Graham & Chris Nixon

Welcome

Welcome to the long awaited 3rd edition of ‘The Bigger Picture’ our company wide newsletter!

2013 has been an incredibly busy year for us and whilst we have covered the main highlights of our activity in the newsletter - we know that this just scratches the surface of the hard work which has been ongoing across the company and throughout the year.

From the new Depots in Warrington and Saudi Arabia to the £19m investment we’ve made in our products, we have taken on some major projects which, thanks to continued team work have shown across each and every one of our locations, we have managed to deliver successfully.

Using the latest software, we have recently contacted our customers to ask for their feedback on the products and service we provide. We’ll share the outcome of this survey in the New Year.

We’ve also seen some significant personnel changes this year. We’re pleased to appoint Terry King as Operations Director and announce a new regional sales structure which will see Karl Crick and Jim Jones promoted to Regional Sales Directors. Details of all new staff changes can be found on page 16.

Starting in March the newsletter will be moving to a shorter, quarterly news round up so if

Continuous Improvement Kaizen

Continuous Improvement KaizenAs our company is growing we are constantly looking at ways to improve our service to our customers.

With this in mind, we have been working with Ross International, a team of experts in the field of Lean Management who have helped some of the world’s leading businesses, such as Aggreko to improve their processes and become leaders in their fields.

Kaizen is a Japanese word for improvement or ‘change for the better’, and is a philosophy that focuses on continuous improvements. The Kaizen format is designed to engage the individuals who work within the processes being looked at to seek opinions on how best we can make improvements. It is an all inclusive approach to finding the very best solutions.

I am pleased to inform you that we have run our very first pilot ‘Kaizen’ project which is a new project management approach for us and involved input from colleagues in all departments affected by the project and from across the depot network.

Following weeks of analysis we identified a pilot project that looked at how we can best collect cash from our Customers by looking at root cause for delay in payments. This project looked at all areas involved in this, for example, contract and invoice accuracy, pricing, credit notes, invoice queries, damage charges, and so the list goes on.

An improvement plan has been created based on the findings and this is currently being implemented at a number of depots including CSO. A Kaizen folder has been created on the Nixon Network where all information is shared.

We look forward to updating you on the project as it progresses.

MCS version 4

By early 2014 all staff will be utilising MCS Version 4 - the new and improved hire software used across our business.

MCS Version 4

What are the benefits of MCS Version 4?• Improved reliability• Quicker operating system• Modernised and easy to navigate screens • Easy integration with new products from MCS

and other developers

A number of testing sessions have been held, which a high number of people have been required to participate in. We appreciate the time people have dedicated to the testing, which is so important for a successful implementation and we would like to thank everyone for their feedback.

Calling all Budding Photographers! If you’re a bit handy with a camera you could earn some extra cash by taking great pictures of our plant equipment on site. Ideally images should be taken with no less than a 5 mega pixel camera, we’re looking for some of our best plant equipment as images would be used in marketing material so correct decal placement and excellent condition of machinery is essential. We’ll pay £10 for each image we approve.

Please submit images to [email protected]

Happy Snapping!

Driver Certificate ofProfessional Competence By September 2014 all professional drivers are legally required to hold the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

To qualify for this a minimum of 35 hours JAUPT accredited training must be completed. To ensure all of our professional drivers have received the necessary training, Nixon Hire have teamed up with Driver Hire Nationwide to provide CPC training to deliver a full suite of modules. The training will be delivered in 3 ½ and 7 hour sessions in classroom and practical environments. It will cover a wide range of topics including:

• DriverHoursandWorkingRegulations

• DigitalTachographs

• FuelEfficientDriving

• UnderstandingHealth&Safety

• CustomerService

• LoadingandUnloading

The sessions will be delivered by Driver Hire CPC Consultants and by our own Practical Trainer, Gordon Hamilton who recently qualified to deliver CPC. With over 150 drivers eligible for CPC, delivering this training requires significant financial investment from Nixon Hire.

On completion of 35 hours training drivers will be sent a Drivers Qualification Card (DQC).

After September 2014 failure to carry and present the DQC may result in £1000 fine to both employee and employer. After September 2014, Nixon Hire have committed to deliver minimum 7 hours training per driver per year.

