Born in Nova Scoti a in 1913 he wentinto the min ing industry where heworked as a mine r and diamond drill er.He s erved in th e Royal Canadian En­ginee rs in Europe for si x yea r s durin gthe Second World War. He joined theDep artment in 1958 and becam e adi amond drill for eman in January,1959, the position he held until hisdeath.

He le aves a WidOW, Mrs. AlisonLivin gstone and a four yea r old daugh­ter at 536 Webster Avenue, Coqu itlam,B.C.

He came to British Columbia in 1947and had si nce been employe d by theB.C. Department of Highways. He wor k­ed on r oad cons t r uct ion until 1949and s ince then had been with the loc a­ti on dep artm ent. He liv ed at varioustimes in Victoria, Salmo, Bi g Bend,Ro ss land , Boston Bar and cametoNel­son in October , 1958.

While with the Loc ati on Branch hewas Resident Enginee r in charge ofsurveying the present r outes of theSalmo-Creston Highway, Yahk- Cr an­brook Section, and pa r t of th e Blu e­berry- Paulson s ec t i on s of HighwayNo.3.

OBITUARIES

WILLIAM KREVENCHUK died s ud­denl y October 8th in Mills Mem orialHospital. Bill had been employed bythe Terrace District s ince November,1959 and had competently filled man yclassifications , Loader Operator,Back-Hoe Operator, Truck Driver andTractor Operator. He was consi d­ered a dependable s tea dy worker and allin the District were s addened by hiss udden death. He le aves hi s wife,Frances , and four s mall childr en.

Peek Into The Past

The first GO.M.C. truck used in the Cranbrook area around 1925. The truck was working in the Marysville area and beingloaded by a !1J yard bear Cat shovel. The identity of the man by the shovel is not known.

Underbody plows are not so new as this 1938 photo from Quesnel shows. It's a Chev 3-ton with two plows mounted underthe body with ingenious spring system to take the shock and p ull the plow back into position.

The "Quadra Beaver Discourager" or "what to do until thegame warden arrives." After having to launch a boat andclean a 3 foot culvert under 12 feet of water some action wasnecessary to prevent a recurrence. A cable was attached tothis screen placed over the mouth of the culvert . Th e beaverhad no trouble in building a dam agains t it poernight. Hut ayank on the cable in the morning was just like pulling aplug in the bath tu b, and sticks, mud and leaves go swirlingdown the drain . B ut beavers don 't dis courage easi ly . Thegame warden eventually had to trap them.

During the evening master of cere­monies Jim Holt , introduced Superin­tend ent Pat Dunn and his wife Dorothy.Mr. Dunn recently posted to the Districtsaid it was a pleasure to see employeeswho wor k together, have fun together.

From Cherryville, Lumby, Enderby,Westside, Oyama and Vernon, the 150who attended enjoyed dancing andnovelty events topped off with adelicious smorgasbord supper.

The repeater presently inuse is located on the peak 0/ PortageMountain, which is accessible only byhelicopter.

Fern Rivard (car 2000) working onradio communiciations in the GrandForks office. Fern lives in Penticton,and services the radios of the High­way Department as far east as GrandForks .

BRIDGES

Monday, October 24th, the bridge atTrout Creek on Highway No. 16 hadboth approaches washed out. Theflood was due to an overnight rainfallof 2V2 inches The bridge at Hells Bellswas also washed out.

Shook bridge in the Chilliwack Dist­rict, recently constructed over HatzicSlough, about three miles east of Mis­sion.

Upper Gaffney Bridge located on theFort St. James-Germansen Landingroad. The old King Truss was re­placed in 1966 by a fir log stringerspan on concrete pier and abutments.Work was undertaken by the Vander­hoof Bridge crew.
