FORENSICMASSSPECTROMETRYMass spectrometry is growing rapidly in the fieldof forensic science and it ismass spectrometriststhat are delivering results that directly andindirectly impact society. The significance of GCMSandLCMS/MSforqualitativeandquantitativeanalyses in toxicology is well known, and the UKhasparticular strengthsandexpertise in thisarea(Cowan).MorerecentlytheUKhasledthewayindeveloping MALDI MS for fingermark analysis(Francese), anddirect analysismass spectrometryis venturing beyond laboratories to deliver easyand fast analyses in the field. It is clear that forforensicscience,MS-basedanalyticalmethodswillcontinue to develop tomeet new demands: newlevels of sensitivity, increased robustness, newtargetcompoundsandnewforensicapplications. As mass spectrometry is playing an ever greaterrole, it is importanttostressthatforensicscienceis multidisciplinary, requiring academia, industryand organisations such as law enforcers, governments, public health authorities, healthservices, socialservicesandmediatopulltogether.Findinga languagethat isaccessiblebyallpartiesisparamounttothisinterdisciplinaryresearch.Thisworkshopwillbringtogetherpractitioners’atthe cutting edge of forensic mass spectrometryresearch to provide technical training with keypartiesfromnon-scientificforensicarenawhocanpresent the wider context. This will establish auniquelearningenvironmentthatgoesbeyondthe"simple" instrumental analysis of evidence toexplore thepracticeof a controlled vocabulary inanunprecedentedbuildingofastrongerandmoreconnectedforensicsciencecommunity.
AIMSThepurposeofthisworkshopis:• to provide an underpinning education in the
fundamentalsoftherelevanttechnologies• to introduce new technologies and deliver
‘know-how’ in advanced forensic massspectrometry
• toexploreanalyticalaspectscrucialtoforensicscience including analytical validation, androbustness, data and data reporting, communicatingbeyondthescientificarena
• to engage and support ear ly careerresearchers, advancing their skills, andenhancing awareness on the capabilities ofmassspectrometryinforensicscience
• to offeranoverviewofthebigpicture:wherephysical scienceworkswith social science andhealthscienceandnon-scientificbodies
• to boost interdisciplinary networking andencourageinternationalcollaborations.
OBJECTIVESTo achieve our aims, we will bring togetherinternationally recognised expertise to deliver ahighly interactive workshop. We set the level ofthisworkshopfordelegatestohaveadegreelevelof scientific understanding and will encouragedelegates to participate in poster sessions, practicalsessions, discussiongroupsandasitevisitto the forensic science facility of West YorkshirePolice.

THEBRITISHMASSSPECTROMETRYSOCIETY(1964)The British Mass Spectrometry Society(BMSS) proposes to organise and host anIMSF International Workshop in ForensicMassSpectrometryin2021.The BMSS is a registered charity (registrationnumber281330),with the society’soriginsdatingback to 1964, and whose purpose is to promoteanddisseminateknowledgeofMassSpectrometryand allied subjects for the benefit of the public. We achieve this by regularly organisingconferencesandtrainingcourses. We have just celebrated our 40th AnnualConference,heldover3daysandprecededbyour2-day Introduction toMass Spectrometry Course.TheSociety’strainingcourseshavebeenaregularfeatureontheBritishMSlandscapesince1993.TheUKhostedthefirstIMSCmeetingin1958andsubsequentmeetings in1961,1985and2003andat the 2003 meeting the BMSS introduced itsCareers Workshop which has featured at everyIMSCmeetingsince.Education is the highest priority of the BritishMassSpectrometrySociety!
EQUALITY,DIVERSITY&INCLUSIONThe British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) iscommitted to ensuring equality, diversity andinclusion for its members, employees, scientificpartners, meetings delegates and the Society’sserviceproviders.More informationcanbe foundon the EDI pages of the BMSS website:https://www.bmss.org.uk
Harry Brearley of the Brown-Firth research laboratory in Sheffield discovered a ‘rustless’ steel alloy in 1913. Over the following 100 years Stainless Steel cutlery and other mass produced steel goods became synonymous with Sheffield.

OVERVIEWWe will bring together internationally recognisedexpertisetodeliverahighly interactiveworkshop. We set the level of this workshop for delegateswithadegreelevelofscientificunderstandingandwill encourage delegates to participate in postersessions, practical sessions, discussiongroupsanda site visit to the forensic science facility ofWestYorkshirePolice.POSTERPROGRAMMETheposterprogramme isoneof thekey featuresoftheworkshop.Studentsmustsubmitanabstractand prepare a poster for the workshop's postersession.EvenparticipantswhohavenotworkedinForensics Sciences so far, will be encouraged tobring a poster that highlights their researchinterests as a way to introduce themselves andperhaps findsuitablecollaborators for theirwork. The poster session is on the evening of the firstdayoftheworkshop, isdisplayedforthedurationof the event in a location where all the cateringwill be provided. This will enable participants tomingleandnetwork.Thebestposter, selectedbythe International Faculty (based on clarity, significance & presentation), will be awarded aprizeof£500.PRACTICALPROGRAMMEThe five practical sessions are a second keyfeaturesoftheworkshop.Session1:AsitevisittoWestYorkshirePolicemass spectrometry imagingandenhancementlaboratoryfeaturinglecturesbySenior Crime Scene Investigators. Session 2:Hands-on session focusingon in-field applicationsof mass spectrometry in the SHU laboratories.Session 3: Clinic session focusing on forensicchallenges identified by the course delegates.Session 4: Presenting a newmethod for the firsttimeincourt.Session5:Workingwiththemedia.
