Bewdley Museum Education ServiceLocal schools have been involved in a range of excitingprojects at Bewdley Museum. Inspiration came fromartefacts and objects from the Museum’s collection tocreate ‘A Child Inspired’ – this year’s exhibition in theSevern Gallery throughout April and May.

130 pupils from St Anne’s and Bewdley Primary helped toplant more than 60 fruit trees and bushes in the newJubilee Gardens community Orchard. They also made clayinformation plaques which will be placed next to ‘their’trees.

Children enjoyed decorating eggs, mask making, creatingclay and collage designs, alongside other crafts over theEaster holidays. Plenty of fun activities are planned for thesummer holidays. Visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or ask for the ‘Summer Programme’ in the TouristInformation Centre.

Many schools have snapped up places for the Blitz andEvacuation programme linked with the Severn ValleyRailway. New programmes including Canals, Orchards and FlorenceNightingale will be launched over the summer. Again, checkour bulletins or website for more details.

Community BuildersHello, we are Emma Astley and Jared Reid, and we are thenew Community Builders at the Bewdley DevelopmentTrust. This is a little introduction into what we have beendoing and how we have found it so far. On the first daywe were creating and updating databases. We then gotthe afternoon to explore the beautiful scenery ofBewdley, and not only that, but also some local food fromPiccolo's.

We have really enjoyed the past three weeks working atthe Bewdley Development Trust. We work with afantastic team who welcomed us straight away and wehave learnt so much in such a short time. Our main goalis to promote tourism in Bewdley by building a strong reputation in the neighbouringcommunities. We are coming up with many different ways to do this every day. We areespecially looking forward to Discover Bewdley to see how well it takes off.

So far, we have created a database about the social and community groups and businessesin Bewdley. At the moment, we are working on creating websites that are reasonablypriced and simple to use, not to mention reliable.

Bring me Sunshine!

I think that June with its long light evenings is possibly my favourite month. We can be fairly sure that, even with our weather doing rather odd thingsthese days, we won’t have to don hat and gloves when we venture out.Given a bit of luck, there’ll be days when al fresco dining isn’t completely outof the question. And for us gardeners, June is, in the words of the song, bustin’ out all over.

Next door, Florence has also noticed the changing season, andis feeling – well, broody. Alas! She has at last met her match. Her erstwhile friend, Doris, has also decided to perpetuate her species and hastaken to her duties as a mother with considerable bellicosity. Florence, deniedher own maternity ward, has become most upset. This has resulted in herproducing a sort of mini-egg, which as you can see from the photo, is frankly

not up to scratch. I think Florence needs counselling. Unless Nigel sends Doris for angermanagement.

Fortunately, Bewdley is a happier place this month with several of our big events happening.I’m looking forward to the Pub and Club regatta; I have friends taking part this year so I’ll goand yell at them from the bank. The carnival is always a great day for the town; I’ll try andpersuade some of my city-dwelling friends to come and join in. And finally for my diary, theOpen Studios will give me the chance to go round the town and marvel at the talent we havein Bewdley.

Let’s hope for good weather to tempt in the tourists and make the month a happier one fortraders and townsfolk alike after our long months of cold and disruption.

(Scene: Hotel room in Benidorm. Thursday 15th April, evening. Enter Kay and daughter.)Husband “Want to hear the good news?” (Dramatic pause. He tells her about volcano inIceland.) Kay (shrugging) “And?” Thus began our role in the ‘Brits stranded abroad’ drama. We were among the lucky ones;we’d booked a package holiday. Our stranded days fell into the following routine; am – Check notice board for news of departure. Enjoy breakfast including glass of cava.Stroll along sea front and wander around Benidorm’s beautiful Old Town. Return andcheck notice board before lunch. pm – Siesta. Take daughter swimming and try to readSpanish magazines. Have meeting with holiday rep who has no news. Occasionally meet repin other hotels, all of which seem grander than ours. Evening meal. Stroll along beach front, back through Old Town and home, dodging nightclub hawkers. What an ordeal. The exciting bit was the flight home. Following a slight delay before boarding, the crewinstructed us to sit and buckle up immediately, as coach loads continued to unload andscramble on, unable to believe their luck. Collective adrenaline made everything feel moreintense; all we needed was Chuck Norris to make a death defying leap onto the plane as itactually took off and we would have had the final scene of a brilliant film. .When we arrived back at the airport car park, my car battery was flat. Kay Sanderson

