A-LEVELSA-Levels are academic, examination-based qualifications recognised as a traditional qualification to gain entry to universities and higher education. A-Levels focus mainly on academic subjects and qualify for UCAS points (maximum 140 points per A-Level).

CERTIFICATES & DIPLOMASCertificates and diplomas are equivalent to A-Levels but are assessed through coursework rather than examinations. Certificates and diplomas enable you to go on to university, a Higher Apprenticeship or employment. The Bedford Sixth Form currently offers certificate and diploma courses that are either 60 credits (equivalent to one A-Level) or 120 credits (equivalent to two A-Levels).

YOUR CHOICES AT THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM● Typically you study here for two years ● In your first year you have the opportunity to take a combination of four A-Levels and/or certificates and diplomas● If you take A-Levels you will sit an AS examination at the end of your first year. This will help you to decide which subjects to continue with in your second year● Typically you will continue with three subjects in your second year

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSOur Art and Design studios are truly inspiring spaces. You will take part in a number of external events including gallery trips to The Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery, V&A and the Barbican. There may also be an opportunity to visit a European city. In 2014, for instance, our students spent a few days in Barcelona, sketching and photographing the city’s incredible architecture. Extracurricular life drawing classes may be available and you will have access to the latest printmaking facilities, Adobe products, scanners and photography equipment.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDDid you know that the UK’s creative industries are worth more than £36 billion a year and employ 1.5 million people across the country?1 A wide range of degree courses can provide you with the perfect step up to a career in the arts, including fine art, architecture, interior design, graphic design, fashion and surface pattern design, painting and printing, as well as a number of combined courses. Photography is an ever expanding medium and is employed in many contexts, including fashion, advertising, journalism, medicine, science and art and design. SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSYour learning will come to life during visits to working businesses to see how things work in real life industries. We also invite local business people to give inspiring talks about their own individual journeys and area of expertise.

If you study Economics, you will have the opportunity to travel to London to attend conferences and hear views from the UK’s leading economists; a great way to stay up to date with current affairs and issues.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDStudying Business and Economics opens up a wide range of further study and career options. You could go on to study a related subject at university, such as Business, Marketing or Finance, or use the analytical and problem-solving skills you will have acquired to study a different area.

A large part of the business sector is consultancy; helping businesses to solve problems and enhance performance across finance, IT, human resources and planning, to name a few. The UK consulting industry is worth around £8.5 billion and employs more than 80,000 people.1 The finance sector is bigger still, employing two million people, which is around 7% of all UK employment.2 Future careers could include becoming an economist or a marketing executive. I love the freedom that Art & Design gives me to explore and experiment, and in the second year I was given my own desk and wall space in the studio. I also have frequent one-to-one tutorials both formal – focused on what you need to improve and progress in terms of school work – but also informally, I know my teacher is always there to help me on a day-to-day basis.

I’ve been on some exciting trips which have brought art history to life and inspired some of the work I’ve produced back in the studio. Last year I went to Barcelona and saw a lot of Gaudi’s work, including visiting the infamous Sagrada Familia. This year there was the option to go to Paris and I’ve been to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Tate Modern in London. In fact, whilst at the Tate Modern, I was inspired by a Tracey Emin piece and it influenced my final exam piece that I had to complete in timed conditions.

The Bedford Sixth Form was good at supporting me with my UCAS application. I was encouraged to start preparing before the summer holidays and, even though the UCAS deadline wasn’t until January, the Sixth Form had an earlier deadline of October. This ensured there was enough time for my application to be reviewed by teachers and it was submitted to UCAS early. It also meant that I received decisions from universities before some students had finished applying.

I’m delighted that I’ve been offered a place at Loughborough University to study Textiles Innovation & Design. I definitely feel more prepared for my next steps after studying A-Levels here at The Bedford Sixth Form.


OLIVER’S STORY Studying: A-Level Economics, Maths and History

Economics

What I found particularly fascinating about A-Level Economics was learning about development, in the second year of the course. I learnt about global inequality: how some countries are poor and others are rich, how this is measured and how individual country’s policies can affect this. I’ve found it fascinating and it’s definitely an area I want to explore in more detail.

I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge and being at a university that offers me opportunities to learn from global experts. My aim is to be able to take this knowledge forward into a career, perhaps working for The World Bank and giving advice to people in developing countries, to help bring change to their lives, particularly those people stuck in poverty.

