RODDER’S GRUB & PUB

Cascade Pool League Awards BashCascade Pool League And Sponsors Send LuckyWinner to HawaiiPortland’s Cascade Pool League held its 9th annual Awards Bash at

Rodders Pub and Grub in Oregon City February 24th. It was a smash —better than ever, culminating in CPL’s best giveaway yet - a trip for two toHawaii. Yep, five nights in a resort on the shores of Waikiki, airfareincluded. ALOHHHHHHA!The lucky Hawaii trip winner was Steve Anderson, who plays on the HappyHour team out of the Pastimes and has been a CPL member for the pastsix years. In between grinning fromear to ear and jumping up and down,Steve expressed his thanks to all thepeople who made this possible, sayingyou’d soon find him on the beach wherehe for sure wouldn’t be answering hisphone. He plans to go with his fiancéNelli as soon as she can get time offwork. Funny thing about luck - Stevehad been telling everyone all day he waslucky in raffles and he was going to win- he even stood next to the drawing tableso he wouldn’t have far to walk toreceive his prize. Something to be saidabout positive thinking! Steve had agreat year this year, earning recognitionfrom his peers for his improved game, and the trip couldn’t have gone toa nicer guy.CPL pulls out all the stops at their Awards Bash. If you are a CPL member, you know what that means - expect and have a darn good time. See allthe friends, enjoy a day of camaraderie, bring a box to take home all thegiveaways and prizes, and look forward to the next pool session. Thisyear the Awards Bash saw over $7,000 in prizes, awards and giveawaysgo out the door. Spanky Vasconcellos walked away with a color tv, andKevin Aird won a set of Aramith pool balls. Tommy Milhollin scored ahuge Miller Genuine Draft mirror. Players presented league operatorsAndrew Monstis and Sassy Campbell with embroidered denim shirts and

a card signed by many who attended the Bash.Moving the Bash to Rodder’s Pub and Grub allowed CPL’s many membersto spread out a little this year. Having extra tables made it possible toadd extra pool events, and a non-smoking area provided breathable air.Rodders is fast becoming one of the best pool sponsors in the entirenorthwest. Not only did they host the 9th annual Bash, but they added$1000 to the Hawaii trip. CPL’sother sponsors also added to thetrip, including Pub 181 and Jeff’sHangout in Gresham, Pastimes inFairview, Skyland in Troutdale, FullMoon in Boring, Dukes, Classics,Peanut Farm, Station 66 and 39thSt Pub in SE Portland, Wichita onKing Road and Jake’s in Sellwood. At the Bash, members were able topurchase raffle tickets, making thedraw even more exciting. It was a relaxing and fun day for allwho endured the competitive fall-winter CPL season. The manygiveaways kept everyoneentertained while pool events were held. The MVP’s competed in a ringgame, with Henry Rico coming out on top and taking $125 winner takeall. Several women played in an 8-ball event, with Jennifer Windell taking

$40 and the win. A 6-ball speed poolevent was captured by Doug Poczynekand Kurt Hamm, who split the $1Thisyear a carom tournament was held andprovided the entrants with quite achallenge, and spectators with somenew shots to try out later. Dan Rodrigueztook first and $90, followed by JosieLeroy with $50, Dave Hawksley, $30 andDan Rohlfing $10. 10 mini-tournamentsran throughout the day, with winnerseach taking $40 home (Bill Meyer andKevin Aird twice, Dave Hawksley, DanRodriguez, Jake Morin, Paris Brown,Mike Norris, and Rick Whitmire). All thepool events had $350 money added by

sponsors and CPL. As if that weren’t enough fun, there was an ‘All Youcan Eat’ buffet put on by Rodders for a five dollar bill.Cascade Pool League’s philosophy that league play is about more thanjust qualifying for regional and national events shows up in everythingthey do. Besides the annual Awards Bash, every one of their 300 plusplayers receives a strong payout, for starters. They hold a mid-seasontournament, that this year boasted upwards of $1,000 added, thanks tosponsor Rodders. Their 8-ball season culminates in an InterdivisionalTournament, pitting flights of peers against one another in a head-to-head 5-week battle, leaving everyone pumped for the 8-Ball WesternBCA regional. 25 of their teams are headed to the beach this spring.

This shot is from the Prop/Novelty/Special Arts Discipline and has aDegree of Difficulty (DOD)of 7.

Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To setthis shot up position B ball as shown, not quite centered over pocket B.The B ball should be 1/2 balls width out from the long rail. The C ball isfrozen to B ball with allowance for throw effect on C ball to pocket C. TheD ball is centered between pocket points. The cue ball is in hand, or asthe diagram suggests. Put the bridge on rail tops as in diagram with achalk cube under the handle on rail. Make sure C ball will go under thebridge, if not put something under bridge head to raise bridge higher. The C ball edge closest to bridge is flush to back edge of bridge. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball with a jump stroke intoB ball. The cue ball then jumps up and over the bridge, goes aroundthree cushions and goes under the bridge to D ball. Make all three objectballs as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may hit the bridge on theway over and may contact an extra cushion by D ball. A scratch is alsoallowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this great shot. Onnew cloth place the cue ball closer to ball B. With the cue ball jumpinginto B ball understand that the carom angle of the cue ball off the B ballwould not be the same as if aiming without the jump. Why? Because youare contacting B ball in the air and hitting the B ball thinner. If the cue ballgoes under the bridge on it’s way to D ball don’t use the cube of chalk, itis optional. Most people hit the shot too hard and jump the balls off thetable. This shot is executed with a moderate jump stroke. The last helpfulhint, get the owner’s permission to try this shot before you attempt it.Most places don’t allow jump shots. If it is your own table GO FOR IT!Keep Strokin! Sarge

ALL DAY POOL SEMINARSaturday March 24th

Bigger and Richer Than Ever(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) -March 13-18, 2007, the Western BCA regional8-ball tournament takes place at Chinook Winds Casino and Resort inLincoln City, Ore. There will be singles, teams and mixed scotch playwith levels from novice to master. With 1,100-plus players entered in thisyear’s 8-ball tournament and more than $95,000 total payout money, the8-ball tournament shows outstanding growth from last year. These figures translate into an almost an 18 percent increase in playersentered and more than 31 percent increase in total payout. Added moneyis up $6,000. Total number of entries for all events is up 26 percent. Not only have entries and monies increased, but also membership inWBCA has increased. Membership stands aat 2,676 in 2007. The boardis considering plans to increase membership even more.WBCA regional tournaments have been held at Chinook Winds since1998. It was shortly after the first tournament at Chinook Winds thatWBCA separated the 8- and 9-ball tournaments. The tournaments havegone quite seamlessly with one exception -a snowstorm in the Rockiesstalled the pool table arrival for 9-ball, forcing the cancellation of thescotch portion of play that year. Thankfully, the tables did arrive in timefor singles and teams. This year there will be numerous giveaways to players during thetournament. One of the big giveaways is a free room for one of the players.WBCA is excited about this year’s tournament and WBCA growth. Thisyear’s tournament should be better than ever. Good luck to all the players.

More Thin CutsBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

March 2007March 2007March 2007March 2007March 200788888

A year ago I gave you some thin cuts to work onin which you had to make the shot progressivelymore difficult until you couldn’t make it half thetime. If you missed that issue, it’s available onthe On The Break News website in the articlesarchive. Now I’m going to ask you to control thecue ball on thin cuts.In the diagram is a common situation, at least forme. It would have been better to have gottenposition on an easier shot, but you have to shootthis 70-degree cut and control the cue ball. Canyou? The diagram shows the “difficult” position. Trystarting with the cue ball at the easy position. Thegoal is to make the ball and get the cue ball to

land near the selected spot. Start with spot 1. Is it possible to make theshot, and have the cue ball go towards “1” but not reach it? How fardoes the cue ball travel if the object ball barely gets to the pocket? It’simportant to know this for various cuts since it tells you if certain positionplays are possible. Can you leave the cue ball within a hand-span of 1? Next, try to bring thecue ball off 1 and back down the table. When I have this shot, the nextball seems to always be at that end of the table. Note that if you hitbetween 1 and 2, there is no chance of scratching if the cue ball getsback to the other end rail. Now repeat the drill with the needed side spin to get the cue ball to endnear 2 and 3 and then crank the speed to return to the other end of the

table. Try those three landingspots with the cue ball startingat the harder positions. The next rail spots, 4, 5 and 6,are considerably harder tomaster since they take quite abit of side spin. Again, try themfirst from the “easy” cue ballposition and work up to the hardposition. When you have a thin cut likethis with a lot of side spin, it isvery important to visualize thewhole shot. See how far out onthe cue ball you’re going to hit.Imagine the curve of the cue ballon the way to the object ball.Decide before you shoot justhow far the cue ball is supposedto go up the table. Making upyour mind about all of thesethings before you shoot isessential for success. If youhaven’t really decided on thespeed, then the English, swerveand throw are all up in the air aswell. While complete visualization is important for all shots, it’s particularlyimportant on cuts with side spin because of all the factors that have to beblended correctly.

