BMC at the A’s game 4
Inside this issue:
Currently we are finish-
ing up a long stretch of
work over the past 18
months which saw us
complete a number of
large high-profile pro-
jects, including the re-
cently completed 1880
Mission, Exploratorium,
SLAC, and Market
Square projects along
with those winding down
at 717 Battery, UCSF
and 10th & Market, Over
these last 18 months
we’ve seen our headcount
reach historic heights,
topping out at 263 union
employees back in August
of 2012.
As we wind down on this
most recent stretch of
projects, we are busy
planning to ramp up
again for our next big
run. With another 9
large projects scheduled
to begin starting in Sep-
tember, we should begin
to see our head count
gradually rise leading up
to our next expected peak
in labor around February/
March of 2014, bringing
our current staffing levels
back to well over 200 un-
ion employees again.
Mike Tobin, Plumbing
and Piping Superinten-
dant expects to see about
100 new plumbing and
piping workers during
this ramp up, while Rick
Hood, HVAC Superinten-
dent, estimates another
additional 40 sheet metal
workers will need to be
brought in during this
time. This includes not
only increases in our need
for new field labor but
also increases in produc-
tion coming out of both
detailing and fabrication
departments as well, as
all of these new projects
will require a full spec-
trum of BMC services.
As we look forward to this
next large wave of activ-
ity for our company, its
important to remember to
welcome the new BMC
family members, teach
them the BMC way of
doing things, and remind
them of our focus on exe-
cution and safety at the
workplace. Thanks eve-
ryone for all that you
have done and are doing
at BMC. We are fortunate
to have a tremendous
amount of work coming
in the near future.

BMC recently completed work on the
fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel. When
fully completed, the fourth bore will carry
west-bound traffic through the tunnel, giv-
ing the passage two tunnels permanently
dedicated to east-bound traffic and two tun-
nels permanently dedicated to west-bound
traffic, which will eliminate the twice daily
shifts. The new bore is scheduled to be
open this fall pending final inspections.
As part of the final phase of construction,
BMC completed the installation of nine-
teen (19), 200-horsepower, bi-directional
jet fans. The 19 jet fans run along the en-
tirety of the three-quarter mile bore, which
stretches from Orinda to Oakland. The jet
fans provide ventilation, fresh air to com-
bat carbon monoxide, and will divert
smoke in the event of a fire. They will be
automatically triggered by linear heat de-
tectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and
nitrous oxide detectors inside the tunnel.
Under the supervision of project foreman
Steve Koenig, the 19 fans were fabricated
in house over the course of 8 weeks by Tim
Riley and Chad Pickett. Each fan was as-
sembled in about 5 hours and then stored
onsite until ready for delivery. The fans
were shipped out to the job-site one-by-one
for installation by Steve, Tim, Chad, Josh
Barillas and Dan Miller. Each fan, weigh-
ing 8,700 pounds, was lifted into place
using tandem fork lifts, then bolted into
place with a mounting system embedded
in the final lining concrete of the new
tunnel. All 19 fans were fabricated,
shipped and installed over the course of 4
months. Steve Koenig put together a
fantastic video which shows the various
stages that went into the fan installation
out in the tunnel. Check out the video on
