Commodore’s report January 2013

Greetings,

Happy New Year! December was an event-filled month, and there are plenty of members to be acknowl-edged for their work. First off, Captain Carol Soffel and her crew did a fantastic job of decorating the clubhouse for the holiday season. Appreciation and thanks to Captain Larry Dubia and his crew for setting up the tree. At the QCYC WIC Luncheon on Dec 6, I personally received numer-ous compliments from our visit-ing WIC guests on how beautiful our decorated club looked, espe-cially our warm and inviting fire-place blazing away during the WIC luncheon. I think it really set the mood and holiday spirit at the club. ViCe Commodore’s report

H appy New Year! We had a wonderful holiday and hope you did as well.

In thinking back to December, we had a fantastic heartwarming turn-out for our Seafair Special People’s Holiday Cruise, with 108 special guests. Thank you, skippers, dock elves and helpers, Bill Field, Karin McLean, Chuck Gould & team, our special Santas and of course Paul Grimm and the famous Seafair Clowns. It was a fun, safe, well orga-nized event you all made QCYC proud. Isn’t it all about those special smiles & gifting a cruise memory that will last a lifetime?

The Chet Gibson Lighted Boat Parade was another well attended event and the weather was dry with little wind. Thanks to the team-work of several members, including parade leaders, turn boat volun-teers and the SPD Harbor Patrol escort through construction waters, we again demonstrated it takes a village to have a parade.

AccountAbilities updAte: docKs

Dock 1 Expansion: The permitting for the Dock 1 extension is moving through review by city, state, and DNR agencies.

Dock Maintenance: Safety reminder: as winter progresses docks become slippery: prevent falls with de-icer and slow deliberate steps with non-slip boots/shoes.

The working committee has been replacing draft stops under the docks as well as surface planking. We could use more help — no expe-rience required. Thanks to Art Mauldin, Mitch Garton & Pat Dore for your expertise and leadership. Give Pat a call if you’re interested.

Marina Fire Compliance: You may have noticed a large shipping crate at the lobby entrance. It contains the 1st smoke ventilation unit. This is a 4ft×4ft×4ft skylight sent for our inspection and evaluation prior to contractor installation. The size of the vent is proportionate to the roof square footage ratio as determined by fire spread formulations. We will require 90 vents this year and 90 next year.

House

The House Committee reports that carpet seams continue to separate, causing a trip hazard. Please note duct tape across seams to increase safety until carpet is replaced next year. The bridge and AAC are work-ing together to coordinate interior projects.

Ladies, you may have noticed the ceiling patch in the lobby lavatory due to a recent flooding on the 1st floor. Upon inspection of the copper pipes, significant system wide erosion in the hot water system has been identified, with 70% thinning in some areas. Leaks with water damage will increase over time. Re-piping the hot water system has been recom-mended to the bridge by the professionals. We will ask for three bids to do the plumbing and our House Committee will finish the drywall.

Finally, as 2013 is upon us, you will be reading this as January approaches with a much antici-pated resumption of IPBA log rac-ing season. Good luck, captains!

Remember January 25th – February 3rd, the Seattle Boat Show is coming. This is a major opportu-nity to highlight our premier yacht club to the greater Seattle boat-ing community. Sign up for booth participation, feature our club and have a great time with other QCYC members. It’s a hoot!

On January 11-13, we will be at Winslow hosting the Grand 14 Officer Winter Cruise-In when we roast the commodore and other porpoises as they continue in the final year of the chairs – it’s crazy fun!

Whew! Laurean and I are really looking forward to Martini Madness at the end of the month. You take care out there!

rear Commodore’s report

The Christmas holidays are over and the New Year’s

celebrations are but a memory. That means it’s Boat Show time! Membership Chairman Chris Benson has secured a prime spot for our Queen City Yacht Club booth at the Seattle Boat Show. He has planned all the displays but is missing an important ingredi-ent to make the booth a success: members to crew the booth, pro-mote the club and campaign for new members. Please plan to vol-unteer. The perks are priceless (free

admission to the show). There are sign-up sheets everywhere.

I would like to welcome our newest members, sworn in on Wednesday, 12/12/12:

H   Joe Sims. His wife Lisa could not attend the meeting but we’ll give her the oath of membership at the very first opportunity.

H   Richard and Jeanne Firth.

