speaking of potential, we

have loved showcasing three of our local kids going

for gold. Karisa, Joshua and Murray have all put

in hours of work to accomplish exceptional results

and make the people of Zululand proud. Their

positive attitude will definitely impact the altitude

of their future successes and we’re excited to be

profiling more young achievers in our community.

It is a great second edition. We love the idea that

you’ll keep a copy next to your bed or on the coffee

table. We hope that you pick it up often and take a

read every now and then. The Bay is the only glossy

magazine for Zululand with some great stories

about local people doing extraordinary things and

you can keep it for ages.

Till the next edition,

God Bless

Justin Scott

GADGETS

GADGETSGIZMO’S

With new smartphones being launched practically every single day, it’s difficult to make your product stand out above the rest. But, amongst all the ‘noise’, you still sometimes find a truly stellar performer. And that’s what the new offering from LG gives us.

Most of us would equate the Korean electronics manufacturer with the TVs and DVD players in our lounges but, slowly but surely, they are taking over the coveted smartphone arena with their top-notch devices.

The new LG G3 Smartphone tops the list in many departments, but it is the astounding screen, fantastic battery life and stellar performance that makes it stick out.

The screen is an amazing crystal-clear Quad HD 2560 x 1440 pixel screen (better than any laptop screen) which allows you to view full HD videos and images without any issues!

The 3000 mAh battery will keep your device going for almost two days and the 13MP camera also means that you can take the most amazing photos.

All in all, the LG G3 comes out tops in most departments, the only con being the size of the phone, which might be a bit too big at 146mm x 74mm. But we’ll look past that for the sheer simplicity and quality of this phone. In our books it’s a definite winner if you’re in the new/upgrade market for a phone.

The LG G3 smartphone will be available in South Africa from the beginning of September.

Smaak™ 9H Tempered GlaSS Screen proTecTorS for THe SamSunG Galaxy S5 and ipHone 5/5S www.ismaak.com

Despite the millions of different types and brands out there, it’s not often that you get to read a review on a screen protector.

BUT…

I recently managed to get my hands on an exciting, locally-developed screen protector created by the guys at Smaak™. It blew every single other screen protector out there out of the water.

The Smaak™ Tempered Glass Screen Protector is made from 0.3mm 9H tempered glass. It’s up to three times as strong as regular screen protectors and provides maximum protection for your mobile device’s screen.

It has an oleophobic coating to protect against oil and water and it has anti-fingerprint properties. The tempered glass is shock-resistant and has rounded edges that fit perfectly on your mobile device’s screen.

And, priced at R250, it is a worthwhile investment to stop those nasty spider-web cracks that appear on your phone when it decides to ‘accidently’ meet the ground.

They are available for purchase online at http://www.geekshop.co.za. Use the promo code Gadgets&Gizmos when checking out for FREE DELIVERY on this awesome, must-have screen protector.

My TOWN

CLINTON MATTHEWSClinton has been in Richards Bay for 9 years. He has 2 children and loves taking them to the yacht club to spend quality time with them and his lovely wife, Rialet. Clinton started out as a huge success in the motor industry business at the young age of 27 in JHB as the Dealer Principle of the company. At the age of 29 he was running 3 dealerships in JHB. After a while he decided he wanted more and moved to Richards Bay where he is currently the Dealer Principle of GWM. He has a big future planned for GWM with the goal in mind that it will eventually become a Motor City on its own. Clinton likes to surround himself with winners, go-getters and vibrant people with lots of energy as he believes this makes for a successful and comfortable working environment.

To turn a simple visit from a friend into a formal affair, all that it really takes is the addition of a delicate teacup and saucer — throw in some flowers and a scone and you’ve got a teatime fit for a queen — even a British queen! It is, after all, thanks to the Brits that ‘teatime’ as we know it brings back memories of a bygone era where ‘teatime’ meant tables decked out in the finest linen and silverware and laden with cucumber sandwiches, crumpets, shortbread, etc — and don’t forget a perfect china tea set! But where did the tradition of teatime and all that goes with it actually have its roots? We delve into some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about teatime.

The essence of teatimeFancy a cuppa?

Whilst a lot of people think of England as the place in which

teatime was first instituted, it wasn’t until the late 1670s that England started

importing tea, along with many other South-East Asian and Indian goods.

Some believe that the tradition of afternoon tea may actually

have been started by the French.

The tea partyAlthough Catherine of

Braganza is credited with making tea-drinking fashionable, the taking of tea in the afternoon only developed into a new

social custom in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It is said that the tradition of afternoon tea was established by Anne, Duchess of Bedford. She requested that light sandwiches be brought to

her in the late afternoon because she had a ‘sinking feeling’ at that time because of the

long gap between meals. She began to invite others to join her and thus

the tradition was born.

The extended pinkie

Ever wondered how the time-honoured custom of extending your pinkie whilst drinking a cuppa came

about? The first china tea cups were made without handles so, in order not to spill

hot tea on yourself, the proper way to hold the cup was to place your thumb at the 6 o’clock position and your index and

middle fingers at the 12 o’clock position, whilst gently raising

your pinkie for balance.

