In Memory of Terry Stonier

Dan Louie, Paul Potier, Don Wirtiman, Al Perez

By Stephen SpivackA strong field of 41 came in search of glory on February 9th and 10th atMalarkey’s Pool & Brew 2nd annual ‘February Freeze’ 9 Ball Open with theHouse adding $1,000. It was Paul Potierwho early on proved how strong of a playerhe truly is, losing (3-7) to a soaring DanLouie, who coincidently also happened tobe his road partner.Potier then slowly surged off the B-side,handily defeating Bob Wolff (7-1), SteveHanks (7-1), then reaching the moneyonly to steamroll his competition beatingDick Trichler (7-3), Jay Pintar (7-1), CrieghDumo (7-3), Al Perez (7-4), and in thesurprising turn of events completelyblanking Dan Louie (7-0), leaving Dandazed and stunned in the 3rd place spot. The A-side was dominated early on byMalarkey’s own Don Wirtiman, who hadwins over J.D. (7-6), Scott Thurston (7-4), John Plunkett (7-6), Jay Pintar (7-2)and Criegh Dumo (7-4) to face Dan Louie who ran the bottom of the winnersside with authority defeating Rennie Amadeo (7-3), Raul Abenojar (7-6),Paul Potier (7-3), Jay Siongco (7-4) and Al Perez (7-6) to reach the pre-point match facing off against Don Wirtiman, but in a strange turn of event,Louie couldn’t get on the ball, letting Don defeat him (7-3) to sit and wait onthe Point. The top of the B-side was run with authority by J.D. who lost his first match(6-7) against Don Wirtiman only to win his next seven matches with winsover Pat Vice (7-5), Big Al (7-2), Junior Tolentino (7-3), Dannie Stewart (7-6), Jay Siongco (7-4) and Marty Turpin (7-4) only to lose to eventual 4th

Place finisher Al Perez, but what a truly great streak! After Potier stunned Dan Louie (7-0) in what amounted to a twenty-two

minute match, he went on to playDon Wirtiman who was waiting atthe point. The championshipmatch was one race to 13. Thematch early on was controlled byPotier, who led 2-0, but with hisstrong safety play Don Wirtimanwas easily back in the running, tying the match at 4-4, but in theend Paul’s thundering breaks and‘get it done’ attitude proved its bestover Don (13-10) who looked tomake a match of it early, butslowed down in the end.Congratulations to Julie Valdez forwinning top woman over CindySliva and Rhiannon Stewart.$2,640 Total Prize Money

In my Novembercolumn, I brieflymentioned the idea ofplaying against “TheGhost.” The basicidea is that you areplaying some game, such as nine ball, andif you miss, it isconsidered a win foryour opponentbecause The Ghostnever misses. This is

a good game for solo practice and can alsobe modified for a good competitive exercise.Nine ball ghost is usually played by breakingand then taking ball in hand. If you run out, it’sa point for you, but if you miss, it’s a point forThe Ghost. You can play to a particular score, such as a race to 5.We need to cover some other situations thatmight come up. If you scratch on the break, you still get to shoot but anything you madespots up. If you make the nine early, you win, even if it was on the break or a combinationfrom the one ball. Since you don’t really havean opponent, let’s say that all fouls countincluding touching object balls by accident.Sooner or later you will need to learn to becareful at the table, and this is a good placeto start.

PlayingThe Ghost will improve youroffensive skills but do nothing foryour safety play. One way to add adefensive part to the game is toallow one safety per rack. If youmake a good safe, take ball in handagain. You can set your ownstandard for a good safe, but I

propose that it should not allow any direct hitor one-rail kick that’s less than 4 diamondslong. You may also want to reject any safethat allows an easy jump shot for the hit. Inthe diagram are some examples of what Iconsider good and bad safes. The one ball bythe right side pocket is a good safe becausealthough it is not far from the cue ball, thepocket helps block a kick. For one-on-one competition, you can scoreeach rack in a way similar to APA nine ball. Each ball is worth one point and the nine ballis worth two points for a possible 10 pointsper rack. You are allowed to spot any ninemade early if you want but don’t get to countit, so that a nine ball made on the break orhung in the pocket doesn’t destroy yourchance for a 10 in the rack. In challengematches, we usually play ten racks each, andwe allow one rebreak per set for those breakswhere everything just rolls to bad spots. In my September 2004 column — all thecolumns are available on the OTBN web site— there is a description of a form of ghost foreight ball and nine ball that you can modify tomake easier by removing balls. Some feel that a so-called A player should beable to beat the ghost, but this depends a loton the conditions. I’ve seen tough tableswhere The Ghost would have the edge overEfren and Earl. Try playing races to five andk e e p

track of your scores. This will giveyou some idea of your own chancesof running out from a typicalposition. Here’s a hint on nine-ballstrategy: if you can only run out onein 30 racks when playing thestandard ghost, consider riding thenine ball when shooting at the one.

