She is now a portfoliomanager at Barclays Global Investors. “Getting an MBA was always a personal goal,” saysSabau. “You have to have support at home and at work. I knew that if I was going to makethis investment and ask so much from my family, I wanted a good school. Haas did anexcellent job of acknowledging that and bringing the family in to participate. There are anumber of family and spouse events.”

Sabau was born in Romania, and began her professional career in the banking industry inBucharest. At Haas, she found that the students themselves provided a supportive environ-ment. “It is not your typical competitive MBA program,” she says. “Everyone is there to learn, and they are willing to share their experiences.”

In addition to her peers, Sabau appreciated the school’s faculty. “The professors were great, with a lot of real-world experience.” Sabau uses the material she learned on a daily basis. “Onmy bookshelf at work I have a textbook from my financial analysis class, written by my pro-fessor, that I refer to probably every other day.”

The World is the ClassroomAs business has gone global, so too has the Evening &Weekend MBA Program. The Haas School provides a vari-ety of courses, special programs, exchange opportunities, club activities, and research centers that focus on the inter-national business environment.

Study Overseas

Evening & Weekend MBA students can choose to travel abroad in the summer as part of theInternational Business Seminar (IBS) taught by Sebastian Teunissen, executive director of the Haas School’s Clausen Center. Typically, students study and visit two countries with con-trasting economies, meeting with senior management of companies and organizations. “Thisprogram is designed to teach MBAs about the challenges and opportunities of doing busi-ness internationally,” says Teunissen.

In 2003, students traveled to Mexico, Panama, and Cuba, visiting a wide variety of companiesand industries, and meeting with key professionals, including the executive director of thePanama Stock Exchange and Canada’s senior trade commissioner in Cuba.

In 2004, IBS students traveled to South Africa in the tenth anniversary year of apartheid, where they ventured 3,000 meters below the Earth’s surface to tour a mine, and met withsuch corporate leaders as the general manager of Pfizer, and the three top officials of theAngloGold Ashanti goldmine.

Semester Abroad

Evening & Weekend MBA students desiring a more in-depth international experience mayspend a semester abroad. Students may choose from a select list of leading businessschools in Europe, Latin America, and Asia for an international exchange program.

In addition, the Clausen Center awards fellowships every year for students to attend the summer Interstate Programme in Brussels, a non-profit venture that brings together future business leaders to analyze developments in the European Union and its relationswith the US. Last year, Evening & Weekend students received three of the five $1,000fellowships available.

Integral to Haas Culture

The international emphasis of the Haas School is also an integral part of its culture.Students come from 17 different countries, and the majority are multi-lingual. Several student-run clubs focus on international business issues, such as the Pacific Rim Club,South Asia Club, the European Business Club, and the Latin American Business Club. The Berkeley Asia Business Conference looks at business trends affecting technology and trade in the Pacific Rim.

In addition, many Haas School faculty members conduct research that is international infocus. Leading this effort is the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy, whichsupports a host of research-related activities for the greater Haas community.

Cultivating Leadership as an Attitude“Haas has reinforced my belief that leadership is an attitude one can cultivate and enhance,”says Jayashree Balasubramanian, who serves as a group lead at Intel in advanced processcontrol. “During my studies here, I’ve benefited from formal coaching, as well from the manyteam opportunities available to exercise leadership abilities.” She adds, “Most people at Haasare leaders in their own right. It is very exciting to interact with and learn from one another.”

Navigating the Intersection of Law and BusinessEvening & Weekend MBA student Phil Strauss was a competitiveIronman triathlete until he was seriously injured by a car during atraining ride. “While recovering, I decided that I had to find some-thing safe to do during my weekends,” he laughs.

Having traded in his heart rate monitor for an HP12C calculator,Strauss works at Adobe Systems Incorporated as corporate counselsupporting the Intelligent Documents Business Unit. Straussreturned to school part-time because “As in-house counsel, I wasincreasingly being asked to give non-legal business advice. TheBerkeley MBA program has already given me the tools to mosteffectively support my internal business clients.”