Not-so-high-tea

Ever been to a high-tea in the afternoon for a few finger snacks and, of course, tea?

Well, technically, this is not a high-tea at all, but actually a low-tea. Shock! Horror! The Jones’s have

been lying to us! High-tea, in fact, pertains to dinner, or the main, hearty meal of the day, whereas low-tea

is generally taken at around 4 to 5 p.m in a sitting room with low tables. Other kinds of teatimes — that I had never before heard of — include cream-tea with tea, scones, jam and cream, light-tea with tea, scones and sweets and

full-tea with tea, savouries, scones, sweets and dessert.

The etiquette of teatimeNever wave or hold your teacup in the air. When not in use, place the

teacup back in its saucer.

If you are at a buffet tea, hold the saucer in your lap with your left

hand and hold the teacup in your right hand. When not in use, place the teacup back in its saucer and

hold them in your lap. The only time that a saucer is raised together

with the teacup is when one is at a standing reception.

Do not stir your tea with your teaspoon in sweeping circular

motions. Place your teaspoon at the six o’clock position and softly fold

the liquid towards the twelve o’clock position two or three times.

Either place the used teaspoon on the side of another plate or ask the

server or hostess to remove the spoon from the table. Never leave

the spoon in the cup, especially whilst actually drinking your tea.Do not use your tea to wash food

down with. Sip, don’t slurp, your tea and swallow before eating.

The BayBuSINESS INTERVIEW The Bay

Print itor forget it!T here are not very many locally

owned and run stores in Richards Bay that have stood the test of time — one such

store, however, is the well-known and enthusiastically supported Kit’s Photo Store in the Boardwalk Centre. Kit moved to Richards Bay in 1984 — that’s a whopping 30 years ago — but, before he opened his photographic business, he was in shipping, even starting his own shipping company in partnership with his brother-in-law. After 10 years, however, Kit and his wife, Martine, decided to embark on a new journey that would lead them to own one of very few photo labs in Zululand.

Take yourself back to October 1994. For those of you who, like me, were around in those days, think back to the original Boardwalk, the pride and joy of Zululand as our first ‘real’ mall. Filled with excitement for his new challenge and what the future might hold, Kit

opened the doors of Kit’s Photo, a brand that would go on to become the leading photographic store in Zululand, keeping on keeping on through recession, the evolution of technology and revamps.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves… Kit, following his dream, moved to Richards Bay but, as you can imagine, in those days the sleepy little seaside town didn’t pack much of a punch for a Durbanite like Kit. So, every weekend he would travel back to Durban and its city lights. There, one fateful weekend, he met Martine and, as all romantic tales go, they fell hopelessly in love and she followed him to Richards Bay (well, the falling in love part was romantic).

With Kit’s mind for business and Martine’s experience in retail, they were the perfect couple to create a business with innovation, longevity and growth. A mere year after opening their doors

in what was then a 32 square metre store, the business was running like a well-oiled machine and had grown into a 64 square metre lab selling any- and everything to do with photos and framing. Soon thereafter, they upgraded to a 90 square metre store, cementing their position as the photo lab of choice in Zululand. By 2002, the shop had become one of the only AGFA Superlabs in the area, filling a 180 square metre space.

Like any business in what may be termed ‘luxury retail’, times haven’t always been easy. But, like every great success story, it’s not about smooth sailing — it’s about facing hardships and overcoming them to achieve success, whilst still keeping your integrity intact. For Kit and Martine, honesty and integrity are the foundation of their business, the driving force through which they have maintained

BuSINESS FEATuREThe bay

their clientele and suppliers. It is also how they have kept their staff loyal and happy. It’s refreshing to walk into a store where you find the same people working there that were there 20 years ago and it says a lot about the type of business this is and people that the owners are. Sintha and Priscilla are what Kit likes to call the nucleus of the business, Jeysen and Moses are the managers of the shop and head up an A&B team to keep the shop open and running smoothly every day of the week. Kit and Martine believe that they are part and parcel of the business’s success. But, while growth within a business and its people is definitely a key ingredient to a long and prosperous business, growth with evolution is just as important.

‘Adapting is the most important thing in this business, where your product and way of doing things is forever changing.

You need to stay abreast of new trends and keep your customers happy and this is why we always invest in the latest things,’ says Kit.Kit and Martine pride themselves on being innovative and implementing services and products that will set them apart from their competitors or any conventional photo lab. ‘We are so lucky to have had and still have the kind of support that we have from the locals and even as far north as Pongola. We make it our mission to always be abreast of the times and offer a one-stop shop for all our customers’ photo and framing needs,’ says Kit.

The longevity of the business is truly impressive when you consider the fact that in the last 10 years, mainly because of the recession and advances in technology, the number of photo labs has diminished drastically over the years. How have they managed to stay

Page 21: The Bay Magazine Edition 2

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o. z a | 21

The BayFEATuRE The Bay

afloat? Kit believes that it is because of their hands-on approach and the fact that the Boardwalk is a regional shopping centre, laying claim to a lot of foot traffic.