When we went to Morocco for the Easter holidays, we werelooking forward to riding camels in the Sahara desert. Little did weknow that, to get home, we would end up using virtually everyother form of transport you can think of – except an aeroplane! We were caught by the volcano which meant our flight home wascancelled and we had to get home overland. The first leg was by sleeper from Marrakech to Tangiers in the north of Morocco. AtTangiers, we got a ferry across to Spain where a kind businessman gave us a lift in his taxito Malaga, where the nearest international train station was. From Malaga we hoped to get a sleeper direct to Paris but, due to a French train strike, notrains were going across the border so we boarded a sleeper train to Barcelona where, wejoined a queue in the bus station to see if we could get a bus to France but had to waituntil the next day. So we persuaded mum and dad to take us to the zoo which wasfantastic – the big cats were the best. Barcelona is fab. Next day, we got the bus to Montpelier in France. Our Auntie Margaret in Aberdeen hadbooked us on a train from there to Paris – the strike was over - so we got on and spedvery fast to Paris – TGV’s go at 180 miles an hour! It was late when we got there so wewent straight to a hotel. Next day, we enjoyed a day in Paris, visiting the Eiffel Tower. Thatevening, we caught a train to Cherbourg then got on the ferry. When we got off, a coachto London was about to leave so we hopped on then changed to another coach to Lutonwhere we picked up our car. We arrived home about 4 o’clock on Tuesday after five daystravelling. Ailsa Roper (13) & James Roper (11)

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Community News

More News from Gabi the Puppy-walkerDue to a skin condition and the need for antibiotics, mynew puppy Frazzle's first 'walkies' were delayed by fiveweeks. Fortunately, she is a natural and has taken to herlead, and the demands of walking, well. She loves theattention she receives in the town and is probably theonly one missing the roadworks: the noise andmachinery, extra pats and pleasure of walking along atraffic free High Street!

A very calm and placid 5 month old, her only vice isbarking. Sorry shop owners and customers - we areworking on it! Initially, overly confident with other dogs, she has been 'put in her place' by the great dogs and owners who frequent the fields behindthe High Street. Thanks! She is far more respectful of them now and shadows them from adistance as they enjoy their exercise. I think she has great potential as a guide dog.

News of Arty is good. He should complete his basic training at the end of May and will thenmove on to his advanced course at a different centre. I have been invited to Leamington tosee him working later this month. His trainer describes him as a tortoise rather than a hare, but we all know the outcome of that story.

It was good to chat to someone about puppy walking/boarding last month. Do get in touch ifinterested. (01299 405023) Gabi Wootton.

Glamorous Life of an Opera Singer Part 3This month’s story is about that friend who got stuck in the railway siding. He let me in on an even more embarrassing experience. Many years ago,he had done 'extra-chorus', i.e. he had been employed to replace anabsent member of the full time chorus of a well-known opera company.

He'd done this a lot, and had a well-worn routine. He would be called torehearse the music and ensure it was memorized at a rehearsal room

somewhere in London. On the day of the performance, he'd get himself to the theatre andmeet with an assistant director, who would fill him in on what moves he must make on stagein the performance. On this occasion, the action involved a scene in which the malechoristers carried off lots of women choristers, dragging them off-stage to do unspeakablethings. The assistant director told him to watch out for this happening, and when he saw therest of the male chorus make their move, he must follow suit, grab a woman, and carry herstruggling body off to the wings. The performance duly began, and my friend went on stagewith the others, and looked around at the women, choosing a smallish but pleasingly beautifulspecimen to carry off later. When the moment came, he sprang into action and grabbed hisgirl. She struggled wildly, as one would expect, but he was quite able to carry her off despiteher flailing limbs.

When he finally planted her back on the floor, she turned on him, and in a very heavy Italianaccent screamed, “Idiot-a! You have-a made-a me miss-a my aria!”

Bad choice! He’d picked the leading lady.

A Memorial toStanley Baldwin?