Ga Young Kim: En Route to VictorySamm Diep (c) February 2007On Friday, February 16th, I stopped by the Wynkoop downtown to checkout an exhibition match between Melissa Little and (at the time) two-timeWPBA champion, Ga Young Kim. In town for only a couple days beforeheading to North Carolina for the 2007 Carolina Classic Stop, Ga Young

graced us with a strong performance againstMelissa and some challenge matches withspectators.Table 2, the gorgeous black and chromeBrunswick Gold Crown IV, often referred to as“my table” by Melissa would be the sight of theshowdown. Before they arrived, the balls were

washed and the table was brushed. Chairswere set up around the table and the crowdwas starting to gather. Players of all levelscame to watch some quality pool. Enter:Melissa and Ga Young. They each warmed up by throwing the nineballs on the table and just shooting them in

no particular order. When it was Ga Young’s turn to warm up, she shotthe balls in, selecting mostly longer, more difficult shots, slamming eachone in the center of the pocket at near break speed. Known for her fastand furious style, she used this timeto loosen up and really let her strokego. If she missed, she set that shotback up and shot it again until shemade it.The match began. The format wasa race to nine, winner breaks.Melissa broke and scratched in thefirst rack and would not see a balluntil the fifth rack. Ga Youngcompletely dominated the games. Her breaks were solid and mostracks were wide open and friendly. In one game, after her openingbreak, she ran the entire rack in 46 seconds flat. Yikes! With a few safety battles in the middle of the set and a couple errors byGa Young, the match still ended in her favor, 9-4. Afterwards, I had achance to speak with her briefly and learned a few things I didn’t knowabout Ga Young Kim:Korean native, she moved to Taiwan a couple years ago to pursue pool.“There’s more pool in Taiwan,” she said, “you don’t have to drive morethan 20 minutes for pool.” Sadly, she left behind her parents in Korea,

but her sister now lives with her inTaiwan to attend Mandarin school. When asked if the tables played thesame in the states, she explainedthat the tables in Taiwan have muchtighter pockets. What aboutgambling? Is there much gamblingin Taiwan? “There used to be morebut too many people know who thegood players are now.”Ga Young is quite the impressive

linguist. She didn’t start learning English until 2004 when she beganplaying pool. Without learning it in school, she just picked up things fromher friends on the tour. Now, she’s also fluent in Mandarin (the primarylanguage in Taiwan, along with Taiwanese) and also speaks someCantonese courtesy of her Hong Kong boyfriend. Lastly, when askedwhere “The Little Devil” came from she simply responded, “I don’t know.People started calling me that. I just said ‘whatever’.”If you’ve never had the chance to watch her play, set your VCRs and

As time goes by in what is left of my years it becomesmore and more a fact the restoring a tired older table can be more workand take a lot more time than building a brand new copy of the old one.Even though I have been fixing up the old ones since I was nine yearsold each one brings out a new challenge; offers a new approach; teachesa new lesson.I sold Mike McMenamin a table that I had in inventory for many years

and I was getting tiredof paying storage on itand all the other oldertables that I have beenmoving with me to allthe locations that Ihave kept them in forall these years. Mikelikes Quarter sawnoak and he wanted 41/2 x 9’s for his newestplace “ the Spar “ inOlympia and thisMission style suitedMike’s plan if I coulddo a match. The

match took less than 30 man hours for my son and Aaron to bring to thepoint of applying the tints and Orange Shellac; however, the Original gotwet in storage and the veneer had peeled and the corners of the framehad come apart. I spent over 100 hours getting the table reglued, veneerput back and finished. It’s a lot harder to match colors on an old table forthe side and end exposed to the day-light for 70 years is not going tohave the same character as the ones that have been in the shade. Theflake on 100 year oldQuarter sawn oaktable is much largerand defined than youcan find today andthe contrast morepronounced. Bothtables look alike butto me the old one isthe more beautiful, but you can judge foryourself. The Spar ison fourth, 1 block offCapital in Olympia.Just as we finishedthe Spar I got a callfrom the Heckman’s right here in Scappoose. Three years ago they hadtheir table completely restored by someone calling themselves Antiquetable specialists. The cushions they put on had completely fallen off. Therail cloth had pulled out of the feather strips and the pockets did not evencome close to fitting. They did not know that hard finishes will not stick toRosewood so it blistered. Worse yet, years ago when it was converted, the person in charge managed to cut 5 of the six rails short and mess up

