Collective Worship
The collections at our service amounted to £14.20 & £4.10. Thank you to all who sent in contributions. We use the church at least twice a week and the funds go towards the upkeep and heating for the church. Our assembly is now on a FRIDAY for collections. The children like using the church and have a great understanding of its artefacts. Can we ask for everyone to bring a small donation. Thank you.
Michael White talked about
King Solomon and choosing
his wisdom as his gift to God.

We would like to remind
parents that the last weeks of
the summer term are really
important as the children not
only carry out assessments but
they learn about their new
class/school and have move up
sessions to make sure they are
fully prepared for September,
we also arrange special wow
activities and an annual school
trip so they can celebrate their
hard work so we ask that you
avoid taking your children out
of school for during this period.
Staffing
Last Friday we appointed Mrs Powrie to cover Mrs Hardwick’s maternity leave in Squirrels. She will work on
Thursdays and Fridays, starting in September until the end of May 2019.
We interviewed five candidates and it was a very strong field. Squirrels will probably get an opportunity to meet
Mrs Powrie before the end of term and I’m sure you join me in welcoming her to Berkley and we hope that she
really enjoys her time with us.
Pupils
We were very pleased with the Phonics screening testing which Year One pupils took individually last week. The
testing showed how much progress they have each made this year. My thanks to the Year One staff and of course
to you, the parents for supporting your children.
This Tuesday, a Somerset Literacy adviser (Sarah Cook) worked with some of our children on improving their
writing skills. This is the third time she has worked with some of our children this year and the impact has been
most positive for the pupils and indeed on the staff, as we have been able to tap into her expertise and to glean
even more ideas from her
I really look forward to receiving the pupils’ writing when they take up my head teacher’s challenge. I had two
super pieces last week from Noah and Lara about advice for the new children starting in reception in September.
My challenge for the next two weeks to all the pupils is as follows:
We are focusing on Wisdom through our church services this term and the pupils heard about
Solomon choosing Wisdom as his gift from God. So my challenge to the pupils is: If God
granted you one gift, what gift would you choose and why?
Last Friday the disco was well-attended, was enjoyed by the pupils and also raised valuable funds for the school.
My thanks to FBS for organising this and to Mrs Appleby and Mrs Langton for being in attendance.
My thanks to Mrs Langton and the following pupils for their part in the Family service last Sunday: "Jacob E, Laila E, Matthew H,
Tabby H. Yanah M, Kennedy D , Lara O, Millie S and Holly S.
Parents
Last week we met the new parents of the reception children who will be starting in September. It was an excellent
turn-out and my thanks to Mrs Pitman and Mrs Kick for talking about the FBS; to Mr Oliver for talking about the
governors; to Mrs Berryman and Mrs March for selling uniform; for Miss Pickford, Mrs Pickford and Mrs Langton
for being available to answer any parental queries and for Mrs Appleby for making a presentation about life in
Rabbits.
This Wednesday parents were invited to the Maths workshop which took place at Beckington school and was re-
scheduled from earlier in the term. I hope some of you were able to attend and that you found the workshop
useful. There was also a workshop to the staff of Frome schools, which should impact on our planning of
Numeracy for next year.
This week we had class and whole-school photographs taken on Monday. My thanks to Mrs Painter, Miss Lovejoy
and her daughter for organising this.
Finally, by the time you read this we hopefully would have enjoyed our annual Sports Day, which I know always
goes down well with the children, parents and grandparents. I hope everybody had a great time and that the
weather was kind to us.
Safeguarding
Watch out for the Summer
edition of the school magazine.
FBS News A massive thank you to the FBS for their generous cheque we received this week. Please watch this space with details
on how we have spent this cheque
and for the revamp of Rabbits
outside area!
Thanks to the staff and parents for
supporting the school disco, this raised a
lovely amount of money for the school.
Our next meeting will now be in the new school year in September 2018.
Fortnite – beyond the headlines In the last few days, the online multi-player game Fortnite has been in the news and on TV for a range of reasons. If Fortnite is popular in your home, or your child has friends playing the game and they want to join in, then you will want to know what risks it may present, and how to best support your child. We advise playing this 12 rated game with your child, so you can see what it’s all about., From this, you can begin to understand the areas that may concern you – time limits, contact from other players, the nature of the violence in the game. A great online guide is this one from MyKidsTime http://bit.ly/fortniteparents More advice from parents and practical tips on settings can be found at Ask About Games http://www.askaboutgames.com/parents-guide-to-fortnite-pegi-12 Epic Games will be releasing Fortnite for Android devices this summer, but have warned that some sites, including YouTube are promoting ‘early releases’ of Fortnite for Android, which are scams or spyware. No Android version of Fortnite will be available until the official release, so beware of sites offering ‘beta’ versions.
Car Park
Unfortunately we are still getting parents turn up to school before 3.10 and parking up. This causes real issues for the traffic on the road as the road is now regularly blocked with queues from 3ish when nothing can move until at least 3.15. Tuesday was horrendous with the swimming coach driver being blocked in because a parent needing to collect her child for the doctors was unable to park. This meant the coach driver was late getting to Selwood to collect his home run children. All resulting in several complaints and a lot of unnecessary frustration. Therefore it is with deep regret that we have had to take the decision to close the car park area until 3.10 and look at different ways we can do this. It is such a shame that we will now probably have to use much needed funds for this.
The children really enjoyed taking part in the preparations for the St
John’s Well dressing on the 26th May 2018. The older children busied
themselves making doves, with the younger children making anchors and
hands. It was fantastic to see the lovely end result. we hope you enjoy
our pictures. Please take the time to visit the town and see the display.
Massive thanks to Miss Pickford for securing us a Grant to revamp the
Squirrels outside area. The children have been having great fun and love using
it. Thanks also to Miss Jefferies for picking such lovely equipment. Watch out
for the school magazine when the children will be reporting on it!
In Rabbit class we have been learning about different
directions and using the correct positional language.
We had fun on the bikes following the map we had
drawn and giving each other directions to follow.
The school council arranged a colouring contest to promote
kindness within the school. The children were split into groups
with a member of each class in each group to ensure that kindness
was being spread around the entire school. The school council
were brilliant in presenting and monitoring the competition. They
were extremely pleased with the school's response.
The year 3 children took part in a
mini-Olympics festival at Selwood.
The sports ambassadors from
Selwood were as fantastic as ever.
The children had a wonderful time
completing the variety of sports that
were on offer.
The children in Rabbits Class were really lucky to visit Brakes farm. We had
a fantastic afternoon watching the cows being milked, sampling the cheese
and learning about a dairy farm. The farmer told us all about how he looks
after his cows, what they eat and where they sleep. We came back and
wrote about our favourite parts of the visit and what we had learnt.
Thank you for all your cheers and support given to the children. Also
a huge thanks to the FBS for keeping us all supplied with lovely Teas,
Coffees and cakes.
