SOMAIYA POLYTECHNIC The Beginning…………… On 7 th September 1959 the Somaiya Vidhyavihar was founded to achieve the educational objectives of the Somaiya Trust. The principal objective is to provide Education that will develop an integrated personality as expressed by the first President of Vidyavihar Trust Late Justice N. H. Bhagwati. Over last five decades the Society has diversified into multi directions of disciplines viz. Vidyavihar, Tantrvihar, Ayurvihar, Sanskritivihar. The campus is today humming with nearly 27,000 students and over 1700 faculty members. The Somaiya Vidyavihar 60 acre campus abounds with schools and other institutions preparing future engineers, professionals, technicians. Doctors, teachers, executive and so on. This very area viz. Kirol Village has been transformed into a Centre of Learning, Viz. ‘Vidyavihar’. The very name was also appropriately given to the railway station by the authorities in September 1961 after the emerging of this educational centre. Behind all this shining development, has been the inspiration and the guiding spirit of Late Suchisriman Karamshibhai J. Somaiya. He remained as active as ever in implementation of new projects and institutions to provide both value based education as well as work/job oriented training-for young men and women and succeeded in achieving this objectives. The Beginning……………

On 7th September 1959 the Somaiya Vidhyavihar was founded to achieve the educational

objectives of the Somaiya Trust. The principal objective is to provide Education that will

develop an integrated personality as expressed by the first President of Vidyavihar Trust Late

Justice N. H. Bhagwati. Over last five decades the Society has diversified into multi directions

of disciplines viz. Vidyavihar, Tantrvihar, Ayurvihar, Sanskritivihar. The campus is today

humming with nearly 27,000 students and over 1700 faculty members. The Somaiya Vidyavihar

60 acre campus abounds with schools and other institutions preparing future engineers,

professionals, technicians. Doctors, teachers, executive and so on.

This very area viz. Kirol Village has been transformed into a Centre of Learning, Viz.

‘Vidyavihar’. The very name was also appropriately given to the railway station by the

authorities in September 1961 after the emerging of this educational centre.

Behind all this shining development, has been the inspiration and the guiding spirit of Late

Suchisriman Karamshibhai J. Somaiya. He remained as active as ever in implementation of new

projects and institutions to provide both value based education as well as work/job oriented

training-for young men and women and succeeded in achieving this objectives. His appealing

message in line with karamayog from Shirmad Bhagvad Gita is as follows.

“Remember nothing was ever achieved without Hardwork. Be bold but be not bowled over. Let

Truth and Duty be your watchwords. Never despair in the face of set backs. Keep courage and

continue to work with fortitude. Have faith in yourselves and in the Almighty. Strive for your

Goals and the future is yours.”

The K. J. Somaiya Poytechnic was founded in August 1963. It started Diploma Programmes in

Mechanical, Electrical & Civil Engineering with total annual intake of 120 students which was

enhanced to 180 in June 1966. Under continuing education programme for employed persons,

Part-time Diploma programmes were introduced in October1982 in Mechanical & Electrical

Engineering with an intake of 60 & 40 students respectively. Under the World Bank Assistance Project, Government of Maharashtra granted permission to start a Diploma Programme in

Industrial Electronics with an intake of 30 students from June 1994, as there was a demand from employed persons Part time Diploma in Industrial Electronics was also introduced in 2001.

All Diploma programmes conducted by the Polytechnic have equivalence of MSBTE. All Full

time Diploma programmes have been accredited by NBA-AICTE. Diploma in Civil, Electrical,

Mechanical Engineering has been accredited for 5 years and Industrial Electronics for 3 years.

This is the first Polytechnic in Mumbai region where three diploma programmes have 5 year

accreditation.

The polytechnic has well established laboratories, well equipped workshop, Library, Upto-date

computer section, modern techning aids and audio – visual equipments to impart knowledge and

skills to its students, in the best possible manner. The six- storeyed hostel attached to the

Polytechnic can accommodate about 231 male students and 50 female students.

