May means one thing for sure across the Maranoa and that is show time. No matter what your passion, there is a section at the local show where you can let it shine. The local circuit will bring together the regions best bakers, gardeners, sheep and wool growers, cattle producers, equestrians and even beer-makers, in fierce but friendly competition. If you’re not the competitive type, there are a myriad of fun activities planned for the Wallumbilla, Roma and Mitchell Shows to keep the whole family entertained. On May 3-4 Wallumbilla Show will come alive with sideshow alley favourites the Dodgem Cars and Big Kahuna Fun Park. Barynard Babies Petting zoo will also be there alongside, market stalls, displays and fireworks. Ian Jackson and local talent Russell Dewhurst will provide tunes for the crowd in the late afternoon and evening. Program available at www.wallumbillashow.com. Cooking devotees can join renowned ‘foodie genius’ Alison Alexander for cooking demonstrations at the Roma Show on May 10-11. Roma Show’s Friday Men’s Breakfast will feature singing-diplomat Fred Smith and is not to be missed. John Ey, a Member of the Roma Historical Car Club offered to assist Members of the Roma Bowls Club to be involved in the Easter in the Country Parade on the back of his fully restored truck. All aspects of the Bowling club were represented - Trish Ferguson (Ladies Bowls Club), Stella Palmer ( Junior Girls ), Patrick Ferguson, Grant Sharpe and Russell Todd ( Men’s Bowls Club) and David Bowden (Bowling Arm ). Brett and Sharon Roberts’ exhibition ‘Re:Place’ is coming to Roma’s Walk of Art from May 2 until June 22, 2019. Re:Place is an exhibition of photography and painting by Brett and Sharon Roberts in response to a change of place. Brett is a photographer with a passion for light and the
natural environment. Sharon's paintings express colour relationships, gesture and spirit. Artworks are of the Maranoa and surrounds, so make sure to head on down and see if you can pick out some familiar scenes. The official opening will take place on Saturday May 4 at 4pm and will be accompanied by a talk by the artists.

The Roma Bowls Club hosted the Invitation Fours Event recently. Bowlers from Mitchell, Surat and Injune came to enjoy the pleasant weather and social atmosphere. The Winners were Robert Hammond’s Roma Team that included Paula Connolly, Jock Douglas, David Bowden and Russell Todd. Runners Up were Arthur Murray’s Surat Team. First Round Winners were Bil Taylor’s Team from Roma and the Second Round Winners were Col Jackson’s Team from Injune. Mitchell Bowls Club will be the next club to host their Invitation Fours. Over the Easter Weekend, Roma hosted a Pairs Cash Event on Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. Dennis O’Toole from Bowls Queensland also conducted a Bowling Arm coaching demonstration between 9 and 12 noon on Easter Saturday. Results to come in the next Bulletin.
Roma Raphael and Maranoa Freemason Lodges along with Corona Lodge from Wallumbilla hosted a visit from four Brisbane Lodge Members and their wives. The Lodges represented were Thespian, Myora, Bayside Daylight and Logan Beenleigh. The Brisbane Freemasons were returning to Brisbane after visiting Charleville and Augathella Lodges, where they
attended the Installation of new Office Bearers. There was another reason for the trip to Western Queensland. The Lodges had collected $10,000 to be spent in towns affected by drought. They took great satisfaction in being able to give to country communities.
The Ladies from the Muckadilla Community Association prepared a morning tea for Members of the Roma Community Men’s Shed and some Associates. This was a special occasion to thank the Roma Community Men’s Shed for repairing the Lions and Roma Men’s Shed shade canopies damaged in a big whirly wind at Muckadilla on Remembrance Day and the Dedication of the Harry Murray VC Wall. The
canopies were repaired by John Aisthorpe, Alec Waldron and Carin Thompson. President Mike Stuhmcke mentioned that it was good to see two Community Organisations working so well together.

