Dear Parents and Friends, Congratulations to all the children involved with the ANZAC Day March and service at the Shrine on Monday. It was a beautiful day and the children represented the School with dignity and reverence. We were so incredibly proud of them. It was lovely to see so many families gathered at the tree service at the Shrine so thank you for making it such a special event Following on from the moving events on Monday, one of our Year 2 students, Ruby Jesudason, has written this lovely piece about what ANZAC Day means to her. The Shrine of Remembrance The ANZAC soldiers fought in the war for us. They are still special to us and from that day on we remember them but unfortunately in Gallipoli most of them died. My great grandfather fought in World War II however he was lucky and survived and returned home. He lived in Martinborough in New Zealand. He died when he was ninety four years old just before I was born so I never got to meet him, but my granny lives in his house and I often go there on holidays. Sometimes we go for walks and see where he was buried. Granny has many pictures of my great grandfather. He has lots of medals. He must have been a good soldier and special. Such a gorgeous reflection. Parent Information Evening This morning we held a NAPLAN information session for parents of children in Years 3 and 5 prior to the upcoming tests in May. I hope that those of you who attended found this useful. Next Tuesday 3 May, we have the first of our Parent Education Evenings. We have a guest presenter joining us to talk about Technology in Schools so we hope that you can join us at 7.00pm in the Music Room.
School Photos The children’s school photos arrived yesterday and will make their way home over the next day or so. If you have any issues with your child’s photos or need to place an additional order, please contact Cindy Jackman in the office for assistance. Happy travels to our Year 6 children who are heading off on Monday to Canberra. Enjoy the weekend, Sandra Holland
NAPLAN - The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy The NAPLAN Assessments for Year 3 and Year 5 pupils will be held on Tuesday 10th May, Wednesday 11th May and Thursday 12th May 2016. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday 13 May 2016. A NAPLAN information session was held this morning and I have attached parent information sheets to this newsletter for those who were unable to attend. Sue Moir Head of Individual Differences
Mother Linda Dear Parents and Friends, How blessed we have been with warm autumnal days three weeks into this new term! Our school days are busy and I am surrounded by children who want to make a contribution to lessons and chapel services. The photographs taken after our ANZAC service capture the joy that flows from participation. Next week I will begin gathering the group of children who would like to prepare for First Communion. While I have a couple of names confirmed by parents, there are other children who have expressed their interest. I have explained to them that they need to discuss this with you. Do send through an email if you would like your child to be included. I will meet with them each week as we work through a little booklet called Welcome To The Lord’s Table. I will work around other lunchtime commitments and find a suitable time. The group will be admitted to communion during the 10 am Eucharist on Sunday 29th of May. I look forward to hearing from you. Blessings, Linda [email protected]
Music News - A Musical Note
Danielle Arcaro – Music Director
We have a number of exciting musical events coming up early this term which the children have been busy preparing for. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra May 3rd - Prep to Grade 2 will be visiting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to hear their Classic Kids Concert “Crazy Creatures’. An interactive music adventure inspired by the children’s books of Jonathan Long and Korky Paul. The children will meet the heroes from The Duck with No Luck and A Cat Called Scratch on the big screen and share their adventures via this fun-and-laughter-filled concert. May 5th - Grades 3-5 will be introduced not only to the orchestra, but a host of big and bold musical characters. These include Dukas’ famous Sorcerer’s Apprentice (made legendary by Mickey Mouse, in Fantasia) and a wacky audience participation piece called ‘Bamboozled’. The program includes works by Beethoven, Rossini and Copland. Australian Brandenburg Orchestra The Chapel Choir has been rehearsing very hard for their upcoming performances with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra on May 7th and May 8th at the Melbourne Recital Centre. This concert called ‘Mozart Requiem:100 Voices’ features the voices of children and includes a selection of the most beautiful, extraordinary music of the Renaissance and Baroque, climaxing with the famous ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ from Handel’s Messiah. It is an incredible honour and opportunity for our children to sing with such a world class orchestra and I have been very impressed with the maturity and enthusiasm with which they have stepped up to the challenge of music making at this level. Last week the children joined members of the Australian Boys Choir, Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School Choir and Melbourne Grammar School Choir in an intense (and intensely funny) rehearsal that really pushed them to new heights. Our choristers were incredible in both their behaviour and singing and there were many ‘teary eyed moments’ when we all (those singing and those listening) experienced sheer beauty (and it was only a rehearsal). We as a school should all feel very, very proud of our Chapel Choir and of their very talented, dedicated, hard-working Choir Master, Mr Fulcher. Paul Dyer (ABO Director) says: "Children’s voices were part of the musical landscape in the Renaissance and Baroque. It is time to bring that glorious sound back to the Brandenburg stage and we are going to do it in a huge way."
Student Achievements I would like to congratulate Tabitha Burge, Alicia Podiono and Alec Smith on their recent successes in AMEB exams. All have put in a lot of work preparing for the exams and have achieved fantastic results! Congratulations also goes to Holly Hockings who is the first student to achieve her ‘Black Belt’ in our ‘Recorder Karate’ program. Congratulations and thank you to Jason Huang, Tabby Burge, and Timmy Lew for playing us in and out of assembly recently. Teacher performances Our cello teacher Mr Harris will be performing a recital on the weekend and I would encourage you to go and hear him. His flier is attached. Sports News

Better Buddies Leadership Program
Hello Everyone!
Camp Australia in partnership with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation created our exclusive Better Buddies Leadership program to help children connect by learning from each other and build self-confidence through our Leadership Program.
The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity that focuses on keeping children safe from violence and bullying. Their Better Buddies framework is a whole-school initiative designed to create friendly and caring school communities where bullying is reduced.
Each week, we will be choosing two older children to act as ‘buddy leaders’ to support and mentor the younger children here at OSHC.
Parents don’t forget that you need to inform me to whether your Child will be attending aftercare, this is very important for the safe running of the program. You can do this anytime by logging onto our website (www.campaustralia.com.au) or you can catch me on the mobile (0423 795 219)
We hope that you all have a great week.
