Welcome

Supported by

Welcome to The Berry Theatre. Eastleigh Borough Council is proud to launch the opening season of our vibrant and exciting performance space in the heart of Hedge End. With 20,000 people within walking distance of the venue, we hope to become a central part of the Hedge End, West End and Botley community and beyond.

The theatre’s visionary facilities will add to and complement the abundance of existing arts provision within the Borough, including The Berry Theatre’s sister venue: The Point, one of the south’s leading venues for contemporary performance and the renowned Thornden Hall, noted as a centre for musical excellence and for its vital role in nurturing young talent.

Through our groundbreaking partnership with Hedge End Town Council and Wildern School alongside the support of a co-location grant from Partnership for Schools, The Berry Theatre is a shining example of our commitment to provide exceptional facilities for Borough

residents. Against the backdrop of a tough economic climate, our belief in the rewards and long-term benefits that the arts can bring to a community is reflected in the venue’s state-of-the-art amenities, giving local people the chance to experience top-class professional and community entertainment on their doorstep.

We would like to thank our partners for making this possible and hope you enjoy getting involved and visiting the theatre time and time again.

We are delighted to bring you an afternoon of FrEE film nostalgia as we take a look at the Borough of Eastleigh in times gone by.

We start our programme of events with a hand-picked selection of short-films. From footage of the Hampshire Boy Scouts war rally in 1912 to the story of the diesel ferry Hotspur’s short and ill-fated journey from Cowes, the Eastleigh Charter Celebrations and the Eastleigh Victory Walk in 1945.

Following this, we will show a stunning BFI National Archive film, Bombs at Teatime. Take a trip back in time to the 1940s.

As if fighting World War II wasn’t hard enough, British people had to put up with years of rationing, baths taken in a couple of inches of water and frequent outbreaks of head lice...

Bombs at Teatime is a portrait of life in Britain throughout one of the most extraordinary decades of our history. Wry, affectionate and surprising, the film documents a time of great austerity as Britain sought to retain its sanity in the shadow of war.

Jane Austen’s most celebrated female characters are brought to life in this powerful theatre adaptation. Austen speaks for the yearning heart as much now as in her own day... But just how much have things really changed for women since then?

In a bold revisiting, using nothing but the words of Austen herself, this one-woman show from Hampshire born Rebecca Vaughan beautifully illuminates the souls of Emma Woodhouse, lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and many more.

An amazing opportunity to see Blackeyed Theatre’s revival of its hugely acclaimed production from 2008, featuring five actor musicians who play, sing and act their way through one of the greatest satires ever written. Following sell-out runs on its national tour, this powerful celebration of France’s most popular singer, Edith Piaf, marks the approach of the 50th anniversary of her death.

Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 1940s and 50s. Her life was the stuff of legend, from her dramatic rise from Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Real life, however, was anything but ‘la vie en rose’. In her later years Piaf turned to drugs to find comfort and solace, never able to believe she was indeed loved by countless thousands of fans the world over - reflected in the size of her funeral in 1963 when so many lined the streets of Paris to bid her farewell.

In addition to a detailed narrative thread, the show features la vie en rose, Sous le ciel de Paris, Bal dans ma rue, Autumn leaves, Padam Padam, C’est merveilleux, l’accordéoniste, Non je ne regrette rien and many more.

“world-class… delivers Piaf’s songs with authority.” – Gilbert Biberian, composer

This exciting combination of live performance and film about the effect of music in wartime sees singer and broadcaster Isla St Clair, performing a selection of songs ranging from napoleonic times through to the popular hits that were born out of two world wars.

Joining Isla is film-maker Patrick King, giving a fascinating and humorous “behind-the-scenes” look at the making of their award-winning documentary films about music in war. Using film clips they illustrate how songs and music played an important part in people’s daily lives, boosting morale, for propaganda purposes or simply reminding people of better times.

This rich mix of song, film and comical out-takes makes for a light-hearted family show that is both informative and wonderfully entertaining.
