I am delighted to be in Indonesia

on the occasion of the Belgian

economic mission under the

chairmanship of our Crown Prince

Philippe. Today, the global economy

is clearly facing new challenges. The

openness of markets is more than

ever the key to successfully deal

with those challenges. Breaking

down tradebarriers, providing a safe and stable business environment

and sharpening our competitive edges are the guidelines towards the

economic development of tomorrow.

It is the right moment to organize a Belgian economic mission to

Indonesia. With its 6,3% growth, Indonesia has experienced its highest

economic growth over the last ten years, which is mainly driven by

a strong increase in private consumption. This is not a trivial factor

when considering Indonesia, a country that, with almost 220 million

inhabitants, ranks as 4th largest country in the world in terms of

population.

f o r e w o r d b y H . e . M i n i s t e r K a r e l d e G u c H t

We are deliberately targeting the Indonesian market to explore new

business opportunities, considering Indonesia’s listing as one of the

“NEXT 11 emerging economies”, the so called BRIC-successors. This

position was confirmed by last year’s foreign direct investments in

Indonesia, which amounted to 40,1 billion dollars, compared to 15,6

billion dollars in 2006. The prospect of an ASEAN common market will

also reinforce its strong position in South-East Asia.

This mission will offer both Belgium and Indonesia, a splendid

opportunity to reinforce their already strong ties, in view of capitalizing

on the enormous potential we share. The strong participation of

numerous important Belgian companies to this mission is confirming

this view.

Karel De Gucht

Minister for Foreign Affairs

The Belgian trade and

economic Mission to Indonesia

is a milestone in a common

history which is longer than

many could think.

In 1909, it was indeed a Belgian

agronomist who succeeded in

breeding palm trees to produce

the perfect hybrid which would

generate large quantities of high

quality palm oil, a development

which has changed the economy of some Indonesian provinces.

Later on, Belgium was part of the UN panel which helped the new

Nation to reach international recognition and, starting in the seventies,

many Belgian companies developed production facilities in Java and our

bilateral trade and investment grew considerably.

f o r e w o r d b y H . e . a M b a s s a d o r M a r c t r e n t e s e a u

In the late eighties, H.R.H. Prince Albert, now King Albert,

acknowledging the importance of the latest Asian “tiger”, led a trade

and economic mission to Indonesia, which helped to attract new

Investors to this beautiful country.

During the tumultuous period which ensued, the continuous

development of our bilateral relation was never severed and Belgian

Investors remained faithful to their Indonesian partners.

It is therefore an important moment in our bilateral relation that a

large Belgian Economic and Trade Mission under leadership of HRH

Prince Philippe has come to Indonesia. It was the first such mission for

many years and its success shows the renewed interest of the Belgian

Business community for this great country.

There have been many smaller missions in the past, but this time more

than eighty companies and one hundred businessmen from our three

regions, Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, and have taken part to this

five days intensive working visit to Jakarta and Bandoeng.

The programme of the visit, co-organized by the Belgian Agency for

Foreign Trade with the support of Federal and Regional Authorities, has

offered the possibility to hold Business to Business contacts around

“clusters” of expertise such as water treatment, waste management,

energy, engineering, harbour management and logistics, etc.

This mission, like all missions under leadership of HRH Prince Philippe,

was aiming at strengthening the relationship between our two countries

and at contributing to build a new long lasting partnership, which is not

limited to trade and economic issues. During their stay in Indonesia, TT

RR HH Prince Philippe and HRH Princess Mathilde contributed also to

a better understanding between our two countries through their high

level contacts and her constant attention for development and gender

issues.

One can say that he mission has fulfilled a seminal function, introducing

new companies to Indonesia and reinforcing existing ties. More than

that, it was also an opportunity for our Indonesian friends and partners

to be better acquainted with Belgium, not only through business to

business contacts but also through attendance to a momentous gala

evening, which has sparked and shone like one of our beautiful Antwerp

Diamonds to the melodic tune of one of our best walloon jazz bands!

