Challenges

skin issues go deeper than surface value

True beauty is found in true confidence Taking care of your skin hair and nails wonrsquot just make you look bettermdashyoursquoll feel better too

each day over 14 million Canadians cope with some form of skin hair or nail disorder and each day derma-tologists across the country are working

to improve the quality of life of those Canadians

Today Canada has only 650 derma-tologists to care for almost 34 mil-lion Canadiansmdasha shocking ratio With extensive medical training and unique skills dermatologists can identify intricacies in the skin hair and nails and treat numer-ous conditions These conditions can sometimes mimic one another making diagnosis and management diffi cult for those outside the derma-tology specialty

Weathering the damageCanadarsquos distinct climate can also make for dermatologic diffi culties Conditions such as eczema and psor-iasis can worsen during the cold dry winter because the skin becomes drier and irritated While treat-ment options for both can include immunomodulators antibiotics phototherapy or topical ointments a simple everyday skin care regimen including regular moisturizing will help to ease some of the added win-ter discomfort

Zapping the issueOne of the most common skin care problems seen by dermatologists is acne There are a number of fac-

tors that can lead to acne breakouts such as cosmetics sweating gen-etics medications and hormonal changes It is often assumed being out in the sun will cure acne which is a common misconception The sunrsquos ultraviolet radiation only sup-presses the immune systemrsquos reac-tion to bacteria making the acne appear less red and simply masking the problem while actually damag-ing the skin

In general mild acne can be treat-ed with over-the-counter products whereas dermatologists usually treat moderate to severe stubborn or widespread acne with prescrip-tion medications However wheth-er mild moderate or severe it is important to see a dermatologist because even mild acne can still pot-entially lead to skin discolouration and permanent scarring

Below the surfaceAlthough not often discussed many skin conditions carry psychological side-eff ects or insecurities In truth patients regularly see their skin con-dition as a burden in daily life and identify feelings of embarrassment depression low self-esteem and so-cial withdrawal as stemming from their skin condition Through its vari-ous public awareness campaigns the Canadian Dermatology Association is committed to educating the public about these conditions providing in-formation about treatment options and ultimately aims to eliminate some of the stigma associated with these

conditionsWith the return of the sun and

warm weather on its way the Can-adian Dermatology Association fo-cuses education eff orts on developing healthy sun safety habits Poor sun protection habits can lead to skin can-cer If left untreated melanoma the most serious form of skin cancer can spread to other parts of the body and possibly be fatal Although most skin cancers are not a serious threat to life they are removed by surgery or other treatment methods which can be painful and result in signifi cant dis-fi gurement

While dermatologists advocate for regular use of hats protective cloth-ing and sunscreen to reduce the risk of skin cancer the same steps will also prevent sun damage which manifests as wrinkles age spots or broken blood vessels Photoaging is cumu-lative and happens over years of UV exposure Treatments for photoag-ing include the use of fi llers lasers chemical peels and topical agents but it is best to discuss these op-tions with your dermatologist the skin expert

The largest organ you have is your skin Protect it For more in-formation about sun safety win-ter skin care or to find a derma-tologist visit the CDA website wwwdermatologyca

Work through it

1 Combing clean wet hair with a wide tooth comb is

the most eff ective way of remov-ing loose hair that contributes to tangles

Donrsquot crush

2 Sleeping on curly hair - Use a ldquoscrunchyrdquo to hold your hair

on top of your head in a loose ponytail as it will allow for more surface area to sleep on Your curls will still look fresh and full in the morning

Give it depth

3 Adding the right colour or highlights to fi ner curly hair

will add more texture body and fullness

Rinse it out

4 When shampooing remem-ber that the thicker the hair

the longer you need to rinse in or-der to remove all the shampoo

Celebrity photographer Nigel Barker has laid eyes on many a gorgeous face However he says to be truly good looking one must be authentic

true beauty in a digital age

prOFilE

Nigel Barker

Position panelist ldquoamericarsquos next top Modelrdquo photographer

Celebrity Ambassador-Make-a-Wish Foundation the Do something or-ganization and campaign shooter for Fashion targets Breast cancer

Lives in NYC With his wife and two children

Nigel Barker is a wee bit frustrated with the digital agersquos effect on beautyldquoRetouching has created a completely un-obtainable aestheticrdquo says the beauty guru and judge for TV show ldquoAmericarsquos Next Top Modelrdquo

His book ldquoNigel Barkerrsquos Beauty Equa-tion Revealing a Better and More Beauti-ful Yourdquo delves into the very essence of beauty

ldquoOver the past 1000 years women have been pretty much torturing themselves in the name of beautyrdquo says Barker

