"e Executive DirectorIt is hard to imagine another year has gone! Thanks to your continued support in 2012, the foundation reached a milestone of over $1,000,000 dollars in donations. This is a tremendous achievement for an organization that has no governmental funding, has not been awarded grants, but rather is propelled by those near and dear to the cause of brain aneurysms.

Aside from the foundation’s financial success, there were many other notable accomplishments in 2012. For the first time the foundation had a Lobby Day on Capitol Hill to raise awareness, stress the importance of early detection, and make a plea for greater funding for brain aneurysm research. We expanded our research grants awarded to 10 grants in the total amount of $200,000; we had a documentary aired on the Discovery Channel; and, we created a continuing medical education (CME) lecture targeting primary care professionals so they can better understand the signs, symptoms, and proper diagnosis procedures for brain aneurysms.

Proudly we continued in our effort to assist hospitals create a support group for their patients and families, bringing the total number of groups to approximately 60 support groups across the US and Canada. Our monthly webinars continued to have great attendance with people joining from not only the US, but other countries as well. In 2012 there were multiple events each month being held across the country due to the generosity of many of you. All these things along with the continued growth on our social media sites have brought brain aneurysm awareness to a new level.

My heartfelt gratitude, on behalf of the foundation, goes out to you for all you have given to the foundation in 2012 to bring us to new heights and cross the $1,000,000 threshold! Your donations of time, talent, and money have enabled The Brain Aneurysm Foundation to continue the fight against the devastation caused by brain aneurysms.

"e Medical Advisory Board Executive DirectorThe end of the year marks a time for reflection on accomplishments of the past. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation was fortunate in 2012 as it demonstrated continued growth financially as well as in many awareness activities due to the support of so many of you. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation has funded a total of $675,000 of research since the inception of the grant program in 2007. In 2012 the largest amount of funding to date, $200,000, was distributed to ten different research projects selected through a competitive process. This funding will continue to further efforts to identify and treat unruptured aneurysms as well as aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and its associated complications, such as vasospasm and stroke. In addition to the increased funding efforts for research, The Brain Aneurysm Foundation surpassed the $1,000,000 mark of donations for the first time. Undoubtedly, these funds will be a valuable resource in the foundation’s mission of raising worldwide awareness and education of brain aneurysms.

2012 was an exciting year for the development and implementation of efforts to raise awareness for the public, as well as healthcare professionals. The foundation created a continuing medical education (CME) lecture aimed at primary care professionals to help them better understand the signs, symptoms, and proper screening for brain aneurysms. This lecture was delivered at a PRI-MED Conference in Boston, MA to over 500 attendees. Our hope is to provide similar lectures in different cities each year. 2012 was also a time of strengthening the Medical Advisory Board, with an increase of members and the development of regional leaders to establish good representation across the US and Canada.

2012 Financial Summary* Research Grants

Since 1994, when The Brain Aneurysm Foundation was established in Boston

on August 19, 1994, as a public charity, our funding has been targeted to

providing critical awareness, education, support and research funding to reduce the

incidence of brain aneurysm ruptures. The foundation has no endowment; every

dollar we raise is deployed to advance research to reduce the incidence of brain

aneurysm ruptures, to create wider awareness of brain aneurysms, to provide

support for those affected by brain aneurysms, and to educate patients, their

families, and the medical community about brain aneurysms.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation keeps a sharp eye on expenses and strives to

maintain a low overhead.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation awards research grants for basic scientific research directed at early detection, improved treatment modalities, and technological advances that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients with brain aneurysms. The foundation’s Research Grant Committee is headed by Robert Rosenwasser, MD, FACS, Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He, along with three other members of the Medical Advisory Board, scores all grant applications to determine the grant recipients based on the highest scores.

On September 20, 2012 at the Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis, MO, the grants were awarded at the Sixth Annual Brain Aneurysm Foundation Research Grant Symposium. Thanks to our supporters continued dedication to research to improve the lives of those affected by a brain aneurysm tomorrow, the foundation was able to award ten grants totaling $200,000 in 2012. This made the total amount of grants provided in the last five years over a half a million dollars! The funding we have distributed has enabled our recipients to move their projects forward and be their first step in securing further funding from other sources such as the NIH and AHA.

The evening featured an address by Ralph G. Dacey, Jr., MD, the Henry G. and Edith R. Schwartz Professor and Chairman of Neurological Surgery, as well as the Neurosurgeon-In-Chief of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

Awareness and Education

T he Brain Aneurysm Foundation, members of our Board of Directors and our Medical

Advisory Board, survivors and family members who have lost loved ones to brain aneurysms from all over the U.S. convened in Washington, D.C. on May 8, 2012 to meet with members of Congress to advocate for brain aneurysm awareness, research and

early detection. Advocates from many states including MD, VA, CT, NY, MI, OR, KS, IL, OH, MA, and TN were able to visit many Members of the House of Representatives and Senators offices to discuss brain aneurysm awareness, the importance of early detection and brain aneurysm research funding. There were over 100 meetings with both Senators and Congressmen, as well as a luncheon

briefing on Capitol Hill. Our supporters though our online petition HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE! There are now 16 co-sponsors of House Resolution H.Res 341. Many Members of Congress told us they became co-sponsors after receiving so many letters from our online petition advocacy program.

N E W M E D I C A L E D U C AT I O N A L I N I T I AT I V E

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation developed a medical educational lecture to be delivered via PRI-MED conferences targeting primary care physicians and nurses. The lecture focused on the importance of early detection via proper diagnosis and screening, as well as treatment options. The lecture is CME/CEU accredited. The first lecture took place at the PRI-MED East Conference held in Boston, MA on November 15-18, 2012. It included primary care professionals from MA, NH, ME, NY, CT, and RI and had a general attendance of

6,000+ medical professionals. Carlos David, MD, Director, Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery at Lahey Clinic and Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery, Tufts University School of Medicine and Regional Director of The Brain Aneurysm Foundation Medical Advisory Board, delivered the lecture. It was both well attended and well received by the medical professionals at the conference. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation would like to thank Aesculap, Inc. for providing an educational grant in support of this program.

Over 25,000 new educational pamphlets for brain aneurysm treatment options and recovery were distributed across the country and internationally, to medical facilities treating brain aneurysms, as well as over 60 support groups. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation would like to thank Codman Neurovascular and Covidien for providing the funding for the production of our new patient educational booklets.

“Knowledge is power.” The Brain Aneurysm Foundation has continued the tradition of empowering patients with important information related to the care of their aneurysms. To accomplish this goal, recent Brain Aneurysm Foundation live webinars have used the power of the Internet to create a webinar forum where patients can reach experts to discuss important details of their care, and most importantly, have the ability to ask questions while they are at home, at no cost. The BAF webinars have been very successful in reaching the above mentioned goals to satisfy the mission of The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol, an aneurysm surgeon and a member of the BAF Medical Advisory Board, has been moderating these webinars. We continue to receive very positive feedback from our members who attend these webinars from all over the world. The chat function of this webinar platform not only allows the members to interact with the speakers, but also offers a discussion forum for the patients to relate to each other while the live webinar is in progress. Importantly, these webinars are archived and are available for viewing shortly after the presentation of the live webinar on the BAF website. Support groups offer brain aneurysm survivors and their families the opportunity to share life experiences, work through challenges and find new ways to adapt to changes in their life. The goal of support group meetings is to help alleviate fears and concerns through education and group discussions. Survivors realize that they are not alone.

Survivors and caregivers share their experiences and show support to those that are in need. The healing of the spirit is just as important as that of the body.