Byrne’s CompleteBook of Pool Shots

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:ROBERT BYRNE has wontournaments in 8-ball, 9-ball andstraight pool. In 1999 he won boththe National Senior and NationalAmateur tournaments in three-cushion billiards. Named “BestBilliard Writer” by BilliardsDigest, his books and videos onpool have sold nearly a millioncopies. ROBERT BYRNE

STUN“Stun” is a term I borrowed years ago from the English game of snookerto describe shots in which the cueball hits an object ball with no (or verylittle) topspin or backspin. In other words, the cueball is sliding ratherthan rolling at the moment of impact. A sliding cueball that hits an objectball squarely stops dead in its tracks: the so-called stop shot. It pays tomaster it at all distances. If a sliding cueball hits an object ball at an angle, it caroms off along thetangent line (the right-angle line). It takes experience, judgement andtouch to make the cueball roll to a stop at any given point on the tangentline.A cueball struck in the exact center (on the equator) starts out slidingand gradually takes on natural roll. If the cueball is only a foot or twofrom the object ball, hitting the cueball in the center with a firm stroke willcause it to stop on impact with the object ball, but for greater distances, draw must be used, unless you shoot extremely hard. At the length ofthe table, use maximum backspin and choose a speed that allows thebackspin to wear off just as the cueball hits the object ball and before ithas picked up natural roll. Doing that consistently at distances of fivefeet or more takes considerable skill.

Stun PracticeAt the top are straight-in shots at various distances. To stop the cueballat impact with no sideways drift requires both slide and a dead-centerhit, not easy at a distance of six feet. Many a position play is ruined whena lack of precision on the object-ball hit causes the cueball to drift right orleft along the tangent line. In the diagram, a centerball hit will suffice forthe 1-ball if firm speed is used. To stop the cueball and make the 4-ballrequires a low hit on the cueball. At the bottom, the goal is to make the 5-ball and let the cueball follow justa few inches. To do that, the cueball must have stopped sliding andpicked up just a little natural roll. Pro snooker players are uncanny atmaking the cueball roll any desired distance after the impact, a shot theycall “stun run-through”

Corey Deuel at the Doctor’s

Story and Photo by: Arthur BaconThree weeks ago, Dr. CueBilliards in Seattle, announcedthat Corey Deuel would becoming on Monday, 22January to “give privatelessons to a customer.” Theannouncement continued,“Corey will have time to give afew other private lessons.” Afew of us began getting in thequeue although times and costremained unknown.Excitement began to mount, especially during the weekendbefore the big arrival. Moreplayers than usual were at theDoctor’s when it opened ateleven Monday morning.“When’s he coming?”everyone asked. “His planegets in around ten tonight,” we were told. By late afternoon, the housewas full; it seemed like every “player” in the Puget Sound was in the frontroom running tables with effortless enthusiasm.Ten came and went. Around eleven somebody said His plane had justgotten in. A few of us hung around till midnight and then went home toanticipatory sleep. For the next four days Corey and his student werehuddled in the back room deep in their Master Class. The rest of uswould glance over now and then, trying to be inconspicuous, hoping topick up even the tiniest pearl from this young phenom. My ears prickedup when I saw Him hold up a ball and say to His student, “My aimingsystem is...” Meanwhile, the one-pocket action in the front room wasfirst-rate among the likes of Danny, Tommy, JD, Harry and others. A fewlucky Dr. Cue regulars got an hour of billiard pedagogy from Corey beforehe took on the crème when school was over.Dumb as it sounds, a lot of us went to the Tuesday night tournamenthoping that Corey Deuel would play. Yeah, and George Bush is going tolearn to say “nuclear!” Anyway, the air was thick with excitement as ballsclicked with brisk authority in anticipation of the action soon to come on“table one.” No such luck as Corey remained in the back room in closeconference with his student and somehow escaped unnoticed aroundten. Waiting was worth it though as Danny and Tommy treated us toanother of their inimitably elegant contests.Wednesday night it was JD who had the honors, taking home a handsome

reward for his efforts, helpedperhaps, by the fact that I wastaking pictures of Corey withoutrealizing that my (digital) camerathrows out a conspicuously brightred focusing beam...the poor guywas probably stunned but toocourteous to come over andshove my camera down mythroat. I don’t know who won whaton Thursday night but when Iarrived at ten on Friday nightHarry Platis and Corey were in aclose one-pocket match with animpressive collection of railbirdsand sharks in the shadows gluedto every stroke. By eleven the firstmatch was over with Mr. Platistaking home the bacon. Shadowynegotiations were whispered, money counted and JD was