And needless to say Barker knows his stuff having spent twenty years in the fashion industrymdashboth in front of the lens as a model and behind it as a photographer He has judged the Miss America Pageant and is currently on the panel on ldquoTyra Bankrsquos Americarsquos Next Top Modelrdquo His book takes aim at breaking down the mis-conceptions of beauty in an industry that he says has set ldquounobtainable aestheticsrdquo through digital photo manipulation

He points to the famous photograph of Farah Fawcett He notes that upon close in-

spection you can see her stretch marksldquoNowadays that photo wouldnrsquot have

gotten out into the mainstreamrdquo says Barker

But to Barker beauty is naturalldquoWersquove gotten to a point now where we

call all these things imperfectionsrdquo he says ldquoI like to think these are the things that make us special and uniquerdquo

Show and tellBarkerrsquos meditation on beauty started quite simply His son Jack decided his father would make the perfect candidate for show-and-tell but when Barker was asked to defi ne ldquowhat is beautyrdquo he was struck by the complexity of the question

ldquoObviously my fi rst answer was lsquowell your mom isrsquordquo he says ldquoI started writ-ing down all the things I used to describe beautyrdquo

He noticed that the traits he favoured when behind the lens were authenticity and spontaneity rather than waist size and skin complexion

ldquoIf you look at fashion as well and the way commercial advertisers have gone yoursquove seen more celebrities on the covers of magazinesrdquo notes Barker

The shift in cover images shows a trend towards people who the general public can relate to

He says a key component in beauty is telling a story

ldquoSure you want to exercise and be healthy but that doesnrsquot mean yoursquore going to be a modelrdquo says the beauty guru ldquoIt really has a lot to do with au-thenticityrdquo

And therein lies the message behind his book

ldquoThe whole point of the book is for people to realize that to be considered really beautiful you need to start with the selfrdquo

Freaks and fashonistasHow often have you seen someone walking the catwalk in an outrageous menagerie of material and gravity-defying hair Barker says the key to confi dence is being comfortable in our own skin

ldquoTherersquore all kinds of freaks and fashionistasrdquo says the beauty guru ldquoDo they look crazy No because theyrsquore totally into itrdquo

He says that having worked both as

a model and a photographer gives him an interesting edge At times when hersquos shooting a photo hersquoll notice the subject is out of their comfort level

ldquoYou have to have your little tricks up your sleevesrdquo says Barker

One trick is to have your own pump up song playing in your head whether yoursquore on the catwalk or the sidewalk

But regardless of where yoursquore strut-ting your stuff be genuine

ldquoIf yoursquore a rocker be a rocker If yoursquore goth be a goth If yoursquore a punk be a punkmdashbut if yoursquore not be your-selfrdquo he says

When all is said and done whether hersquos behind the camera on the judgersquos panel or public speaking Barker is fi ghting for authenticity in the fash-ion industry

ldquoI think thatrsquos what we need to get back tordquo says Barker

Dry hair a dry scalp and dandruff are the result of one or more ele-ments depleting your bodyrsquos natural oils before they can reach your skin and hair Getting back your healthy scalp and hair will likely

mean making a change in your daily cosmetic regimen taking better steps to protect yourself from drying influences and in extreme cases seeking professional help Here are some of the most common causes of dry hair and scalp

Harmful chemicals found in cheap and over-used hair products Harmful cosmetic habits like twenty minutes under the blow dryer and

curling iron Overexposure to harsh weather especially cold winter air A diet lacking in necessary nutrients especially vitamins Also consum-

ing alcoholic beverages of any kind prescription drugs and other drugs Excessive consumption of caffeine can also contribute to cause of scalp issues

An untreated skin condition such as eczema psoriasis or seborrheic

Overwashing and overbrushing can irritate your scalp and dry out the natural oils that keep your hair and scalp feeling soft and moisturized If you wash your hair every day try cutting back to every other day or every two days When you do wash donrsquot vigorously scrub or scratch your scalpmdashjust rub in gentle circles with the tips of your fingers Choose a brush with a cushion back made with metal bristles The metal bristles help to keep the proper ionic charge avoid-ing static and damage You can also use your fingers to comb through your hair Brushing too hard and too often can irritate your scalp and increase the dry static-y feeling in your hair especially with brushes with plastic bristles

Choose a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically to treat dry hair and scalp conditions Look for a formula designed to treat scalp and hair or try a product exclusively aimed at dry hair and scalp Look for natural ingredi-ents like Bergamotto and important minerals such as zinc or selenium How-ever avoid coal-tarmdashit can dry hair Also salicylic acid (BHA) is very effective at calming the scalp skin and aids in exfoliation of dead skin cells Exfoliation is among the most important aspect of healthy skin This is true not only for skin care but also for scalp care A healthy scalp is the source of healthy hair Switch-ing to a salon-grade shampoo and conditioner can also help your dry hair and scalp These products are more expensive but also contain less ldquofillerrdquo ingredi-ents yoursquoll also be able to ask a cosmetologist for help finding the right prod-uct for your skin and hair

