Principal’s Message The Hardest Part Is Starting… |BY THE EDITORS

When you’re running a race, everyone lines up at the

starting line, poised and ready. The signal is given – a starter’s

pistol – adrenaline pumping, the runners take off. This isn’t

quite the same way we start off our personal projects, unless

we’re world-class athletes. Even world class athletes do a lot

more work on their own the other 364 days of the year,

compared to those few seconds spent on the track trying to win

gold.

So where do you start? Well, just as you listed your

gifts, start with a list of what you need to do – from the smallest

detail to the largest thing you can think of that needs to happen

to get your plan off the ground. Don’t worry about any

particular order at first, just write it down or type it out as it

comes to you, for as long as it takes. When you’re done the list,

congratulate yourself – the hardest part of anything is getting

started, and you just got started, one item at a time. But, making

a list isn’t the same as actually accomplishing the things on

your list, so don’t get too self-congratulatory – you still have

some work ahead of you.

It can be overwhelming looking at a seemingly never-

ending to-do list. The only way to deal with that sense of

feeling defeated before you even get going, is to start with the

first task that looks the most fun or the easiest for you to

accomplish – what an orchard worker would call "low hanging

fruit." Go for the easy mark first, and get that rewarding sense

of accomplishment, that comes with checking something off

the list, because that sense of accomplishment will get you into

the zone of building on your success and you’ll gain

momentum towards completing more and more of the tasks

you have before you.

By the time you get to the end of the list, you’ll have

accomplished so much, and you’ll be feeling so good about

yourself that those things that looked so hard will be easy to

check off. Use this trick every time you feel overwhelmed: it’s

a tool to help you succeed.

Through the Fresher’s eye… |Siddharth Purohit CE 1 yr.

Fascinated by the stories told by others

about their college life, even I have waited for this

time since my childhood. This wait which seemed like eternity has been so long that it’s no less than

a dream come true to step into an entirely new

phase of my teenage. The very first day, I was so

excited that no other feeling could have laid heavy on me, except for my mother being a little

nostalgic. All my packing was over and with

renewed enthusiasm; I left for my college, GBPEC.

I would not forget when I first saw the college; it looked as if heaven existed on earth.

The cloud cover and the scenic view, I had of my

college is imprinted deep in my memory. The

fresh air instilled in me dreams of making new friends, remaining in the campus, combined

studies and many more. I was totally shaken up

when I heard about the rules. We were not allowed to leave our hostels except for our regular classes.

Faculty, I found them friendly enough and took their words and I saw the real talent in them.

In simple words I had found a new family of

seniors. There were also some seniors for whom I

have no words to express. The experiences have been exaggerated in my soul and wish I had a lot

more to share..

The Steve Story |Nitin Chauhan EE 1yr.

In 1960’s, when the ‘sand’ started entering

each and every household of ‘the valley’, two Steves would start playing with it in such a

manner that would leave an indelible mark on

world history. On one hand, Steve Wozniak would make castles never seen before, and the other-

Steve Jobs, would present them in a viciously

artistic way. They started with the ‘Blue Box’ – an unauthorized device which allowed users to route

their own calls by emulating in-band signalling

mechanisms which then controlled long-distance

dialling systems. Though illegal, yet an example of engineering genius!!

Came 1975, and the other ‘Sand

sculpture” was built – The Apple 1- The first highly successful mass-produces PC, which had a

keyboard and a TV set – way too simple than the contemporaries..