THE MANAGEMENT The Polytechnic is managed by a Governing Body chaired by Shri. S.S. Somaiya, President,

other members of Governing body one nominated by the trust, members representing Govt. of India, Directorate of Technical Education Maharashtra State , Maharashtra State Board of

Technical Education and nominees of A.I.C.T.E. and the Principal.

AUTONOMOUS STATUS

The Polytechnic was awarded Academic Autonomy commencing from the academic year

1994-95 by the Govt. of Maharashtra, vide circular No. WBP/1093/(2640)(69)/TE2 dated

13-01-1994 in recognition of consistent high degree of academic achievements, high

standards and reputation maintained by the polytechnic in the field of education.

Accordingly our FULL-TIME and PART-TIME Diploma programmes have the academic freedom that will empower the polytechnic to experiment, innovate, design and develop its

own curriculum; in order to keep pace with industry and technology development, by involving people form industry conduct examinations, declare results and award diplomas.

Under Autonomous, semester pattern is followed in order to allow flexibility to maximum

possible extent.

During the progress the programme were monitored by NITTTR Bhopal”, M.S.B.T.E. and

World Bank authorities. Equivalence for our Diploma Programmes is granted by M.S.B.T.E.

Mumbai -400 051.

7 INSTITUTE INFORMATION

With the endorsement of the accreditation, the diplomas awarded by our institute have

recognition & Value all over India & outside India.

GROUP OF COURSES

1. Science & Humanities Group – Courses belonging to language, Science and other

Humanities.

2. Basic Group – Courses which are basic to the Diploma Programme.

3. Core Group – Courses which are application oriented specific to the Programme.

4. Advanced Group- Courses which deal with advanced application belonging to this

group.

5. Management Group – All Management and soft skill related courses belongs to this

group.

The Students also has to register for one non-credit courses per term for his over

all development.

CREDIT POINTS In addition to the MARKS each course is allotted a certain CREDIT –POINT, indicating the number of hours of study per week (including lectures, practicals, tutorials, etc) a student has to

undergo. If a course is a allotted five credit- points, it means that each student, has undergone five clock

hours of study of that courses in every week of the semester. On passing the theory, practical, oral, term work examinations in that course, a student earns five credit points. For securing a

Diploma, a student has to thus earn 180 “CREDIT POINTS”

The autonomy also allows “multi-point entry” system i.e. a student can be permitted to enter a

programme at a higher semester (according to his academic background) and complete the Diploma in lesser time. In this case a student starts with some credit points in balance and rest

credits are earned subsequently.

AWARD OF CLASS System of marks will continue and the ‘CLASS’ will be awarded at the completion of his

Diploma according to the marks scored by a student in core, Advanced and Management

Group courses taken together.

FIRST CLASS will be awarded to an score of 60% and above and SECOND CLASS to the

score 50% and above.

8 IN HOUSE FACILITIES

Library Our Library has a large reading room and is well- equipped to accommodate over 90 students at

a time. It has got over 16000 books and 20 cassettes. It subscribes to technical journals,

magazines and daily newspapers. The Library is bifurcated into two parts, one reference section

and the other issue section.

‘BOOK BANK’ facilities are available to the students. Under this scheme books are issued on

loan, at the payment of 10% cost of the Books from each student

Library is kept open between 9.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. which in need is extended from 8.30 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. during examination.

GYMKHANA AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES The Polytechnic makes every effort to provide the facilities to its students to develop their

athletic sports and cultural activities. Gymkhana Committee constituted by the representative of

staff member and the students monitor the requirement of the students. Our institute regularly

participates in the ‘Zonal’ and “Inter Zonal’ tournaments conducted by ‘Inter Engg. Diploma

students Sports Association’ in Maharashtra State and Somaiya Sports Center.