And, reciprocally, it has offered an excellent opportunity for the Belgian

business community to be introduced with that beautiful and well kept

secret of Asia, the Republic of Indonesia!

I, therefore, feel very honoured as Ambassador of the Kingdom of

Belgium to Indonesia to have contributed to the success of this Mission.

This would not have been possible without the support of an energetic

and enthusiastic Embassy team and I wish to take this opportunity to

thank them once again for their great endeavour.

Marc Trenteseau

Ambassador

Chef Emmanuel Stroobant

has indeed come a long way!

He started his career at a

tender age of 16 – cleaning

dishes in one of the best

restaurants in Belgium.

Hoping to save some money

to pay his way through

university, Stroobant’s first

ambition was to be a lawyer.

Whilst finishing high school

and juggling between his

night job, Stroobant took a liking to his working environment, and before

long he was on his way to peeling, chopping vegetables and making

salads!

At 18, he well and truly decided to take the culinary path and enrolled

at a hospitality institute in Belgium. For four years he was seconded

to various parts of the country to experience different management

e M M a n u e l s t r o o b a n t - c o M i n G o f a G e

styles and cuisine genres. Fortunately for Stroobant, his training stages

encompassed some of the very best restaurants in Belgium, including

one, two and three star Michelin establishments.

At 23, he opened his first restaurant in his hometown, Liege. It was an

over night success and after three summers, Stroobant wanted another

adventure. He travelled to various places, and finally settling in Australia

for a period of five years.

Following that, he made a decision, which changed his whole life. He

decided to come to Asia. His first stop was in Kuala Lumpur in September

1997. During his two years in Kuala Lumpur, he quickly adapted to the

local scene and culture. Stroobant made it a point to understand the

needs and wants of his patrons and soon after was duly awarded with

the recognition of ‘Best Expatriate Chef 1999’ by World Asia Media.

In that same year Stroobant and his wife Edina moved to Singapore to

yet again experience another life changing episode. They both joined a

small café/restaurant located in an obscure part of Singapore called

The Fig Leaf.

Nine months later, The Fig Leaf moved to a bigger and better location.

In the mean time, the couple had grown fond of the hole in the wall

concept. In addition, the cosiness of the restaurant meant that each and

every customer was attended to in a personalised manner. Hence, the

birth of Saint Pierre – The Restaurant in December 2000.

Eighteen months on, Stroobant has clinched several more awards

– Wine and Dine ‘Best New Restaurant 2002’, ‘Most Innovative Menu

2002, 2004 and 2007’. World Gourmet Summit – Award of Excellence,

‘Best New Restaurant 2002 and 2003’, ‘Chef of the Year 2002 and 2006’

and his most recent achievement, ‘Restaurant of the Year 2007’. In 2008,

Saint Pierre became a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Saint Pierre moved to bigger premises in mid-2002 with better frontage

and more room in the kitchen to facilitate Stroobant’s creative streak.

Following that, Stroobant has moved on to writing two cook books,

‘Cuisine Unplugged’ and ‘Vine Dining – White’ which has won the

Gourmand World Media Award for “Best in the World Matching Food

and Wine”. Plus, he also has his own TV series titled, ‘Chef in Black’ and

subsequently ‘Chef in Black II’.

In addition to the books and TV show, Stroobant has also opened up

several outlets, San Marco, a fine dining modern European Italian

restaurant sitting on top of the Fullerton Hotel is a partnership with

Pastry Chef extraordinaire and good friend, Roxan Villareal. Opening

two years after San Marco, Brussels Sprouts, offers Belgian fare and

a rich variety of beers at The Pier on Robertson and the most recent

addition to the family, Picotin, a family-style eatery situated at 100 Turf

Club Road with talented and formidable Food & Beverage personality,

Sebastien Reullier and Jacky Stevens.