The hawk-eyes of Steve Jobs ushered in

GUI technology from Xerox, which was too ‘elite’ to consider a device called a ‘mouse’. At the

intersection of Humanity and science, Macintosh

was created – the first successful GUI based PC. Followed it a mini PC – the Tablet Apple Newton,

a revolutionary portable media player- the iPod,

unmatched cell phones – the iPhone, and the first

wireless mouse…

Bidding adieu to an enthusiastic faculty

member brings tears to our eyes. Right from the

time he stepped into this college, he has been the

most and perhaps widely admirable among

students. A man who needs no introduction, we

present to you a dynamic faculty member of this

college, Mr. Karthik V, a person from a very

humble background. A few excerpts from the

interview are as follows:

Q. Few words that describe the college?

A. GBPEC, one of the top-most institutions in the

state, nourishes the cream of talent from all over

India. Nested in the soothing balm of Himalayas,

this college boasts of the sophisticated equipments

and experienced faculty. Moreover, this college

has the honour of being jewelled as an

autonomous institution.

Q. What makes this college different from

others?

A. This college is a very geographically beautified

institution. Here students are provided with an

ample opportunity to choose from a variety of

activities, which not only encompasses their

academics, but also provides them to choose from

a multitude of sports and cultural activities..

Talking academically, this college enjoys the

accreditation of UGC and technical funding of

TEQIP.

Q. How would you rate the college?(1 to 10)

A. 5

Q. What improvisations you would like to see

in the college?

A. 1. Lack of sound and healthy environment

makes the quality of students decrease, resulting in

a less-than-average result in the competitive

examinations.

2. Since actions speak louder than words, the

paper oriented plans must assume their physical

form to steer this college to greater heights.

3. This college must be made administratively

strong.

4. Lacking sports facilities which need an

immediate upgradation. Also, the internet and wi-

fi facilities must be made more accessible.

5. The printing, scanning and Xerox facilities must

be properly maintained and accessible.

6. The communication gap between students and

faculty must be bridged.

7. The coordination gap between permanent and

temporary faculty members must be brought to a

low level.

9. Library should be equipped with journals and

research papers, and the students should be

provided with an easy access.

10. The incumbent person in the T&P cell must be

provided a proper coordination from all the

departments to enhance the placements.

11. Regular interaction with reputed institutions

must be enhanced to make technical activities a

regular feature.

Q. How was your stint at GBPEC?

A. During my short stint in this college, I felt

overwhelmed by the serene surroundings, but at

the same time the communication gap at all levels

must dissolve.

Q. Please tell us about your pass-times and

hobbies?

A. Though solitude forms a major part of my pass-

time, but still the times I spend with my colleagues

and friends is the best. My hobbies include

listening to classical and devotional music and

playing badminton.

Q. What are your suggestions for students?

A. 1. Set a goal and achieve without any

compromise.

2. Think twice before you act.

3. Honour your parents.

4. Make your work a skeleton of dedication,

integrity and honesty.

5. Maintain relationships and do not run behind

money.

Q. Tell us something about love?

A. “Love is patient, Love is kind, it does not

enjoy, it does not boast, not proud, not rude, not

self-seeking, not easily angered, it keeps no record

of wrongs. Love does not delight in evils but

rejoices with truth. It always protects, always

trusts, always hopes, always preserves. True love

never fails.”

Q. Your views about the current placement

scenario?

A. Geographical access is a big hindrance for good

companies to visit college. Thus, there is a need to

establish a placement cell in places where

companies can get easier access. Personality

Development programs must be a regular feature.

Healthy relationship with alumni is necessary.

Q. Tell us about your goals and role models?

A. My role model resides in Jesus. My goal is to

join the IAS and work in the area of improvement

of the present education system.

Annual session of the Academy of

Environmental Biology and National Seminal on

“Emerging pollutants and Pathogens:

Challenges and Risk Reduction” held on 20th,

21st, 22

nd September 2012 in Lucknow. This

function was jointly organized by The Academy

for Environmental Biology and CSIR-Indian

Institute for Toxicology Research, Lucknow.

The theme of the discussion in the seminar was

“Impact of Nanomaterial on the aquatic

ecosystem”, in which the team from our college,

which comprised of Dr. Mamta Baunthiyal, Dr.

Harish Chandra and Mr. Sumit Kumar Rai

participated in the Best Poster Presentation

(BPP) Competition.