In an era that has seen massive growth in the number of technological chain stores and smart phones, as well as the ability to buy online, it is a much harder market to compete in lucratively. Kit’s mind for business, however, has led to the introduction of a broader scope to the business, with DTP and novelty work, such as printing on mugs, photobooks, canvas printing, printing on T-shirts, pillow bags, etc. Martine also runs one of the largest volume framing departments in Zululand.

During my interview with the couple, they pointed out that they are one of a few independent retailers left in the mall, which means that when

you support them, you are indirectly supporting Richards Bay, as your money will go on to support other local businesses. When you support chain stores, that money goes to the company’s head office — when you support local stores, the money stays in the area and boosts the local economy and, at the end of the day, helps a family to live, send their kids to school and support you for another day.

As technology takes over more and more, there is nothing like a memory printed, framed and hung on your wall to ensure that that memory lasts a lifetime. As Kit says, you can stick a USB into a screen and watch pictures slide by, but they can get lost and they don’t offer the same experience as having photos up on your wall for people to admire and to allow you to look back at times gone by – ‘To my mind, you gotta print it or forget it!’

dream you’re a city girl — what made you move to Zululand?I grew up in Durban, but when I met my late husband, Chadd, it was love at first sight. We dated and during that time I travelled regularly to his family home in Mevamhlope (outside Empangeni). I saw that his heart was with the local rural population and I grew to love them and the area. When we married, I moved here and we worked side by side, determined to make radical changes. Our two boys were born and our family grew, as did our rural family. When Chadd died in a motorbike accident in December 2009, I carried on with the work and I haven’t stopped yet.

you have two young sons. How do you juggle being a single parent and managing 1 700 orphans all at the same time?My boys Jedd (eight) and Kadde (five) are amazing and they are part of the reason why I do this every day. I want them to be world-changers one day and this is the best way to teach them how to do that — leading by example. They go on many adventures with me and they understand that the work that I do is important. I’m blessed with the fantastic support of Chadd’s parents, Peter and Shelley, who are very involved in both of the boys’ lives, as well as every aspect of IOP (Izulu Orphan Project).

you’ve used your iT background and designed a computer system to help your npo. can you tell us about it?There is no ‘orphanage’ for me. I believe that these young children, who have seen their families decimated by HIV/AIDS, belong at home, where they can remain culturally intact and be raised by their siblings and older relatives while their basic needs — including education, food and social support — are taken care of by IOP. To do this, I designed the orphan management computer programme that geo-locates each rural home while a database records and updates their income, health and education results and documents. This is not a hand-out programme, but rather a hand-up programme. It’s easy to give to the needy, but we want to offer them a chance to improve their lives. I’ve seen first-hand that it works and radically changes lives.

What is the dream, the goal? That I will reach every rural orphan and vulnerable child in South Africa and then Africa. This is just the beginning.

What got you through the hard days when you were newly-widowed and now as a

single parent?First and foremost, my faith. Then, my family and my friends. These three ‘f’s’ are the basis of surviving anything, or any situation. I also love running and spend time doing this with our faithful rescue dog, Tequila, in the fields around Felixton, where I have built a home. Sailing is a sport that I’ve recently found again and there are few things better than whipping across the sea on a beautiful day.

What are the biggest challenges in running a project such as this?Three days after Chadd died, a young boy broke into the office attached to our house, stole our three charity laptops and burnt our office to the ground. It was also the day before a Christmas party for 1 500 orphans. With Chadd’s passing, the Zululand community were incredible and when the Christmas party volunteers saw the damage, the money poured in. With these funds, we built new offices outside our property. This year we are supporting 1 700 orphans in 738 families and we cover an area of 1 200 square kilometres.

Of course, our daily challenge is ensuring that there are sufficient funds to keep us

going. We have been blessed with some amazing sponsors and we couldn’t go on without them. Despite this, there are times when we are uncertain of the future of the programmes, because we don’t know what the future holds financially. I cope with this by staying faithful — that if we are doing the right thing, if we are going in the right direction — the funds will always be there and that we will never be let down. I’m continually excited about what the future holds for IOP and believe that my dreams and visions are going to be brought to life.