I was older than the average student when I started my A-Levels, as I had to retake my GCSEs, so The Bedford Sixth Form was a natural choice for me as it provided a supportive learning environment and focused on achieving good results. I do not regret it because most of my teachers have been very good. In fact it’s a direct result of their support that I’m now going to study at the University of York. I would not have applied without my teachers’ belief in me.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSVisits to the theatre are an integral part of the English courses, where you will watch adaptations of works that you are studying. Trips are also arranged to the British Library to ensure that you get hold of all the resources you need for your learning. The department has recently invited lecturers from the University of Bedfordshire to talk to students on topics including modern and contemporary literature.

Through the study of English you will develop skills of analysis, interpretation, communication and argument, which are integral to careers in law, teaching, journalism, publishing, public relations, sales and marketing and others. When I came to the Open Day at The Bedford Sixth Form the teachers were very friendly and offered a lot of advice about which subjects would be suitable for me and my future aspirations.

I enjoy English Literature and my current topic is ‘The Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature’. I’m currently reading the drama texts Educating Rita and Top Girl in addition to analysing the prose text The Colour Purple. I’ve been encouraged to undertake wider reading outside of the classroom and link it to what I’m reading in class. I have been on trips related to what I’m studying, for example my class went to the Northampton Derngate Theatre to watch an adaptation of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’ which is about a character who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome.

In my experience, the teachers at The Bedford Sixth Form are very approachable and there is a mutual respect between students and teachers – they trust you to get on with the work. My personal tutor is great and I can book a meeting when I need to discuss something with her. I’m looking forward to coming back next year to continue with my studies and to apply for a course at university.

I love learning about the brain, human behaviour and the different fields of Psychology including cognitive, biological, social and developmental; they are all very interesting and relevant to our everyday lives. What I like most about the course is the way that it’s taught – the teachers are very passionate and they specialise in Psychology. When I was choosing where to study my A-Levels, I wanted to be taught by subject specialists, which is what The Bedford Sixth Form offers for all of its courses.

The facilities and equipment are very good and help make the learning experience better than at school. I regularly borrow a netbook from the library which I can use to take notes in class or finish coursework in the Grand Hall. I save all my work on to a memory stick so I can bring it home to finish off. I also find the virtual learning environment, Moodle helpful as I can access all my class notes and homework remotely.

I am going to university in September to continue studying Psychology – I love the subject and I want to learn more and eventually become a Clinical Psychologist. I’m looking forward to starting my degree in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSYou will have a lot of opportunities to get out of the classroom, including attending conferences, listening to guest speakers and visiting museums and parliament. If you study Law, you will hear from the crown prosecution service and lawyers who specialise in criminal defence. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in a mock trial and visit the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham, as well as the Old Bailey. We hold membership of the Historical Association, so, if you study History, you will have plenty of opportunities to attend talks given by visiting historians.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDHaving one or more A-Levels in a Humanities or Social Sciences subject will provide you with skills that are valued by both universities and employers, including investigation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, communication and debate. MEDIA, COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSAs a Maths student you will have plenty of opportunities to bring your learning to life and discuss various issues with experts in the subject. In the lead up to exams, we often hold revision sessions hosted by guest lecturers. This is great for focusing your learning and enabling you to look at things from a different point of view. You also get to visit the Open University for a special Maths lecture, adding breadth to the course content.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDAn A-Level in Mathematics is highly regarded by both universities and potential employers, as it shows an interest in logic, problem solving and looking at situations sometimes in an abstract way. Mathematics at A-Level can lead to work as a climatologist, statistician, analyst, financial advisor, or games programmer. You can also pursue further study on Business and Economics degree courses. However, a Maths degree in itself is a great investment; graduates can earn £220,000 more on average over their lifetime than someone with just two A-Levels. The equivalent average for a graduate of any degree is £129,000.1 Future careers could include becoming an actuary forecasting long-term financial probability and risk. SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSGuest speakers are often invited to give valuable input across a range of courses, and various trips are organised to places of cultural interest. In 2014 the director, Paul Brown came in to talk to our Film Studies students. The students also entered a short film competition with the British Film Institute and visited the Institute’s library in London.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDSuccessful completion of these courses will open up opportunities to study a number of university degree programmes, such as English, Sociology, Philosophy, Media and Humanities, as well as Film, Television or Media Studies (Film Studies).