I’m BackSorry for being out of touch for the past fewmonths, but life is not always a bowl ofcherries and I have been sifting through the pits for a while. The good newsis that I am back. Thanx for all of you who have called missing the fewgems that once in a while I have been able to share with you. And I hopethat I can continue to do just that.March 17 of this year marks my 70th year on the planet and May will be my

60th year playing at working onbilliard tables. You notice that I usebilliard as the adjective (it kind ofbugs me that one of our finemagazines is called BilliardsDigest) When I did my stint on talkradio 1010 AM The VOICE, thefirst person who called was MortLuby and he explained that in theswitch from Billiard Digest andBowling Review to What was tobe Billiard Digest he had askedseveral people to submit art workfor the first issue and the one thatwas chosen had used the

incorrect title and it went unnoticed. After that one hit the billiard world itwas too late to change. Just remember Billiards is a noun as we playBilliards on a Billiard Table. I have never covered a Billiard table with felt.People have always made the comment “Are you-re felting the table?“ andthe only thing that raises my hackles more is rubbing my finger nails acrossthe slate. I have seen people go to the fabric store and buy felt to covertheir table and it lasts about a week, since it is just a pressed fabric andhas no strength and it will notwork on card tables.I have been impressed withthe new fabrics from Maliand Imperial. Bothcompanies have very finecloths and they are availablein a Teflon stain protection. The Eliminator is fastest, toughest, best playing billiardcloth I have ever put on atable. The colors are verytrue and stay brilliant.Eliminator is a 100% wool worsted stain protected weave and plays sosmooth and quick that it makes the wimpiest stroke look like a pro’s. Malimakes several grades of improved fabrics. Hydra, available in a 75 % 25%woven woolen style, is a very close shear and is pressed to give a fine playsurface yet is very easy to install. It is very much like the old BrunswickBrunsco # 1 that we used for the 5x10 carom tables before 1970. If you getit with the Teflon bath and pressed it plays quicker but is a little tougher toinstall. Mali’s Vestra is 100% wool worsted and is available with or withoutTeflon.Since both companies are wholesale only you will have to check through adealer or I will be glad to send samples. If you are interested they sent melots of samples that I will be glad to share. Give me a call on my cell 503-313-8646 and we will have a chance to meet and discuss them. I amalways happy to answer any question on any subject as long as it is relatedto Billiards.

TTTTTired of .....ired of .....ired of .....ired of .....ired of .....

By Roger LongAdvanced Certified Instructor

I once had a student who told methat she wanted me to teach her asystem for banking that wouldpocket the ball 100% of the time. After I explained to her that no suchsystem existed (to my knowledge, anyway), she gave me a skepticallook, thanked me for my time, andthen went on her merry way, againin search of her elusive dreamsystem.

But it was that incident that got mestarted thinking about banking and

kicking “systems” and their values, or perhaps even lack of values, interms of learning how to play precision pool.

Let’s look first at a typical banking system. The books will tell you to firstpick a point on the rail that is directly opposite the object ball, and thenimagine a line from that point to the center of the intended pocket, andthen imagine another line from the object ball to the center of theopposing pocket, and then imagine yet another line runningperpendicular from the point of where the first two lines intersect over tothe rail, and where that line contacts the rail will be the point where youaim the object ball.

HUH?

Now let’s look at a typical diamond system for kicking. This systeminvolves assigning numerical values for each of the diamonds andpockets along the long rail to be contacted first, and then assigning adifferent set of numerical values for each of the diamonds and pocketson the opposing long rail, and then assigning a numerical value for thecue ball origin, and then applying the formula C - F =T, whereas C is theCue Ball Origin, and F is the First Rail of Contact, and T is the Third Railof Contact. Therefore, the number of the cue ball origin, minus thenumber contacted on the first rail, will tell you the number that will becontacted on the third rail.

SAY WHAT?

Now I don’t know about you, but that all just seems to be a little toocumbersome for me. What’s wrong with the Equal Angles system? Youknow, it’s that system that old-timers call “Angle In/Angle Out” meaningthat whatever angle a ball goes into a rail, it will rebound out at the sameangle; or at least pretty close to it whenever it is rolling naturally. Giventhat piece of simple knowledge, it is rather easy to predict fairly closelythe path a ball will take when banking off of multiple rails around thetable.