Antwerp has a prosperous and lively commerce, rich history and deeply

rooted traditions. Diamonds form an integral part of the cultural history

of Antwerp, from its golden age until the present day… Antwerp and

diamonds have been closely linked since the 14th century. Since the rule

of Charles V (1500 -1550), the city has become the cosmopolitan and

cultural capital of Europe. Antwerp lies in the heart of Europe, bordered

by the Netherlands, Germany and France, close to the coast of Great

Britain. Its port is one of the largest in the world. The city is only a half-

hour drive from Brussels, Belgium’s capital and headquarters of the

European Union and NATO. Antwerp is a city with a special charisma.

Its impressive architectural heritage, museums and art, its location

in the heart of Europe, its harbour and its international reputation as

a designer paradise. As a cosmopolitan business centre, open to free

enterprise and all cultures Antwerp has become the world’s leading

diamond centre.

Antwerp has the best diamond workers in the world. For more than

500 years, Antwerp has been closely associated with diamonds. The

resulting know how and technical expertise provides Antwerp with a

unique craftsmanship. Today, Antwerp’s tradition of highly skilled

master cutters is combined with modern technology developed by its

local diamond research centres.

Antwerp’s diamond sector is mainly active around the Rijfstraat,

Hoveniersstraat, Schupstraat, Vestingstraat and Pelikaanstraat adjacent

to the Central Railway Station. There is a unique atmosphere in this area

with a mosaic of nationalities rubbing shoulders while maintaining a

deep respect for each other’s cultures and religions. It is a multicultural

hive of activity, buzzing with the business of import and export of

rough and polished diamonds, as well as industrial diamond, in every

possible colour, shape or form and quality. Antwerp has four diamond

bourses. Beurs voor Diamanthandel, Diamantclub van Antwerpen, Vrije

Born in Ieper (Belgium) on 4th March 1957, his training as an interior

decorator (St. Luc Brussels) served as his initiation to work with volumes

and materials. After three years of activity as a decorator, he discovered

his love for fashion and began presenting his own collection in 1984.

For years now, Edouard Vermeulen has created fashions for the Belgian

royal family as well as for the royal courts of Sweden, The Netherlands,

Denmark and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg for which he has been

honoured in March 2003 with the insignia of Officer of the Order of King

Leopold II. His creations also appeal to performance artists and many

jet set personalities.

Edouard Vermeulen has created a personal style of contemporary purity,

a source of femininity and refinement. The richness of the materials

lends purity to the simplicity of the forms. A style resolutely suited to an

active and refined woman of today.

This Belgian harmonica player

was born in 1958. As a self-taught

musician, he was very early

involved in listening to great harp

players like, of course, the Belgian

Master Toots Thielemans. But

he was also loving the sound of

Blues Harp that much. So, unlike

most harpists who favor one or

the other, Thierry became equally

proficient on both chromatic

and diatonic harmonicas. He was soon acclaimed as belonging to the

elite of the new generation of harmonica artists. He’s now for years

busy with studio sessions, workshops and concerts and he’s especially

fond of playing in small combos, as with the Trio he formed with Erno,

keyboards and Chris DePauw, guitar, for his first project as band leader.

This project issued on CD « La Nouvelle Donne » (2004) and revealed a

finely-crafted, sensitive music - own compositions with latin, folk and

jazz influences.

A new CD called « Versions Originales » was released in April 2007; in

the same time the trio upgraded to quartet with Achim Tang on double

bass. Also featuring as very special guests: Sanseverino, Bill Barrett

and Karim Baggili.

v e r s i o n s o r i G i n a l e s

Thierry Crommen’s latest show, entitled « Versions Originales », reveals

the eclectic side of this Belgian harp player. A combination of original

compositions as well as some distinctive covers, the show’s material is

indeed reflective of its title.

With Chris DePauw on acoustic guitar, Erno on piano, and Achim Tang

on double bass, Thierry leads the quartet and their audience to the

crossroads of Folk, Jazz and even Chanson Française (the genre made

popular by Edith Piaf a.o.). There is an energy and spontaneity to each

show made possible by the musicians’ mastery of their instruments as

well as their repertoire.