Our Institute has facilities for Indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, Carom etc. and also for

outdoor games like Cricket, Football, Hockey, Volleyball, Kho-Kho ,Basketball etc. Currently

the campus has also provided for Volley ball court, Squash courts and an international athletic

track has been set up to encourage a strong sports culture amongst the students.

ISTE Chapter ISTE Chapter of our polytechnic organizes Guest Lecturers, Seminars & Workshops involving

eminent personalities from the Industry and other organizations in order to enhance and update the knowledge of the faculty and students in both technical and

educational fields.

Computer Centre The Computer Centre is equipped with latest computer systems like PIV systems. The Centre is divided into 2 sections as ( IT Lab, and Internet Lab). Each department is equipped with an

independent computer lab for usage in specialized software.

9 INSTITUTIES INTERACTION WITH OUTSIDE AGENCIES

INVOLVEMENT OF INDUSTRY It is our belief that in order to improve the effectiveness of Technical Education and to make it

industry – oriented, the industry, institute -interaction is a must. It has been our endeavour to

involve the experienced people from the industry in the activities of our institute so as to train

our students to acquire the capability to take up any assignment in the industry.

We have on our various committees, included prominent, high achievers from the industry to suggest the best possible ways for enhancing quality of our students for the mutual benefits.

INDUSTRY INSTITUTE INTERACTION Under Industry-Institute-Interaction, Training and placements are the chief aspects. In addition

to arranging visits, guest lectures, technical seminars. demonstration, etc. becomes easy.

Training in industry for the students is not mandatory but some interested students ask for it. So

training for of 2/4 weeks during vacation is arranged for interested students of the Diploma Programmes in different organizations. Even with recession due to globalization in the

Engineering Industries, we are fortunate that our students get suitable positions in the industries.

Our training & placement office has a very good liaison with various organization.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATION IN THE EXIBITION & COMPETITIONS In order to stimulate and develop the talents in the students, various competitions also are organized in the polytechnic under Students Association, which includes both co-curricular and

extra-curricular activities. The winners in those events are also sent to participate in the competitions held by other organizers outside the Institute.

H.L. NAIMER FUND FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE A Scholarship called the ‘H.L.Naimer Fund for Engineering Excellence’ will be awarded by the

Kraus and Naimer Group in honor of their late Chairman Mr. Hubert Launenz Naimer. Details shall be announced after admission in the classes.

ACADEMICS:

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

The department has well equipped Applied Mechanics, Material Testing, Soil Mechanics and Concrete Technology, Hydraulics Surveying and Civil Engineering Laboratories. The

department has developed teaching Models for trusses and reinforcement arrangement undertaken commercial testing of Street, Concrete and other building materials.

It has a good collection of building / construction materials, models of bungalows prepared by

students, Road and bridge section, Projects in Civil Engineering are selected so as to involve meeting of students with public department like PWD, Municipal Corporation , Gram

Panchayat. this leads students in entrepreneurship like contracting field. Environmental

laboratory has been added to the department. A new digital compression testing machine and

NDT equipment are added through MODROB grants of AICTE

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Well established Electric, Measurements, Electrical Machines Laboratory, Switchgear and

Protection are principal laboratories attached to the department.All the faculties are Post graduates and are well- experienced in their fields.

Besides these laboratories, provisions for i) Project Workshop (involving Assembly/

disassembly of machines and equipment) ii) Processes of preventive/ routine maintenance etc. are made. Specific laboratory instruction materials are prepared so that experiments are not

conducted as routine, but draw out underlying principles and make them think.

The Department always encourages the students to think out of the box and bring out their creativity.This has encouraged the students to design some equipments that catered to various

needs of the institute, mostly academic, and have bagged prizes even in International

competitions.

