The Bell
March 24, 2013 Palm Sunday of
the Passion of the Lord
Mission Statement We, the people of St. Mary Parish because of our baptismal promises and compelled by our
Catholic identity, seek to be an example of God’s presence by worship, education, and service to our neighbors with sensitivity to those most in need of God’s love.
The Easter Triduum
Lent exists so that we can prepare ourselves for the Easter Triduum. Triduum comes from a Latin word meaning “three days.” The three day observance begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the evening of Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil and ends with evening prayers on Easter Sunday. One twenty-four hour period is just not enough time to truly experience and celebrate this tremendous mystery. The solemn liturgies of the Triduum are the most important
liturgies of the Church year. These liturgies teach us the meaning of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The richness of the symbols and rituals help us to experience the mysteries of Jesus’ final hours, His passion, suffering—and His rising from the dead. In a special way, during these three days, we come together as the people of God to remember the saving act of Jesus, the miracle of His resurrection—and to celebrate our faith and identity as Christians. Because Christ was willing to die for our sins and was raised from the dead, death is no longer the end of life for us. It is the beginning of a new life in Him. How can we pay close attention—so that we can enter deeply into these mysteries? The Church suggests that we fast, especially on Good Friday and, if possible, Holy Saturday, too. Why fast? The purpose of the fasting is to gain awareness into the mysteries of the Triduum. Fasting from food—and sin and increasing our acts of love, we stand at the foot of the cross on Good Friday—and think about Jesus dying for all of us. What greater love? “Jesus, you love me so much, you died for me.” Fasting helps us to become aware of our hunger for Jesus—and our desire to be like Him. It causes us to eagerly desire to receive our Easter Eucharist.
Holy Thursday
The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which includes the washing of feet, is the only Mass celebrated on Holy Thursday. We watch as Jesus shares His last Passover meal with His friends. We hear Jesus giving us the Sacrament of the Eucharist. He tells us, “Do this in remembrance of me.” The washing of the feet is a sign and symbol of the service we are called to live. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper ends in silence without a closing procession, because our celebration has not ended. We all are invited to spend some time with Jesus, to “keep watch” with Christ, in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as we prepare for Good Friday.
Good Friday
It is a day of fasting and mourning. It includes: the reading of the Passion of Jesus. We listen and remember again how Jesus suffered and died for our sins. That we participate in the Adoration of the Cross. The Cross is the means of our salvation. We come forward; we bow before it, kiss it, touch it, or stand in front of it and say a short prayer.
Easter Vigil
It is the high point of the Easter Triduum—celebrating the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. It includes: blessing the new fire, lighting of the paschal candle, singing Alleluias, the Easter Proclamation, and Initiation of Catechumens. These “Three Days” remind us of death and rebirth. They are the holiest and most important days of celebration in the Catholic Church! During these three days, we focus on one event—the Passover of the Lord—our Easter. Please join us for this three day celebration! Fr. Tom

God’s Holy Name
I hear God’s name all around me—but often not used in a holy way.
Nasty language is all around us these days—whenever and wherever people gather. “O God!” can be a prayer or a curse.
The Divine Praises is a prayer that most older Catholics know. We can pray a line of this prayer whenever we hear God’s name taken in vain. So when we hear someone say, “God, that’s great!” we can say aloud or to ourselves, “Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name.” When “Holy Mother of God!” is said, we can respond: “Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.”
Repeat after me: Blessed be God.
Blessed be his Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the name of Jesus. Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be his most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the most holy Sacrament of the altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.
The Divine Praises is a prayer developed during a time in history when coarse language was widespread, by a Jesuit priest named Luigi Felici. In 1779 he wrote 5 or 6 “Blesseds”; others were added later. “Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete,” was added as late in history as 1964. St. Augustine (4th century) called such one-line prayers “javelins.” He wrote, “The monks in Egypt are said to offer frequent prayers, but these are very short and hurled like swift javelins.” Other saints have called these one-line prayers “arrow” prayers.
God revealed God’s name as “I Am Who Am,” as an act of trust that the Israelites would keep God’s name holy. Orthodox Jews today do not say or even spell out God’s name because it is so holy.
The Divine Praises aren’t prayed or heard in many settings any more. Praying one of the “Blesseds” will help us correct our own misuse of God’s name and encourage us to use God’s name respectfully. You might want to pray the Blesseds with your children or grandchildren. Barbara Outly [email protected]

Holy Week is here, and that means the end of Lent. As you prepare to indulge yourself with choco-late delights, and all the pop you can drink, let’s not forget what this whole Lenten fast has been about. His Life, Death, and Resurrection. An acquaintance once told me that The Resurrection is an “illogical belief” we Christians hold, and I am here to tell you, like I told them, that it absolutely is not. There is so much historical evidence that shows Jesus Christ being crucified, laid in a tomb, and nowhere to be found the next day.
There was an empty tomb, no matter what “modern day scholars” may say, and on this empty tomb, there was a Roman Seal that consisted of a clay-covered rope that went around the stone with a Roman Seal stamped into it. Had the seal been broken, the law would have been broken as well, hence the consequence: death. At this tomb, there were four guards standing in front of a two-ton stone about seven or eight feet high, which would require more than one person to remove, and the guards would have noticed them. Christ Himself told us that not only was He going to be betrayed by an Apostle, but that He would die, and “rebuild The Temple in 3 days!” It’s not like it caught Him by surprise. But for me, the most important piece of evidence is that Jesus appeared to hundreds of people after His Resurrection, and these people were brought before the Roman leaders and asked if they had seen a resurrected Jesus. Without any hesitation, they all answered with the same resounding YES! After they said yes, they were killed. One by one they were martyred. The Roman Empire promised forgiveness to them if they said that everything was a lie, or changed their story, but they replied CREDO! I BELIEVE! What could they possibly have gained by lying? They knew that Our God, a God who conquered death through His resurrection, would resurrect them as well. This is why we can understand suffering, because without Christ to show us how much good can come from it, suffering is pointless. St. Paul puts it best in 1 Corinthians 15:12-18. There is no “Fountain of Youth” or magic pill. There is no cure for death. But what Jesus Christ showed us 2000 years ago, and shows us every year on Easter Sunday, is that He is the cure. Through Him and His Resurrection, we have eternal life. That is Truth, and what a beautiful Truth it is. Our Youth Group meets almost every Sunday from 6-7pm in the Oak Room Lounge. Please pray for our teens, and come join us sometime. Lorenzo N.

TOTUS TUUS (Totally Yours)
A weeklong summer catechetical youth program is coming to St. Mary Church July 21-26. For grade school children (1-6) it runs from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm and the day includes: catechetical instruction, daily Mass, songs, games and recess. For grades 7-12 they meet in the evenings Sunday-Thursday from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
TOTUS TUUS combines catechesis with FUN by bringing in 4 dynamic and energetic college aged teachers to lead our children closer to Christ. The cost will be minimal. Come join us this summer in welcoming this new program to St. Mary. We are looking for volunteers to help with the day and evening programs, as well as host the teachers for dinner.
If you are interested in having your children attend the program, to volunteer, or both, contact Lorenzo Nuñez at [email protected] for more information. Registration forms are available in the Narthex, or the Parish Office in the Rectory.

LEAVE A LEGACY
We are grateful for the generous support that you give to St. Mary through your weekly contributions. Have you considered providing for the continuation of that support by including the parish in your Will?
Bequests given to the parish through Wills are for the sole use of St. Mary Parish. To include the parish in your Will, the correct language is:
“I give (a percentage or amount) to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago - A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of St. Mary Parish, Riverside.”
Thanks for giving consideration to leaving a legacy!