What happens next? Depot Managers will be contacted directly by Driver Hire and the Nixon Hire Transport department over the coming weeks to book delegates onto CPC courses.

New Depot Inspections

New Depot Inspections

2014 will bring a new round of depot inspections.

The depot inspection criteria has been recently reviewed to drive our current standards higher.

There have been significant changes made to ‘Corporate Image and Health, Safety & Environmental’ — a great example of where we want to ‘drive’ standards as a company.

Please ensure that you review ALL areas of the depot inspection criteria and put anything in place that you need to, to increase your depots compliance and in turn your score.

Please ensure that you are all discussing depot inspections in your weekly operations meetings and action plans are set and regularly reviewed to maximise your depots compliance — every role in your depot can impact the success in your depot inspections.

Depot Inspections are very important to our vision of making Nixon Hire efficient in every way...

Your Central Support Team;

Every area of the depot inspection has a process owner and we want you to succeed as much as you do, so should you require any advice, support or have any queries please contact us! Health, Safety & Environmental David Makepeace M: 07747 488 764 E: [email protected]

The summer months bring nice weather (well this year anyway!) and for us the peak in our events season.

Our events team work incredibly hard to ensure that even our busiest months for toilet operations run smoothly — considering that this includes large concerts, festivals and sporting events, this is no mean feat!

We are delighted to announce that Nixon Hire were successful in securing the contract to supply accommodation units for the world famous half marathon, the Great North Run. This was the first time we supplied accommodation units to the event and our distinctive yellow cabins were used as offices, medical facilities, meeting points and storage areas for the event organisers Nova International. Nixon Hire also once again supplied the portable toilets for the event. Providing facilities at the start line, throughout the 13.1 mile course, the finish line and the fringe events taking place. We supplied a total of

over 700 portable toilet units!

New PDAs for our Toilet Division and Paragon Software

New PDA and ParagonSoftwareEmbracing the latest in PDA technology, Nixon Hire have rolled out state of the art Motorolla MC65 devices across our toilet division. Nixon Hire have used PDAs for a number of years but as well as the new handsets being much more robust, the Motorolla technology allows us to integrate our internal IT infrastructure in a much more effective way. Using our existing Paragon system we can schedule and implement the most efficient way to service our toilets which are out on hire with our customers. The introduction of the new PDAs will not only help us plan and operate the quickest service route, they are also a major benefit to the quality of information we can give our customers. Due to live information being relayed from our systems to and from the drivers, we can

give a precise arrival time, identify access problems, implement route changes as well as providing instant proof of service. With a view to our internal systems eventually becoming paperless, the devices also help towards this goal as they cut out paperwork all together - everything is stored and sent via the handset. The new implementation of the new PDAs will be completed by the end of 2013.

Nixon Hire has modernised its portable toilet service routing and scheduling with multi depot planning software from Paragon Software Systems.

Nixon Hire uses the system for daily dynamic planning of its fleet of special service vehicles across 27 routes from 12 depots. The software helps improve customer service by identifying the most efficient route, monitoring KPI performance and importantly saves time and labour on maintaining facilities and accommodation units across northern England and Scotland.

Brand New Welfarevans added to the Fleet

Brand New Welfarevans added to the FleetAfter the successful introduction of Citröen vans into the fleet in 2012, we are continuing to work with the Town Centre (Sunderland) dealership as the main supplier of our Welfarevans and have ordered 80 new vehicles.

Nicola Hellewell commented “Nixon Hire have operated Welfarevans in the fleet for a number of years now and using this experience we are working with a bespoke fitter to customise the vans to meet the high demands placed on the vehicles by our customers. We have now received 40 of the new vans, with a further 50 to be delivered.

Nixon Hire’s Welfarevans provide a flexible approach to short term site accommodation and deliver comfortable and cost effective welfare facilities. The vans include a canteen equipped with a microwave, running hot water, a full size sink as well as a unisex toilet and drying facilities.

Highlights of the van’s safety features include; an anti hi jack system, ABS as standard, emergency escape hatch, independent central heating, heavy duty anti slip flooring in tool area, roof and window ventilation, reverse bleeper and sensors, a towbar, fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. Our Welfarevans also have an M1 crash tested floor, conforming to relevant EC Directives and benefit from access to a national vehicle support network.