Izulu Orphan Projects has no government support and is wholly reliant on raising R240 000 per month to run the various programmes, including education costs, the daily and monthly feeding programmes, early childhood development in 26 rural crèches and building new homes. DarYlVISSErIn our last edition, we introduced you to our regular feature on photographers in Zululand that you should look out for. We are really blessed to have some truly amazing photographers here, all unique and with different styles, but with one thing in common — they are all brilliant! In this edition, we are profiling Daryl Visser, a photographer who we think you should consider when you next want to capture a special moment. Born and bred in The Bay, Daryl’s eye for photography stems from his heart and not from a book. With no formal training, but with a genuine love for the art of photography, Daryl picked up his first camera a mere two years ago and since then has trained himself to become a remarkable exponent of the craft of photography. In this astonishingly short space of time he has had work published in the DHL 2014 International Capture Africa calendar and also captured the winning image in Country Life magazine’s Face of Africa, thus cementing his position as a top photographer in this area. Specialising in wildlife and action sport photography, Daryl Visser is this month’s local photographer to look out for.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I have lived in Richards Bay all my life. I went to the Richards Bay Afrikaans High School up to Standard 8, going on to Kearsney College in Durban when I was offered a full sports bursary and matriculating there in 2001. After school, I played rugby in Wales at a semi-professional level. I have been part of Wurth South Africa as a customer service consultant for the past seven years.

How long have you been a photographer? I picked up a camera for the first time two years ago, but I have always had a passion and love for art and photography.

What or who got you started in photography and did you study? I have no formal photographic training, but a good friend of mine, Nobby Clarke, has helped me and shown me the way. I am also a member of the Beachcombers Photographic Club.

What gives you ideas or inspires you to create your imagery?A great photographer, Ansel Adams, says it best: ‘I hope that my work will encourage self-expression in others and stimulate the search for beauty and creative excitement in the great world around us.’ and ‘You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. How would you describe your style? A moment in space and time captured alongside every emotion of the human spirit for all to see for eternity.

What cameras do you shoot with?My blood is red and l love using Canon equipment. I use a semi-pro setup with a Canon7D body with various Canon lenses and I have a second Canon body as a backup. I also have a GoPro for all the more extreme trips, like hiking up the Berg and capturing and documenting the trips.

How important is photoshop/ adobe lightroom to your final images?I very rarely use Photoshop to post-process images. I prefer using Adobe Lightroom. I will only use Photoshop when I really need to change or alter images and manipulate them in a more artistic way.

Who is your idol in the industry and how has he helped to shape your photographic style? There are some big names that have influenced and inspired me — great photographers like Greg du Toit, Morkel Erasmus, Andrew Aveley, Kierran Allan,

Nobby Clarke, Hannes Lochner and many others. All of these photographers have their own style and they have all inspired me.

fave place to shoot in Zululand? The Umfolozi Reserve is a great place to spend quality time outdoors. I also love our local surf spot at Alkanstrand, St Lucia, Cape Vidal and many more — the whole of Zululand has some incredible places to photograph.

destination where you’ve always wanted to shoot?I recently spent time in the Kgalagadi on the border of Botswana and, if I had to choose a destination, to revisit, the Kgalagadi would be first on my list.

What do you think is the trickiest thing to photograph?I would have to say people.

What, to your mind, makes a brilliant photo? When you look at an image and you get lost in the picture — that ‘Wow’ moment when you see something and it inspires you. It does not have to be perfect, follow all the rules or have been taken by a pro. It’s the images that speak to you that are brilliant.

It’s no secret that Zululand has amazing weather and, when you experience the endless sunny days that we do, the last thing that

you want to do is to be cooped up inside all day — we have a close-knit community and we are quite a sociable bunch of people! So,

with this in mind, I did some research and found that the best way to escape from the house and enjoy a great cuppa and some chit-

chat with your mates whilst also entertaining your kids, is to escape to what I like to call ‘café havens’. These are definitely not your

Average-Joe cafés —they offer much more — a unique and tranquil setting in which to get away and relax while you have a bite to

eat or just to drink great coffee. In short, they offer a simple, unpretentious lifestyle and, most of all, an exceptional experience. We

thought that we’d find local places that epitomise all of this and more whist remaining unique in their own right!

Coffee Shops with a difference

Nestled between Mtubatuba and St. Lucia, surrounded by lush green hills and mountains, lies the Chane Cheese Farm and Lodge, a small family-run cheesery which offers a range of exceptional, high-quality South African cheeses.

A visit to the farm is a very special outing where people can not only purchase, but also taste, cheese, as well as a variety of gourmet products in the Cheese Shop and Curio Shop. Children will have a whale of a time as they have the pleasure of milking goats and feeding the animals. Visitors can browse through a delicious range of goat/cow cheeses, home bakes, dried fruits, biltong, preserves and handmade gifts, or you can just relax in the fully-licensed restaurant/coffee shop situated next to a swimming pool — just right for hot summer days. Their must-haves are their wood-oven baked pizzas, homemade beef hamburgers, tramazinis, cheese platters, farm breakfasts and excellent coffee. New additions are the Chocolate Dipping and Sweet Shop and a great play area for kids, so your little ones are assured of more than enough to do whilst you catch up on some much-needed gossip. Apart from dairy tours and the fact that this is a great destination to hang out with family and friends, the beautiful setting has made it a very popular event and wedding destination. And, if you’re having so much fun that you don’t want to go home, they offer a peaceful and reasonably-priced spot to spend the night in one of their many forest-view self-catering cottages. This is the ultimate place for the day or night break that you’ve been dreaming of!