Our team bagged the 3rd

Prize for the

poster entitled Hydrogels: An emerging

pollutant. It gave a brief account on the ability

of hydrogels to absorb and retain fluids and

bioactive materials. Since these materials are

increasingly used, they are getting accumulated

in the environment.

In this seminar, various colleges like

University of Lucknow, Agra, Kolhapur

(Maharashtra), Jaipur etc. from all over India

participated. Congrats for projecting GBPEC on

the National Scenario!!

Perception is Projection

|Kritika Pandey EE-3Yr.

Why is it that two people watching the

same accident have two totally different

accounts of what just occurred? They both saw

the same accident-yet, they processed two very

different versions.

According to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

in the book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal

Experience, we take in 2 million pieces of

information per second, yet we can only process

134 bits per second. How then do we determine

which 134 bits of information to focus on? We

choose those 134 bits of information based on

our values, beliefs, attitudes, past experiences,

memories and how we process information.

To illustrate this point, let’s have some fun.

• Look around the room you are currently in and

notice all the items in the room that are coloured

white (for some of you this might be easy, for

others you may have to really look carefully for

"White" items).

• Now, close your eyes and try to

remember all the items in the room that were the

colour "black". Notice how challenging this task

is given that I directed you to look for the colour

"white".

• Now, open your eyes and look around

the room and notice how many "black" coloured

items you missed when asked to recall them.

There are just as many "black" items now that

you are noticing them as there was when you

were only searching "white" items. The only

thing that changed was the focus you were

giving to the two different colours.

This is just one example of how

differently two people might see their respective

worlds.

How do you see the world?

• Are you a glass half full person or are you a

glass half empty person?

• What is the first thing you see, hear or feel in

any situation?

• Are you looking for and noticing the positive

side of things or do you gravitate towards the

negatives, the risks and what is wrong with the

situation.

Both scenarios are present – the positive

and the negative-you, the observer, gets to

choose how to interpret the situation.

Oh sure, you have your reasons for

seeing things a certain way. We all have

baggage we carry around with us that affects

how we view the world. To quote Dr. Phil, "how

is that working for you?" If it's working and you

are truly happy in every area of your life, great.

However, if there is any area of your life that

isn’t working, look at how you might change

your perception of the situation so that you are

experiencing the most positive 134 bits out of

the 2 million bits of information available.

Here are 5 steps to help you more

positively focus your attention:

1. Ask yourself… What perspective you are

currently holding as you evaluate a particular

situation?

2. Ask yourself… What other perspectives are

possible that you may not have considered to

this point?

3. Ask yourself… Which perspective would

offer you the best and highest positive potential

for an optimal outcome?

4. Holding the best and highest positive

potential perspective… What are some actions

you could take?

5. Go ahead and take positive action!

Your world is a mirror that reflects back

to you what you are seeing, hearing, feeling and

sensing. Your perception truly is a projection of

what is going on in your inner world. Here’s the

good news-you get to choose how you interpret

any situation. So choose wisely.

Energy v/s Search engines | Rahul Kumar Singh PE-3yr

Typing the word “pizza” into your

favourite search engine may seem harmless enough. But you may not know that, with this

simple act, you’re sending information to

possibly hundreds of machines located possibly thousands of miles from where you sit. Each

machine that search encounters on its journey

uses energy. Because so many people are always

searching at the same time all over the world, that energy can really add up. Most of the

computers people use every day Internet. And

it’s easy to type, click and search to get answers to even the silliest question. We enjoy this

luxury so much that we can forget that each

search does in fact use energy. And making that

energy emits the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Every search requires lots of other

machines to process a lot of information — and to process it in a fraction of a second. Your

search for “pizza” is only one; there are easily

thousands of other people searching at the same moment. In December of 2009, Web users

around the world conducted an estimated 131

billion searches, according to marketing

research firm comScore Inc. “Because you need answers so fast and of such high quality [or

relevance, the amount of data is huge. And since

many people are using the system at the same time, you end up needing a large number of

servers to run it”. A server is a computer

dedicated to storing data — specifically, the information that makes up a particular website

— and making that data available to other

computers that request it. Web sites such as

Google, Yahoo and Bing are called search engines, programs that crawl all over the

Internet to find results.