Strauss notes that balancing the demands of family, school, andwork can itself be a “triathlon,” but says, “It absolutely can be done. This program is structured with an appreciation for the manydemands upon its students. In my cohort, six students – includingme – had children during the first year and we all came back for thesecond year. It helps to have such a team orientation at Haas – aswell as to have a supportive spouse and a baby that sleeps a lot.”

A typical EWMBAweek, by PhilStrauss, MBA 05:Monday: I catch the early trainfor a meeting at work; and aCompetitive Strategy (CS) arti-cle keeps me occupied duringthe commute. During the meet-ing, I utilize lessons from myMergers & Acquisitions (M&A)class as we discuss the appro-priate valuation multiple for theacquisition under considera-tion. 9:00 pm that night findsme at home with my wife, my10-month old daughter in bed. Iprepare a Financial InformationAnalysis (FIA) financial modelon the computer.

Tuesday: I work out at lunch, get home at 6:00 p.m. andpick up a quick dinner. Iassemble LegosQ while mydaughter takes them apart. After she goes to bed, I readmy CS case, take rough notes, and skim 200 pages of M&A;retiring to bed after midnight.

Wednesday: Although I’m aweekend student, I take an extraclass at Haas on Wednesdaynights. At work, I skip lunch andwork feverishly to get out of theoffice to catch the 4:15 SouthBay shuttle. On the bus, I workwith a classmate on an M&A val-uation model and read the WallStreet Journal. Upon arrival atschool, I answer work e-mail Imissed that afternoon and headto my M&A class. A final cup ofcoffee gets me through classuntil dinner.

Thursday: I write the first draftof our FIA case write-up on thetrain and at lunch. I sneak out foran afternoon workout and gethome by 7:00 p.m. I relax, cookdinner, and eat with my family. Then it’s time to dial in to mystanding 9:30 p.m. group con-ference call with classmates todiscuss CS and FIA projects.

Friday: I exchange drafts of theFIA write-up by e-mail andengage in an instant-messagediscussion about the group’s CSgame strategy. Working out atlunch, I read another CS articleon the elliptical trainer. I discusssoftware licensing models withmy boss in the afternoon. I’mhome by 5:00 p.m. and go out toan early dinner with the family.

Saturday: Today’s classes areat the Haas School in Berkeley.Competitive Strategy is first --the robust discussion keeps theclass lively. At noon, we go out-side to get some sun. By 1:00p.m. we’re back in class for FIA.The class agrees that the subjectcompany is great but way over-valued. Finally, it’s 4:00 p.m. Iget home and enjoy the compa-ny of my friends and family forthe next 24 hours.

Shuttles Ease the Commute To ease the commute for eveningstudents, the Haas School oper-ates two shuttle buses from theSouth Bay and Peninsula. The ridegives students additional opportu-nities to network while riding toand from school. Shuttle bus serv-ice is also provided from theBerkeley BART station to the Haas School.

Steve Cobbs, MBA 05, takes the shuttle after leaving his job assenior program manager at SunMicrosystems in Santa Clara.“The shuttle bus is one of the mostenjoyable, most social aspects ofthe MBA program,” says Cobbs.“The bus ride to class is usuallyfairly productive. We will oftentake time to discuss a caseanalysis, finish up class assign-ments and readings, or just chatabout class in general. In a worldof limited time, that extra hourproves to be really useful. I eventhink that our grades are a bithigher as a result.”

The ride back home is usuallymore social. “Spending four hoursa week with my bus-mates hascreated a strong friendshipbetween us,” continues Cobbs.“On the way back home, we usually end up just talking, laugh-ing, and trying to coordinate anoff-bus activity like a salsa night or Friday night South Bay dinner. On occasion we have even man-aged some on-bus “parties” suchas a gift exchange for Christmasand baby shower for a newlyexpectant father.”

