"is has been another fast paced year here at Children’s Foundation! Once again we were able to reach more children and their families than ever before. During 2010 more than 1,660 children were served by our programs. Here are just a few of the highlights for the year:

As you can see 2010 was quite a year. I am grateful for your continued prayers and #nancial support. I am also proud that during these di$cult #nancial times we were able to continue growing our programs to meet the growing needs of children and families in crisis. May God continue to richly bless each and every one of you and your families!

We love it when our kids get crafty because they begin to show a side of themselves that they may never have accessed. At times, introducing a child to art is like &ipping a switch to a lamp that no one knew stood in the corner. At Children’s Foundation of Mid-America’s residential sites, our activity directors are busy helping our kids to do more than sit. We aren’t just interested in caring for kids, but also in enriching their lives with experiences they may not get elsewhere. In the winter, art is an especially good activity because it can be done indoors. As a part of their art recreation, residents at Farmington Children’s Home enjoy Masterpiece Tuesday. Each Tuesday, the children work on a painting and, if they wish, submit their paintings to be judged against their peers. At the end of the month, all of the artwork is displayed in the library. Case managers and residents all vote on the paintings,

with the artists remaining anonymous. Winners in several categories win art supplies or gift cards. Over the holidays, the residents also participated in a Gingerbread House competition. Each cottage was given a Gingerbread House kit to build and to decorate. Instead of showing just their individual creativity, the kids were able to show o! their teamwork skills, drawing upon leadership and negotiation skills to involve everyone’s ideas. "e results were spectacular (and yummy!). Ten girls from Regional Girls’ Shelter recently painted pottery at Firehouse Pottery in Spring#eld. After they paint, their creations are #red in a hot oven to bake on the glaze and allow them to be used permanently. "e girls were proud of their artwork and thrilled to be having fun together out in the community. Sev-eral of the girls showed their generosity by opting to give their painted pieces to members of their family or to friends.

"ere are children hurting right now. "ey are in horri#c family situa-tions, enduring deplorable conditions, or they have recently been removed from their families. Many of them are now considered wards of the state. At any one time, over 9,000 Missouri children are considered “cases” in the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services. Some of the children are in families that just need to be placed back on the right track. Some of the children need to be permanently removed because of the harm that could come to them. Whatev-er their situation, many of these children will ultimately be saved by well-executed

foster care case management and caring case managers. It is almost impossible to oversell the importance of foster care case manage-ment. "e concepts behind it are simple:1. Every child deserves the attention of people who care about him or her. 2. A team is created, made up of people who have an interest in a child’s life. !at team comes up with a strategy and plan for care.3. !e plan is implemented and progress is reviewed regularly. Relatives, foster parents, court ap-pointed special advocates, and case managers meet with each other and the child to discuss options.

Children’s Foundation of Mid-America sits at the center of these teams by supplying foster care case managers. Our case managers make sure that no child is left without advocacy and care. "ere are known for their amazing, self-less, committed care. Because more children than ever are in need of foster care case management, Children’s Foundation of Mid-America is taking steps to care for these children, growing our sta! and securing space for them to do their jobs. Our e!orts in Spring#eld resulted in the opening of "e Children’s Center. Read more about the Children’s Center Capital Campaign below.

In 2010, Children’s Foundation of Mid-America opened "e Children’s Center in Spring#eld, Missouri. "e Children’s Center houses foster care case management services and meeting rooms for consulta-tions with families and professional team members. Already, it has made a di!erence in the lives of over 132 children who were served there last year. Children’s Foundation of Mid-America has launched a capital campaign to pay o! the building’s mortgage and create a fund that will ensure these services remain for generations of Missouri’s chil-dren. Naming opportunities for the entire building, its meeting rooms, and the fund are available for interested individuals and corporations (Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits are available for busi-nesses). Contact Bill Anderson at 314-989-9727 or Jamie Fowler at 417-862-9634 for more information on how you can become a part of helping children now and for years to come.

For a child to be in care over the holidays is di$cult. We do our best to make each child feel loved and cared for and to feel as if the holidays are “normal” for them. It starts with the activities that our kids participate in. In Farmington, the kids sang Christmas carols at Presbyterian Manor nursing home. Santa went along with them, visit-ing with residents, passing out smiles

and warm wishes. "e kids and the senior adults soak up each other’s company, talk-ing and giving each other Christmas cheer. "e kids get in the spirit of the season by decorating as well. One young man at Farmington completely took it upon himself to set up a Christmas tree in our lobby. He then decorated it and the entire front lobby. He took pride in his accomplishment and we enjoyed his work.