When you type in some terms and press

“search.” But when you use a search engine, not

only does your computer use energy, but the site

uses thousands of connections to other websites and their servers to come up with all the results

you see. This means that emissions of

greenhouse gases that result from energy use are connected with several different places at once

for just one search. Environmental Protection

Agency estimates that, by 2011 in U.S.A., data centers will use 107 billion kilowatt-hours per

year. That 107 billion kilowatt-hours is almost

double what the data centers used in 2006.

As we see that huge amount of energy is

lost due to random reasons like searching pizza

and all other things. It is more efficient to directly use the website if we know rather than

searching on Google, Bing, Msn, Yahoo etc. We

also know that one person can’t stop data centers from consuming energy, but each of us

can take small steps to conserve energy by

changing our computer habits.

The first step to success

| Deepika Goel ECE 2yr

Courage is victory and confidence spells

success. Be bold, dare and do. It is not the size

of the dog in the fight, but it is the size of the fight in the dog that counts. If you are not afraid,

you can do anything. If you have the courage to

stand up to defeat, spot your opportunity and

turn defeat into victory. One man with courage makes a majority.

Our greatest glory is not in ever falling,

but in rising every time we fall. Defeat may serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let

the glory out. Little minds are tamed and

subdued by misfortune but great minds rise

above it. Meet every adverse circumstance as its master and do not let it master you. Many men

owe the grandeur of their lives to their

tremendous difficulties. Adversity is the prosperity of the great. Kite rises, not with but

against the wind.

Anything that comes too easily is not worth having. When we want success, we must

be ready to pay the price which includes braving

failures and setbacks and persisting with one

effort till the goal. Achieving success demands total effort. One has to resist temptations and

defy distraction. If

we want to get there badly

enough, nothing

can stop us. To dare is

great, but to bear is

greater. Bravery

we share with brutes, fortitude

with saints. If we

never failed, it is an easy guess that we have never known high

Andar Ki Baat

First day, when I came to the college with my parents, the things that I saw in the

college were really indescribable. One of

those things was the Mess. The quality of

the meal was excellent initially. But the real story started at the day when the parents

were gone. I went to mess early in the

morning sharply at 8:10 am, waiting for the ‘stuffed aloo parathas’. I was talking with

my roomie in the mess about our parental

backgrounds and our studies. It was 8:30

and I realized the thing that I was still sitting with my plate empty. I looked

towards my batch-mates who were also

waiting for it. Suddenly a huge crowd ran towards the mess kitchen. Then I realized

that the mess staff came with ‘parathas’ and

without wasting a single moment, I was also the part of that huge mass. Somehow I

was able to get the breakfast and I was off

to the class. After some days, the day came

for which every student was waiting. Our mess committee had decided our menu. We

were looking for the ‘chhole bhature’ and

we were in the mess from 7:30 pm, half an hour before the mess timing. Students were

chattering, murmuring, and were so excited

for the dinner. First round of dinner allotment was over and half of the plates

were still empty. Students were eager for

the food and rest (the lucky ones) were

eating like hogs without even thinking of the ‘poor ones’. Second round came after

10 minutes and some of us were unlucky

again. After a long wait, some of the students entered into the kitchen and mess

staffs were trying to convince them. I found

the right time to leave the mess and the last

words I heard from the mess was ‘KHANA KAHAN HAI…???’

Be the change you want to see |Shiva Makin EE-Final Yr.

Whatever we put our thoughts and efforts towards will grow.

Whatever we think about we become. So what are you placing your

thoughts and efforts towards? As soon as we begin to speak negatively

about anyone, or any situation we are giving our focus and attention to it,

and allowing that negative energy to grow.

