We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life

Center Gym between worship services.

Our Vision Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries

through worship, discipleship, and mission.

Our Mission REACH, TEACH, and SEND

We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal

life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Worship Services Break Free

Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.

Traditions

At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.

Connect

At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Freedom

At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Welcome to Shalimar UMC

Pentecost Sunday This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday follows fifty days after Easter. The date of Pentecost is then determined by Easter which is set by “The first full moon after the first day of Spring which can be as early as March 22nd and as late as April 15th.” A Primer for Church Worship, Hoyt Hickman This means Pentecost Sunday can fall anywhere between May 11th-June 4th. The name of Pentecost originated out of the tradition of the Feast of Weeks found in Leviticus 23:15-16. This observance lasted for fifty days. The fiftieth day was called Pentecost. In the book of Acts, the day of Pentecost took on new meaning as two significant events happened. First, the power of the Holy Spirit came as Jesus promised. Second, the Church was born. What we are doing at Shalimar United Methodist Church can be traced all the way back to Pentecost. On Pentecost Sunday we celebrate both the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. First, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the power of the Holy Spirit, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” (Acts 1:8) On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit did come with the sound of a rushing wind. Peter preached a sermon on repentance on that day and 3000 people were saved! The coming of the Holy Spirit fulfilled what Jesus promised and the disciple Peter was now empowered to lay the foundation for the birth of the Church. Second, we celebrate the birth of the Church. Jesus laid the foundation for the Church with His teaching of the Kingdom of God in His three years of earthly ministry. He specifically foretold of the coming of the Church when He told Peter, “Upon this rock I will build my church.” (Matthew 16:18) At Pentecost many amazing signs happened. One of which, was the same Peter which denied Jesus earlier becomes the bold leader of which Jesus foretold. What a significant day and season we now enter! May we receive the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can be the Church today! HAPPY PENTECOST DAY SHALIMAR UMC!

Prayer Chain

Next Sunday, we are excited to be starting a new sermon series called, Like a Child. So many times, we are rushing around and stressed with everything that life throws at us. It leaves us remembering the simplicity of things when we were children. In Mark 10:15, Jesus said, "Anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it." We want to take some time to slow down and have some fun with church life. Who is God to you really? What has he done and what can he do for you? Remember the wonders of seeing God from a child's eyes. This series is a perfect one to invite a friend to church. It's light-hearted and filled with love and grace. Take a moment and share with someone in your life who hasn't been to church in a while or someone you don't know very well who maybe needs a little bit more hope. Get ready to be taken back to your childhood. Get a little silly and loosen up, while remembering that God meets us exactly where we are and never leaves us, no matter how old we are. Sermons in the Series:

Weekend of May 26-27 | My God is For Me - Jeremiah 29:11

Weekend of June 2-3 | My God is With Me - Philippians 4:6-7

Weekend of June 9-10 | My God Forgives Me - 1 John 1:9

Weekend of June 16-17 | My God Can Do Anything - Daniel 3:16-18

Stewardship is a way of life, not an annual financial campaign. I believe the preceding statement best represents my beliefs regarding “stewardship”. Most dictionaries will primarily define a steward as “A person who manages another’s property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of another or others.” There are many verses in the Bible that describes who owns everything, such as Psalm 50:10-12, “Every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills…and the creatures of the field are mine…the world is mine, and all that is in it.” So, if the Lord owns everything, then we are just a temporary manager of his things. That means our homes, our cars, our clothes, and our other “Things” do not really belong to us! In effect, our role is to be the trustee, manager, and steward of 100% of what God entrusts to us during our lifetime. Now, I didn’t get to this point right away, it took a few years. However, I believe that many of you have already figured this out. You have already discovered God’s favor when you recognized your role and you became a steward of His possessions. Over the coming weeks and months, this space will be used to share our common passions from many different people. If you would love to be a part of this and share your thoughts on stewardship, please contact me 598-1641 or [email protected]. In His Service, Larry Mundy

What an outstanding Boy Scout Troop, sponsored by our church! We are especially proud of the long legacy of good leadership we have enjoyed through the years, and continue to enjoy now under Charles West. I remember how vital Scouting was for me in my formative years, and I see the same value in what they are doing today. Never has there been a greater time of need for good influences in the lives of our children. Unfortunately, The Boy Scouts of America has become the target of attacks from some, and misinformation from others. Most recently, there has been some press about the BSA changing its name. I share with you a letter from Scoutmaster Charles West. May God continue to bless and support their ministry. Pastor Brian Dale From Scoutmaster Charles West In light of the recent publicity surrounding BSA changes to include name change and addition of an all-female based youth program, here is a press fact sheet to read and share. News media, especially social media, has taken this and run with it putting their SPIN where they see fit to criticize. Some is very nasty and most is being promoted by folks who have no idea of what the change was, just base their opinion on negative news jabs. BSA is expanding, not caving to political pressure. It is not trying to feminize our male youth. BSA did not rename the organization...it is still the Boy Scouts of America! Boys will still be in ALL boy troops. It simply is adding an all-female youth program to compliment the other 7+ programs it offers. The Explorer Scout program has been coed almost 50 years, the Venture Scout Program is 20 years old and always been coed. Scouts BSA is not going to be coed, it simply offers the ability to create an all-female Scout Troop. Cub Scouts can add all girl dens, but not commingled. Regardless of your position on this, I’d ask everyone, in 10, 20, 30, or 50 years wouldn’t you rather deal with a man or women who was taught citizenship, love for their country, duty to God, teamwork, and leadership skills as a youth? Girls deserve this as much as our boy youth do. As an Eagle Scout and a member of the Executive Board of the Gulf Coast Council, I voted in support of this option when we were polled last fall. Girl Scouts made “Duty to God” flexible/optional in their creed several years ago (Which the media just glossed right over by the way) which has opened the door for BSA to offer a time proven quality curriculum to our girl leaders of tomorrow. Scouting needs our support more now than ever! Please pass along, and I’m happy to discuss further if you have any questions. https://scoutingwire.org/the-boy-scouts-of-america-organization-name-is-not-changing-and-other-facts-to-set-the-record-straight/ Thanks...Charles