appointed to hold the dough and Harry broke to begin another match. As the game progressed it was obvious that Corey was not in his bestform, which is not to say that he did not make some beautiful shots. ButHarry Platis is not a millionaire lawyer for no reason; he was emboldenedby Corey’s indifferent play and at one point, seemingly left with nothing, pulled out a spectacular Z bank to run out his four balls. Apparently,Harry had agreed to play at ten-five but, for some inscrutable reasonCorey gave him an extra point and offered eleven-five plus the break!Notwithstanding Harry’s hubris, why would anyone say to a shark, “Well, tell you what, I’ll give you both legs and bet I can escape!”Harry did play one of the best matches of his life and even kept hismouth shut. And this was not the Corey Deuel who had recently beaten“The Magician.” Once, Harry missed a ball completely and left the cueball down at the far-end rail; ball-in-hand for Mr. Deuel. A whisper wentthrough the crowd, “He’s got ball-in-hand!” Corey just shot it off the railwith eight feet of green between and missed what should have been aduck. A while later, Corey came over to where I was sitting and lamentedto Dan Louie who was standing next to me, that whenever he played onthat particular table he missed rail shots andDan suggested changing chalk. Somebody else called Jeff, one of theowners, who is a master technician, to come down and put a new tip onCorey’s cue. We all wondered why a guy like Corey Deuel didn’t have anextra shaft. But Corey went back to the table and continued makingmystery misses until Harry sank his five balls and a very thick wad ofFranklins was tossed out of the dark onto the shimmering Simonis.Harry drifted off to the side with uncharacteristic modesty while Coreystood furiously beside the table digging his thumbnail into his tip tryingdesperately to rip it off. He broke his nail and the tip remained steadfast.I offered my Leatherman but he stalked back to his chair and shovedeverything in his case and his big eyes darted around looking for solacelike a wet cat. He might have been willing to stay longer but Harryannounced that he had been up since six that morning defending people’srights and he would be back tomorrow to prove that he wasn’t afraid ofanybody. Two of the habitués began a new game of one-pocket and Idrove home sadder and wiser.

By Randy CamantigueUncle Jack’s Billiards & Lounge hosted another 9-Ball B/below tournament on January 27, 28 2007 and ValAlvarado earns the right to be an A-player by proving it on the green felt. Our B-tournaments have been criticizedby some for having good players many would feel are A-players. I would like to take this opportunity to leteveryone know that A-players in Portland area for instance may not necessarily be an A-player in the Seattle /

Tacoma area this isn’t just my opinion but facts of life.To have an A-status as a player in the Seattle/Tacoma area you must win a tournament that has 48 or

more of the best B-players the area has to offer. We have given past B Champions here at UncleJack’s like Marlon Oliveros, James Davee and Val Alvarado a chance to show everybody that they

are indeed A-players in the Seattle/Tacoma area. It’s one thing if someone says you are an A-player but we feel you must prove it to be considered one here at Uncle Jack’s.

Val Alvarado prove it alright by beating Gary G 7-5, Shane S 7-1, George S 7-4, Al Perez 7-3and came in Sunday sending a message to all that’s left in the tournament that he was the oneto beat by dispatching Scott R 8-0 and got on the hot seat by beating a up and comer in

Marvin H 8-4.Our Runner-up Kevin Ross was having a great tournament. After losing to Ben H heregroup and won against Gary G 7-5, Larry D 7-6, Chuckie 8-3, Scott T 8-4, Scott R 8-4,Rocky 8-6, and punch his ticket to the finals by beating Marvin H 8-5. With a one race to

On Saturday and Sunday, February17-18, 2007, the American Legionin Oak Harbor, WA, hosted itsannual 4-Player Team 8-BallTournament, awarding $4,130 inprize money. The tournament wasplayed on 7 - 4x8 tables spreadamong the American Legion, HarborLight Tavern and PW Murphy’s.19 teams for a total of 76 playersshowed up from as far south asLakewood, WA, and as far north asVancouver, BC. The showdown forthe championshipwas between theSchooner Tavern, who were on thepoint, and PC’s Pub,who came upthrough the losers’bracket. In Game 11,at 6-5 in favor of PC’sPub, the Schooner’sL.T. ran the tabledown to the 8-Ball,leaving himself with a

tough 85-degree cut into the cornerfrom near half the table — L.T.made the nasty cut to bring thematch to hill-hill! Don Wirtaman

then stepped up, broke and ran thetable to seal the championship forthe Schooner Tavern, 7-6.1st Place was captured by theSchooner Tavern of Lakewood, WA,who sponsored and paid all fees forL.T., Raul Abenojar, MikeZimmerman and Don Wirtaman.PC’s Pub of Everett, WA, with JeffJimenez, Brad Hornshaw, MikeStevens and Jeff May, hung on for2nd Place.3rd Place went to Jim Masterman,Dave McEvoy, Simon Pickering andGlen Hopkinson, playing for