Be the change you want to see. We should be watchful of the

words we speak to others, and articles, books, or movies we recommend.

Our greatest gift that we have each been blessed with is our ability to

choose what we think about. If we have negative thoughts plaguing our

minds we have the power to release them, and just let them go. What good

will come about if we harbour negative thoughts about others? What can

you possibly gain from playing the devil's advocate? Thoughts are things

and what we think about we bring about.

Gandhi said it well in just a few words. "Be the change you want

to see in the world". Instead of allowing negative ideas to abound because

you do not like what is happening to you or others, stop! Be the change

you want to see Decide what it is that you want to see happen and take the

action towards it. Keep your thoughts always upward and positive. Uplift

someone else daily, show others a better way to live and think. Show your

goodness for society sake, believe in yourself and others will believe in

you. Believe and you will Succeed!

A valuable advice |Shivam Mittal Civil Final Yr.

Moving on from school to college life is a different experience

altogether. This is a weird phase when you are in school you just want it to

be over and when you are in college the flashbacks from school life always make you travel back into the past. Weird but yeah! This is human nature.

College life is just like a never before experience for almost everybody. I

give you a ‘reset’ button and you can be and whatever you want. All it

needs to be successful after college is proper management of time and resources.

Well you might have already heard enough about balancing your

time and do a whole list of things from someone but believe me, it’s serious crap. I mean according to my experience it’s very difficult to study

other than for the exams (it’s damn true). There’s whole lot of things out

there to explore like sports, chapters, events, competitions, fests, movies

(and you know some other things too which cannot be written here). But yes some people do manage studies with all of these and shine

academically and everywhere else too.

Obviously they have made their sacrifices somewhere down the line .What I am trying to say here is that fun and everything else is really

important at this time of your life but grades(marks) are given a priority

everywhere. This is society and this is how it works. Believe me this time of your life is never going to comeback. People miss their college life so

much that I have seen people crying (literally) when they recount their

times.

So, one has to ensure that while having fun, the marks are taken care of. One of the best ways to achieve this, which has worked for me and

many other friends, is by just listening to the teachers carefully (that’s it!!)

From The Editors’ Desk…

The very first question to every GBPECian… |Navneet Kaushal EE 3yr.

Are we really an engineering student? Just relate yourself to the engineering students of famous colleges. You will find the answer. Now

what is the reason? The reason is very clear that we are not putting efforts for it. The engineering college is not only about spending four years of

your life. The age at which we join the college is the best for our overall development including personality, but what do we do? Sleeping, chatting

and of course class. That’s it. Is it our development?

Wake up guys!!! only four years and there is a lot to do. The only difference between a successful student and a normal student is the way

of thinking. The way to do things differently and cleverly makes a student smart. As you all know, no one can beat us in surviving tactics and one

can say, we are skilled to deal with any delicate situation. But why are we lacking? It’s just because of deficiency of our overall development and

only we are responsible for it. Taking an example an interviewer is just like a buyer of a cell phone, willing for maximum features. So the candidate

with more talent will be preferable for them. So recognize yourself and prepare before the time runs out. Now what is the basic problem? It is that if

“he” is not doing then why “me”? but the solution is only ‘you”. It never matters what others think and do. You are the own creator of what you are

dreaming about. We all know, a single drop of blood can make a bucket of water reddish that is the change comes from a single person. Try to be

different from others in positive way. Try to initiate, involve and then you will definitely see the output. The quote is all about it

“Manzil to mil hi jayegi, bhatak kar hi sahi Gumrah to wo hain jo ghar se nikle hi nahi “

Management is also a necessary thing. Do all other stuffs but keep your study parallel to it. It is not just dreaming about better college. It is

an effort that is needed from every student as well as teacher of the college. If you are not effort to solve the problem, then you are part of problem.

Change yourself the system will automatically change.

A simple thought to end. It will be really critical condition if you are ‘dreamum’ and not ‘wakepum’.