H   I am pleased to announce that Bill Buller has withdrawn his request for withdrawal. He submitted a formal request to the Board to withdraw his withdrawal and a unanimous vote was cast approving his request. Welcome back Bill!

As your Rear Commodore I am responsible for grounds, membership, security and recep-tion. I take my responsibilities seriously and encourage all mem-bers to contact me with concerns, questions, suggestions and sup-port. The McGrew crew is here for you.

regatta power reportFirst oF the season raCe, Jan 18, 19 & 20, 2013 The QCYC FOS race will be held on the weekend of January 18th thru 20th. It is a great opportunity to learn about or even try running in your boat. We will have classes for a refresher or for anyone new to the sport. (see below). We will also need observers, who will ride along on Saturday the 19th in a racer’s boat and record the time of day about 7 or 8 times. It’s an easy job and a good way to see how the sport is done. And you get a free lunch and dinner. Contact Bob Lindal to sign up for the classes or to be an observer.

prediCted log raCing Classes We will again offer classes in January. The classes will start with the basics and proceed through the steps in laying out the race, cal-culations, currents, running the course and the use of the computer with demonstrations of Excel cal-culation programs and Coastal Explorer, Nobeltec (and other) charting programs. Weekend boat timing demonstration(s) will also be offered at a convenient time. You are also encouraged to sign up as an observer for the First of the Season race to see how a race is run

or sign up as a racer. Use the classes and skull session to plan your race. Meetings will be at 6:30 PM. H   Thu Jan 3 – Layout, Tactics,

outstation report

Unfortunately, even dur-ing the holiday season theft

can be a problem! The Bainbridge Island Police were dismayed to find all three of the polished stain-less steel 4-blade props (about $500 each) missing from the police boat moored at our outstation dock. It’s a felony to disable a police vehi-cle, and there is a $1,000 reward offered for information related to the theft. (Not surprisingly, the police and we are fairly sure who rowed over in the middle of the night and pilfered them.)

Fortunately, the police had spare props and installed them immediately so they can respond to marine emergencies. And until locks are installed on the props, they have the police boat tied up a little closer to our boat. Police dog Edie now has a special job to keep an eye out for “bad guys” (not just Jess and Jimmy), as well as keeping the heron and otters off the docks and the ducks and geese off the lawn. She loves her jobs!

January will find the outsta-tion busy, as past commodores from the Grand Fourteen find their way to Winslow on January 4-6. This is always a well-attended event, and the docks and parking

lot will be full. On January 11-13 the docks will be full again, as the current officers from the Grand Fourteen arrive for a weekend of fun. Members visiting by boat may find themselves rafting off another boat, so don’t say you haven’t been warned.

There are some plans in the works to improve the galley at the outstation. For those who have had the opportunity to wash dishes in the galley, you can understand why we want to make the sinks higher. There will also be some sig-nificant improvements in the cabi-netry, and the plan is to accomplish all of this during the quiet months of February and March.

Happy New Year!—Barb Wood

doCks Committee

M ajor winter work on the docks will be more limited

this year. We’ve identified three locations on Dock 1 that need some significant rebuild work by our contractor. It’s crucial that we stay ahead of the decay before it rises up ahead of us.

We’re also arranging with our contractor to have their divers inspect a sampling of our underwa-ter fastenings and structure. There are steel I-Beams, channel, chains, straps and more that tie together some of the piling and make the entire structure stable and upright. This substantial steelwork was installed mostly in 1997 as repairs to the significant damage done our marina in the great snows and freezing rains of around December 27, 1996. We’re due to get the fasten-ings on all of this nearly invisible structure inspected.

Did you see the progress with our new safety ladders? They look terrific, though I’ve been thinking that safety elevators might be even better! There’s been a great deal of

progress and Mitch Garton and Mike Cochran are to be thanked ever so much for that. So are the Tarettes, who have so generously and repeatedly shown their care and commitment to safety in our club. We are experimenting with several different non-skid concepts on the rungs of the ladders. We are aware that marine growth can ren-der them slippery and risky.