Industrial visits are arranged to expose the students to the latest techniques used in industries

Electrical department also boasts of having received Rs. 5.00 lakh under MODROB scheme,

AICTE, New Delhi, to modernize its existing Electrical machine laboratory.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT The Department has under its wings, well equipped Power Engines, Hydraulic, Machines,

Metrology Laboratories and a well established workshop in Carpentry, Fitting Smithy, Welding

and machine shop.

Power engineering Laboratory imparts to the students the knowledge of understanding characteristics and performance, testing of machines and study testing of Engines like petrol

engines and their maintenance.Whereas in the Hydraulic Machines laboratory students deal with the knowledge of characteristics and performance testing of Hydraulic machines. A

computerized petrol engine and refrigerator and Air Conditioning model has been added to Heat Engine laboratory using MODROB grants, AICTE.

Workshop practical & related skills in the various manufacturing processes are adopted in the

Production Lab.A number of items designed and fabricated by the first year students are on the

display, which are the proof of the capabilities developed in them to apply their knowledge, skill

and innovations for creative activities.

Computerized numerical control Milling Machine (Demonstration Kit) is recently added to

workshop.

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT The Industrial Electronics department was established in 1994 under the World Bank project.

Generous grants from the world Bank project has enabled the department to develop its

laboratories with latest instruments and computing facilities. The department offers some

compulsory and many optional courses at various levels that can be selected by the student to

suit their aptitude.

A separate Electronics workshop has been developed with facilities to prepare P.C.B.

considering the wide usage of digital technology in the industry, various microprocessors like 8085, 8086 and microcontrollers are included in the curriculum. The students work on project

where in they apply the skills acquired during the earlier terms. Industrial visits are arranged to expose the students to the latest techniques used in industries.

After completing this programme students confident to analyze any kind of technical situation in

their field of work. Embedded system laboratory is established recently. Most of the labs in the

department have been modernized with latest equipments.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Computer Engineering has become need of the present age. Keeping with this view the institute

has been granted permission to start (2006-07) with a total intake capacity of 60. Though this branch is new, care has been taken by prominent academicians to students a curriculum so as to

impart thorough knowledge of both software & Hardware to the students.

FACULTY A Competent and professional team of faculty members are backing up the educational system and are the pillars in the development of the polytechnic. Most of them are postgraduates in

engineering with over 10- 15 years of teaching experience. The faculty members have been keeping abreast with the technological developments taking place in the industry through the

quality improvement programmes, workshops, seminars etc. The dedication of the faculty has

created an active teaching learning interface.

SUPPORTING STAFF The administrative and non teaching staff working in various laboratories and office provides a

strong and active support in the smooth functioning of the polytechnic.

ADMISSIONS Admissions to 1st Semester & Higher Semesters are official in accordance with the rules framed

by Director of Technical Education, Govt. of Maharashtra.

QUALIFYING EXAMINATION AND ELEGILIBITY

Eligibility criteria for Maharashtra state / Outside Maharashtra state / Jammu & Kashmir

Migrant / Government of India Nominees / Candidate for admission to the post SSC First

Year of Diploma courses in Engineering /Technology.

• Candidate should be an Indian National.

• Candidate should have passed the SSC (Std.X) examination of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination with

subjects Mathematics, General Science and English with minimum 35% marks in

aggregate

The term ‘aggregate marks’ used here shall mean as follows

A. For Maharashtra State Board conditions :

1) The candidate who has passed SSC Examination prior to march 2009, the aggregate

marks shall be grand total of marks obtained by the candidate in any 5 subjects where

a. Students seeking admission on the basis of Group 1 & Group 2 subjects only, the

aggregate marks shall be the grand total of marks in any of the 5 subjects from

Group 1 & Group 2 where he/she has scored maximum marks. b. Students seeking admission on the basis of Group 1, Group 2 & Group 3, the

aggregate marks shall be the grand total of all subjects from all groups. C. For CBSE Candidates-

The aggregate mark means the grand total of marks obtained by the candidate, including all subjects as declared on mark sheet.