On Saturday April 13, an exhibition with a difference opened at the Mitchell on Maranoa Gallery. Wicked Wire is an inspirational exhibition of what four country women, Sue Pukallas, Donna Sutton from Bymount, Ros Ware and Janelle Rook from Mungallala, can do when they find the time, pick up a pair of pliers and battle with whatever old wire, netting, tin and bits and pieces they find laying around their sheds. Every rural property would have old rusty wire whether it be barb or plain, somewhere. In a pile behind the shed, down a gully, under the shearing shed. Add to that some old rusty tin, some scrap metal and there you have it....... a unique piece of art. Among the many guests from around the region were people from Townsville, Augathella, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast. It’s a down to earth exhibition well worth a look. Open April 13th to Saturday until May 25th Next exhibition will be Kenniff Country Quilters annual Quilt Show opening 6th June.
From 1970 through to 2019 locomotive 761 stood in Mitchell Memorial Park. She was built in 1927 as part of a group of 227 engines that formed the C17 Class. Her early years were spent in Townsville working heavy freight trains before a transfer to Rockhampton Round House. Here she worked out to Winton on Livestock trains and down to Gladstone with loaded coal trains. The final 10 years of its working life were spent at Ipswich working the coal lines most frequently the Bundamba to Redbank loop line.
During this time the locomotive was fitted with a second sand dome and a larger rear headlight so that she was able to more easily able to operate going backwards She is now leaving Mitchell and heading to Ipswich to get restored to her mighty glory. The Mitchell Police are urging parents and children to remember the rules and requirements surrounding seatbelts and be mindful to where children should sit in a vehicle. Remember wear your seatbelts every time you are in your vehicle even if you are only traveling a few kilometres. Most road crashes happen close to home because this is where you drive most frequently. Parents and guardians make sure everyone in your car is safely restrained before moving your vehicle and making sure your seatbelts and child restraints are correctly fitted. The penalties for not having your child correctly restrained is $391 fine and 3 demerit points. Seatbelts save lives,

Dunkeld Pony Club members and Woodlands attendees, past, present and future beat a path down the Mitchell-St George Road on Saturday April 13th to celebrate 50 years of Woodlands Pony Club Camp. The organising committee, despite the best efforts of a whirly-wind, managed to create a magical setting for the evening with fairy-lights and candles. There was a beautiful roast meal, live music and generous raffle prizes to be won. The fabulous woolshed bar got a good workout from the thirsty parents and visitors. The ever-reliable Bill Saul took on MC duties for the night. Dunkeld Pony Club President Judie Gwydir thanked everyone for their attendance. Original Woodlands Camp-goer Clayton Sylvester said a few words, and shared some not-so-fond memories of the sand burrs that are still a danger to kids who take a tumble. Clayton then had the honour of cutting the delicious anniversary cake. Woodland’s current owner Ken Symes also spoke and MC Bill Saul thanked him for his generous support of the camp in recent years. The amenities at Woodlands are a real credit to Ken and Dee’s ongoing hard work and much appreciated by all. Outside of the anniversary festivities, all the riders had a great weekend learning from talented instructors on the Saturday before putting it into practice during Sunday’s competition. Congratulations to all involved in another successful Woodlands Camp!
The Branch recently catered lunch for Quilts In The Woolshed at Springhill Country Craft Retreat. Funds raised from this will support the QCWA State Disaster Fund. Members also created a display called “Recycle It” and demonstrated some techniques with recycling and fabric painting. There was a wonderful response to the Breast Cancer Bags and Quilts of Love. Thank you to all who supported these very worthwhile causes. We will provide morning Tea for the Amby Anzac Day service at the Amby Hall. This year we will not be having a function for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea with members supporting other town's functions. Amby has only had an inch of rain for the year and we are finding it difficult to get support for any function that we have, most probably due to the drought and lack of people in our area.
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is nearly here! Mark Sunday May 26, 2019 on your calendar and head down to the QCWA Hall in Cambridge Street. There will be lots of stalls and of course a mouth-watering morning tea. All go to the Queensland Cancer Council. See you there!