Donrsquot use high heat treatments on your dry hair and scalp Blow-drying your hair styling with curling and flat irons and washing with hot water all con-tribute to your dry hair and scalp If these treatments are part of your daily regimen chances are theyrsquore to blame for your dry hair and scalp Towel or air-dry your hair Wash and rinse your hair in lukewarm water And if you must use a curling or flat iron apply an extra moisturizing product to your hair be-fore andor after use

Keep your head covered in extreme weather conditions Extreme heat and cold dry air strong sunshine and high winds can all dry out and damage your scalp and hair just like any other exposed part of your body Wear a hat or hood to keep out cold and wind rub sunscreen into any exposed part of your scalp on sunny days and moisturize your scalp and hair before spending long per-iods of time outside in harsh weather conditions

the top fi xes for your skin conundrums

How we look affects how we feel and is deeply intertwined with our sense of self-esteem

When your once-taut poreless and glowing skin turns lined and sag-gy it can be distressing Common skin diseases like psoriasis and ec-zema also make people feel insecure about their looks explains Dr Katie Rodan and Dr Kathy Fields the re-nown creators of Proactive Acne Treatment ldquoSeeking a cure to your skin concerns is not vanity itrsquos self esteem The good news is there are safe eff ective treatments available from topical solutions to non-sur-gical cosmetic treatments that will create a signifi cant improvement in your skinrdquo

Wrinkles The causes The natural aging

process facial movements smoking and regular sun exposure

Doctorrsquos orders ldquoThese treat-ments are eff ective on their own and together they do beautiful thingsrdquo says Fields

Retin-A a prescription-only Vita-min A topical cream is ldquoAnti-wrin-kle anti-pore anti-brown spots anti-acnemdasheverything you would wantrdquo says Fields

Over the counter Retinol was re-cently reported to increase skinrsquos collagen production by the New England Journal Of Medicine

Alpha hydroxy acids to act as skin brighteners by taking off dead skin cells giving it a smoother and re-freshed appearance

Botox injections prevent muscle contractions which relax furrows on the brow and crows feet around the eyes

Temporary Injectable fi llers like Restylane Juvederm and Sculp-tra used to soften deep lines and re-store fullness Rodan steers clear of permanent fi llers ldquoThe face is con-stantly changing and what looks good today might not in a few yearsrdquo

Thermage is a procedure using heat to stimulate collagen growth

which tightens loose skin and wrinkles

Age spots unevenpigmentation and discolouration

The causes The fi rst signs of sun damage

Doctorrsquos orders Hydroquin-one is a safe bleaching agent Bright-ening agents like bareberry and lic-orice extracts help fade spots ldquoRe-moving brown spots from your face chest and hands takes 10 to 20 years off how you lookrdquo says Fields

Dry skin The causes ldquoAging genetics

low humidity cold and wind chron-ic diseases like diabetes and kid-ney disease some medications that lower cholesterol all make your skin dryrdquo explains dermatologist Dr Sandy Skotnicki-Grant

Doctorrsquos orders Fragrance-free botanical-free products non-

foaming facial cleansers moistur-izers with ceramides humectants and alpha-hydroxy acidsmdashall help support the skinrsquos protective bar-rier according to Skotnicki-Grant A humidifi er in your room is helpful Topical steroids are used for serious cases

Eczema The causes ldquoEczema infl amma-

tion means skin is lacking ceramides a natural lipid found in the skin that holds surface skin cells togetherrdquo says Skotnicki-Grant ldquoIn addition all of the anti-aging products wersquore using with great zealmdashretinoids alpha hyr-droxy acids and skin peelsmdashover-whelm the skinrsquos protective barrier It simply breaks down and gives uprdquo

Doctorrsquos orders Moisturizers with skin soothing ceramide lipids and dimethecone to provide a skin barrier Use fragrance-free products

Psoriasis The causes A skin condition

where the skin cells grow too quickly ldquoInstead of 30 days natural cell turn-over it does it in three daysrdquo explains Fields

Doctorrsquos orders ldquoTopical ster-oids Vitamin D and light therapy as the disease becomes more disturb-ingrdquo says Fields

the hottest looks for your locks

Curls can be a bit of a pain sometimesmdashtherersquos no deny-ing it But an endless slew of hair salons are offering the latest hair care fadmdashstraigh-tening and smoothing solu-tions

Of course beauty comes at a cost according to a recent advisory re-leased by Health Canada about Bra-zilian hair smoothing products and the high formaldehyde content they might contain