D. For CBSE / ICSE Candidates –

a. In case the result of the candidate is given grades, such candidates are required to

submit the result in a grade as converted to equivalent marks authorized by the

concerned Institute /Board.

b. Candidates passing SSC from other than State Board or Central Board shall bring an

equivalent Certificate from Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher

Secondary Education (MSBSHSE).

Note: Any amendments/Acts/Judgments which may be published by the

Government / Hon. Courts of India from time to time will be applicable to

Candidates and Institutes overall under these rules of admission.

DOMICILE Domicile certificate issued by the Maharashtra State’s appropriate authorities will be considered

valid. The domicile certificate of Mother of the candidate shall be supported with marriage

certificate and legal proof of the change in name if any. Such candidate will be required to

submit birth certificate clearly mentioning the name of the mother.

NATIONALITY Unless provided in these rules the candidate must be an Indian national.

* In lieu of the “Certificate of Indian Nationality” following documents will also be

acceptable-

1. The School leaving Certificate indicating the Nationality of the Candidates as

“Indian”

2. Indian Passport in the name of the candidate, issued by appropriate authorities.

3. Birth Certificate of the Candidate indicating the place of birth in India.

RESERVATION 1) Institute level reservations: - Under minority status awarded 50% seats of the intake to Guajarati Linguistic minority, in aided section and 51% seats will be reserved for Gujarati

Linguistic minority in unaided section 20% of sanctioned intake will be Institute Level Admission. All minority and institute level admissions in unaided section admission in aided

and unaided sections will be based on merit and through online admission process through web site www.somaiya.edu/admissions. Subject to approval by DTE Govt.of Maharashtra

2) Reservation for Backward Class Candidates:- In the remaining seats in the aided section

the following percentage of seats of the intake capacity shall be reserved for the candidates

belonging to the Backward Classes. If candidates fails to claim reservation for backward class

on the application and subsequently claims reservation at the time of admission by producing

necessary documents, such claim shall not be considered.

NOTE: • Reservation for backward class candidate i.e. 50% as stated above shall be available in

Government, Government Aided and Unaided Non-Minority Institutes.

• The reservation for backward class candidates shall not be available in unaided Minority Institutes/Colleges.

• Candidates belonging to special Backward Class (SBC) will be offered reservation up to

the extent of 2% seats of the avail to Maharashtra Candidates which are coming under

the purview of the Competent Authority subject to the condition that any seats remain

vacant in the reserved category at the end of stage-II of allotment. These seats are carved

out during the allotment of stage-II and no separate seats are earmarked before the start

of the allotment process. However care shall be taken that reservation quota for S.B.C.

Category shall not exceed 2% of the seats available under General admission process and

total reservation does not exceed 50%.

• Even if the candidate belonging to Backward Class Category secures admission against a seat belonging to the General Category by virtue of merit, such candidate has to produce

all the necessary documents in support of the category claimed both at the time of admission and while filling up of the CAP admission form.

• All OMS candidates are treated as GENERAL /OPEN category candidates and are not eligible to claim reservation.

CASTE VAILIDITY CERTIFICATE: Documents required to claim reservation for Backward Class candidates and fee waiver scheme.

The candidates belonging to SC,VJ/DT (NT (A)), NT(B), NT(C), NT(D), OBC and SBC

categories should produce “Caste Validity Certificate” issued by the Scrutiny Committee of

Social Welfare Department and the Candidate belonging to ST category should submit “Tribal

Validity Certificate” issued by the Scrutiny Committee of Tribal Department at the time of

claiming fees reimbursement as demanded by the concerned authority.

