The Latham Chancel Choir will present Tom
Fettke’s “God Is With Us” Sunday, December 21
at 11:00am. Latham Sanctuary. Music retailer
J.W. Pepper describes “God Is With Us” as follows:
Celebrate a miracle: the appearance of God on earth
in the body and human soul of Jesus Christ. The In-
carnation is a sacred event so thrilling, so humbling,
so mystifying that we stand breathless in wonder and
awe. God Is With Us tells the Christmas story using
choir, soloists and a scripture narrative. It combines
exciting and moving classical music by Faure, Bee-
thoven, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, and Billings with some
of the world's most loved Christmas Carols. It opens
with the awe-filled simplicity of a Gregorian chant
and ends with a fun, festive journey through favorite
carols with a Nutcracker flair. And between, one ex-
periences exquisitely beautiful music, worthy of the
celebration of such a glorious and miraculous
event. We hope that you will be able to join the
Latham Chancel Choir as well as guest musicians and
soloists for this fun and festive celebration of the
birth of Christ!
Sunday, November 30 5:00pm
What is a Chrismon? Why do we use cedars and
holly for decoration? The answers to these ques-
tions and others will be addressed at our Hanging of
the Greens service and dinner on Sunday evening,
November 30 at 5:00pm in Farley Hall. Join us as
we begin to prepare for the coming of the Christ
Child by remembering our traditions and recogniz-
ing the symbols that are prevalent in our homes and
worship spaces. The service this year will take
place in Farley Hall and will be accompanied by
covered dishes of your favorite foods! This will
truly be an intergenerational service as people of all ages will be taking part! We hope that this will be a
blessed start to the Advent season!
Concert performed by Huntsville Concert Band Marsha Asquith, Music Director
The Christmas Program for Dec. 7, 2014 at 4pm is entitled “Classical Nostalgia.” We will be performing
music from yester-year, including Silver Bells, Wonderful Child, March of the Toys, ‘Twas the Night Before
Christmas (with narrator), as well as featuring our brass and woodwind ensembles. There is even a sing-along
for the audience, too! We hope you’ll come and bring your family and friends!
Marsha Asquith, Music Director of the Huntsville Concert Band, received her bachelor's and master's degrees
in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Since 1989, she has taught K-12 band and
choir in both Alabama and Texas, and she is currently the band director at Meridianville Middle School. Mrs.
Asquith has twice been selected for Who's Who Among American Teachers, and she has been active in the
Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators since 1993. Mrs. Asquith has
played French horn with professional orchestras throughout the South, performs frequently in local churches,
and teaches privately. She is the co-founder and manager of the Twickenham Winds community band. Mrs.
Asquith is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Alabama Music Educators Associa-
tion, the Alabama Bandmasters Association and is currently Vice-Chairman of the Alabama Bandmasters As-
sociation, District 1.
The Huntsville Concert Band is a community band that performs year-round for residents of the City of Hunts-
ville and the Tennessee Valley. Founded in 1963, the Band regularly appears at Huntsville's annual Veterans
Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, at neighborhood gatherings and senior residences, and at Panoply and
Concerts in the Park.
The Huntsville Concert Band is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a member of the Association of Con-
cert Bands and The Arts Council. The Music Director and all members are volunteers, and membership is open
to anyone in the community who plays a band instrument and can participate in rehearsals and performances.
No auditions are required.

Staff-Parish Relations Dean Stone, Chairman
We are approaching the time of year when the LUMC Staff-Parish Relations Committee conducts its evalua-
tions of the pastors and staff for the period covering the last calendar year. We would like to have your input
to include in that process. Please take the time to provide us with any praises, concerns, and comments you
may wish to make about any of the pastors and staff. Try to be as specific and detailed as possible, as we need
any details you can provide to properly prepare our evaluations. We will definitely read and consider anything
you would like to say.
If you would like to provide written comments, please leave them at the office (indicate on the envelope or
outside of the folded paper you may use that it is for the SPRC, and I will pick them up – the SPRC members
will be the only ones who read them) or mail or email them to me at the address’ listed below. If you would
prefer to speak with us, please contact any member of the SPRC listed below. You do not need to include your
name or contact information, but it would be helpful if we have any follow-up questions. We would like to
have your comments by December 14, 2014, to ensure that they are available as we meet to conduct our delib-
erations. We appreciate your time and effort in assisting us in making decisions which reflect the feelings of
the entire church body of Latham.