In last month’s issue, the editor asked whyBewdley has no memorial to StanleyBaldwin.

I initiated a public debate on this when Iwas Mayor of the town exactly 20 yearsago. Baldwin was a son of the town,Member of Parliament for Bewdley, andPrime Minister no less than three timesbetween the wars. I found that thesentiment in the town was very muchagainst the idea.

I think this was for two main reasons:firstly we prefer to honour figures ofculture, poets, artists and composersrather than politicians. Secondly, Baldwin’slegacy is seen as somewhat toxic, beingcoloured by the failure to rearmadequately before 1939 and the GeneralStrike of 1926. At least no-one mentionedthe Abdication Crisis of 1936, so somescars have healed! This reputation may beunfair, and he may be due a reassessmentby history, but I suspect that the sentimentin the town would not be enthusiastictoday. The only clear supporter of the ideawas the then MP, Anthony Coombes …perhaps an early example of theConservative-Lib Demmery that is sofashionable as I write three days after theelection!

I also think that we may not need amemorial so much now. The BewdleyMuseum has an excellent enlargedcollection of Baldwin memorabilia ondisplay, with interpretation. The Museumnow has free entry and many visitors eachyear. It is very well run, and there is anexcellent “Friends” organisation. So Isuggest that we leave it to the Museum tokeep the Baldwin memory and itssignificance alive. Robert Barbour

A Night at the OperaWow! Wow! And Triple Wow!

What more can I say? If you missed the treatthat was Bewdley Choral Society’s “A Nightat the Opera” on Saturday 24th April at St.Anne’s Church, then make sure you nevermiss another (the next concert is 20th No-vember).

How lucky were we to have the opportunityto hear the wonderfully talented sopranoLianne Birkett and tenor Benjamin Gilham, straight from the Birmingham Conservatoire.Their performance of the Love Scene fromAct 1, La Boheme (Puccini) left me with tearsstreaming down my face. I’m sure I wasn’tthe only one to be so emotionally moved bythe whole concert.

I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful smalltown as Bewdley and to be able to enjoysuch a fabulous evening’s entertainment.Hang on though.........I’m not actually thatkeen on opera!!!! Barbara Revill.

An Easter treatA special trip had been planned for 2ndBewdley Brownies – a trip to Cadbury’sWorld. We set off with Mark our ownpersonal coach driver on a lovely sunnyday.

Arriving at Cadbury’s the girls wantedtheir first sample of chocolate so we hadto oblige with the melted chocolate. Not agood idea before climbing frames andlunch. We then did our tour, learnt aboutthe history of Cadbury, had MOREchocolate and a fun ride through Cadabra. It was then to the shop and dash round tosee the show before going back home withchocolate tops and faces.

At the end of the day a womanapproached the Guiders to say she hadfollowed the Brownies around Cadbury’sand would like to say something abouttheirbehaviour. My heartsank – sheproceededto tell methat theywere a wellbehaved, polite group of girls but still wereobviously having fun and what a pleasure ithad been to meet them!!

April, Annual Meeting of the Town Council (Mayor-Making) in May, Mayor’s Sundayin June, Bewdley Festival Service in October and Remembrance Services inNovember with a morning service at St. Anne’s and an afternoon service at AllSaints.

Town Maintenance15 The Town Council pays for the servicing of the Town Clock on St. Anne’s Church

Tower.16 The Town Council owns nine bus shelters. All these bus shelters have been

provided from funds of Worcestershire County Council but are maintained by theTown Council and as such are cleaned on a two monthly basis at an annual costof approximately £800.00. The cleaning contract is about to be relet by tender, the present contractor having given notice to terminate the arrangement whichhas lasted for some four years.

17 The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memoryof people for whom Bewdley was a special place.

18 The Town Council owns and maintains 7 lifebelts on Severnside North, SevernsideSouth and in Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis.

19 The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street which areused for Christmas Lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hangingbaskets. It is unfortunate that from time to time these are damaged by vehicleswhich then necessitates repair.

20 The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all organisations in the town are able to advertise on this, subject to liaising with theTown Clerk as to a suitable slot in the diary being available. Due to high demand,it is becoming necessary to limit advertising to a period of one week per event.Any adverts must also comply with the requirement that they are not too wordyas to cause a distraction for motorists.