But whatever system you use for finding the angles for your banks andkicks, the important thing to keep in mind is that NO system is perfect. There are too many variables such as ball speed, spin, cushionelasticity, cloth speed, friction factors, and others that can affect theactual angle that will be experienced on each shot.

So remember, systems are just to get you in the ball park. They are notprecise guiding devices.

unwanted kinks in our mechanics. Ithappens to all of us. Maybe we picked upsome bad habits from watching ateammate or perhaps we wore someuncomfortable shoes that unknowinglyaltered our stance. Whatever the case

may be, if we’re in tune with ourown body, chances are we’llrecognize it. We just need to fixit now.If you’ve ever made anymechanical changes to yourgame, you know it’s not easy. Ittakes countless hours of missedshots to develop the new musclememory. And as difficult as that

may be, it may be even more difficult to identify the root of the problem. Ifyou have an illness, it’s easy to take measures to feel better, but if you’renot curing the illness, you might feel better but you’re still not healthy. For instance, a player who incessantly twists his cue on his final followthrough is more often than not compensating for another mechanicalmishap. If his alignment is off or he’s holding on too tightly to his cue, it’snatural to need a slight twist at the end to follow through straightly. However, the twist caused by too firm of a grip could all just be an indirect result tothe grip hand being too far back on the cue or some excess shouldermovement. In this case, simply not twisting in the final follow through wouldnot have solved anything. Here’s another example: A player has developed excess movement witheach warm-up stroke. Her head bobs slightly up and down as her cuemoves leading to a slight hop-up in her final follow through. The obvioussolution would be to simply minimize the movement. “Stay down” right? Inthe case of this player, the excess movement is due to her entire bodybeing too low and too close to the cue ball. This was inhibiting her from afree-flowing, smooth stroke. Her own body was getting in the way. She hadno choice but to move up/down with her cue strokes. Raising her headslightly and moving her entire body away from the cue ball naturallyencouraged a more fluid stroke with less head movement. It may take some time to get to the root of the problem. It may requireseveral band-aid solutions before you realize the cause. Be in tune withyour body. Your body will let you know if something doesn’t feel right. Don’tforce it. Your stance and stroke should feel comfortable and relaxed at alltimes. If not, then maybe it’s time to start figuring out what’s causing thetension.Of course, seeking professional guidance always helps. All the mirrorsand video cameras in the world do not take the place of the knowledge andexperience a professional instructor can share with you. A good instructorhas seen so many variations of strokes and player builds that they canhelp you find something that will work for you.In the end, there’s only so much you can fix without addressing the rootproblem. Don’t just feel better. Get healthy.PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. Oak Harbor Team Tournament

(Oak Harbor continued on page 28)

Champions: Underdogs - Lynnwood area, WAMichael “Rocky” Baird, Scott Chandler, Randy Martin, Scooter

by: Mike CollierOn Saturday and Sunday, February16-17, 2008, the American Legion inOak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual 4-Player Team, Race-to-7, 8-BallTournament, awarding $5,245 in prizemoney. 19 teams, the same as lastyear, for a total of 76 players showedup from as far south as Tacoma, WA,and as far north as Vancouver, BC,and Abbotsford, BC.What a difference! Some majorlessons were learned this time, by allconcerned, from our new tournamentset-up method. For the first time, we were able toconvince club officers that, by adding$500 instead of $200 to thetournament payout, and by rentingenough tables to play the entiretournament at the American Legioninstead of farming matches out to 2-3 other Oak Harbor taverns with inferior tables, more revenue for the clubcould be generated with the tournament.Additionally, an anonymous club member made a donation to more thancover the estimated $325 of revenue that would have come from the pooltables themselves for game play. This means that all tables were open forfree play all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday and that there were no greensfees involved in any of the three tournaments played over those three days. So, between pot money, table rental and greens fees, the club essentiallyadded nearly $1,000 more to this tournament than ever before.

