There seems to be some cause for hoping that there may be minor relaxations of the coronavirus restrictions soon. Their "work" was to assist the first, primary group of Oratorians, the laity. The Oratory priests and brothers were and are different from all other religious communities (e.g. Jesuits and Franciscans) in that they take no vows and remain together fully bound only by charity. Oratorian priests and brothers are therefore members of a Pontifical Congregation who live and work within a diocese free to serve where there is a need and a job. Dear Parishioners, This Sunday is known as Good Shepherd Sunday, when we pray especially for vocations to the ministerial priesthood.

In the history of the Church, successful reforms for the life of faith have always had, as a vital constituent, the reform of the clergy. This is not to promote clericalism, the misuse of the clerical state for purposes contrary to it, but acknowledging the place intended by Christ for

the priesthood in the Sacramental Economy. St Patrick, in a splendid phrase from his Confessions, sums up well the attitude that ought to motivate the hearts of the clergy. Speaking of the peoples who had come to faith and received baptism at his hands, St Patrick wrote that "clergy were ordained for them everywhere." That "for them" says it all. May the Good Shepherd, the Risen Christ, call many shepherds after His own Heart to care for the sheep whom He purchased with His own Blood.

Thank you to all who contribute to our income through electronic giving, or other means. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, may I again remind you that we are now significantly dependent on electronic giving for our parish income? We appreciate that this is a time of serious financial uncertainty, and we are most grateful when people keep the parish in mind as part of their own financial planning. invited friends to his one-room apartment for shared prayer, Bible study

Refection

The true way to advance in holy virtues is to persevere in a holy cheerfulness. The cheerful are much easier to guide in the spiritual life than the melancholy. St Philip Neri

The measure of Divine Providence in us depends on the degree of trust we have in it. Do not anticipate the unpleasant events of this life by apprehension, rather anticipate them with the perfect hope that, as they happen, God, to Whom you belong, will protect you. Either He will see that nothing bad happens to you or, if He allows anything bad to happen to you, He will give you the invincible courage to bear it. Remove from your imagination whatever may upset you, and say frequently to our Lord: "O God, You are my God and I will trust in You; You will be my refuge, there is nothing I will fear."

Opportunity.' Mother Angelica

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY, WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS, 3rd MAY, 2020

Today is the World Day of Vocations. Pope Francis tells us: Every vocation is born of that gaze of love with which the Lord came to meet us, perhaps even at a time when

our boat was being battered by the storm. We will succeed in discovering and embracing our vocation once we open our hearts in gratitude and perceive the passage of God in our lives. (Message for World Day of Prayer for Vocations, 2020)

Let us pray for the young people in our community, and in our families and circle of friends. May our prayers and presence reflect the gaze of love from the Lord to help them discover their vocation.

What can I do?

Each one of us can do something for the future of the Church in our nation. We all want and need more vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. What can I do? The most important and essential thing that each of us can do is to pray. Intentionally, regularly, insistently. Make a decision today to include a prayer for vocations in your daily prayers.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori:

"My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

WE PRAY FOR:-Those who are recently deceased:

Doris HUEZO, Solange de ROBILLARD, Maria DALL’ALBA, Eugene DONNELLY (Ireland)

Sr M Raymond RSM, Gaynor KANE and John MOSS. Those who are sick: Ksenia BORODIN, Rex BOWEN, Verna BOWEN, Clare CLARK, Duncan CARSTENS, Ruth Mary DALY, Sylvia DE LUCA, Shannon EMSLIE, Mark FARRAH, Jane FARRELL, Maria FARRELL, Bryan FITZPATRICK, Joan FLEW, Anne FRANETTOVICH, Gwen GAIR, Gloria GARR, Bronte GREER, Marlene JOHNSTON, Tony LEVICK, Ben McFADDEN

((Ireland) Marie MITCHELL, Barbara MASON, Fr Ron MOLLISON, Mila PICKARD, Ron ROFE, Joan ROONEY, Joan RYAN, Rosa Maria SANTOS, Joan TATHEM, Norma TORPEY, Josephine & Bill WRIGHT and Matthew ZEMEK.

All the faithful departed especially, Tereza FERENC, Les VARGA (Snr ). Please call the Parish Office to have names placed on any of the

lists above or to remove someone who is now well.

ACT OF PERFECT CONTRITION

Through an act of Perfect Contrition you can receive the forgiveness of your sins outside of confession, even mortal sins, provided that you determine yourself

to correct your life and make a firm resolution to go to sacramental confession as soon as you can, when it becomes possible. Remember, these are extraordinary measures only, for times when a priest is truly not available to you.

Perfect Contrition is sorrow and detestation of sin arising out of the love of God. One way of exciting this contrition in our hearts is by considering the passion of Jesus Christ and making acts of love for Him. We can also think of the infinite love which God has for

us, and express sorrow in our heart in the presence of this great love which we have offended.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for all the sins of my life simply because by them I have offended You and Your infinite love. I desire never to offend You again. Grant that my soul my enter into Your grace, and remain united to You forever. Amen.

Fourth Sunday of Easter Year A, 2nd/3rd May, 2020

MASS READINGS First Reading: Acts 2:14.36-41

On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd with a loud voice: "The whole House of Israel can be certain that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ." Hearing this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the apostles, "What must we do, brothers?" "You must repent," Peter answered "and every one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise that was made is for you and your children, and for all those who are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God will call to himself." He spoke to them for a long time using many arguments, and he urged them, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation." They were convinced by his arguments, and they accepted what he said and were baptised. That very day about three thousand were added to their number.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 22 (Said by all)

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path; he is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:20-25

The merit, in the sight of God, is in bearing punishment patiently when you are punished after doing your duty. This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for you to follow the way he took. He had not done anything wrong, and there had been no perjury in his mouth. He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults;

when he was tortured he made no threats but he put his trust in the righteous judge. He was bearing our faults in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our faults and live for holiness; through his wounds you have been healed. You had gone astray like sheep but now you have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me. Alleluia!

Gospel: John 10:1-10

Jesus said: ‘I tell you most solemnly, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but gets in some other way is a thief and a brigand. The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock; the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leads them out. When he has brought out his flock, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they know his voice. They never follow a stranger but run away from him: they do not recognise the voice of strangers.' Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he meant by telling it to them. So Jesus spoke to them again: `I tell you most solemnly, I am the gate of the sheepfold. All others who have come are thieves and brigands; but the sheep took no notice of them. I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: he will go freely in and out and be sure of finding pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.’

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Memorial Acclamation: Number One: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