21 The Town Council has continued to pay the running costs and maintenance of theWyre Hill Play Area which costs about £4,500.00 per annum.

22 The Town Council through its Councillors continues to keep a watchful eye on thetown and throughout the year the Town Clerk takes up a wide range of matterswith Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and otherappropriate councils and statutory agencies.

23 The condition of Bewdley’s rural footpaths is monitored by the two Footpath Officers.

24 The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointedby the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work tobe done on trees in the Town.

25 The Lengthsman is now fully operational and carries out a wide range of minorhighways work in the town and his work has had a considerable effect on areasof the town that were previously not maintained. The Council has agreed inprinciple to having the Lengthsman extend his duties so as to provide gritting forthe main town centre pavements. This followed the treacherous conditions of lastwinter when it was quite evident that clearance of snow and ice and gritting of

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 31: The Bridge - June 2010

pavements was no longer within the remit of the County or District Councils due tolack of resources.

Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights26 The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall and

around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up for the summer andwinter seasons. The Council has agreed to an increase in the budget for flowersand planters etc given the wish to enhance the appearance of the town centre tomake it more attractive for both visitors and residents alike.

27 The Town Council provides and pays for the hanging baskets in Load Street andparts of Severnside South.

28 The Town Council currently provides the Christmas Lights which are switched onfor a period of about six weeks. It pays the cost of installation, maintenance anddismantling of £3,900 together with the cost of the electricity. Some of thedisplays on the lamp posts have begun to fail and the Town Council has budgetedto replace these in time for Christmas 2010 using as well the sum of £1,250 paidfrom the County Council’s Economy Group.

29 The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which forms part ofthe Carnival entertainment in June.

Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust30 Now effectively responsible for the Millennium Green situated off Shaw Hedge

Road in Wribbenhall, the Town Council has set up a Working Group which hasmet when necessary to review maintenance such as litter picking and grasscutting which is carried out free of charge by the Probation Service.

Town Planning31 Through its Planning Committee, the Town Council maintains an active role in

planning matters. All planning applications in Bewdley are referred by the DistrictCouncil to the Town Council Planning Committee for its views as statutory consultees.

32 On 27th May there was a Special Meeting of the Planning Committee to consideran application by Wyre Forest Community Housing Group for the erection of 46affordable dwellings on the site of the former Wribbenhall Primary School in ShawHedge Road. The Committee recommended refusal on a number of groundsnamely the adverse effect on highways, risk of flooding, sewage, generalinfrastructure and radiation risks from the overhead power lines. The Committeewere disappointed that despite making representations in support of thosereasons, planning consent was given by the District Council.

33 All Committee Meetings of the Town Council are open to the public.Communication with residents34 Full agenda and minutes of all Town Council Committees are available for viewing

on the town’s website (www.bewdley.org,uk) and “The Town Council News” is

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 32: The Bridge - June 2010

published every month in The Bridge magazine. This includes significant items fromthese meetings and additional information relevant to people in Bewdley. Copiesof minutes of all Council and Committee meetings are also available on the threetown notice boards situated in the Load Street Car Park, on Load Street outsidethe Mayor’s Parlour and inside the covered entrance to The Guildhall. They canalso be viewed at the Library.

Bewdley Community Health & Facilities Group Project35 The Town Council continues to be actively involved as a member of the

Community Health & Facilities Group Project. This involves the redevelopment ofthe site off Load Street comprising the medical centre, library and St George’sHall. Further plans are awaited though progress with the Scheme is slow due tofunding restrictions.

Youth Facilities36 The Town Council continues to support the Youth Café through contributions and

activities of individual councillors. It has now been open for a year and isregarded as one of the most successful in the local area with its design, manage-ment and workings being used as a basis for similar ventures in other towns.

Quality Status37 The Town Council retains its Quality Status that was granted for a four-year

period from 2008.Policing in the Town Centre and Anti-Social behaviour38 The Town Council continues to monitor anti-social behaviour in the town and is

working with the Police and other relevant parties to try to eliminate suchbehaviour. Councillor representatives regularly attend local PACT meetings andmeetings of the Wyre Forest Police Consultative Group.