16 NORMS FOR REFUNDS OF FEES

CANCELLATION OF ADMISSION

Fees & cancellation of admission be as per the norms and guidelines from the Directorate

of Technical Education Maharashtra State (Subject to Change)

REFUND OF FEES Refund of tuition fee, development and other fees after cancellation of admission, shall be as per

AICTE guidelines No. 1) AICTE/Legal/04(01) 2007, April2007 and circular no.698 dtd 24/08/2007 issued by

Pravesh Niyantran Samithi, Mumbai. 2) Minutes of the meeting, Item No 5(e), Jhikshan Shulka Samiti & H&T, Dated 9th January

2013. Candidate who has been admitted may cancel admission by submitting an application in

duplicate, in the prescribed proforma-M, may request for refund of fees. The refund of fees as applicable shall be made in due course.

It is made clear that such application for cancellation will be considered of and only if the

admission is confirmed by paying the prescribed tuition fee and other fees in full and by

submitting the original documents.

Refund shall be made after deduction of cancellation charges as shown below.

RETENTION OF ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES: If a candidate is offered admission, his or her original School/College leaves Certificate (last

attended) will be retained by the concerned Admission Authority/Principal affecting the admission. The original certificate will not be returned to any candidate once admitted to a

course at the respective institute unless the candidates cancels his or her admission.

RETURNING OF CERTIFICATE 1) If during the course of studies, a candidate desires to discontinue studies for any reason

whatsoever, he or she shall be allowed to do so and it shall be presumed that he or she has cancelled admission at that stage. The Principal shall issue Institution Leaving

certificate and fees shall be refunded as provided in these rules. 2) If the admission is cancelled on or before 31st August of the admission year, the original

school or college leaving certificate on the strength of which a candidate was admitted

shall be returned.

3) If the admission is cancelled after 31st August of the admission year, the leaving

certificate from the Institution where the candidate was finally admitted should be issued.

A true copy of the original school or college leaving certificate retained by the institute

may be issued, if requested by the candidate, duly attested by the Head of the Institute.

17 MISCELLANEOUS

• The medium of instruction for Diploma in Engineering /Technology in all the institutes

is English

• Physical fitness: Head of the institution at his or her discretion may refer any condition to

the appropriate medical authority for ascertaining the physical fitness of the candidate to

undergo the requirement of the course. The report of medical authority shall be

submitted to the Regional Head of Technical Education for further necessary action. It is

to be noted that physically handicapped candidates are not provided with any additional

facilities as far as the academic activities pertaining to the course is concerned.

• Excess admission No excess admission above the approved sanctioned intake of the

institution is permitted in any case.

CONDUCT AND DESCIPLINE 1. Failure of the candidate in making full and correct statement in the application form

and/or suppression of any information and /or submission of false documents shall lead

to disqualification of the candidate for admission. Such a candidate will be detained

from the entire admission process. Therefore the candidate is required to make only such

claims which could be substantiated by relevant original documents

2. The students while studying in any college, if found indulging in anti-national activities contrary to the provisions of Acts and Laws enforced by Government or in any activity

contrary to rules of discipline, will be liable to be expelled from the college without any notice by the principal of the college.

3. Notwithstanding anything contained in these Rules, if the Govt. takes any policy decision pertaining to Diploma admissions, then the same shall be brought in to effect at

the point of time as per the directives from the Govt..from time to time

4. Any issue not dealt here-in above will be dealt with, when arising, fully and finally by

the competent Authority. 5. If any of the statement made in application form or any information supplied by the

candidate in connection with his or her admission is later on at nay time, found to be

false or incorrect, his or her admission will be cancelled, fees forfeited and he or she may

be expelled from the college by the principal. An appeal against the order of expulsion,

however, may be preferred within 7 days to the Director of Technical Education,

Maharashtra state, Mumbai, whose decision in such cases will be final.

IDENTITY CARD Each Student is required to possess a RFID Card issued by the Institute.

Students will not be allowed to enter the Campus, Class rooms, Library etc. and appear to

examination if they do not possess a valid Identity Card.

In case Identity Card is lost a duplicate will be issued if application along with a certificate from Police Authorities for having lodged the complaint about loss of card (FIR) and receipt for

payment of fine of Rs. 500/- should be submitted to office.