Tucked away three kilometres south of Nottingham Road you will find a little piece of paradise, as a group of eight moms, who

recently decided to take a night off and head down to Indigo Fields in search of some ‘me time’ and just to relax, will tell you. Well, I believe that there is no other place in KZN — at least that I have found — that fulfils this dream in quite this way. It is fantastic! Run by husband and wife team, Jennifer and Paul, with a list of other family members on staff as well, Indigo Fields is truly a gem.

I’ll run you through our experience but, I promise you, only a visit can do this awesome place justice, but I'll try to put into words what it is like.

We booked for the full-day overnight stay and, despite the chilly weather, arrived to a warm welcome at Indigo Fields. With friendly smiles all round, the admin was swiftly sorted and we were whisked off to our private breakfast area to enjoy a Champagne breakfast by a log fire in a cosy room set aside just for the eight of us. It was a toss-up whether to go for the coffee or the Champagne, so we decided to opt for both! After breakfast, which was fresh, healthy and delicious, we were taken to change into our cosy robes to start the day of pampering and, let me tell you, the robes alone are enough to make you feel very special. No other spa robe will ever match this. Our group

divided up and off we went by Jeep to our first forest experience. A short walk into the ‘jungle’ and over the bridge we found our luxurious tented day spa and, oh, how we oohed and aahed! At this point I was thinking, ‘No, really? This is amazing!’ We had our head massages in the open, on three chairs placed outside the tent, with birds chirping, a light breeze blowing and the most perfect massage done with enthusiasm — you can feel that the therapists are happy from the way that they treat and massage you. I really did not want to get up and go inside the tent after our glorious start, but the promise of the next amazing treatment made us move. The Indigo Fields’ Special Herbal Facial was also extremely good. The products smelled amazing and instantly, between the fresh air and the amazing aromas, all your senses are on fire and you are really experiencing relaxation to the max. By then we felt as if we would need stretchers to get back to the Jeep, but we dragged our already-relaxed bodies to our transport only because of the promise that there was more ahead.

So, to wake our limp bodies up again, we went into the steam room, where we laughed, sweated, joked and laughed some more until, now wide-awake again and our bodies alive with sensation, we climbed into the Jacuzzi. This was where

the party started, with another round of champagne and orange juice, time to chat, relax and enjoy the water therapy that we felt was just what the doctor had ordered. This was followed by a quick full-body salt scrub that was fantastic and exactly what was needed after the steam room and Jacuzzi. We felt alive and ravenous and more than ready for lunch at our private table by the pool. The light lunch menu covered everyone’s likes and we had to make some tough choices to decide on what we wanted. The meal was just perfect — delicious, healthy and prepared with fresh produce from their farm. I chose a salad and the butternut and feta tart, which was light and full of flavour… perfection. We all tasted a bit of each other’s food as it all looked so good! Liquid refreshments of all kinds were offered and this by now very cheery bunch of ladies chattered on like there was no tomorrow!

Sated and relaxed, smiling and laughing, we were ushered off to our final treatment at 2.30pm — where had the day gone! We had our final full-body massage in the boma, feeling ridiculously relaxed; most of us actually fell asleep during the massage.

You really do feel that the staff want you to feel that they are only there to pamper you and ensure that you enjoy every second.

We were sad that our spa day had come to an end but, exhausted, oily and totally relaxed, we were ready to go and find a couch, which is exactly where you are taken for your truffles and Amarula. Feet up, relaxed, oh, wow — what a day. We were then reminded that the day was not over and that dinner orders had to go in. We had to decide whether dinner would be in the boma or in our rooms. We immediately screamed, ‘Pyjama party!’ and opted for dinner at the house after a shower and a quick-catch up with our families.

Our guest suite was a fully-equipped four-bedroom house with a fireplace and ample room for eight. We spent the evening chatting, laughing, skinnering and, best of all, had the best bonding time ever with a glass of wine around a cosy fire — a perfect way to end a truly memorable day.

I must admit that the best part was being served dinner while we were all in our PJs. The food was just sublime and again we

swopped plates and had a taste of everything, from the starter to the main and dessert, before agreeing that this had been a day well spent.

A good night’s sleep later we were up early for coffee and rusks, chatting about everything under the sun as only ladies can, before we went off for our final breakfast, which was served in yet another area that we had not till then been to. A full hot breakfast later we could not say enough good things about the spa, the food, the people, the vibe and the place — INDIGO FIELDS is highly recommended.

They also cater for couples, moms-and-daughters and pamper parties. There seems to be no limit to what they offer or their ability to meet all your needs.

Just down the road from Richards Bay, nestled in the seaside village of Zinkwazi, you will find a ‘kids and teens only’ resort called Sugar Bay. With its own waterfront and boasting several free-choice water and land activities, campers who visit Sugar Bay are rewarded not only with the physical paybacks of these activities, but also a wide range of emotional benefits.

