The Benefits of the new Trebuchet System designed by Michael Bell. Managing Director.Bloke Fly Rods.
The Bloke Trebuchet System offers exciting benefits to the modern two handed fly caster. First of all, the Trebuchet interchangeable weights system positioned in the butt of the rod adds to the leverage you can apply to the blank, enabling the cast to be made with less effort from the bottom hand in double handed casting.
Because the Trebuchet System is located behind the fly reel, it acts in a different way to just adding a heavier fly reel. Simply increasing the weight of the fly reel does add to the overall leverage effect but here’s where the Bloke Trebuchet System differs. In having a fine adjustment
placed behind the reel you are able to more effectively dampen unwanted vibration (in the form of tip bounce) as the system works in conjunction with the reel to help dampen the rod. By adding adjustments (and taking the weight of the reel into account) the system can fine tune the amount of dampening you require to suit your own feel.
In order for a double handed rod to load correctly and produce casts of 40yards+ it is crucial that both hands work with equal and opposite force to load the rod spring as efficiently as possible, by adding a counter-weight in the bottom of the rod it is possible to exert more tension into the blank and produce longer casts. Similarly, it is also of great benefit for casting into wind and turning over a long leader and heavy fly.

Because the Trebuchet system enables the rod to be loaded to its maximum capacity we have had to develop a blank that is capable of not only withstanding the pressure but also returning to its original shape in the tip to avoid “Tip Bounce”. In order to do this we have used a variety of high modulus carbon fibre cloths integrated with a Uni-Directional carbon fibre which enables us to keep the diameter of the blank and the blank walls as thin as possible. The rods are available in the following sizes:
By utilising the Trebuchet system you will also be able to balance the rod much more efficiently and a rod that is balanced is a much easier and more comfortable tool to use than most Salmon rods which are generally tip heavy. As the two photographs reveal below (this is a 16’ four piece 10/11wt rod with fitted with a Vosseler S3 reel weighing 244gms).