DRESS CODE The following dress code is required to be followed by students throughout their period of study.

Boys - Light Blue Full Sleeves shirt with small print and dark blue trouser.

Girls –Light Blue Kurta with small print or Embroidery. Dark blue Salwar and

Dark blue Chunari or Light Blue Shirt with Dark Blue Trouser.

18 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Lecture timing will be 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

2. All students who have taken admission in the college must possess a valid Identity card

((Identity cards are issued by the college at the beginning of the first term ) Identity card

is subject to inspection any day by the Principal or Teaching and Non teaching staff.

Students must carry with them their identity card. All the time they are on the campus

and should be carefully preserved in the holder of the identity card will be held responsible for its misuse, in case of loss of Identity card a duplicate must be obtained by

paying the prescribed charges and fulfilling the necessary formalities. 3. Mobile is not allowed in the institute. If found will be fined first time mobile will be

confiscated on another instance and will be returned after completion of the Diploma or on cancellation of admission.

4. Students should read the notices on the Notice Board regularly. 5. Students should submit an application for scholarship /free ship etc. as also the

Enrollment form (for first year diploma students) on time as per the Notices issued,

6. Students must maintain silence in the classes, Library, Reading Room, Office,

Laboratories and the corridors. When they are free they should make use of the

Polytechnic Library and must not loiter about on the Polytechnic premises or assemble in

the corridor. Loud conversation and shouting should be avoided.

7. Absence in any lecture in a day will lead to losing the attendance for the whole day.

Minimum 75% attendance and satisfactory progress of students are the essential

requirements for students to become eligible for examination

8. Students should clear all the dues before the end of the term.

9. Smoking, Chewing & Tobacco is strictly prohibited in the Campus

10. Unauthorized collection of money in Polytechnic for any purpose whatsoever is

prohibited.

11. Disciplinary action will be taken by the Principal against any students who is persistently in disciplined or is repeatedly or willfully mischievous or guilty of malpractice in

unauthorized alternation in the mark sheet or who in the opinion if the Head of the Institution has a troublesome influence on his fellow students.

12. Each and every student shall endeavor to preserve the high standard of the polytechnic excelling in good manners.

13. Students should not bring any outsider to the Polytechnic Premises. 14. Students shall not organize any picnics, tours, excursion, get together etc. without the

written permission of the Principal.

15. In case of any problem, students can approach their Faculty /HOD’s /Registrar/Principal

for help in solving their problems.

16. The Polytechnic has able and qualified staff who are building up a fine fiber of character

in the students committed to its core to help them in later life. The institute expects

observance of good conduct on the part of students. In this endeavors of needs and there

of hopes to receive advice, co-operation on the assistance from parents. They have to

watchful over their children to ensure that they attend Polytechnic regularly, abide by

rules and regulations and devote themselves to studies, cultural activities and to sports.

They can consult the Principal and the Teachers for any guidance that may need on this

behalf.

17. A student attired in any dress or with hair style which is considered to be not in harmony

with environment, is not allowed to enter the premises or remain on the campus unless such student changes his/her dress and style so as to confirm to the standards accepted by

the institution. The opinion of the Principal as regards proper dress code & hairstyle shall b e final binding.

18. The student should become conversant / familiar with all rules / norms related to autonomy and flexibility and multipoint entry and credit system by studying the book

which is in Exam Section.

19. It has also been observed that often the quiet academic atmosphere is distributed by

irrational playing of instruments. Therefore, FM Radio, Mobile phone, Transistor, Tape

Recorder or Musical instruments are not permitted on the campus except with previous written permission of the principal. Any students in possession of these instruments is

liable to disciplinary action.

