Mr and Mrs Fowler left for their home near Bran ¬ denburg Mrs Fowler is the daughter of Mr Mark Taylor of Oweneboro and a sister to Mrs Mattie Collins of this city She visited here quite frequently and has many good friends in Clover portMr Fowler is a well thought of farmer of Meade county and owns a splendid farm The News wishes them perfect happiness and unlimited prosperity HIGHWAYORAINGLTiles Stone Roads SOME POINTS ON THE WORK Underdrainajjo Below Surface With Farm Tiles a Great Protection Sid Ditches That Hold Water Make an Inferior Roadway Tile drainage says Professor Ira O Baker Is the very best preparation fot a gravel or a stone road Gravel or broken stone placed upon an undralned foundation is almost sure to sink grad- ually ¬ whatever Its thickness whereas a thinner layer upon an undcrdralncd roadbed will give much better service Roads tiled without gravel are better than roads graveled without tile The road should be uudordrnlncd so as to keep the water level woll below the rond surface In most localities this can bo accomplished reasonably well by laying a line of farm tile three or three and a half feet bolow the road surface along one side of the road- way ¬ It Is sometimes claimed that thoro should bo a the on oach sIde of the road Sonic writers on good roads advocate tho use of a line of tile under tho mid ¬ dle of the traveled portion aud some advocate a line on each side of tho wheel way The object sought by those l tiles Is rapid drainage and therefore it U urged that they should lie laid near the furfnce It is doubtful whether any water will reach the tile since the road surface when wet la muddled by the traffic which prevents the water percolating through the soil and It is curtain that In clay or loam the drain ¬ age thus obtained is of no practical value More than one farmer has tried to drain his barnyard by laying the near the surface always without ap ¬ preciable effect While a line of tile on one side of the road Is usually sufficient there is often a great difference as to the sIde on which It should bo laid If one side of the road Is higher than the other the tile should bo on the high side to Intercept tho ground wator that is flowing down the slope under the sur ¬ faceThe tine should be laid in the bottom of the silt ditch below the frost line Of course the tile should have a uni ¬ form grade and a sufficient fall and an adequate outlet The size of the tile required will depend upon the length of the line and tho grade of the ditch but local experience in farm drainage Is likely to be a better guide than any general statement that can be made Farm drainage Is almost certain to precede road drainage in any particu ¬ lar locality Tho side ditches are to receive tho water from tho surface of the traveled way and should carry It rapidly and entirely away from the roadside They are useful also to Intercept and carry off the water that would otherwise flow from the side hills upon the road Ordinarily they need not be deep and If possible should have a broad flar ing side toward the traveled way to prevent accident If a vehicle should bo crowded to the extreme side of + the roadway The outside bank should be flat enough to prevent caving The proper form of ditch Is easily made by the usual road machine or road grad- er ¬ The side ditch should have a freo outlet Into some stream so as to carry the water entirely away from the road No good road can bo obtained with Bldo ditches that hold the water until It evaporates fl lV

SOME POINTS ON THE WORK

Underdrainajjo Below Surface WithFarm Tiles a Great Protection SidDitches That Hold Water Make anInferior Roadway

Tile drainage says Professor Ira OBaker Is the very best preparation fota gravel or a stone road Gravel orbroken stone placed upon an undralnedfoundation is almost sure to sink grad-ually

¬

whatever Its thickness whereasa thinner layer upon an undcrdralncdroadbed will give much better serviceRoads tiled without gravel are better

than roads graveled without tileThe road should be uudordrnlncd so

as to keep the water level woll belowthe rond surface In most localitiesthis can bo accomplished reasonablywell by laying a line of farm tile threeor three and a half feet bolow the roadsurface along one side of the road-way

¬

It Is sometimes claimed thatthoro should bo a the on oach sIde ofthe road

Sonic writers on good roads advocatetho use of a line of tile under tho mid ¬

dle of the traveled portion aud someadvocate a line on each side of thowheel way The object sought by those l

tiles Is rapid drainage and therefore itU urged that they should lie laid nearthe furfnce It is doubtful whetherany water will reach the tile since theroad surface when wet la muddled bythe traffic which prevents the waterpercolating through the soil and It iscurtain that In clay or loam the drain ¬

age thus obtained is of no practicalvalue More than one farmer has triedto drain his barnyard by laying thenear the surface always without ap ¬

preciable effectWhile a line of tile on one side of

the road Is usually sufficient there isoften a great difference as to the sIdeon which It should bo laid If one sideof the road Is higher than the otherthe tile should bo on the high side toIntercept tho ground wator that isflowing down the slope under the sur¬

faceThetine should be laid in the bottom

of the silt ditch below the frost lineOf course the tile should have a uni ¬

form grade and a sufficient fall and anadequate outlet The size of the tilerequired will depend upon the lengthof the line and tho grade of the ditchbut local experience in farm drainageIs likely to be a better guide than anygeneral statement that can be madeFarm drainage Is almost certain toprecede road drainage in any particu ¬

lar localityTho side ditches are to receive tho

water from tho surface of the traveledway and should carry It rapidly andentirely away from the roadside Theyare useful also to Intercept and carryoff the water that would otherwiseflow from the side hills upon the roadOrdinarily they need not be deep andIf possible should have a broad flaring side toward the traveled way toprevent accident If a vehicle should bocrowded to the extreme side of+ theroadway The outside bank should beflat enough to prevent caving Theproper form of ditch Is easily made bythe usual road machine or road grad-er

¬

The side ditch should have a freooutlet Into some stream so as to carrythe water entirely away from the roadNo good road can bo obtained withBldo ditches that hold the water untilIt evaporates