As 2014 begins to wind down we are already thinking about our Outreach efforts for the coming year. For a
number of years, the biggest line item in our Outreach budget has been Habitat for Humanity. Through that
great ministry, we have had the opportunity to partner with several other local churches in providing homes for
a number of local families. But as with other mission and ministry activities within our church, we need to
periodically re-evaluate the use of our resources and make sure they are in sync with our priorities.
After discussing our Outreach plans for 2015 with our Outreach coordinator, Doug Seay, and some others, we
have decided to re-direct the funds previously used for Habitat toward something we are calling “Southeast
Huntsville Outreach Events.” The model for these events is basically what we held at Lily Flagg apartments
back in June of this year. Our plans are to hold quarterly events at Lily Flagg during 2015 and also to hold
four other events in either a city park or another apartment complex. Our hope is to build relationships with
new people in their environment – to be an incarnational presence where they are, which is what the Body of
Christ is called to be.
We want our financial resources to always be linked with our hands and feet in service to the world around us.
Our belief is that when we are intentionally engaged in the ministries we are supporting financially it becomes
transformational for both those we are serving, as well as for us. We believe that these outreach events are a
great opportunity to make a difference in our community here in Southeast Huntsville and our hope and prayer
is that we will have great participation from many of you when these events take place.

Moose Charms!
Recently, one of our own has
been fighting the battle of his
life. In July, Brackin, “The
Moose”, Clark, was diag-
nosed with Non-Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma. Since that time,
he and his family have been
in Memphis working hard to
bring him home healthy and
cancer free. When our youth
heard about his cancer, they started thinking of
ways to help him. One day, two of our young ladies
decided a “moose” charm sale was the way to go!
Immediately, Keri Klaus was on the hunt and found
the perfect one! The charms were a hit, not only in
our church, but in the community as well. We are
proud to say that the charms have sold and the youth
was able to put over $1000 into an account that was
set up in Brackin’s honor! Our children and our
church have truly seen what can happen when we
rally together to help someone.
Two Church-wide Dinners Coming Up….
Page 9
Youth Ministry Matt Savage, Interim Youth Director
You should be very proud of your youth group. We just finished a mission to 305 8th Street, a group home for
disabled adults. The youth represented Christ and His church very well! They had a wonderful evening of
games and quality time with the residents; but this youth group does not rest on their laurels! We are excited to
join the congregation in its advent services. And, to make it better, there will be several opportunities for the
congregation to show up and support our young group over the next month.
November 30th- Several of the youth will be singing and doing some of the readings for the Hanging of the
Greens Service.
December 7th- The youth band will be joining the Orchard Praise Band to lead worship Sunday morning.
December 14th- The youth will be at the Happy Birthday Jesus party, and we will also go caroling, along with
the rest of the church, to homebound church members.
December 31st- If we are lucky enough to find the adults needed, we will be having a New Year’s Ball drop
party in the youth room. If you are interested in helping you can call me at (256) 698-2686 or you can email
me at [email protected].
I can say from personal experience that the youth group planted the seed, but it was the unconditional love
shown by the entire congregation that nurtured that seed into the faith I have today. I can also see that is still
what goes on! I hope that you will be able to come out and support this wonderful group of kids that we have
and, through that support, help develop them into the future leaders of Christ’s church! On behalf of the youth,
the youth coordinators, and myself; I want to say thank you.
November 30 - after the Hanging of the Greens
service. Bring your favorite entrée, side dish dessert
or Thanksgiving leftovers!!
December 14 -
SOUP-ER HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS PARTY -
Bring your favorite soup or side. Cake provided.
After dinner, we will divide up and go caroling to
our homebound residents.
Brackin's Bike-a-Thon (picture coming)
When you ask the children at
Latham to throw themselves into
something...they don't go half-
way!!! They raised $832.75 for
Brackin Clark St. Jude Fund at
Brackin's Bike-a-Thon on No-
vember 1st. I call that awesome-
ness!!!! If you would still like to
make a donation, go to any Red-
stone Federal Credit Union, tell
them you would like to contrib-
ute to the Brackin Clark St. Jude
Fund, and they will make sure
your money gets in the right place! Many thanks to the riders, the parents and to Dave Stone for doing a safety
check on all our bikes and helmets. We love you Brackin!!!
PUMPKIN TIME IS OVER!!!
Another season in the pumpkin patch is over. Once again, we met some really nice people from our neighbor-
hood and made some new friends. Several new parents came to make their children's pictures with our pump-
kins and our pumpkins participated in many carving contests around town. Every day I worked at least one
person told me that they waited for Latham to open their patch before they bought their pumpkins, even if they
did cost a little more. One of the things we are known for is being "the pumpkin church" and maybe that's not
such a bad thing!
It wasn't a record year, but it came in close. We reported $14,946.90 in sales. We keep 33% of that, so with the
donations made (which we don't have to report) the youth and children will each get over $3,000 this year.
That will be spent on missions for children and youth, such as Behold, mission trips and outreach events.
Thanks so much to all those who helped unload and who worked The Patch. This fundraiser would not be pos-
sible without you!
After The Patch closed, we took our
leftover pumpkins to the North Ala-
bama Food bank. They distributed them
to various churches and agencies across
the region, along with instructions on
how to bake them. So, not only did our
Patch help with missions for youth and
children, we fed the hungry from it too!

