NOVEMBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS Come this Monday (7:30am or 12:15pm), or at 12:15pm this Thursday or Saturday, to one of the remaining November Requiem Masses to pray for your departed loved ones.
There’s still time to send in the names of your departed family and friends, and offer a Mass for them. Just take a Holy Souls’ envelope from the back of church and return it via the Oratory House / Parish Office letterbox, or hand it to one of the Fathers or Brothers.
Bishop Philip writes in Portsmouth Diocesan weekly E-News: Understanding the Catholic notion of purgatory requires knowing the difference between a temporal consequence and an eternal consequence; this difference has nothing to do with damnation and salvation. Some people reject the idea of purgatory because they misunderstand its purpose. In this video, Fr Mike Schmitz explains why purgatory is needed, and straightens out some of those misunderstandings.

NEXT SUNDAY IS NATIONAL YOUTH SUNDAY: Bishop Philip says: I would like to invite all Sixth Formers and University Students, to join me for the 6pm evening Mass at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth, on National Youth Sunday, 26th November, the Feast of Christ the King. Mass will be followed by a Pizza supper.
Check with Br Andrew at this evening’s Cath. Soc. Fellowship Group, and contact our Youth Ambassador, Adam, on: [email protected]
5PM SATURDAY INTERNATIONAL VIGIL MASS has long had an international character, but there’s some misconception that it’s in English. The following has been the pattern for a number of years:
1st (and 5th) Saturday(s) of the month Mass is entirely in English.
2nd Saturdays it is always entirely in Portuguese (with the Portuguese Chaplain visiting from London).
3rd Saturdays Mass is said in English, but the Readings and sung parts are in Tagalog, for our Filipino Community.
4th Saturdays Mass is similarly said in English, while the variable parts are in Portuguese.
English Masses are all on Sundays – at 8am (quiet Mass), 10:30am (Solemn Mass with sung parts in Latin to Gregorian Chant and polyphony), 4pm (followed by Cath. Soc. Fellowship Group for our University Chaplaincy and other students).
ST PHILIP NERI’S MAXIM for today: Patience is necessary for the servant of God, and we must not be distressed at trouble, but wait for the consolation.
Find more from ‘Friends and Followers of St Philip Neri’ at: www.oratorian.org
OUR CATHOLIC CHURCH SHOP EXTENDED OPENING HOURS THIS SUNDAY ONLY after the 8am, 10:30am (as usual), and 4pm Masses. Don’t miss this one-off pre-Christmas opportunity to buy distinctly Christian Christmas cards, and browse our wide range of devotional articles.
We have many suitable gifts for inexpensive Christmas presents for family and friends. New stock just arrived includes Silver-plated Saints’ Pendants, Car Rosaries and more Nativity items. We have only one of each left of the 2018 Sunday Missal and a 2018 CTS 10 Minute Diary.
Our Catholic Shop entrance is beneath St Joseph’s Chapel (front right-hand corner of the church). To get there leave the church by the main Richmond Hill doors, and down the new ramp. Turn left onto Richmond Hill for a few paces, and turn in
left before the corner of Post Office Road. Go down the stone steps to our Catholic Institute halls. The Shop is at the rear of
the small hall.
SACRED HEART TELEVISION has an additional new camera in our Lady Chapel so that you can now see, and hear, the 7:30am Mass on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (also Extraordinary Form Masses at 6pm on First Fridays, and on the Eve of Days of Obligation etc.).
Just type in: “Sacred Heart TV”, or access via our website: www.sac-heart.org. At the top of the screen (beneath “Player, Schedule, Recordings”) click on “Church” (for Sunday and 12:15pm daily Masses), or on “Chapel” for the 7:30am and other Masses.
The “Mobile camera” is for next year’s start of our interviews, talks, and other presentations for Catholic Formation and Evangelization.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY (SVP) is being re-launched in our parish after some years in abeyance, but is now once again much needed.
Speak to Mike Hughes, or one of the Fathers or Brothers, or register your interest via the Parish Office. Find out more by visiting: svp.org.uk
STEWARDSHIP Thank you to all those who have responded to last month’s heartfelt appeal to sign Standing Order or Weekly Envelope forms, and for Gift Aid where appropriate. Spare forms are at the back of church for those who have still not signed up.
While the weekly shortfall has been lessening (thanks to responses, as above) there is still some way to go to obliterate the remaining £900 pounds (and backlog) P-L-E-A-S-E...