NATURAL SCIENCES

PERFORMING ARTS

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSYou will take part in a range of external visits to support the course and gain practical experience out in the field. Various trips to sites of interest help to enhance your learning experience. In the past these have included trips to local geological sites, such as quarries in east Bedfordshire, chalk quarries on Dunstable Downs, or Ice Age deposits in the Great Ouse valley. If you study Geology, for instance, you will carry out a field investigation and collect specimens for later lab analysis, such as rock testing and identification.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDFrom these A-Levels, you could progress on to studying a degree in a related subject, such as Geography, Town Planning, or an Earth Science or Environmental Management course. An A-Level in Geography, in particular, is considered favourably

by university admission tutors for a range of degree courses, because it includes elements of the physical and the social sciences, and geographers have to develop the ability to synthesise information from a wide variety of sources and disciplines.

If you want to pursue Geology at university, or in combination with other sciences, some offer courses in Palaeontology, Geophysics or Earth Sciences. There are many jobs in environmental survey and management, such as those with the Environment Agency, and geologists are often employed by mineral, mining and oil companies. ADAM’S STORY Studying: A-Level Geology, Geography and Biology

BSc Geology

I wanted to study Geology at A-Level and The Bedford Sixth Form is one of the only schools in this area to offer the subject. When I came to an Open Day, I had a positive feeling about it offering a mature learning environment and I felt that I would be fully supported to achieve my best.

I have enjoyed Geology since I was 14 and ultimately, I want to become a petroleum geologist, someone who locates oil within the earth and plans for its removal. I like the fact that this career path involves a lot of travel as well as mixing Geology with Business. A-Level Geology is directly related to this career path and it put me at an advantage. I’m now looking forward to going to the University of Leicester to study BSc Geology.

My Geology teacher has an astounding amount of specialist knowledge and he manages to teach it in a way that’s easily understood. I like the small class sizes and we get a lot of one-to-one support. I’ve been on some interesting coursework trips to local rock exposures in Biddenham and Potton where I took samples and measurements so I could determine how they were formed and under what

conditions.

Chemistry is one of my favourite subjects and The Bedford Sixth Form has plenty of up-to-date chemistry equipment that we use to conduct experiments in class. I particularly like the analytical and problem-solving aspects of the subject, understanding concepts and practically applying them rather than just learning facts. In addition, there are the practical elements, such as conducting experiments, analysing data and presenting results which I enjoy.

The teachers have been very supportive. There is always someone I can talk to and they offered a lot of help when I was completing my UCAS application. They ran lunchtime sessions where students could drop in and speak to someone and get advice about what things should be included in the personal statement section of the application form.

I was on the Student Council last year, which meant that I discussed issues on behalf of students relating to our courses and extra-curricular activities. It was a chance to represent students and speak directly to the teaching staff and I felt that they did care about our opinions.

I’m now looking to take a gap year and then go on to university and study a Science degree. London would be a great city to study and live in, but it’s very expensive!

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSAs a Science student, you will be kept busy with a range of trips to places such as the British Science Museum, National History Museum and external planned lectures, as well as plenty of opportunities for practical investigations.

UNIVERSITY AND BEYONDScience A-Levels are required as entrance for most Medicine and Veterinary courses, but there are many other Science degree courses and jobs that you can progress on to. Studying these A-Levels does not restrict you to a life in the world of Science. For example, a Physics qualification equips you with problem-solving, Maths and analytical skills, and employers are always looking for numerate employees. The salaries of Physics graduates are also well above the national average. Over a

working lifetime, the average Physics graduate earns 30% more than someone holding just A-levels; whereas graduates in all subjects on average earn 23% more than non-graduates.1 Future careers could include becoming a zoologist or a forensic scientist. SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTSYou will be given the opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting activities and achieve recognised sporting leadership qualifications, such as The Rugby Football Union Rugby Leaders Level 1 Award if you study on the Sport Diploma. Past enrichment activities that have specifically complemented our Sports and Physical Education courses include the Inter-college rugby 7s tournament, 5-a-side football tournament and Bedford mixed netball tournament.

In lessons, you will regularly have a chance to participate in football, dodgeball, badminton, netball, handball and fitness sessions, as well as the chance to coach fellow students.

Trip: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, Royal & Derngate Northampton

Course: English Literature

English Literature students studying the theme of ‘The Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature’ went to see the play ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’. Seeing the play enabled students to compare it to the text and explore how it presents the struggle with a psychological development disorder. Students were encouraged in their exam to make comparisons to texts they have studied that look at ‘struggles’ of different kinds.