The Jeff Dean Memorial Red Day was once again held at Bymount on March 12 with Red’s Dad Vern a very special guest. Vern also celebrated his 81st birthday on the day and his attendance was made possible by Loretta Johnson and her dedicated team of ambos. The yabby and toad (won by Russell Coight) races were popular drawcards as were a range of family games including pack attack, tug-o-war, drought ski race, flat bowls, hour glass shake, dingo trap throwing and the sponge bath relay, with red shirts being the dominant colour.
Auction items were donated by generous members of the community with many items handmade. Also up for grabs was half a side of pig, half a side of lamb, farm produce, tyres and beer! The auction was expertly conducted by representatives from TopX and Landmark. The Red Day team would like to thank all their supporters (including new sponsor Senex Energy) and everyone who turned up to make the day so special.
In sporting news Injune Tennis kicked off the year with seven teams lining up for the autumn season, under the directorship of new president Sandy Duncan. Tennis was played over two nights each week with Jayden Wilson’s team taking out the Grand Final in a playoff with Campbell Allen’s team.
Injune Golf is also heading into a busy season with Canadian Foursome Championships, Bisque Bogey, Mixed 4bbb championships and the Roma Carnival all to be held in May.
Showing in May at the Injune Creek Gallery will be a selection of landscapes by Brisbane artist Noel Miller. Noel is the resident artist for the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve and his paintings cover a range of landscapes from the Antarctic to the Outback. Especially for the Injune exhibition he has created a series of drawings by burning gunpowder on to watercolour papers and, with little control over the results, a new collection of landscapes has sprung to life.

Injune kicked off Fitzroy Basin Association's (FBA) Wild Dog Control Roadshow on Saturday 23 March. The roadshow attracted 17 attendees, who listened to Darren Pointon and Jordy Oostrom on the best methods to control wild dog populations within the region. It was great to see a wide variety of ages with children and adults alike gaining some knowledge and skills from the presenters. Darren and Jordy dispelled myths around wild dog trapping, provided plenty of tips when setting traps and walked the attendees through the use of lures. They also touched on hygiene and safety when dealing with animals infected with hydatids (a parasitic disease and biosecurity concern) – a major issue when dealing with wild dogs. A representative of Clipex also attended the roadshow, answering exclusion fence enquiries and trapping supplies and trail cameras were available for purchase on the day from Dave and Tracey Randell from Professional Trapping Supplies, with generous rebates from FBA.
Thanks to the Queensland Government and the Queensland Feral Pest Initiative for the funding to make this day possible. Winners of the trap and camera lucky door prize were Ian and Alison Tutt. The Injune Eels Swim Club held their end of year presentation night during March to celebrate a successful season of summer swimming. The club, which trained on Tuesdays under the watchful eye of Julie Gray and held time trials and competitive swimming on Thursdays, has now retired for the winter and will recommence in September with a new line up of activities. The Swimstar Award for the 8-9 age group was Jack Denton who was also the most improved swimmer of his age group. In the 10+ age group Bella Gordon received the Swimstar award while Joe Pringle was the most improved in the group. The Club Spirit Award went to Carly Northam and Holly Paul was the Club Champion. Thanks to the committee – President Louise Paul, Vice-President Jamie Paul, Secretary Karen Sellars,
and Treasurer Tina Adermanan – for all their hard work during the season and to Hannah Andrews for acting as time-keeper.