Ray Huggins has taken on the project of making our water pipes even more resistant to damage from freezing. New members: we never turn off the water on these docks, and everyone should be aware that turning off the water during freezing weather is likely to freeze and destroy all of the plumbing. Please don’t mess with the main valves! Instead, our water flows on a controlled basis the entire length of each dock. Water is released from control valves that maintain the temperature of the water above freezing. It’s all auto-matic, except for cleaning and ser-vicing and just checking that things are working when it does freeze. Don’t be surprised by flowing water at the ends of the docks. That just means that temperatures have fallen to near freezing. Hoses left threaded on hose bibs in freezing weather add a lot of stress to this control system and end up consum-ing more water and adding risk of freeze-up. It’s wintertime: please disconnect and drain your hoses. Ray is installing some redundancy in the system to give us extra pro-tection from very expensive freeze damage to plumbing.

Planking work continues and the committee has begun discus-sion of some alternative deck-ing systems that might one day be a practical alternative to wood planking. Thanks to Chuck Gould and the gang and to the occa-sional other members who put in a day sawing, carrying and driv-ing screws for progress!

Work parties: breakfast and discussion at 8:30 AM the sec-ond Saturday of every month. Upcoming: Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 9.

Committee Meetings: 6:00 PM the fourth Tuesday of the month. Upcoming: December meeting (Rescheduled from Christmas Day) Jan. 8, Jan 22, Feb. 26, March 26.

Chowder & Cheer Cruise The Chowder & Cheer mini-cruise & social event at Chinook’s on Salmon Bay at Fisherman’s Terminal was held on Sunday, December 16th. Based on member feedback, it was a big success. Even though it was a bit “moist” outside, we still had a great turnout. Thirty-four members arrived by land and by sea and “took over” the marina view lounge at Chinook’s. Past Commodore Paul McTaggart pro-vided entertainment for the group

We watched in amazement as a steady proces-sion of at least a dozen members emerged and joined us! Most peo-ple stuck to the “chowder” part of Chowder & Cheer but several members could not resist a hearty breakfast plate. The Seahawks put everyone in an even better mood by crushing the Bills while we watched and cheered. We want to thank everyone for coming out and sharing good food, good fun and good times with us!

iCe Breaker Cruise

The First Annual QCYC Ice Breaker Cruise to Poulsbo will be held – Friday – Sunday, January 11th-13th. An ad appeared in the London Times in 1913: “Men wanted for hazardous journey.

Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, con-stant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success. Ernest Shackleton.” 5,000 men applied, 27 were selected. This was the start of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Their story of survival under brutal conditions is legendary. More importantly for QCYC, their accomplishment of one of the greatest feats of navi-gation in maritime history is the inspiration for what we hope will become an annual event for Queen City Yacht Club. We’re calling this event the First Annual Ice Breaker Cruise to Poulsbo, The Norwegian town of Poulsbo is the perfect des-tination, because the whaling sta-tion on South Georgia Island was Norwegian too! The whaling sta-tion is where Shackleton and 5 of his men navigated to, covering over 800 nautical miles in an open,

What’s coming up with the Tarettes?

There’s nothing like the holidays to realize how lucky one is to be enveloped by family and warm friends near and far. It’s a time to surrender to the many, many good-will festivities, as well as, a time to reinforce what we all wish for: Peace, Love and Joy.

With that in mind, Happy New Year! The Tarettes have just completed the second quar-terly general meeting. Per our by-laws, our members pres-ent voted on several important issues which have been the focus of our open board meetings since September. The proposed Tarette Archival Committee is now permanent and our third year philanthropic donations to The

Treehouse and to the Bainbridge School Foundation have been approved and will remain intact until such time as our member-ship votes to change them. Many other long range issues continue to be aptly researched and con-sidered, also.

Any QCYC member is always invited to attend our Tarette meetings. Our next will be an open board meeting on Wednesday, January 23, at 5:30, and yes, the club’s dinner fol-lows with the QCYC meeting at 7:30. We will be selecting a Nominating Committee for next year’s Tarette bridge. Come share your ideas!

And, in February! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 27. The dinner before the QCYC General Meeting will

be a little different that night. The QCYC bridge and the Tarette bridge will come together to host a huge CRAB FEED at the clubhouse! We are talkin’ more than you could eat pre-picked crab, with drawn butter, garlic bread, salads, your own crab bib (you’ll need it!), and a sinful dessert, too. This outland-ish event will be a fund raiser to benefit the reformation and new interior decoration of the clubhouse. What better way for the QCYC family to enjoy each other, than for the benefit of us all?! Let’s do it! The crab is ordered and more details are to come, so, stay tuned.
