HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
The Boat House was used by the Royal Engineers between
1790 and 1930. The central figure in Gravesend's history -
Colonel Charles George Gordon (before he was a General)
used the build ing to teach the poorest boys of Gravesend to
read and write and then obtain employment - a way of
breaking a circle o f property that existed in the town.
Colonel Gordon also had his private office here during the
construction of the Thames Defence Forts between 1865
and 1871.
The building became part of the Sailors' Home in 1886 and
the National Sea School in 1918 but was sold to the St
John's Ambulance Service in the 1960s.
After they vacated, vandals rendered the historic office
derelict and it would have been demolished except for thirty
years of campaigning by local builder, John Wadsworth (of
J & A fame). His sons renovated the property over many
years to the beautifully restored home we see today
retaining many original and historic features.
The current owner purchased the property in 2002 and
became the first private resident in the building's 230 year
history.