Keep your eyes peeled for our 2-ManPartners 8-Ball Tournament onSaturday and Sunday, March 22-23,2008, as we will again be setting thistournament up under these same newconditions, including no greens fees. However, after the March tournament,it is likely that we will have to startcharging greens fees in theneighborhood of $5-6 per head forlater-upcoming tournaments —determination will be made dependingupon estimated participation andnumber of games projected to beplayed. The club rented just 3 extra tables andset them up in our spacious ballroom. So, the tournament was played on 5– 4x8 bar boxes, 2 fewer tables thanlast year with the same amount (19)of teams. As a result of keeping all of

the play at the club, the tournament actually ran much faster than lastyear! Teams were always immediately available for their matches andthere was no lost travel time back and forth between the American Legionand the other taverns.Previously, playing time was lost between matches due to this runningback and forth between the club and these external locations. Also, matchparticipants called in the remote match results in a far less than timelyfashion or, sometimes, did not even call these results in at all. Thecombination of these two situations had always resulted in an average 20-30 minute loss of playing time between matches! The kitchen ran full-bore all daySaturday and Sunday. Far morerevenue came out of this, as theparticipants were not spread out allover town and liberally patronized theclub’s kitchen. The bar operation alsogreatly benefited from this newcircumstance. This time, there was plenty of “sitting

Recently I sat down with the new owner of Sharky’s to find out exactly whathis plans were for his new adventure.

Rumor had it that Chet was putting up someserious added money for some tournaments thathaven’t been getting a real big response. Iwanted to see if this was true or not, since mywork had been keeping me out of the tournamentcircuit for a couple months.

Much to my liking as a pool player, the rumorswere true, adding $15 a player on a $20 entrywas more than I had heard of in a long time. “I

am willing to do anything to get the players in here to play...within reason ofcourse” Chet expressed as I asked him how he felt about sponsoring ourin-house APA Masters division this spring session. A generous donation ofhalf the cost of the winners trip to Las Vegas in August for the one or twospots we have available to us. For those of us that participate in this eventyou know how big of a sponsor this really is. On top of the beer rounds, t-shirts and the like, Chet is seriously willing to participate in sponsoringSalem pool players in our sport.

The weekly tournaments are now on Monday and Thursday nights. Still an$8 entry, which includes greens fees. Start time is 7:30 for both.

When asked about any changes he plans to make, besides the obviouslybetter menu, he has already replaced the rails on all of the tables thatrequired it, and is doing a great job keeping them felted. Smoke eatershave been serviced and many compliments have come from both poolplayers and general public on how much the smoke has been cut down.Chet also took on the task of remodeling the restrooms, and is in the worksof resolving the seating issue for large tournaments that the BCA and APAhold.

If you haven’t made it down for our new tournaments you should. It’s notjust about the added money but the service has far exceeded that of thepast owners. Come on in, play the tournaments and see for yourself. Asalways they are taking sign ups for the spring session as well as a Saturdayafternoon 1-pocket league. APA Triple Play a.k.a. Masters started in Februarybut there may still be room for more teams depending when you read this.

As soon as I was able to win my fight with pneumonia I made a trip toMedford to visit John Walker and complete his 4 1/2 x 9 Pool table that Ihad re veneered with Brazilian Rosewood , tightened pockets, new cushionsand Pockets. I spent the night at John and Gee Gee’s house and finishedthe table in the morning. It was a very strange table to level since the frameon the Newport is very stiff and the carpet very spongy. John’s Room wasfeatured in Billiards Digest and is outstanding. The house looks out overthe Rogue valley and is beautifully landscaped and has several ponds thatfeature Koi. In the few moments that John isn’t playing pool he sells tropicalfish all over the world. You have seen John in many copies of this newspaper. He is a very accomplished player and always finishes well in theSouthern Oregon tournaments. On tables built over 100 years ago, you would think that gravity would havepulled the frame down in the center. This Newport was high in the centerand took only a few play cards to even the slate seems. As always when Istart to set the slate I pull the screws in the end slate down first. Using a 6ftstraight edge I check for the over all flatness of the surface. I was within.oo5". I went all around the table with the Machinist level and it read rightbetween the lines after adding the required shims. I finished fastening therail cloth, bondod the seems and sanded them an hour later I checked thelevel again and the table changed by two marks; and re adjusted. When Istarted the table took 1/8” on one leg at the head end and 1/4” under bothlegs at the foot. The frame is so stiff that one of the legs at the foot end wasin the air and slowly began to settle. John had commented that the rollswere very strange as the balls approached the pockets and sure enoughthey had sanded the pockets back 4" to make the by the game play muchquicker and I had filled smoothed out the entry with bondo. So I assumedthat was the cause of the funny rolls and as soon as we assembled thetable John tried the slow roll shots. The balls rolled away from the rail at thefoot end but the level showed it had settled again and the balls were defyingthe laws of nature and rolling up hill. On the other side of the table the ballrolled into the rail, but far more than the bubble showed. I climbed underthe table and part of the slate frame was missing.A piece of 3/4 in and a wedge was all it took to bring the low side up tocorrespond with the rest of the table. Tightening the screws in the foot endpulled the slate down in the corner and it was only in the first 1/8 in of thatslate. In calling John, he says the table is still playing well and he and hisfriends are happy with all the changes.People ask me how long does it take to fix a table and my answer is fromthe time I start until I am satisfied it is the best that can be done. .On thatjob with the drive time it took 40 hours. Right now I am finishing the reveneer and rebuild of a set of rails to a Newport in the Carolinas. I have lotsof old piano keys for new sights and the owner is re veneering the legs andframe. Rebuilding a set of rails and aprons that go to Arizona and workingon direction for installing cushions and cloth that are clear enough for theaverage person could follow. See you next month any question 503-313-8546