Utilizing Business Knowledge to Enrich Public PolicyNiko Letunic is an urban planner for the City of Oakland, working on varied projects, includ-ing environmental protection issues, waterfront development, and disaster preparedness.Letunic decided to get his MBA to differentiate himself professionally in the public sector.“My entire professional background has been in the government and non-profit sectors,”says Letunic. “I came to Haas to give my career an edge by upgrading my general skills andto learn business skills, which are increasingly important in the functioning of both govern-ment agencies and non-profit organizations.”

Letunic feels that the business curriculum has had a great impact. “Mine is an entirely non-business background,” says Letunic, “So the coursework has exposed me to a whole newbody of knowledge, set of experiences, and group of people. On a daily basis I find myselfthinking about work-related and other issues very differently. Now that I add the lens of busi-ness realities, I feel like my public-policy perspective is more nuanced and richer.”

At Haas, Letunic has been impressed by the faculty. “They know the material, many havereal-life experience, and it’s obvious they enjoy interacting with students and care abouthelping us learn,” says Letunic “I look forward to going to class every time. After a full dayat work, the professors and my classmates keep me focused, interested, and entertainedevery minute.”

Learning the Elements of Success for Entrepreneurs

“Haas gave me all of the opportunities to do what I’m doing now,” says Peter Fiske, MBA 02and co-founder of RAPT Industries. Already successful as a scientist, author, and lecturer, Fiskefirst came to the Haas School of Business as leader of a research group at Lawrence LivermoreNational Laboratory who wanted to move into technology and business development.

“I came to Haas because it is the premier evening MBA program in the Bay Area,” saysFiske. The Berkeley MBA program inspired him to start his own business, based on develop-ing a Lawrence Livermore technology for commercialization. The result was RAPTIndustries (Reactive Atom Plasma Technology), which is creating a new technology forrapidly etching and polishing optical and semiconductor materials.

It was RAPT’s solid business plan that won him and his colleagues first place at the UCBerkeley Business Plan Competition in 2001. “Scientists tend to think that it’s just the tech-nology that makes a company successful,” Fiske acknowledges. “At Haas, I learned about allof the other important elements, such as law, finance, and marketing, that are necessary tomake a company successful.”

Fiske singles out guest speakers as being especially useful. “They gave a practical and real-world perspective that I really appreciate now that I’m running a business myself.”

Gaining an Edge – Sharpening Real Estate Skills“Every function I perform at work has been strengthenedand improved by my studies at Berkeley,” states JoeTambornino, matter-of-factly. Negotiating leases, land pur-chases, asset sales, construction contracts, building devel-

opment teams and establishing financing are only a few of Tambornino’s tasks that havebeen strengthened by his Haas education. He, however, has not always been prepared forhis role as vice president for Meridian Property Company, a Marcus and Millichap affiliate.“Whole areas of real estate development and finance, which were little more than blackboxes when I began this program, are now wonderfully transparent,” muses Tambornino, a former opera and classical music singer.

After working in real estate and as a professional singer, Tambornino realized that he neededto gain a different skill set to advance in his career. “I figured I needed the knowledge, con-tacts and prestige afforded by the Berkeley MBA to put me into a position where I couldmake up for those lost years and uneven education.”

Tambornino enrolled in the Evening & Weekend MBA Program at the Haas School ofBusiness while working for a real estate development company. “The core courses wereinstrumental in giving me the tools and techniques for understanding the world I work in.The Haas School’s national prominence as a real estate business school was a perfect fit formy goals, and even before I got the MBA, I was promoted to Vice President.”

Tambornino found a home at Haas—he thrived as the chairman of the Student AdvisoryCommittee, as a director of the Evening & Weekend MBA Association, and through involve-ment in the Real Estate Club. To his delight, he enjoyed every minute of it, “Without question, this has been the most valuable and enjoyable educational experience in my life.”