Welfarevans are co-ordinated by Nixon Direct.

Charity Update

Charity Update

Nixon Hire’s chosen charity for 2013 is Cancer Research UK. Our current fundraising total is over £30,000.00 which is an incredible achievement.

Ben Nevis Charity Challenge Huge congratulations to all of the people who took part in the Ben Nevis Charity Challenge climb on Saturday 21st September! Everyone did amazingly well and a great time was had by all (discounting the aches and pains)! Some pictures have been added to the Nixon Network homepage but you can also view our full album on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/NixonHire

Charity rubber duck race on the River Tweed! On Saturday 13th July, our Berwick Depot held a rubber duck race on the River Tweed which was a fantastic success!

We raised a grand total of £1,600 and we would like to thank all of our customers, suppliers and staff who helped make the day such a success and raise a fantastic amount of money for Cancer Research UK.

Nixon Hire and Kilmac Commit to Beat Cancer

Nixon Hire have also unveiled a very unique excavator, all in the name of raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research UK. The machine is kindly on loan from Volvo. What makes this charity excavator different — apart from its colour — is that ALL of the revenue generated from the hire will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The machine has been hired for 12 months to Kilmac.

What’s New on the Nixon Network?

Permission levels added to allow folder restrictions

Sub categories created to make navigation within departments easier

To make the Nixon Network easier to use and become the company information hub, we’ve made some major changes.

Documents can be uploaded into multiple folders

Online forms

Online FormsIn order to reduce the amount of paper we use throughout the company, we are starting to move suitable forms and documents online. By this we mean that a company form will be accessed, completed, submitted and recorded online via the Nixon Network. Once a form is submitted the data is collated in a database behind the scenes allowing the data to be processed and analyzed.

The forms which are currently available to access on the Nixon Network are:

• Hotelsbookings• Decal&signagerequests• Losthire• Missingplant• Taxrequests

Contact: Louise Coulter, Marketing Manager, [email protected]

Access the Nixon Network at intranet.nixonhire.co.uk

Your Nixon Network login is the same as your PC.

Using the lost hire form as an example, this form captures all the ‘who, what, when and why?’ in relation to a lost hire. As the form feeds straight into a database it allows us to look for trends in the data and use the information to help us plan future CAPEX expenditure as well as equipment allocation to each depot. The online forms will replace the existing hard copy documents.

Enhancing the Brand

Enhancing the BrandCorporate Uniform

Our branding initiatives have focused on developing a customer perception of Nixon Hire to be a professional, modern and consistent organisation. The new uniform will further develop our brand image. We hope that colleagues will feel proud and happy to be wearing the new uniform, which is a huge step-up in quality. We ask that they wear it at all times during working hours. We want the customer to experience our team as well presented and unified, which will give them confidence that we will deliver for them. The roll out programme is now complete and at a cost of over £25,000 we’re sure you will agree this is a significant investment by the company.

Ordering Uniform: Ongoing OrdersDepots will manage their own uniform budget for new starters and replacement items. A price grid has been set-up on MSC with codes and prices.

Stores will not hold stock. Arco will be holding floor stock but you are advised to be proactive with ordering, especially for new starters.Expenditure will be monitored to identify any excessive ordering.

Old UniformManagers need to take responsibility to ensure that no-one wears the old uniform. Please ask that all employees return old uniform which will need to be disposed of.

Nixon Hire Sales Online

Parts SalesWe are delighted to be working with Bomag to offer an online enquiry form for genuine Bomag parts.

The enquiry form is hosted on our website and when the customer submits the enquiry form, we receive a copy but the details are sent to Bomag to respond to. This means that we don’t have to worry about stock, out of hours requests and in depth technical knowledge on the serviceable parts.

We are keen to expand the range of suppliers that we work with to offer this service and we are in discussion with a number of companies about this.

Used Equipment Sales Nixon Hire are now using Mascus to sell our used plant equipment. Mascus operate in a similar way to AutoTrader and are perceived as global leaders in advertising used plant equipment with large companies such as Volvo also using their online platform.

We made the decision to not only utilise their website to promote our stock, but also to work with them to ensure this information is consistent with the information on our website. We have seen an encouraging number of enquiries so far, particularly from customers abroad.
