CONSTRUCTION OF BREASTING DOLPHIN AT DEEP WATER

n an effort for the St. Christopher Air and SeaPorts Authority (SCASPA) to accommodate largercruise ships at the cargo pier in Bird Rock, abreasting dolphin is currently being constructed. The construction of dolphin is part of SCASPA’slong term strategy to further develop and mod-ernize the cargo port.

Seventeen (17) piles will be driven into the seabedto gain compressive strength and provide a plat-form that will extend the shore to provide a dryaccess facility to cruise ships that are larger thanthe current berth at the Cargo Port.

This infrastructure is being designed in such a waythat it will still be used as a breasting dolphinwhen SCASPA develops and expands the Bird Rockpier in the near future to accommodate larger andmore cargo vessels at the same time.

In light of facilitating the completion of the con-struction of the dolphin, the St. Christopher Air

and Sea Ports Authority has solicited the coopera-tion of all mariners by asking them to stay 100 feetaway from the area south of the Deep Water pierwithin the vicinity of the breasting dolphin fromJanuary 18 – 25, 2014.

According to Ludel Harvey, Chief Marine Pilot ofSCASPA, the request is made for the safety of mari-ners:

“During the construction of the dolphin, the drivingin piles into bedrock depths, welding and testing ofpiles, cutting of steel and other work will cause de-bris to fly haphazardly and noise pollution is inevita-ble. For the safety of all vessels and persons operat-ing within the port, all mariners have been askednot to operate within 100 feet of the Deep Waterpier.”

The construction work is smoothly progressing byJay Cashman Inc. and is expected to be completed,February 15th 2014.

FBO NEARS COMPLETION

he new Private Jet Terminal (FBO) at the RobertL. Bradshaw International Airport is nearing comple-tion and should be launched in the first quarter of2014.

Leeward Flight Services (LFS) will operate the state-of-the-art terminal which will provide a number ofservices including the company’s unique YU Loungefor both commercial and private passengers in aworld-class luxury environment arriving or depart-ing the Federation’s international gateway:

“An FBO adds value to the high-end and businesstraffic. As St. Kitts is attracting more high-end hotelslike the Park Hyatt, Kittitian Hill, Christophe Harbourand other upcoming prestigious projects, you willfind more and more business people and businessjets coming in. When these type of jets and passen-gers come in, they expect a different type of serviceand this is what Leeward Flying Services can pro-vide,” said the company’s Chairman, Uday Nayak, adding: “We give them a service that they are ac-custom to back home.”

He said such a service also gives St. Kitts recognitionwhere such a facility is available for high-end trafficto accommodate the big spenders.“It’s the big spenders that generate money into any

economy and so we need them to come to the is-land,” said Mr. Nayak.

He said the private jet terminal will also have officesfor Immigration and Customs:

“We have fibre-optic links installed between ourterminal and the main airport and we are fullywired up. All passengers will go through the normalimmigration and customs processes. The only differ-ence is that the immigration documents will be han-dled by our staff while the passengers will be sittinginstead of standing in line,” said Mr. Nayak.

During the Christmas Season, LFS recruited some 15to 20 ambitious, proactive, dynamic individuals tojoin its team to offer guest satisfaction. These localrecruits were highly trained by specialists, who trainthe staff of Singapore Airlines crew and upscale re-sort chains. RECIPE OF THE MONTHhis month, snack healthily in the office and choose nuts over chips

for a crunchy alternative.

Nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats but are calorically dense (about170 calories per ounce) so measure out an ounce (about 24 al-monds) and stick to that amount instead of feasting on the entirebag. Stash premeasured baggies of nuts in an office drawer or inyour purse to nibble on when the 3 p.m. hunger pains hit. Almondsand other nuts are a naturally high source of vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium and are rich in protein and fiber.
