Dear Friends,

It has been an amazing start to 2013 so far! The second week of January we held the Annual “Best of 2012 Radiation Oncology Symposium” which accrued record breaking attendance. The following week over 400 guests came to the Maryland Proton Treatment Center’s Topping Out Event, which was a huge success! As the department grows, so does the Beam! As you may have realized, the Beam will now only be distributed 3 times a year instead of quarterly. We hope you enjoy this larger edition of the Beam and as always thank you for your endless and tireless dedication.

I can’t possibly distribute this Beam without mentioning the Super Bowl Champions, the Baltimore Ravens!! I would like to leave you with this inspirational quote from Ray Lewis:

Dear Dr. Kwok, I'm not sure exactly who this would get passed on to, but I wanted to write something to commend the entire radiology department. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor this past summer, and had it removed early this fall. What followed was a 6 week course of radiation and chemotherapy, which could've been extremely difficult and a little scary. As it was, I was getting up at 6:30am for treatments, so that I could work a full day afterwards. However, thanks to the excellent staff of nurses and doctors, it was instead an enjoyable experience. The nurses who greeted me every morning were cheerful and conversational, and always checked to make sure I was comfortable and asked me what kind of music would make the process the best. Throughout the process they would check up on me if they were in the room. Even though they were no doubt as tired (or more tired) than I was, they were never grumpy or grouchy. I want to name particular names, but I really can't because of how good the entire staff was. Though I dealt with near a dozen different nurses at different times, they were all equally pleasant and professional. And while this may seem like a minor thing, I was thrilled at how efficient and timely everyone was. I'd grown accustomed to doctors appointments, even at the hospital, taking much more time due to delays and people being late, but this never happened during my treatments, not even once. I could keep listing ways in which the department is excellent, but really all I can say is just how nice everyone was. They turned an experience that could've been scary and unpleasant into one of the easiest parts of this entire process. I cannot thank them enough for their exemplary work ethic, kindness, and just generally excellent demeanor. They really helped me through a difficult time, and I wanted to make sure they were recognized for their excellence. Patient

Dear Extraordinary Team of UMMC Radiation Oncology,

We extend sincere thanks for everything you have done for the Hope Lodge during the Christmas Holiday. Your ongoing generosity enables the Hope Lodge to continue to provide services to cancer patients and their families. Thank you for truly making us a priority in your lives. It is people like you who truly make a difference.

Thoughtfulness is a wonderful thing, and you’ve not only been thoughtful, but continue to find extraordinary ways of expressing it.

The dinner was superb and your wonderful gifts truly made our Christmas morning at Hope Lodge fabulous. We used the box of gifts just recently received as BINGO gifts last week. We were grateful that you made an incredible difference in the lives of those who were unable to go home for the holidays.

True thanks just can’t be put in words, somehow it loses in translation. Thank you so very much for your commitment and dedication in making this a successful event.

MPTC “Topping Out” Ceremony On Thursday, January 17th, the official “Topping Out” ceremony was held to celebrate the placement of the last steel beam at the new $200 million cancer treatment facility. “Topping Out” is a major construction milestone, marking the last beam being laid on the building.

At the ceremony, a giant crane hoisted a nine-foot beam three stories above the street and rested it in place at the top of what will be a 122,000-square-foot facility in the University of Maryland BioPark in West Baltimore. Over 400 invited guests — including construction workers and leadership from all the partner organizations — signed the white beam in a rainbow of colors before it was put in place.

Each color represented a different cancer: i.e., gray for brain cancer, pink for breast cancer, orange for kidney cancer, etc. In keeping with a long-standing tradition of the topping out ceremony, the beam carried with it an evergreen tree and an American flag. The beam also carried a bell, which will be displayed in the center’s lobby upon completion of the building.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Mahatma Ghandi

You were noticed….

You were noticed…is a recognition tool that is used for praising a member of the front desk staff for delivering service excellence. If you want to recognize a member of the front desk, please email the front office supervisor, Carl Benbow, at [email protected] or you can fill out a “You were noticed” form at the front desk.

Susan Huppman was noticed by a patient’s wife. The patient’s wife wanted to thank her for her handling of her husband so thoroughly and with great attention. The patient’s wife stated, “I can honestly say that the visit was uniquely welcoming experience in the midst of much challenge, anxiety, and stress as of late dealing with his health condition. We appreciate the team’s attention and I wanted to personally offer my thanks to you. It was a pleasure to meet you today.”.

Eric, Andrea, and Paris were noticed by Carl for their hard work closing charts. Carl stated that “they truly displayed the meaning of teamwork and they are great examples of what can be accomplished if we work together. The front desk truly values their efforts and hard work. We can accomplish anything if we work as a team and your results prove that. We could not have accomplished our chart close-out goals without you. Great Job!”