There has been excitement at the Yuleba and District Bowl’s Club with the Committee being successful in obtaining a grant of $150 000 from the Queensland Government’s Playing Places and Spaces funding program. The money will be used to replace and extend the bowling green. The Bowl’s Club Committee have raised around $100 000 over time as part of their contribution to the project. President of the Yuleba & District Recreation Association, Michael Tiley said, “We are very excited about this project and the Yuleba & District Bowl’s Club is just waiting on the final quote to come in before work can commence,” “Club members are looking forward to the new and improved facilities,” said Mr Tiley. Over the last few months, Michael has been involved in another project on the Recreation Association Club House construction of a ramp to allow better access to the facilities. Michael has been ably assisted by Kerry Hewitt, Rocky White, Graham Emery and Aiden, Toby and Jordan Tiley and would like to thank all for their assistance.
QCWA Jackson Branch News QCWA Jackson Branch organised a social get together on Sunday 31 March for a few hours of conversation, friendship, drinking and eating. Some families chose to play table tennis. 17 adults and 4 children attended from the Jackson and Yuleba areas. A pleasant afternoon was had by all. There will be a commemoration service for ANZAC Day on 25 April at 10.30am at the memorial plaque near the play shed. The QCWA Hall will be open for morning tea and viewing of the honour boards following the service. Please bring a plate to share. For more information contact Polly Leahy 0427276483. The next social event at the hall, a BBQ will be held on Sunday 28 April at 12pm following the Landcare meeting about harissia cactus control at 11am . Burgers will be $5 each. Please bring dessert. Harissia Cactus Jackson and Murilla Landcare Groups are holding a meeting to discuss the ongoing Harrisia Cactus Control Project on Sunday 28 April at 11am at the Jackson Hall. All landholders need to attend. Harrisia Cactus is a prohibited invasive plant
under the Biosecurity Act 2014. It must not be kept, moved, given away or sold without a Permit. The Act requires everyone to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants and animals under their control. This is called a general biosecurity obligation (GBO). By law, everyone has a general biosecurity obligation (GBO) to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risk of it spreading. Sunday 28 April is final service for Anglican Ministers Graham and Imelda in Roma in St Paul’s Parish. Recently Fr Graham celebrated his final service in Yuleba at St Andrew’s on Palm Sunday. We asked Fr Graham to comment on their time based in Roma and ministry in the district. So Graham, what brought you and Imelda to Roma? I think we were invited by the Archbishop to come out to heal a community that had known great disruption and turmoil for some time. I think he chose us because we had some years under our belt and had the personal reserves to withstand the heat that might have greeted us. What we found was a mixed bag. There were some beautiful pockets of faithful Christian witness in small places such as Yuleba and Injune where the local community had taken responsibility for creating and sustaining the communitarian spirit. It was a joy to join them and share in their community building by their faithful witness together. What have you learned in the last three years here? We have experienced much love and acceptance at the same time as much fear and rejection. One more than outweighs the other. Love will always conquer. That is the core of our Christian message for the world. What do people fear? People fear anything they do not understand or that threatens their sense of security. Massive social change is happening in this part of the world every bit as much as in our cities. People fear any change but in particular changes that make the world they grew up in and familiar with are the most challenging.
The most common words Jesus speaks in the New Testament are: ‘Do not be afraid.” We wish Graham and Imelda all the best for their future ministries.
Noonga American Tennis Tournament Noonga recently held their American Tennis Tournament on Sunday 7 April under beautiful sunny conditions - ideal for tennis. Players travelled as far afield as Gulugaba, Miles, Wandoan and Yuleba. Prize winners were: Primary Boys – Archie Cass, High School Boys – Oscar Cass, High School Girls – Payton Leahy, Womens – June Henry, Mens – Three-way tie between Joe Sharp, Brendan Leahy and Brian Sinnamon. Brian was the happy winner of the lucky number draw pulled out of a hat. A huge thank you to the Noonga Tennis Club Committee who organised a great day once again and to everyone who donated to the Raffle.

Noonga Youth On 19 March three Noonga students Cory Leahy Miles State High School, Kaydence McCormick and Monty Hindman both from Dulacca State School competed in the Miles & District
10-19 years Orienteering. The event was held at the Columboola Outdoor Environmental & Education Centre. All three qualified for the Miles and District Orienteering team to contest the SW Trials at Columboola on 28 April.
Monty has also been selected in the following Miles and District teams to contest the South West Trials. M&D Soccer – SW Trials at Charleville M&D Touch Football – SW Trials at St George M&D Rugby League Team – SW Trials at Roma M&D Australian Primary Schools Rugby League – ARL Development Cup in Surat He is also contesting the M&D Cross Country Trials coming up soon in Miles and just recently he was awarded 11yrs Boys Age Champion at the Small Schools Athletics Competition in Dulacca.

Small Business Workshops Maranoa Regional Council has received funding through the Queensland Government Small Business Week for workshops to be held in Surat, Injune and Mitchell at the end of May 2019. The Better Business Solutions Workshops - Tips, Tools & Tech, will take place in Surat on May 29, Injune on May 30 and Mitchell on May 31, 2019. Gratitude Prompts Author and speaker Karen Purves is coming to the Surat Library on Tuesday April 30 at 9:30am to talk about her latest book ‘Gratitude Prompts’. Karen started her gratitude practice some 20 years ago but it wasn’t until the passing of her daughter five years ago that she realised gratitude practice encompasses her whole life. Karen says “This is how the book, Gratitude Prompts arrived,” “I found myself in a family crisis and decided that I wasn’t going to go to that dark and desolate place,” said Karen. “So, I wrote a thousand words a day until I had written the 41,000 words,” “This experience has been a delight. How often are we able to combine creativity and love to steer us away from negative moods,” “This is what Gratitude Prompts did for me. I hope it does the same for you,” said Karen. Karen Purves will sign books after her talk and books will be available to purchase at each Library or bring your own copy along for signing.