ACTION AGAINST RAGGING

Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act 1999 which is in effect from 15th

may 1999

has the following provisions for Action against Ragging.

a) Ragging within or outside of any educational institution is prohibited.

b) Whosesoever within directly or indirectly commits, participate in abets or

propagates ragging within or outside any educational institute shall an conviction, be

punished with imprisonment tor a term up to 2 years and for penalty may extend to

ten thousand rupees..

c) Any student convicted of an offense of ragging shall be dismissed from the

educational institution and such student shall not be admitted in any other

educational institution for a period of five years from the date of order of such

dismissal..

d) Whenever any student or as the case may be, the parent or guardian or a teacher of

an educational institution complaints, in writing of ragging to the head of the

educational Institution, the head of the educational institution shall without prejudice

to the foregoing provisions, within seven days if the receipt If the complaint, enquire into the matter mentioned in the complaint and if, prima facie, it is found true,

suspend the student who is accused of the offence, and shall, immediately forward the complaint to the police station having jurisdiction over the area in which the

educational institution is situated, for further action. Where, on enquiry by the head of the educational institution, it is found that there is no substance, prima, facie, in

the complaint received: he/she shall intimate the fact, in writing, to the complainant. The decision of the head of the educational institution shall be final. If the head of the

educational institution fails or neglects to act in the manner specified in section “d”

above when a complaint of ragging is made, such person shall be deemed to have

abetted the offence and shall, on conviction, be punished a s provide for in section

“b” above.

As per the Appendix 12 of the AICTE Approval process hand book “Prevention and

Prohibition of Ragging” is given below.

In view of the directions of the Honorable Supreme Court in SLP No.24295 of 2006 dated

16.05.2007 and in Civil Appeal number 887 of 2009, dated 08.05.2009 to prohibit, prevent and

eliminate the Scourge of ragging including any conduct by any student or students whether by

words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with

rudeness a fresher or any other student, or including in rowdy or undisciplined activities by any

students or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological

harm or to raise fear or apprehension there of in any fresher or any other students or asking any

student to do any act which such students will not in the ordinary courses do and which has the

effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely

affect of the psyche or such fresher or any other students, with or without an intent to derive a

sadistic, pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a students over ay fresher or

any other student, in all higher education institutions in the country, and thereby, to provide for the healthy development, physically and psychologically, of all students, Ragging constitutes

one or more of any of the following acts :

20 What Constitutes Ragging: Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts:

1. Any conduct by any students or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act

which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student

2. Indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities by any student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyances, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or

apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other students 3. Asking any students to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and

which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche or such fresher or any other students

4. Any act by senior students that prevent,disrupt or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other students or a fresher;

5. Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other students for completing the academic tasks

assigned to an individual or group of students.

6. Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other

students by students;

7. Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it; sexual abuse, homosexual assaults.

Stripping forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger

to health or person;

8. Any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, posts, public insults which would also include

deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively

participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other students;

9. Any act that effects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other students with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or

superiority by a students over any fresher or any other student.

Actions to be taken against students for including and abetting ragging in

technical institutions. 1. The punishment to be meted out to the persons indulged in ragging has to be exemplary and

justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents.

2. Every single incident of ragging a First Information Report (FIR) must be filed without

exception by the institutional authorities with the local police authorities.

3. The Anti- Ragging Committee of the institutions shall take an appropriate decision, with

regard to punishment or otherwise, depending on the facts of each incident of ragging and

nature and gravity of the incident of ragging.

4. Depending upon the nature and gravity of the offence as established the possible

punishments for those found guilty of ragging at the institution level shall be any or any combination if the following.

a) Cancellation of admission b) Suspension from attending classes

c) Withholding/Withdrawing Scholarship/Freeship and other befits. d) Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process

e) Withholding results f) Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international

meet, tournament, youth festival, etc. g) Suspension/Expulsion from the hostel

h) Rustication from the institution for period ranging from 1 to 4 semesters

i) Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any

other institution.

j) Collective punishment, when the persons Committing or debating the crime of

ragging are not identified, the institution shall report to collective punishment as a

deterrent to ensure community on the potential raggers.