But itrsquos not all bad news The study has carved a niche market for vegan (non-formaldehyde and non-kera-tin) smoothers

These products based on heat-activated vegan proteins from wheat corn and oats off er non-toxic treatments to eliminate frizz and achieve the same eff ects as trad-itional hair smoothers containing formaldehyde

Bad hair dayIn December Health Canada re-leased a statement advising the pub-lic that several professional hair smoothing and straightening prod-ucts have been found to contain lev-els of formaldehyde above the 0 2 percent limit set by Health Canada

Cyrus Bulsara president of Profes-sional Consultants and Resources a leading strategic consulting com-pany in the salon industry cautions against the use of these products

ldquoAll Brazilian straightening and Keratin treatments also called BKT treatments that have above 02 per-cent formaldehydemethylene gly-col are very dangerous to use per the

US FDA and OSHA regulationsrdquo says Bulsara

Often keratinmdashan organic com-pound occurring in hair skin teeth and nailsmdashbecomes dry and brittle over time When this happens hair can take on a frizzy look

Recently professional hair salons have begun off ering treatments that bind damaged keratin with products including keratin to help straighten and add shine

The downside is that these prod-ucts also contain formaldehyde a known irritant sensitizer and car-cinogen linked to cancer in humans when inhaled chronically as a pre-servative

ldquoThey have been banned in many countries of the worldrdquo says Bulsara ldquoMany of these are potentially can-cer causingrdquo

Bulsara also notes that despite the extensive training salons must undergo to utilize the treatment the products in some cases react poorly with the customers

ldquoThey also result in major dam-age to the hair making it dry brittle and even cause it to break and fall re-sulting in major hair loss if not ap-plied properlyrdquo says Bulsara

Salons are required to have proper ventilation to ensure both the hair care professional and the customer donrsquot inhale harmful fumes

As part of the process the hair is shampooed then partially dried Next the stylist applies a strength-ening product section by section After that the hair is dried and fl at-ironed

Challenges

skin issues go deeper than surface value

When your once-taut poreless and glowing skin turns lined and sag-gy it can be distressing Common skin diseases like psoriasis and ec-zema also make people feel insecure about their looks explains Dr Katie Rodan and Dr Kathy Fields the re-nown creators of Proactive Acne Treatment ldquoSeeking a cure to your skin concerns is not vanity itrsquos self esteem The good news is there are safe eff ective treatments available from topical solutions to non-sur-gical cosmetic treatments that will create a signifi cant improvement in your skinrdquo

the hottest looks for your locks

He points to the famous photograph of Farah Fawcett He notes that upon close in-

Doctorrsquos orders Moisturizers with skin soothing ceramide lipids and dimethecone to provide a skin barrier Use fragrance-free products

Psoriasis The causes A skin condition

the hottest looks for your locks

As part of the process the hair is shampooed then partially dried Next the stylist applies a strength-ening product section by section After that the hair is dried and fl at-ironed

mean making a change in your daily cosmetic regimen taking better steps to protect yourself from drying influences and in extreme cases seeking professional help Here are some of the most common causes of dry hair and scalp

According to Health Canada itrsquos

during the fl at-ironing stage when the formaldehyde is aerosolized that it can cause the most damage

In order to avoid the controversy surrounding the products some sal-ons have looked to organic options

Organic alternativesZerran International a hair care products manufacturer is hoping to capitalize on the recent kickback in toxic products by off ering a veg-an hair smoothing system it calls RealLisse The product boasts that it doesnrsquot contain ldquoformaldehyde aldehydes thioglycolates sodium hydroxide guanidine hydroxide methylene glycol formol formalin ethers or any other substance that produces formaldehyde gas upon

heating with a fl atironrdquo ndash which is one of the chief concerns with using formaldehyde

The product still utilizes a simi-lar system to Brazilian Keratin treat-ments but takes less time

In light of some of the controversy surrounding their products Marcia Teixeira Peter Coppolla Salons and Brazillian Blowout have also begun offering non-toxic keratin treat-ments

Another alternative is Bio Ionic The product avoids formaldehyde and ether but uses keratin henna and perm solution to temporarily relax the curl

For the recordHealth Canadarsquos list of toxic prod-

ucts include both standard and Ad-vanced Brazilian Keratin Treatment and Chocolate Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment by Marcia Teixeira Kera-tin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola

Global Keratin Taming System Strawberry Global Keratin Taming System with Juvexin Strawberry Resistant and the Global Keratin Taming System with Juvexin Straw-berry Light Wave Pro-Collagen RX Keratin Treatment IStraight Kera-tin (Advanced Keratin Treatment) by IBS Beauty and the Brazilian Ther-mal Reconstruction by Cadiveu
