Our Mission Statement: The mission of Congregation Beth El is to foster a welcoming, diverse, and egalitarian community within the framework of Conservative Judaism, and to enrich the lives of its members through worship, learning, fellowship, celebration and tikun olam—healing the world.
President’s Message
Attention Beth El “Snowbirds”
Before leaving Connecticut for your warmer winter home, please be sure to contact the Beth El office so
that your Beth El mail can be sent to the correct address. It is also helpful if you can provide the date that
you expect to return to Connecticut.
Thank you, and be sure to send a postcard from your warm winter haven!
Fellow Congregants,
By the time you read this message December will be almost over and New Year's upon us. I hope everyone had a wonderful Chanukah spent with family and friends. As you know, in December Beth El shared a Friday night service with Beth Jacob, had our own Chanukah celebration with SSA students participating, and enjoyed Cantor Anna.
Our real estate committee has been very active this month exploring various options at Crossroads, including building out the basement or expanding the main level. We
have had engineers and architects give us opinions on what might work best for the space. In addition, committee members are visiting some potential properties for feasibility with the assistance of a realtor. I am optimistic that within the next few months we will have a better idea of whether we pursue the Crossroads option(s) or move on.
We also located our rolling table from the 660 sanctuary and have brought it to Crossroads along with our refrigerator, freezer, and other assorted items for the kitchen. Our sanctuary now faces East, and the window is covered, providing a more spiritual sense to the space. Dona is adjusting to the kitchen space, and we have been extremely lucky to have John Succo, a Crossroads congregant, helping Dona to set up and break down from events, as well as helping Judy Engel with all the "renovations" to the space. Many thanks to Sarah Rogovin and Rogovin Movers for finding so many of the items we had placed into long term storage and transporting everything to Crossroads. We have located our video streaming equipment as well, and are exploring how best to use it at Crossroads. It is my hope that all of these changes will provide Beth El members with a space they now feel is their own (see picture).
We welcome Ella Sackett to our office staff as our new co-office manager.
I wish each of you a happy, healthy, New Year!
Respectfully, Judi

Beth El Book Club - Thursday, January 24th
What is the basis for Judaism’s claim to the Land of Israel and how do we nego-
tiate this claim in the face of the Palestinian people’s contrasting narrative of
their relationship to the land and their desire for national sovereignty?
Join the Beth El Book Club at Shaw Street on Thursday, January 24th, 8:00 p.m. as we discuss
Yossi Klein Halevi’s much talked about memoire, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, one of
the most thought provoking tracts on the intractable struggle in
the Middle East in recent years.
Copies of the book are available at the Waterford Library under
“Beth El Book Club.” It is also available as an e-book.

JANUARY BIRTHDAYS
HAPPY JANUARY ANNIVERSARY
January Simcha Shabbat—Jan. 5th at Crossroads
The Simcha Shabbat has been a wonderful success and will continue on this year! Each month we will have one specially designated Shabbat when we will be reserving honors in the Torah service for congre-gants who are marking a special occasion during the month. We will also be serving a more elaborate Kiddush lunch that Shabbat and are asking those who are marking special occasions that month to make contributions toward the luncheon — and, of course, to come along with your family members and friends! If you are interested in being a co-sponsor of the January Simcha Shabbat, please contact the Beth El office, (860) 442-0418.