After the Sugar Bay experience for kids aged between seven and 17, parents will often remark on the huge positive change in their kids. The shy child goes home confident, chatting about his new-found friends and all of them just love their time at camp. The testimonials on the Sugar Bay website speak volumes.

Counsellors all have fun funky names that the kids absolutely love. One of these is ‘Solo’, the surf instructor. At Sugar Bay, surfing is one of the free-choice certified

activities and campers can spend time learning to surf and then go on to hone this skill progressively at every successive camp that they attend. ‘Solo’ explains, ‘When you ride your first wave, you are more present in the moment than at any other moment in your life. Your child will remember this feeling forever’. Only experienced counsellors are used to teach and lifeguards are on duty at all times, both on the beach and at the furthermost point, for all swimmers or surfers in the ocean. Safety is the number one priority at Sugar Bay.

This is how lifelong memories are created at Sugar Bay, and how children are ‘grown’.

contact Sugar Bay for more information on how to let your kids ride a wave to a happier life! www.sugarbay.co.za; https://www.youtube.com/user/sugarbaycamp1

As a parent, you always worry about sending your child away, but now I know that the kids love it! They love it so much that, although they have two days in which they can send you emails or letters, to date I have never received anything more than a ‘we doing fine having fun’ letter. And that’s it — nothing more until the pickup. With no comms, it’s a very long week for a parent, but the camp keeps you well-informed via email and a quick Wednesday update with a photo or two — sufficient to keep your mommy-heart at peace till Sunday. For days afterwards, my kids talked about the camp and their friends and, of course, ‘When can we go again?’ always comes up. I wish that I were a kid again to be able experience the awesomeness of Sugar Bay. lorinda Scott

The BayTRAVEL REVIEW bayThe Bay

My experience at Sugar Bay was and always is awesome!

This time I was in a cabin called Blue Swell where I made loads of new friends.

My favourite activities were paintball and soccer and we played soccer whenever we got the chance and often that was on the beach. With paintball there was a kind of league table and high scores. I got to level three and got the nickname of Rambo!

The food was epic and the only problem was breakfast, as there was always a fight to get to the toast. Lose that one and you missed out on warm toast! ‘But the food is really great,’ said his friend, Datin. And, when you feel like something nice, like ice cream, there was always the tuck shop.

The staff and counsellors were really funny and my favourite was FIFA as, given that the World Cup was on at the time, the week was themed Rio. My dad brought me a Dutch replica shirt from Holland, so guess who I supported?

The only sad thing about Sugar Bay was the party on the last night, which was fun, but you knew that you were going to miss all the friends that you had made during the week.

The only good thing about leaving on the Sunday was seeing mum and dad again and knowing that I’ll be going back again one day soon and I can’t wait!

Homemade LemonadeinGredienTS:• 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice

(around 9-10 large lemons)• 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups superfine sugar• 3 cups water (room temperature)• 5 cups ice water• 3-quart container with screw-on lid

direcTionS:1. Squeeze the lemons. Roll lemons on the counter. Press hard! This

will make juicing them much easier. Cut lemons in half. (An adult should cut them for kids who have not been taught how to cut safely.) Extract the juice using a juicer until you have 2 cups of lemon juice.

2. Mix the sugar. Add 3 cups of water and sugar to pitcher. Use the least amount first; you can always add more later. If you like your lemonade tart (as we do!), you won’t want to. Screw on lid and shake for 30 seconds or until sugar is dissolved. A minute or two after shaking the water should look clear.

3. Make lemonade! Add lemon juice pouring it through a small strainer or slotted spoon to catch the seeds. Don’t worry if you don’t catch them all. That’s how people know it’s homemade. If you like pulp scoops some of it out of the strainer and add it along with the ice water. Screw on lid and shake again. Refrigerate and then enjoy!!!

FEATuRE

We all know that life can be hectic, what with kids, work and making sure that your home is running smoothly,

and often we women begin to neglect our bodies and never allow ourselves some much-needed ‘me time’. And, moms, by ‘me time’ I don’t mean washing your hair! After all, a happy and healthy body, soul and mind make for a very happy woman…

I was recently invited to experience some ‘me time’ at the African Essence Spa in Five Ways Mall, a spa that in my book is a top-contender not only here, but in the whole of KZN. Owned by Chantal and Tracy, this is a spa that is backed not only by a strong business sense, but by two women who from a young age have had a passion for everything to do with health and beauty — something which I believe will see their business go far! My therapist, Sebenzile, was a very cheerful person who immediately made me feel comfortable and welcome. Her speciality is massage therapy, which comes as no surprise as she is fantastic at it, but what does come as a surprise is that she’s only been in the industry for a year. To my mind, her skills surpass that of many people who have been doing it for years!