Trip: 65th Berlin International Film Festival Course: Film Studies

This exciting trip included visits to the Berlin Film Museum where students were able to consolidate their studies and see the actual sets, costumes and script notes from such German Expressionist classics as ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ and ‘Metropolis’. They also enjoyed amazing views of the city at the top of Berlin TV Tower. To top off the trip, students experienced the ‘red carpet’ treatment at the opening weekend of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

Trip: Sanger Institute, CambridgeCourse: Biology

The Sanger Institute in Cambridge focuses on scientific research to understand the role of genetics in health. The Institute was a leader in the Human Genome Project which sequenced all of the chromosomes of a human being. When our Biology students visited the Institute, they had a tour of the labs, were given an overview of some of the techniques used to sequence DNA and met with a scientist who works on the genome of zebra fish.

Everyone has different needs when it comes to support and guidance. At The Bedford Sixth Form our team of Student Services advisers give you the support you need, when you need it.

PERSONAL TUTOR

You will be assigned a professionally trained personal tutor when you start your course who will give you one-on-one support throughout your time with us. You will also meet your tutor regularly, together with the other students in your tutor group, to keep you informed of everything going on at The Bedford Sixth Form or to work on group projects, such as career planning.

UCAS JOURNEY

We have a dedicated team and comprehensive programme in place to support you through the UCAS application process. We encourage you to start preparing your UCAS applications early so it is with teachers by late October to be reviewed and checked. We also run lunchtime sessions throughout the UCAS application period, where you can drop in and get advice about the whole process.

CAREERS ADVICE

Throughout your time with us, our careers advisers are here to help you find the right path, providing impartial advice and guidance on everything from your university choices or training and work prospects to CVs and interview preparation.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Our student finance team are there to provide you with practical advice on student bursaries, travel costs, higher education funding, grants and much more. We also have a range of financial support packages available to help with essential costs, such as equipment, books, clothing or meals, as well as bursaries for vulnerable students or those in severe financial hardship.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

If you have an identified learning difficulty and/or disability you may be entitled to additional support. This could include: help in and outside of class; the loan of specialist equipment you may need to complete work; support with making special arrangements for taking exams; support in accessing our facilities.

PERSONAL COUNSELLORS

Our counsellors are available to help if personal difficulties are getting in the way of your studies. We provide quiet spaces where you can talk through your problems with a counsellor, and work towards making them easier to handle.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

We take the wellbeing and safety of every single student very seriously. We strive to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at The Bedford Sixth Form, and have safeguarding and anti-bullying policies in place to ensure that young people and vulnerable adults studying with us do so in a safe and secure environment. If you have any concerns about these issues, our trained staff are here to help.

TUITION AND EXAM FEES

If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2016 and a British or European Union resident, the tuition and exam registration fees for your course are FREE. If you are aged 19-23 on 31 August 2016, you will normally have to pay a fee for your full Level 3 course. In 2015 it was £2,085 per year. Fee waivers may be available depending on the qualifications you already hold or if you are in receipt of certain means-tested benefits. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are available to help support students aged 24 or above with the cost of tuition for Level 3 courses.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Depending on the courses you choose to study, there may be extra costs you have to pay on top of any tuition and exam fees. There will be a £60 charge for day trips, visits and external speakers which will be collected at enrolment.

Vulnerable Learner Bursary

HOW MANY STUDENTS PROGRESS ON TO UNIVERSITY?

In 2014 98% of our pupils went on to further study and/or work and 92% of our A-Level students progressed on to degree level study at some of the top universities in the country, including Russell Group institutions such as Queen Mary, University of London and the University of York.

HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT MY SON/DAUGHTER IN THEIR APPLICATION TO UNIVERSITY?

We offer full support with UCAS applications and, as always, our support teams are available to assist with any concerns or problems students may encounter in moving on to higher education. We also make sure there are plenty of opportunities for students to enhance the personal statement section of their UCAS application, through clubs and activities, for example.

WILL MY SON/DAUGHTER HAVE TO PAY ANY COSTS FOR STUDYING AT THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM?

If they are aged 16-18 our courses are free for them to study. They will be required to buy course related textbooks and, for a few courses, clothing, specialist equipment and pay towards trips and visits.