The 2nd Annual Arizona Desert Dust-Off Bar-Box 10-Ball tournament,

with a payout of over $15,000.00 was played at Alexander’s Sports Baron February 9th thru 11th, 2007. Billy Palmer, fresh off his win two weeksago at the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament in Hollywood, California, came from the one-loss side to defeat Jeremy Jones in the finals of theDustoff. No one can remember, at least for the past decade or two, anArizona field as strong as the one at this years Desert Dust-off. Theplayers came fromtwelve different statesand two even madethe trip to Alexander’sfrom Canada.Billy Palmer defeatedJose Parica in theloser bracket finals toadvance to the onerace to (13) gamesfinals where he met upwith hot seat winner,Jeremy Jones. Billyjumped out to a 10-3lead in the finals thenwaited for his chance to close the match out as “Double J” made his runto close the gap to 11-9. Billy won the next game to get on the hill (12-9)then won the match and the tournament when Jeremy called a foul onhimself in the next game. With Billy on the hill, Jeremy attempted a safebut failed to get a ball to a rail. As Billy approached the table, Jeremyinformed him that he had not “got a rail” and Billy had cue ball in hand.Billy took advantage of a ball in hand 3-10 combo to close out the matchand win his second tournament in two weeks. Billy Palmer collected$5,425.00 for his win. Jose Parica finished in third while Alexander’s

Billy Palmer Tops Jeremy Jones At 2007 Desert Dustoffown Tony Confalone finished fourth. Arizona’s Jimmy Mendoza, with his7th place finish, was the second Arizona player to finish in the top eight.Arizona’s ChuckEvans and MitchEllerman broke the topten with their 9th - 12thfinish. Other Arizonaplayers in the cashwere Mike Williams,Doug Hale, RayRobles, BradJohnson, and JeremyNelson who allfinished 17th - 24th.Justin Whitehead andGus Briseno finished 25th - 32nd. On a special note, Brandon Butler, who can be found practicing and playing league at Alexander’s just aboutevery day or night, also finished in the cash with his 25-32 place finish.Brandon is an eight rated player on the Arizona Ratings list and trulydeserves a special mention when you consider the strength of this 119player field. Well done Brandon!Former #1 in the world, Kim Davenport, and Arizona’s Scott Frost, didnot make the cash. Congratulations to all the players who did cash, anda special congrats to the Arizona players who performed so well againsta dozen or so of the best players in the world.

I was once told by a buddy of myDad’s that the worst part of growingold was that when you checked the“Obits” to see if you were on it youfound all your friends and the longeryou lasted the fewer were left. When Gunzel Whitey passed awayonly two of his friends were at thisold hustler’s funeral, my Dad andme.I am sure that was not the case withFred Mali. I didn’t make it to Fred’sfuneral in New York but I am surethat there were plenty of his friendsthere. Fred was in the center of thisindustry and New York society. Hehad the pleasant demeanor thatmade you feel like he wanted to beyour friend and that he had a truedesire to make you feel comfortableand equal. Very few of us couldclaim to be an equal to Fred Mali.He was very wealthy but you neverknew it. He was a genius but couldcommunicate on every level of hispeers. He was the center of NewYork Society but never mentionedit. His passing will be felt by thosehe called friend, by this industry andby me.I am beginning to feel like Whiteyall of my old friends in the industryare gone. Willie Mosconi, JimmyCaras, Art Schmidt, Steve Mizerak,Dorthy and Jimmy Wise, RonMaidment, H.G. Larson, and Lou