Our little friends at LUMCDC have had lots of Fall
Fun and are now looking forward to Holiday Happi-
ness!
What a wonderful time of year. November is filled
with gratitude and generosity. We had a very suc-
cessful Canned Soup Drive and collected 79 cans
and packages of soup to benefit the Homeless Veter-
ans and Citizens of Huntsville. We are happy to help
the less fortunate in our community, especially since
the cold weather has arrived.
We love books! Our Usborne Book Fair was a huge
success. Thanks to the many school families and
church member purchases, LUMCDC earned over
$400 in FREE educational books from Usborne. We
are so very excited to add to our school library and classroom learning resources.
Our Thanksgiving Feast is Wednesday, November 19 at 11:30 am where Pilgrims, Indians, and Turkeys will
come enjoy traditional feast foods. We have so very much to be thankful for!
December will prove to be a fabulous month of celebrating the birth of Jesus! What joy comes from seeing the
season through a child's eyes.
Our annual Christmas Program will be Tuesday, December 16 at 11:30am. We will re-enact the nativity com-
plete with stable animals and song. We are trying really hard to be good boys and girls so Santa will visit our
school on Tuesday, December 9. We will be focusing on giving this holiday season and encourage our school
families and Latham church members to donate new children's pajamas (sizes 12 months-teens) or a package
of diapers to benefit our friends at Manna House this holiday season. Pajamas can be pinned to the garland in
the Children's wing and diapers placed in the red wagon from December 1-17. The gift of giving is a true
blessing to not only the receiver but the giver as well.
Happy Holidays from Latham Child Development Center!
NO, Santa is not going under the knife...nor being anesthetized! He had a great recovery after last year’s op-
eration and is up and running at full speed! Those who helped him last year will remember the “operation!” It
is a project to deliver specific gifts to specific persons!
The community has many mentally challenged individuals who live in assisted homes with a very marginal
income. Operation Santa Claus makes it possible for them to receive a true Christmas gift...one that they have
wished for. Latham was most generous last year and filled over 70 of these requests…a true Christmas Spirit.
The operation is simple, choose a card in the Welcome Center the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Then do your
shopping and return the gift along with the card the following Sunday. No need to wrap, but you can enclose a
cheery Christmas card. It’s a fast and easy project with many warm and “fuzzy” blessings!
In case confusion reigns, the card you pick up will have a number, a first name and the item requested on
it...size, color, etc. See, it is easy! See you the Sunday after Thanksgiving!
P.S. I still have some 2015 Calendars available at $8.00 each. Call me at 256-881-5685.

Expanding and Resourcing Discipleship…
One aspect of making discipleship our ministry priority as
a church was to initiate an evaluation of all our existing
mission and ministry activities utilizing our discipleship
filters of relationships, transformation, reproduction, and
Christlikeness. Our desire is that these filters will help us
to expand and resource discipleship across the whole
church, and you might wonder how this will actually take
place. The basic idea of this process is to simply use these
filters to ask questions about what we’re doing. If we were
evaluating our youth ministry, the first question would be,
“How are we building relationships through our youth ministry?” and we would use the other filters to gener-
ate similar questions. The answers would then help us to understand what we are doing right and where we
need to improve our efforts or even look to make significant changes in our approach. Even though this was
part of our Long Range Plan that was approved several months ago, this evaluation process has yet to take
place. Our plans are to start this process early in 2015.
Discipleship Groups
We will be forming new “Intensive” discipleship groups in the January/February time frame in 2015. If you
receive an invitation to be part of one of these groups, I ask you to prayerfully consider it, as this is critical for
the future of this church. If other church commitments are impacting your ability to say “yes,” I would invite
you to come talk with me – we’ll figure something out.
“Congregational” discipleship groups are still going strong and if you would like to be a part of one of these
groups, opportunities are still available. If you cannot be part of a group, I would invite you to join with us in
reading through the Bible in a year. I have lots of extra copies of the “Life Journal,” which provide you with
our daily reading plan and space for journaling. Copies are $7 and you can call me if you would like one –
256.881.4069.
We raised $317.60 at the November Bake Sale. The money will support scholarships to the Women’s Retreat
in March. We appreciate your support by baking and buying goodies! The few that were left were immedi-
ately frozen to be used in the Casserole Ministry.
December Bake Sale to Feature Side Dishes
We tried to make your Thanksgiving holidays a little different or easier with our November Bake Sale. Now
it’s time to do the same with your Christmas holidays. We are asking folks to make side dishes (enough for 4
people) or Christmas cookies. We have been told that this approach will make holidays easier for folks for
whom holiday cooking is difficult (or it may make your holiday table a little different).
Bake Sale: Sunday, December 14th, between services
Bring goodies to Farley Hall Kitchen on Saturday, December 13th, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Food should be frozen and wrapped in saran wrap, labeled with ingredients, and re-heating instructions.