Shops and Cafes on Severnside North and Severnside South39 The Town Council is working with the Licensing Section of Wyre Forest District

Council to ensure the tables and chairs put out by the pubs and cafes along theriverside do not cause any obstruction to pedestrians bearing in mind both roadsare used by vehicles as well. The Council is keen to encourage a “promenade”feel to the riverside to attract visitors and tourists to the town and for the localresidents to benefit as well. However, the Council recognises a proper balance hasto be struck between all interests and hence the continued monitoring and workthat is ongoing to try to achieve that outcome.

Allotments40 During the course of the year a group of residents formed the Transition Bewdley

Land Group whose aim is to increase the amount of local food that is grown andeaten in the town and to encourage sustainability in food production. Not havingany allotments within Bewdley, the Group petitioned the Town Council to considerthe provision of allotments which it is statutorily required to do. The Council

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 33: The Bridge - June 2010

supports these aims and is working with the Group and Bewdley Development Trustto identify a suitable site(s)

Water & Gas Mains Replacement in Bewdley41 These works have been a source of disruption to the town especially the traders

and small businesses who have seen their turnover reduced as a result of passingtrade diminishing substantially during the period that the contractors have beenworking. The Council was somewhat concerned in the autumn to learn fromSevern Trent who were coordinating the works that their intended contractor,Balfour Beatty would no longer be carrying out the work. The contractors,Enterprise plc were appointed in their place. A meeting with their representativesand those from Severn Trent and National Grid took place at the Guildhall on30th November at which traders and residents were able to attend to askquestions. The work commenced immediately in the New Year and is due to havefinished in early May.

Finances42 The bulk of the Town Council’s income comes from the Precept. This is the sum

of money which the Town Council determines should be paid by the CouncilTaxpayers of Bewdley, and is collected on its behalf by Wyre Forest DistrictCouncil.

43 One of the dilemmas which the Town Council faces every year in common with alllocal authorities is a desire to provide more services and facilities for the peopleof Bewdley against a need to keep Town Council Tax payments at a reasonablelevel. This year when setting the budget, there was a consensus from the outsetof not increasing the Precept for Town Council purposes. When the budget was finally fixed by the Council in February, it was able to confirm that there would beno increase in the amount levied on each household.

Green GardeningWhilst much of our effort is to produce a beautiful garden it’s often good to have a wild areabut we need to be sure what we’re trying to encourage into the garden and what is notwanted.

What is desirable is a harmony between visitors and support for their work in keeping ourgarden maintained and the pests reduced. We have to establish a few things; a varied habitat, areas for breeding and shelter, feeding and foraging and a sustainable area.

A warm compost heap may encourage hedgehogs to take up residenceand then flourish on slugs and snails. Compost also attracts smallrodents and other wriggling things, which in their turn also bring insecteating birds to the garden. It’s said there are no weeds, just flowers inthe wrong place so don’t be frightened to have a few stinging nettlesabout to bring in moths and butterflies; brambles provide safe coverand their fruit goes on to feed furry friends who in turn feed on other

invertebrates. Buddleia for bees and butterflies, honeysuckles and lavender also do much thesame job; they attract flying insects for pollination.

Birds, bats, beetles all need homes and we can provide for eachquite simply, with nesting boxes, decaying wood and for mice andvoles build a rockery. Each little animal contributes to the cycle ofclearing up and regeneration. Of course there are less subtlemethods with slug pellets, chemicals, traps and weed killers but

nature’s way may be easier, friendlier and perhaps more attractive.

I stand amidst my cloth of goldHave these been there since Tudors old?King Henry’s cloth could scarce have been

More glorious than this golden sheenSo numerous my careless tread

Could crush their life & leave some deadYou little know how well you strive

To keep my flagging soul aliveAnd when your flowers are nearly over

Replacement comes with bright red cloverAnd tall aggressive plants that tryTo dominate all those more shyBut within these plants so lowlySeeds of life remain and slowlySurely to return next year

And year on year give endless cheerGod bless my cowslips for such joyI would the world could so enjoy.

Dear Readers,

With the hot summer nights and the WorldCup upon us I expect Bewdley town centreto be very busy with people enjoying theoccasional beverage from one of our manyfine establishments. I think it is importantthat people feel that they can enjoy theoccasion and go home safe and happy.