Annual White Elephant Exchange They had a great turn out for Downtown Dosimetry Divisions Annual “Holiday Potluck/White Elephant Gift Exchange.” The gift exchange involves each person anonymously bringing a wrapped gift. Numbers were drawn randomly to determine the order in which they could choose their gift. Participants were allowed to open a gift or “steal” a gift from someone else before it has been opened. A gift cannot be stolen more than three times. They shared culturally diverse foods and enjoyed watching the surprises of the gift exchange unfold.

National Technologist’s Week

On November 9th, 2012 the therapy group met at Bond Street Social Club in Fells Point to celebrate Radiation Therapy Week. This week long celebration called attention to the important role the therapists play in patient care.

Their contributions and the care they provide to our patients are a source of pride and inspiration for all. Congratulations to the therapy group on this well deserved recognition.

Special thanks to Rachaele Taylor for organizing this wonderful event.

As National Technologist's Week was celebrated by all imaging professionals throughout the country, the imaging professionals at UMMC celebrated the week by creating educational posters for both patients and other medical staff that displayed some aspects of what they do everyday. This team provides a platform that allows the imaging professionals a forum in which they can voice their opinion and contribute to decisions in regards to safe and effective care of patients.

Most recently, the committee group members participated in Poster Rounds on November 7, 2012. It was a great success and many of the senior leadership members, including Jeff Rivest, stopped by to speak to each of the group members and ask questions about their posters. A special thanks to Jaime Lepage and Rosa Miles for their outstanding efforts on the poster for radiation therapy.

Flu Season

We are in the midst of an early and intense flu season. UMMC has already treated more patients with serious influenza in the first months of the season than in all of last year. We each need to pay close attention to protecting ourselves and our patients, and to making sure visitors do the same.

How much flu have we seen at the Medical Center?

Influenza activity began relatively early in the 2012-2013 season. Since September, UMMC has reported a total of 75 influenza cases. In comparison, we reported a total of 32 cases for the entire flu season last year. In short, this is going to be a heavy – and probably long – flu season.

What can you do to prevent yourself, your loved one s, and your patients from getting sick from the flu?

Vaccination against influenza remains the single most important preventive measure. We are all proud that UMMC employees and Medical Staff have attained very high rates of vaccination this year. If for some reason you have not already done so, it is not too late for you and your family to get vaccinated!

• Offer the flu vaccine to any hospitalized patient who has not received it for the current season

• Screen visitors for any signs of respiratory illness. Do not allow sick visitors to remain in the hospital, and ask them to follow respiratory etiquette while on UMMC premises

What is respiratory etiquette?

Respiratory etiquette includes the following simple measures that we can all follow to prevent respiratory infections from spreading:

• If you are sick, stay at home.

• Turn your head to your shirtsleeve or cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

• Clean your hands often with an alcohol-based hand cleaner or with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Clean hands save lives!

These simple steps will go a long way in keeping yo u and your patients healthy this flu season.

The New Year Means New Tax Rules

Congress recently passed a measure to avert the "fiscal cliff" and we have other tax based legislation that began January 1, 2013.

• The 2013 employee Social Security portion of the FICA withholding tax rate has returned to 6.2% (up from 4.2% from 2012);

• The wage base for the calculation of the Social Security tax has increased from $110,100 to $113,700; and

• The wage base for the Medicare portion of the FICA withholding tax rate has been modified slightly and will increase from 1.45% to 2.35% for all earnings over $200,000.

• Most tax brackets for federal income tax payers will remain as they were in 2012, adjusted for inflation. The only wage earners that will pay a higher % of federal tax will be those earning greater than $400,000 and that increased from 35% to 39.6%.

For more information on taxes and withholding, reference the IRS Publication 15, (Circular E) Employers Tax Guide, on the IRS website.

New Year Maintenance

The IRS Form W-2 will be available/sent to employees no later than January 31, 2013. Please ensure your current paystubs reflect an accurate home address so you receive the mailed document.

As with any new year, please make sure you have looked at all of your retirement contributions, tax withholdings/exemptions and make sure that all of your information is updated.

Girl Scouts Visit Cancer Center

BWMC had a special visit from Girl Scout Troop #2257 from the Arch Bishop Slade School in Glen Burnie. They collected donations of cookies for our cancer patients, and they donated a total of 54 boxes of cookies that were distributed to our patients during the holidays. The patients really appreciated it and we were so honored to be selected by the Girl Scout troop.

Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Our department submitted a pumpkin display in the annual pumpkin decorating contest at BWMC. The theme was “Welcome to Hampden Hon” emphasizing breast cancer awareness. The display took first place and they won a gigantic basket of treats.

27 Acts of Kindness

In honor of the tragedy that occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, our Radiation Therapists participated in a campaign to share 27 acts of kindness to honor the victims. This effort was led by April Holtman , our Assistant Chief Therapist.

Some examples of their kindness were purchasing a cup of coffee for our valet man on a cold day, giving a gift card to a local school crossing guard, sending random Christmas cards to soldiers and buying groceries for an elderly woman, in addition to many other thoughtful acts. BWMC leadership recognized them for their random acts of kindness and published the article in “The Buzz” newsletter on the BWMC website’s homepage.