I had the AFRICAN BLISS package (their most popular package) which includes a full-body fusion massage with an

Africology facial, an African head massage and an African foot massage. This is a treatment that pampers you from head to toe, allowing you to lie back and relax for two hours of uninterrupted bliss! The full-body fusion massage is a definite winner if you are stressed or have any pain and stiffness, as it’s a technique that uses deep tissue massage with a bit more pressure than usual. This improves blood circulation (goodbye cellulite!), stimulates the lymphatic system, which in turn improves the immune system, and it also encourages tissue regeneration, which helps to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks (every woman’s worst nightmare). The oil used is a really great blend of neroli, rose, geranium, clove and lavender in an almond oil base. It relieves stress and also leaves your body feeling amazingly moisturized for days after the massage. The massage is broken up into stages, starting with the legs, then on to the stomach and the arms and, once your front is done, you turn over onto your back and the process starts again from legs to back and then arms. It’s complete and utter bliss, leaving you feeling utterly relaxed in the best way possible. There was really nothing about it that I could criticise, or that I would change. Sebenzile has a magical touch — she was born to do this! She, like all the therapists at the spa, has an absolute passion for people, health and beauty.

Next up was the Africology facial, which uses Regim A, a plant-based product that nourishes, moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin — all round an outstanding product. She began the facial with a milky cleanser, followed by the toner sprizter. The skin is then exfoliated with an exfoliator under steam for about 15 minutes. After she had cleansed my skin, I was given a 25-minute massage, which was phenomenal and, even though it does involve getting oil in your hair, experiencing the utter relaxation of it all is well worth it! After that, she applied a rejuvenating mask, which was left on for 20 minutes, and during this time you once again just lie back while she massages your feet. Once the mask has set, the facial is completed with a toner sprizter and moisturizer and then, sadly, it’s back to reality!

The spa offers many treatments and many types of massages, mani’s and pedi’s, as well as hair-removal, hair-tinting and makeup — actually, there’s not much that they don’t do!

It is very difficult to put such an amazing experience into words, so I’ll simply close by saying that if you need some ‘me time’, let Christmas come early and visit African Essence Spa to spoil yourself — you will not be disappointed!

Pampered to perfection!

The BayTRAVEL REVIEW The BayFEATuRE

Buying a car at first view can be like falling in love. Well, kind of, anyway. It may not the best thing that ever happens to you but, lets be honest, it is all about how the car is going to fit into your long-term lifestyle. And that’s what really impressed me about the All-New MINI.

I was recently invited to the MINI launch in Cape Town, and I must say that if I were in the market and looking for a new ‘companion’, it would be difficult to not be impressed with this little gem. This is an all-new version of the now ‘old’ favourite that has been fettled with in all the right areas.

It is unmistakably MINI through and through, with those classic proportions and rounded details it is as good looking as ever while being slightly longer, wider and taller. I love how the designers have been able to work out how alleviate any cramped cabin feeling and keep the tapered side windows and hovering roof. They have also rehashed the interior just enough for it to make more sense. The speedo and window switches have been moved to the more natural and intuitive positions and yet the cabin has retained its MINI quirk and charm.

The drive feels as quick as you could need, with 0-100km/h arriving in 9.9 seconds.

Steering is direct, agile and predictable. However it is the ride quality was where the ‘all-new’ part of the game really came to the fore. This MINI handles the bumps and curves impressively well and manages it all with the extensively redesigned axle. The steering is sharp and direct like it should be in a MINI and it handles playfully, but thankfully not at the expense of comfort.

If you pair all of this with the turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, it serves up the kind of performance and user-intuitiveness that belies its 72 kW power output. The terrifically responsive engine, offering strong performance from just 1000 rpm all the way through the rev band, backs up a satisfying thrum from the engine. That gives it economy (5.4 l/100 km) as well as the personality to truly enjoy driving it all the time.

When you add to the mix the new 5-Door variant and there is a chance for even those women in a family way to have the practicality meshed personality that has held a lot of charm to those looking for a car to create and personalise accordingly.

Does this third-generation MINI trump its predecessors? Yes, because it will become a true driver’s favourite, yet still be a car everyone can fall in love with. Few cars have

the range of performance and handling attributes of the MINI but now it has a broader appeal thanks to its improved ride quality and everyday usability. At R 197,401, what’s not to love?

On the huntIt is hard to argue that this new MINI is anything but a major step forward...

BuSINESS

conventional business looks at sales from the standpoint of three variables, namely sales, expenses and profits

defined by the formula: Sales - Expenses = Profits. In this narrow approach, each variable depends on the other forcing businesses to look at either increasing sales or decreasing expenses in order to influence profitability.

There are only five ways to truly grow your business: Getting more leads, converting those leads into customers, getting customers to make bigger purchases at higher price points, getting them to buy more often and getting more sales at higher profit margins. If you increase all of those factors by just 10 percent, you can give your bottom line a massive boost.

I want to share five simple, proven (and low-cost) strategies with you.

Strategy 1 Find your bestselling product and increase the price by 10 percent. If you don’t know

what your strongest product is, now is the time to find out. Once you figure it out, boost the price on that item or service by 10 percent. It’s an increase so small, most people won’t even notice.

