Editorial. Hi once again from your editor.

Mr Michael Choi. We have lost a fantastic community worker for the electorate of Capalaba. The next

person has tremendously large shoes to fill and I hope he can fulfil his duties equally. The Club wishes to thank Mr Michael Choi for his commitment over the past years with our Club, if it wasn’t for him,

we wouldn’t have most of our machines in the shed, the Printing of your Newsletter, and other support he has given.

The club wishes Michael all the best for the future, and after talking to him on Wednesday 28th

March, we will have a

new member in the not too distant future.

Open Letter from Mr MICHAEL CHOI. To all my friends, colleagues and partners in the community Last Saturday, the people of Queensland spoke firmly and decisively and I would like to congratulate Premier Newman and his team on their successful campaign. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the residents of the electorate of Capalaba and the people of Queensland over the last 11 years. I have absolutely no regrets. I have served with honour, integrity and hard work. I thank you for your trust, your partnership and your assistance in making Queensland the best State in the country and Redland City the best place to live and to raise a family. Just like a book unless a chapter is closed another cannot be explored. I am looking forward to what lies ahead with anticipation, eagerness and a strong sense of purpose; the very same spirit which has driven me all these years as the Member for Capalaba. I have enclosed my personal email address in case you would like to keep in contact. In saying goodbye I will leave you two of my favourite quotes. They guide me every day of my life. ‘And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with the Lord’. Micah 6:8 ‘The measure of a man is how he treats those who can do absolutely nothing for him.’ God bless Michael Choi

When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.

What is the main ingredient of WD-40?

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40 is? Don't lie and don't cheat. WD-40. Who knew; 'Water Displacement #40'. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound.. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you... WD-40 uses: 1. Protects silver from tarnishing. 2. Removes road tar and grime from cars. 3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings. 4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery. 5. Keeps flies off cows. 6. Restores and cleans chalkboards. 7. Removes lipstick stains. 8. Loosens stubborn zippers. 9. Untangles jewellery chains. 10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks. 11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill. 12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing. 13. Removes tomato stains from clothing. 14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots. 15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors. 16. Keeps scissors working smoothly? 17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes. 18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for that nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks. 19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40! 20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super-fast slide. 21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers... 22. Rids kid’s rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises. 23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.. 24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close. 25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers. 26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles. 27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans 28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling. 29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly. 30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools. 31. Removes splattered grease on stove. 32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging. 33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs. 34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell). 35. Removes all traces of duct tape. 36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

Page 7: The Bayside Woodies Newsletter.baysidewoodturners.com/media/2012-apr-bayside-newsletter.pdf · The Bayside Woodturners & Woodcrafters Club Inc. would like to state, that it’s objective

37. Florida’s favourite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.' 38. The favourite use in the state of New York, WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements. 39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states. 40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch. 41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag. 42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone! 43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start. P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

ALERTS TO THREATS IN 2012 EUROPE. : BY JOHN CLEESE.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off 'to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the Country’s military capability. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

SCROLLSAW INSPIRATIONS.

By Diana Thompson. Via Internet.

Practice Pattern Page.

The most frustrating part of compound sawing is a figure coming out distorted. In the beginning this caused me so many problems I was ready to throw my saw out the shop door. At one time, I thought maybe I couldn't do this, but I was just stubborn enough not to give up.

The main reason for distorted figures is us! When using the thicker, 1 1/2" stock with the scroll saw, its sometimes difficult to keep the feed running straight into the blade, especially when making sharp turns. It may not feel like you're doing so, but the blade is being pushed sideways, instead of running true, straight up and down. This is one of the draw backs of the flexibility of the scroll saw blade, but one that is easily solved with practice. The feel is subtle, and a conscious effort will be needed to know when you're doing this. You will feel the saw bog down a little after making a turn, like it's become harder to cut. The work may also jump up and down, sometimes out of control, when the blade is being pushed sideways. Back off just a little and let the blade right itself, then continue sawing. You will soon be aware of what is happening and will automatically back off every so often.

To help beginners, I've developed this practice page. For the best results and less frustration, if you're new to compound sawing, start with the softest wood available, such as Sugar Pine, which is the easiest wood in the world to work with, White Pine, or Basswood. The harder the wood, the more apt we are to distort the blade, so give yourself a break in the beginning, and stay away from hardwoods until you've had a little practice. Then of course, experiment with everything! You'll soon discover your own favourites.

Starting with the smallest figure, work your way up to cutting the largest one. The #5 blade can be run at 1800 strokes per minute without breaking, but that doesn't mean you can't slow it down until you have a little better control over your saw. As you progress you will discover a feel for the subtle changes as the wood gets thicker. Of course by then you're sick of dolphins and will never cut another one, but they will all be straight, with no distortions! (Sandpaper covers a multitude of sins)

For the very best results, saw to the waste side of the pattern lines. On some of the more delicate patterns, sawing directly on the lines results in removing too much material, which weakens the figure and breakage, will occur.