Although incidents of disorder in the towncentre have reduced by one hundred overthe last year when compared to theprevious year, we are still working hard toreduce this further by increased highvisibility patrol of Officers and CSO’s onthe beat.

This point leads me on to the role ofSpecial Constables and the magnificentsupport they provide here at Bewdley.Special Constables are volunteers who donot receive any financial reward for all thelong hours and late nights they work onPolice duties.

I personally work with a number SpecialConstables and am very happy to do so. Inmany ways they are the unsung heroes ofBewdley as they assist with public order, traffic enforcement and our manycommunity events.

With that in mind I hope that you willshare my appreciation of Section OfficerDavid Taylor, Special Constables MartinBromley, Russell Fox, Hazel Webb andAmelia Baker for their dedication and hardwork as part of the Local Policing Teamhere at Bewdley, under the leadership ofNorth Worcestershire Special

Commandant Nick Marlow.

I would also like to make particularmention of Clive Webster who untilrecently worked tirelessly as a Special atBewdley for over twenty years!

I would like you, our community, to feelreassured that we will be doing everythingin our power to keep our beautiful historictown centre free from disorder and rowdybehaviour.

Also I would like to send out a clearmessage to the minority of people whocommit drunken disorder in the town thatthis will not be tolerated and action will betaken against you.

I will sign off by wishing you all a happy andenjoyable summer and let’s hope Englandbring home the World Cup!

Best Wishes.

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter from Mr AB Whatton. I thinkthe picture he paints of Lyttleton Rd problemsneeds closer examination.

In my capacity as Chair of Neighbourhood WatchI contacted the Local Police in January 2010 anddiscussed the matter with them. Because of theconcern by the Local Policing Team a discretenight time police presence was set up. Fiveyouths were stopped as a result of a phone callsubsequently action taken.

The result ? No more reports of rowdiness byanyone since February, so hardly an indictmentof local youths.

Dear editor,

I don’t think people who live on the west side ofthe river realise how lucky they are to haveparks where people can hang out at theweekend.

I live in Wribbenhall and there aren’t any parksfor the older kids, only playgrounds for the youngchildren. I am 15 years old and if I want to hangout with my mates I have to stand on the streetand then the older generation grumble andmoan.

Preparations for Pub’n Club

May-Day bank Holiday weekend saw thestart of preparations for the Pub’ ClubRegatta which will take place on June 5th.

Crews of four people who have neverrowed before, or only rowed very littleare now heading up and down (oroccasionally straight across!) the river asthey train for the knockout races on theday. They are coached by currentmembers of the rowing club and use thedistinctive wooden boats which have beenexpertly restored.

Learning to row all at the same time isone of the biggest challenges, and the aimis for a crew to progress from the early‘spider-on-roller-skates’ effect to asmooth action where all four oars dropinto the water at the same moment! Thisis an exhilarating feeling as the combinedeffort of the rowers propels the boattowards that finish line!

This is followed by a trip to the bar forthe de-brief and re-hydration of theathletes. Above everything else Pub’n Clubis FUN. We hope that you will come andwatch, and in future take part. The winningteam is rewarded with a year’smembership of the Rowing Club…try it!It could change your life…..

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

Who Pays theFerryman?

Thank you to everyone who hassent photographs and memories ofthe Arley Ferry ready for theFriends Exhibition this August andSeptember in the Wyre Forestgallery of Bewdley Museum.

We have lots of interesting storiesto share but we are still looking formemories from some of the otherlocal ferry crossings. Can you help?

In particular we would like to share yourmemories and photographs of the followingferries:- Quatford, Hampton Loade, Highley,Hampstall, The Burf, Holt Fleet and theCamp.

The history of the ferries really comes alivewith personal memories from the days whenwe really did walk a lot further to get aboutour daily business.

Early last month I crossed for the first timeon the recently reinstated Hampton LoadeFerry and talking to the Ferryman Darren itis apparent that memories are being createdagain today for the future. It is well worthcrossing the Severn there to experiencewhat making that daily passage must havebeen like.

