ORATORIAN COMMUNITY NEWS
Br. Andrew Wagstaff was instituted as a Lector at last Monday’s Mass, on the Feast of Blessed John Henry Newman, another step on his way towards the Sacred Priesthood. This is not only so that he can act as a Reader at Mass, but also serve the church as a catechist and all that is part of this ancient ministry.
Kari Hintikka is soon to be clothed in the Habit of St Philip, advancing from Postulancy to the Novitiate. Please pray for him as he takes this significant step.
Our other aspirant, Wojtek, has decided not to return, after a holiday in his native Poland. The Aspirancy is an initial stage of the discernment process in which it is natural for some not to choose, to proceed, but to seek fulfilment of Vocation elsewhere. We congratulate him on the defence of his thesis and being awarded his degree in Theology in Poland, and pray for him as he continues to seek where, and what, is God’s call for him. QUOTATIONS FROM BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN:
“We should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend.”
“A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no-one could find fault.”
“Learn to do thy part and leave the rest to Heaven.”
“We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe.”
“Mary became the window of heaven, for through her, God poured the true light upon the world.” COURAGE: Speaking the Truth in Love: Welcoming and Accompanying our Brothers and Sisters Experiencing Same-Sex Attraction. Hosted at Holy Family Catholic Church, Redbridge Hill, Southampton SO16 4PL at 8pm on Monday 23rd October.
Speak to one of the Fathers or Brothers if you’d like to accompany one of us to this talk. There is no cost for the evening, which is sponsored by Portsmouth Catholic Diocese, and is consonant with the Catholic Church’s teaching, and moral and natural law.
Fr Bochanski writes: “Our pastoral priority toward people who experience same-sex attraction, and towards their parents and loved ones, must be to welcome them in the name of Christ, and help them to understand and accept God’s plan for their lives. This talk will consider how ‘speaking the truth in love’ to someone about his or her identity, vocation, and relationships can lead him, or her, to a greater self-understanding and fulfilment in Christ”.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION applications were returned last month and a letter has been sent to the parents. The programme begins immediately after the half term holiday.
ORGAN APPEAL: at last the much needed restoration of the organ is to begin, and work will commence this Monday! This is the first phase of the project. Any donations to help with the costs will be extremely welcome.
SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA: Saturday’s street procession of Our Lady of Aparecida also celebrated the centenary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima.
To celebrate this wonderful devotion, the old Baptistery has been transformed into a beautiful new shrine, designed by Kari. For some time now, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima has stood on the altar of the Sorrowful Virgin, but now she will have her own shrine, at which we will pray with our Portuguese community. Further enhancements to come!
40 DAYS FOR LIFE continues (until 5th November) in hundreds of cities around the world.
To join our local peaceful prayer vigil, please register your choice(s) on our local roster (as part of the international campaign) at: [email protected].

OUR CATHOLIC CHURCH SHOP is open every Sunday 11:30am to 12:30pm, after the 10:30am Solemn Mass.
Come and see our beautiful Florentine Collection of 7", Resin standing, Holy Water fonts/votive light holders, and a great selection of religious Christmas cards.
To go to our Church Shop, leave the church by the main entrance, down the disabled ramp, and left onto Richmond Hill. Then turn left down the stone steps into the ‘Catholic Institute’ (clearly etched into the arch over the entrance). The shop is located at the rear of the small hall, where coffee and cake are also served after the 10:30am Mass.
STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY (next week): The Parish Priest will talk to us about money – particularly about the Biblical teaching on Tithing (i.e. giving back one tenth of everything which God gives to us), and giving regularly, responsibly and realistically. The Parish has urgent need to double our weekly giving in order to reverse the deficit trend indicated in the (now weekly) ‘finance box’ below.