Dunis to name a few. So far I havebuilt over 3000 Pool tables metMillions of people many of whom Icalled friend, but I wonder if any onewill be there for me. Will any oneremember 10 minutes after I amgone?Freddy Had that way to make youremember and on February 1 of thisyear we lost him but he will neverbe forgotten. I first met Fred Mali atthe Jack Tar hotel in San Franciscofor the BBIA Trade show in 1965.Patty Schmit who was a beautifulyoung chick at that time introducedus and we became good friends. Ihad been buying cloth from him andspoken to him on the phone manytimes but seeing him in person wasa thrill. In the 42years that havegone by so quickly I have had thepleasure of seeing and talking withhim a many trade shows and at hisoffice in New York; spending manyhours on the phone picking his brainand having him buy my dinner. Henever let me pick up the check. When he began making cues I washis first customer. There was nevera question if there was a warranteeproblem. I once sold a Rosewoodcue to a woman as a Christmaspresent for her husband. Shereturned it a year later and the buttwas broke in two. I sent it back tothe Mali company and Fred called

to apologize and the new cue wassent next day air no charge. Severalyears later I built a swim pool forthat family and Rodney Schonbornea giant of a man with a very Petitewoman asked why I had replacedthe cue that she had broken overhis head just to get his attention. Itold Fred about it the next time wegot together and he doubled overwith laughter. I once told Fred that Iwas looking for a lathe to repaircues and shortly after that a hugecrate arrived. Fred personally wentto the Junkyard bought an old lathebed rebuilt it himself and sent it to

me without a bill. He later told me itwas the only one he ever remade.Unfortunately It was destroyed inthe great Sheehan’s Pool World firein 1976.I never met Mrs Mali but another ofFred’s friends, Ivan Lee with theSimonis Co. related that she was aRussian Princess Sobasky. Itseems only that they should wedfor Fred Mali was a Prince of a manwho will be sorely missed.--- Pat Sheehan

By Tom Suarez Tournament Director Hard Times BilliardsWell the Flu season has struck in Sacramento and a lot of the playersincluding me got the bug. Most of the afflicted got over it within 7 days. Some weren’t so lucky. It took me10 days to fully recoup and I missedmy favorite weekend of the month.Lucky for Hard Times, Ken Shuman(National Head Referee for theBCA) filled in for me and ran aflawless tournament. Thanks Ken.The One Pocket event had 33players with a $960 pot for the prizefund. Billy Palmer and TonyMelindez ended up splitting the toptwo spots because of the late time and a waiting list that was itching topay the retail time for tables. The 9 Ball event had 42 players and $1350 in the pot for prize money. Ithad been a long time since Chris MacDonald had finished first in thisevent and he did it with a tough mach against local player Jeff Gregory. Our weekly Line tournament has become very popular. The format is toseed all the players by skill, With the top players on table number 1 andlower ranked players on tables 2, 3, 4 and on down to table 16, wherethe lowest skilled players compete. If you win a match on table 5 yournext match is on table 4. If you lose the match on table 5 your next matchis on table 6. This tournament has a time limit. 21/2 hour. Everyone playsone game (8 ball one week 9 ball the next) and report their win. When allthe matches have completed, a new round starts. There can be as manyas 15 rounds of 9 ball and whoever has the most wins get 1st place. Tieswill split. If two players tie for the most amounts of wins, they will split 1stand 2nd place money. It there are 8 places to be paid out, and 8 peopletie for the most wins, they all split the entire pot.First Saturday of the Month One Pocket results Feb 3rd, 20071st $300 2nd $200 Billy Palmer and Tony Melindez3rd $140 Roger Estelle4th $100 Trevor Smith5/6 $70 Chris MacDonald and Don Armstrong7/8 $40 Craig Odem and John HendersonFirst Sunday of the Month 9 Ball results Feb 4th, 20071st $375 Chris MacDonald2nd $250 Jeff Gregory3rd $180 Carl Wilson4th $125 Mike S.5/6 $100 Roger Estelle and Dave Rodden7/8 $75 Tommy Soria and Robert Aldana9/12 $40 Damien Overton, Jeff H., Jim Fabionar

Article from: Vending Times by Marcus Webb (August 2006)The Matrix system is available, factory-installed with any pool table in Global’s

extensive line of models. Retrofit kits can be installedin one hour or less and require no routing or

cutting of the cabinet, because the unit fitsprecisely into the slot designed for the coinmechanism. Kits include all componentsrequired to upgrade traditional tables and arecompatible with most major brands, saidScott Gramstrup. A blinking LCD displayshows player-selectable options for rack, time or tournament modes. The use of a

single LCD backlight tube conserves batterypower. Operators can program the logic board