In fact did you know that the HamptonLoade ferry ended up in Bewdley in 1957when it broke free due to a floating treetrunk in the flooded river? Mr Bill Parkes, theferryman, was rescued by the ArleyFerryman Bert Evans who was awarded aRoyal Humane Society medal for his efforts.

Can you add to the stories that we alreadyhave? Please contact Penny and DavidGriffiths on 01299 404912 [email protected] or pop and seeus in Dog Lane. Who Pays the Ferryman?runs from August 21st to September 26th inBewdley Museum. Memories as soon aspossible please – dead line end of this month– June!

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH MAY 2010Annual Town MeetingThe Annual Town Meeting took place on 26th April and was well attended by members ofthe public who were able to hear representatives of the main organisations and voluntarygroups in Bewdley talk about their work. Town Councillors also gave a report of theiractivities for the year. Wribbenhall Millennium GreenCouncillors had previously agreed to search for a suitable allotment site within Bewdley andWribbenhall as none exist at present and there is a demand for them. A Working Group hadidentified part of the Millennium Green as potentially being suitable for some allotments andthe Council approved this idea in principle. Further discussions will take place with theTransition Bewdley Land Group which is pressing for a site to be provided to check whetherthey felt an area of the Green would be suitable for such use. Highway MattersIt was agreed that further contact should be made with the Bewdley County Councillor toarrange for parking restrictions ie double yellow lines to be extended to the “civic space” onSevernside South as problems with parking persisted there. Some discussion took place about the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles especially insummer months along Severnside North which was increasingly seen as a “promenade”. Thesuggestion was to designate it as being for “Access Only” but how that might be enforcedwas not easy to resolveRiver Severn DredgingCouncillors noted a letter from the Environment Agency to say that dredging the river wasnot a viable option as a means of reducing the flood risk as sometimes suggested. Looking back on GuidingHere are photos of me and my family in Guiding - note the improvementin the comfort of the Uniform!!! Since joining 2nd Bewdley Browniesaround 1974 I have been a Guide and a Ranger Guide. In 1992 I becameGuide Leader - I was never a Rainbow because these didn't exist when Iwas five!!!My mum Joyce Moore was a Guide Leader with 2nd Bewdley Guides inthe early 1980's. My older brother Adrian was a Cub and is now AssistantVenture Scout Leader with the Severn Valley Ranger Venture Unit.My daughter Megan joined in 2001 and has since been a Brownie and a Guidewith 1st Wribbenhall Guides. She is soon to take her Promise as a YoungLeader with 1st Bewdley Brownies. My husband Robert Williams is soon tocelebrate 50 years continuous membership of the Scout Association. Hejoined on his 8th birthday and has never left the movement! He has beenAssistant County Commissioner and is now Secretary for the Activate TeamScout Fellowship. (Again he was never a Beaver Scout because these didn'texist either 50 years ago!)His mum Eileen Williams was a Cub Leader at Far Forest and his brother Colin was also amember of 3rd Bewdley (Wribbenhall) Scout Group. My dad's family also has a history ofScouting in Bewdley. In essence Scouting and Guiding really is a way of life - for our familyat least! Alison Williams (nee Moore)

Local railway carriage restorersscoop top national awardBewdley-based railway enthusiasts have won a nationalaward for a 1922 Great Northern Railway carriagerestored over nine years. This cost £186,000, helped byan £84,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Rebuilding froma derelict rotten shell, the LNER (SVR) Coach Fund usedteak recovered from the cargo of a ship sunk in 1917. Their volunteers have been restoringsuch carriages in Bewdley Station yard since 1977, interest centring on the designs of SirNigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the former LNER (famous for Flying Scotsmanand Mallard). The result is the SVR’s wonderful varnished teak train, one of the line’sproudest assets.

The Heritage Railway Association chose the award-winning carriage, GNR 2701, as theirlatest overall winner. It is a period restoration to the highest standards.Authenticity and attention to detail are breathtaking. GNR 2701 is awork of art and now carries fare-paying passengers on SVR trains. Halfthe carriage has first class compartments and, for a modest £3supplement, passengers can travel in these superbly restored seats inwhich royalty would not feel out of place.

The award, a vintage railway lamp, is displayed in the SVR’s Highley‘Engine House’, alongside the locomotives, stock and other artefactsthere.