But, of course, Christmas is made even more spectacular by the generos-ity of our many donors. We received gifts from churches, organizations and individuals, gift cards and cash so that we could supplement their gifts with clothes that #t and outerwear to keep the kids warm this winter. "ank you to the many people who made this Christmas a warm, wonderful, loving occasion for our kids. "ey were truly blessed by your gifts.

Patricia, 19, has been in foster care since she was two months

old. She has a sister, Debbie, 20, who also has been in foster care for much of her life. Today, Patricia and Debbie share an apartment at our Scattered Sites transitional living program in Maplewood. Both girls are in college pursuing degrees in early childhood development. "eir goal is to open a day care center together. You can help children like Patri-cia and Debbie a!ord college tuition by leaving a bequest in your will

to Children’s Foundation of Mid-America. Your bequest can help children pay for tuition without tak-ing out expensive loans. Together, we can give children the encourage-ment, support, and hope that they need to build the self esteem to become successful and independent. If you would like to help our children with a scholarship, you can simply add bequest language to your will: ““I give, devise and bequeath to Children’s Foundation of Mid-America, 1220 N. Lindbergh Boule-vard, St. Louis, Missouri, 63132, the sum of $______ for the education of children in their care.”

L("#*1(&$Sometimes, the success story is about how a parent changed. Tanya was a young parent and a heavy drug user when her daughter was taken from her home and placed in our care. Tanya struggled with working her program and address-ing her problems. When she became pregnant with another child, she knew that she had to get her life straightened out. She had the baby and was function-ing well enough to keep it. She con-tinued to make changes in her life and eventually she was able to bring her older daughter back home. Both children have been with her now for over a year and the family is doing wonderfully. It is really one of the most ful#lling and exciting things to see — watching a

once-broken family, pieced back together and held tight by love.

H/44(+($6/"#&$ Julia was sexually abused by her father. He’s now in jail for his crimes, but her mother still denies the abuse ever happened. Julia has been in foster care for several years. She has had over 20 placements. She was #nally placed with a foster family where she has remained for two years. During this time, she was able to heal and start her life over. She changed her name to that of her foster parents and is now attending college, a tremendous feat for someone who started in the worst of situations. Julia’s goal now is to get a degree in a #eld that helps others.

On November 29, children at Farmington Children’s Home celebrated "anksgiving Culture Night. Culture nights are educational opportunities for every member of the commu-nity to learn about di!erent cultures, foods and lifestyles. "e kids research an area of culture and then present their #nd-ings to the group. For "anksgiving, each cottage was given an area of the "anksgiving meal for them to research. As they sat down to a meal prepared by the sta!, they discussed what the real #rst "anksgiving was like and what was likely on the menu.

Every day, we are connecting with hundreds of organizations and individuals around the world to bring attention to the issues that most impact neglected children. "e content on our sites represents the complex issues that the Children’s Foundation family faces every day: from the challenges and repercussions of

abuse, the social stigma surrounding the words “foster child” to the realities of post-care life (sky-high rates of home-lessness, jail & pregnancy and depress-ingly low college admission rates). We also are able to celebrate the positive experiences and re-frame the conversa-tion every single day by sharing the success stories of our kids, the loving acts by foster parents, and the sel&ess act of donors. Not only do our e!orts place us as a thought-leader and help build national recognition of Children’s Foundation, it strengthens our local outreach, fundrais-ing and campaigns to raise awareness about the realities of foster care.

Most importantly, it allows us to help YOU in your work to educate and inspire others. "ese channels are fun, engaging opportunities for you to connect with us, share this powerful work and #nd information that supports your amazing e!orts. So, join us! “Like” the articles, chime in with comments, insights and advice. Please, let us know what interests you most and how we can help you as an inspiring advocate.

"e Regional Girls’ Shelter Advisory Board hosted its annual Valentine Gala on February 11 at the Tower Club in Spring#eld. Proceeds from "e Valentine Gala, including the silent auction, support the program as well as recreation activities and clothing needs of the girls who live at Regional Girls’ Shelter. Guest speakers at the gala, including a couple of our resi-

dent girls, elaborated on our residential and foster care programs. Entertainment for this year’s event was supplied by the

Spring#eld Symphony Orchestra. On behalf of the girls, we

would like to thank everyone who attended, as well as Great Southern Bank for sponsor-ing dinner for the symphony players. We would also like to thank the Advisory Board for

organizing and supporting the event.