simply and conveniently with four buttons: up, down, enter and clear. Play pricing is fully operator-programmable in 25-centincrements; time pricing may be adjusted in one-minute increments. The Matrixfeatures an ICT bill validator that accepts quarters and $1, $5, $10, $20 bills, integrated with an Imonex roll-down coin acceptor. The weekly calendar and real time clock allow operators to set a standard play-price and three special pricing structures per day, seven days a week. Operatorsmay also set three daily free play periods. A countdown digital clock displayenables players to enjoy Speed Pool. Free play for league nights, and hours, may be programmed precisely for the appropriate period. A non-resettableelectronic game counter is standard. The Matrix can draw power either from an AC plug-in or from the 12V sealedlead acid battery. The operator or location owner need only plug an extensioncord into the bottom of the table overnight and the system is fully recharged bythe next day. The Matrix will operate from three to five weeks on a single fullycharged battery. It includes a filter that ignores random discharges and identifiesa specific pulse for the coin mechanism, price option button and other inputs.See ad page 35. Wednesday Night 8-Ball$5 entry - Vegas Rules100% AddedStarts at 7PM

After several years in Albuquerque, N.M., the Women’s ProfessionalBilliard Association will be holding its U.S. Open in Lincoln, Rhode Island.A new convention space is currently being added to Lincoln Park andwhen the WPBA arrives, it will only be four months old and ready forworld-class billiard action. The second new venue will replace Peoria, Ill., where the Midwest Classichas been held. It will now be held at the Riverwind Casino located justoutside of Oklahoma City.According to WPBA President Linda Chen, “This region of the countryhas a strong billiard community and the WPBA is excited about buildinga tradition in Oklahoma.”Chen reported in her January/February letter that the most significantchange for the upcoming 2007 season will be how players and events“unfold on television.” All televised events in 2007 will be produced byWinnercomm, America’s largest independent sports production, programdevelopment, marketing services and sales representation company.Winnercomm supplies over 1,500 hours of programming annually toESPN and 13 other national television networks, and has earned 13Emmy Awards.

WPBA Announces Two New Venues;Improved Televised Coverage

drilling the holes for the #6 pockets. One of the tips of his drill came rightthrough the top of the rail, and cut the pocket openings with an axe. Wedo have our work cut out for us on that one.We started on the rails and filled the pocket holes with glass resin filledwith glass shards, cut the ends of the rail to get a square edge and glued

on solid Rosewood pieces to matchthe grain. We then redrilled the holesto 7/8" and inserted brass sleeves. To solve the problem with the shortrails we had to put on new settingstrips, and patch in the worn placesin the veneer. The corners on the legs are openingand the frame could use some help.We will cut the slate at a 45degreeand put in the old wood blockshaped correctly as that age tablewould have had. Just as we got ahandle on this one a table fromSouthern California came in missingall the veneer. Some expert strippedthe veneer off, and coated it withmany coats of varnish. From the pix you can see how

Brunswick made their legs. They are random cut 8/4 popular Piecesedge glued. On the better tables it was veneer on both sides but on thelesser tables just the outside surface was veneered letting the moistureattack the inside bond so the inner surface expands and cracks appearon the edges of the legs. The table belonging to the McKeevers in SunRiver had the outside veneer removed also therefore the only thing holdingthe legs together was the nails in the foot and top cap. We removedthem and reglued the parts ran them through the jointer to smooth thesurfaces and make them flat. We do have an 8" long bed jointer so thatwas easy. We then resurfaced them with 1/8 “ Cherry ply witch is equalto the triple band system that Brunswick used. The legs will take 40 manhours but will be as good as new.We are still in the learning mode and are always open to the nextsuggestion or lesson to learn. Next month we will keep you posted onour progress. If you have any questions or suggestions you can reachme at [email protected] or my cell phone 503-313-8646

Tivos for the upcoming semi-finalsand finals matches from the mostrecent 2007 Carolina Classic whereshe defeated Allison Fisher 7-2 andXioting Pan 7-6 (Can’t wait to seethat one!). The tournament bracketcan be found on the WPBA site. Herfinals match against Xioting was herclosest match. Congrats, GaYoung! Her swift and fluid style is apleasure to watch and in one stroke, she pockets balls that take most ofus minutes to decide on. Little did Iknow when I began this article thatshe would go on to win the nextstop. When you have anopportunity to watch a champion intheir element, it’s so artistic. It’s atrue honor. Her composure whileher opponent is at the table iscommendable and her skills arehighly admired. Watch out, Allison& Karen, Ga Young definitelyproves her worthiness!Samm Diep-House Pro at TableSteaks East in Aurora, Coloradoblog.SammsPocket.com