Clubs and Sticks Family Billiards LeagueFrom: Gene MillerFamily’s $1,000-added BCA 8-ball league - $1,000 added by National PoolLeague. Players earn eligibility for BCA Championships in Las Vegas andOregon. This season’s championship match saw Dead Stroke winning eleven ofthe first sixteen games to cinch a victory over Screw U2. Even though itappears to be a decisive win, Dead Stroke’s winning margin in the secondand third rounds was only three balls. It was Dead Stroke’s 34-11 fourthround score that sealed the match, and they will get the tallest trophies. The NPL will pay their entry fee in Las Vegas if they choose to go.Congratulations to captain Rich Lingbaoan and his teammates, EmilynCallado, Billy Hart, Colin Mazaika, Chadd Taylor, Torre Taylor, and PattyWest. Third place trophies go to the Hit Men, who were behind Tim’s Teamall night but came through with a 40-24 final round to win the match byeight balls.2nd place - Screw U2: Captain Mary Rakin, Piper Anselmo, Jude Bautista,Elmer Diwa, Ernesto Reyes, Glenn Saoit3rd place - Hit Men: Captain Yoon Sim, Lawrence Ai, Alvin Jang, AnandKrishnan, David Lew, Gene MillerAWARDS PARTY: Thanks to Family Billiards for the free table timeand pizza, chicken and veggies! Along with trophies for our top three teams, special acknowledgment was given to Colin Mazaika and Mary Rakin.Colin’s 951 average and .909 winning percent are both the highest everrecorded in my BCA leagues dating back to Spring 1992. Mary Rakin haswon BCA Junior 9-ball championships on two continents, most recentlylast summer when she won her second trophy in Sydney, Australia.BEST EVER: Colin Mazaika took home $50 for his .909 winning percentand another fifty for his 14-game winning streak. In week eight he wasstopped going for number fifteen, losing 10-6 to Yoon Sim. He then won 23of the next 24 games, losing 10-7 to Mary Rakin in the middle of that streak. He had another 14-game streak going when John Rexroat broke and ran arack against him in week 18. He finished out the season winning 13 of 15games, losing only to Ernesto Reyes and Bill Lee and finishing with a 50-5record. In the playoffs he won all eight games he played. We might neversee a better performance in this league.MOST IMPROVED: Alden Huen, finishing his twelfth season withus, got this plaque and $50 award AGAIN, raising his average 17.5 percentfrom 584 to 686. Close behind Alden were Anand Krishnan (15.9%) andClem Lau (13.7%).SUPER RING GAME: Darrel Haslip had the good fortune to acceptthe task of making a $100 ball that was sitting on the lip of the cornerpocket. This, we could call Living Right. He was the 32nd shooter. ErnestoReyes had the best run, eight balls for a $40 take-home. John Logan madefive balls, and Billy Hart and Yoon Sim each made four. Glenn Saoit madetwo balls and picked up the one-pound box of peanut brittle. And, even with27 players the first five shooters got a second chance in our seasonal 30-ball marathon. Enjoy that coffee mug, Darrel.

Also for the first time, a free 802.11b/gWi-Fi Hotspot with full, free, wireless internet access and WPA-2/TKIPsecurity, was made available for the entire three days and we intend tomake this available during future tournaments. The extra tables also enabled us to run a $5 “Warm-Up,” Race-to-2, 8-Balltournament for a full sheet of 32 players on Friday night in under 4-1/2hours. Additionally, something we had never before been able to do, weran a $10 “Last Chance” 8-Ball tournament for all players whose teamswere out of the money on Sunday. We played this on the open tables whilethe main tournament was finishing up. It was a Race-to-3 on the front,Race-to-2 on the back, and back to a Race-to-3 for all money matches. In the Main Tournament, 1st Place was captured by The Underdogs, anindependent team from the Lynnwood/Bothell area of WA. Members of thevanquishing team included Scott Chandler, Scooter, Randy Martin, alongwith Michael “Rocky” Baird, who won the final game to clinch the tournamentchampionship for The Underdogs.