Strategy 2To increase your average Rand sale, create sales scripts for you (and your salespeople). Sales scripts help to frame your sales process, especially if you don’t consider yourself a natural ‘salesperson’. The sales script should also help initiate and build rapport, which leads to higher sales.

Strategy 3To increase your average number of transactions, create loyalty and referral programs. While a lot of companies use this strategy, many don’t use it correctly. To get the most out of a reward program, it should be targeted at your highest-yield customers - those truly loyal customers or clients who don’t haggle on price. This involves segmenting your client base. Done right, you can create both a rewards program and

a referral program that is profitable versus one that simply defaults to discounts or giveaways.

Strategy 4To increase your conversion rates create a guarantee, especially if none of your competitors have one. Guarantees are great ways to covert customers and establish long-term customer relationships. This is especially true in categories where guarantees are hard to “guarantee” or in industries that don’t offer any. Then advertise the guarantee. This will boost the number of referrals among current clients and increase the number of qualified leads.

Strategy 5To increase your number of leads, test and measure low-cost ways first; then move to paid advertising. Lead generation is actually the most costly of the profit-boosting strategies, so start with low-cost ways you can track for results before you start spending thousands on an advertising campaign.

a quick and inexpensive way to dress up your walls is with this amazing DIY fabric art. I love the look and they are so easy to create! There

are so many choices of fabric out there… the possibilities are simply endless and you can pick and choose to suit your style and colour preferences! Here’s how you can make your own fabric art.

Supplies needed:• Frames • Fabric • Hot Glue• Hammer and nails or command strips

instructions:The first things first decide how big you want your frames; this is all dependant on the size of the space you want to decorate. Mr Price home, Sheet Street or @Home will have plenty options to suit everyone’s needs. You can recycle old frames by sanding them and white washing them. Alternatively, if you are feeling really adventurous why not make your own frame.

Next, remove the cardboard from the frame and tape them to the wall. This will help you decide where to place the frames on the wall and how far to space them out before you start going gung-ho with the hammer and nails.

Next cut 1/8 inch off one edge of the cardboard to allow room for the fabric when placing it back in the frame. Then cut out a piece of fabric about 2 inches wider than the cardboard. After that wrap the cardboard like a present with the fabric, you can use a hot glue gun or just wood glue and then place the piece back in the frame.

Once finished hang up your new fabric art and admire it on your wall. The possibilities really are endless with this simple piece of decor so Get creative and send us your DIY fabric art!!!

Summer is finally just around the corner! Winter is not the best season for dieting, but at the moment everyone seems to be

rushing to the gym and doing an extra bit of cardio to get rid of the stubborn kilograms that have crept up on you over the winter period. We keep hearing about juicing and taking challenges, but just what is that? No, it’s not what you are thinking — I’m talking about veggie juicing and fitness challenges.

How do they work?

Juicing your veggies is an easy and effective way to detox or add vitamins to your diet. It also increases energy and boosts the immune system. There are, however, downsides —you need a juicer and, unfortunately, the cheaper models seem designed to paint you and your kitchen green every time! The other drawback is managing all the various combinations, as not all of them taste good or give you the results that you need. These all make juicing a tricky affair but, before I give you the solution, let’s figure out this challenge thing...

What are fitness challenges? In a nutshell, they are programmes

and diets that are designed by personal trainers to help people meet their goals within a relatively short time. There are some downsides, like doing hours of prep cooking, which tends to get tedious and which is often the main reason for people failing to meet the goals set. As you know, it is 90 percent diet and 10 percent training, so how do we solve the dilemma that blocks us from achieving the shape that we so ardently desire?

Well, thankfully there is an eating concept called Fitchef, which provides and delivers excellent quality precooked ready-to-eat healthy meals and monthly packages. These include conveniently packaged juiced veggie/fruit smoothies that will make life a whole lot easier. Not only will Fitchef provide you with all that you need in order to achieve your goals, but the food will also satisfy your taste-buds with cleverly spiced fare which will not in any way spoil what you want to achieve. The dishes contain no preservatives, refined ingredients, sugar or refined salt. Meats are all from grass-fed/free range animals and are free of antibiotics and hormones. They are incredibly imaginative and nothing like the usual bland old diets — I mean, cauliflower mash cottage pie! ‘Awesome’ is the only word to describe it.

Nutrition is the most important factor in your training programme and it can make or break your results. A good diet will improve your energy levels, balance your blood sugar, improve your overall performance in all sports and improve your health, all whilst making you look better — need I say more.

As a personal trainer, I know the secret to weight-loss and toning. It is simple — eat clean and train hard. Visiting the gym twice a day, trying hardcore Bootcamp and doing long-distance runs every day means very little without a good nutritional foundation. We spend about four to eight percent of our day training and the other 90 percent going about our daily activities, like working, driving and EATING... I am sure you get an idea of where I’m going with this.

Take up the challenges trending and, better yet, get a personal trainer and start making a change in your health and fitness plan so that you can enter summer looking as if you live in the gym! Eat clean and train hard — it’s that simple.