Just print this page cut out the pattern below and go to town.

Make the pattern 50cm + 30 + 20cm.

Bandsaws. General Safety Information. Before any work is done read the cautions listed carefully. Caution.

A. Working safely prevents accidents.

B. Follow proper operating procedures, despite familiarity gained from frequent use of the bandsaw.

C. All saws are slightly different in operational procedures.

D. Always remember that being careless for a fraction of a second is sufficient time to inflict severe injury.

Warnings.

A. Think safety, Safety is the combination of Operator Common Sense and Alertness at all times when Bandsaw is being used.

B. Do not attempt to operate a Bandsaw without prior knowledge of its operational functions.

C. The operation of bandsaws can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes or body, or body parts being dragged into the path of the blade.

D. Always observe the following safety precautions:- 1. Use proper blade for work piece. 2. Make sure that blade guides are positioned and adjusted correctly. 3. Check to make sure blade is tensioned correctly 4. Be sure blade is tracking correctly. 5. Align table to blade 6. Choose the proper speed for the cutting operation. 7. After turning saw on, allow blade to come to full speed before attempting any cutting

operation. 8. Support work piece properly and use a smooth steady feed to guide work through the cut. 9. Keep hands away and out of line with moving parts. 10. Always wear eye protection. 11. Wear protective apparel; do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neck-ties, rings, bracelets which

may get caught in moving parts of the saw. 12. Wear safety glasses, everyday glasses are not safety glasses. 13. Never operate when tired, intoxicated or on medications that cause drowsiness. 14. Keep work area clean, cluttered or dirty work areas invite accidents 15. Work area should be well lighted. 16. When some-one is operating the Bandsaw, NEVER walk up behind them whilst they are

operating the saw, ALWAYS approach from their eye vision 17. Never instruct a member operating the Bandsaw to HURRY UP,

AS THIS WILL IN TURN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

18. Wear face mask or a Dust mask. 19. Other members or spectators must keep a safe distance from the Bandsaw, and do not advise

the operator whilst saw is operating.

Page 10: The Bayside Woodies Newsletter.baysidewoodturners.com/media/2012-apr-bayside-newsletter.pdf · The Bayside Woodturners & Woodcrafters Club Inc. would like to state, that it’s objective

OPERATIONAL MAINTAINENCE. 1. Always unplug Band saw prior to inspection. 2. Consult operating instructions for specific maintaining and adjusting procedures. 3. Check for damaged parts, check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts,

breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the Bandsaws operation. 4. Use right tool for the job; do not force tool or attachment to a job for which it was not

designed. 5. Avoid accidental start-up; make sure that the saw is in the off position before plugging it in. 6. Handle work piece correctly, use PUSH STICKS when required, and protect hands from

possible injury. 7. Turn Bandsaw off immediately if it jams. 8. Never leave the Bandsaw running unattended, turn off power and do not leave the saw until the

blade is completely stopped. 9. Do not over reach keep proper footing and balance. 10. Keep hands and fingers away from all moving parts and blades, until saw has completely

stopped. 11. Be sure motor runs clockwise facing shaft end, blade must travel down toward table. 12. Do not force the cut. 13. Do not overheat the work piece, excess heat at the cut can damage the blade and reduce the

quality of the cut. 14. Avoid deflecting the blade, adjust the blade guides to hold the blade properly 15. Avoid shocking the blade, do not start a cut on a sharp corner 16. Turn switch off and disconnect power whenever bandsaw is not in use.

QUESTIONS.

If you use a Bandsaw, then you need to know how to operate the machine, and all machines are

different to operate.

How do I know if I have set the correct blade tension? Where should the blade be sitting on the wheels when running? What is the correct setting for adjusting the blade support rollers? What does the TPI of the blade designate? Do the teeth face up or down? What is the cutting capacity of the bandsaw? How accurate is the fence? Where is the blade tension wheel? How do you align the bandsaw table? How do you remove a blade? Width of the blade describes the---------- from tip of a --------- to ------ of blade. A wider blade will wander less and produce a straighter cut? True or False. Width of blade limits the radius which can be cut, a 1/4in blade will cut --- diameter. High cutting speeds are used on ---- materials. Describe how to install blade? How do you tension a blade? How do you track the blade? What are the functions of the blade guides? Is there any difference between the upper and lower blade guides? Describe contour sawing? Describe bevel cutting? What causes excessive blade breakage? What causes dulling of the blade? What causes crooked cuts? What causes blade twisting?

She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in

I bought her a bathroom scale.
