our current staffing levels

floor retail space. The project will be design build and BMC will

perform both the plumbing and HVAC scopes of work on the pro-

ject. The project is slated to break ground in the fourth quarter of

this year and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2016.

Mission Bay Block 13W will be a 16-story, 66,965 square foot

residential high-rise development with 162 one-bedroom

units, 111 two-bedroom units, 2,736 parking spaces, a fitness

center and s community room. The project will be plan and

spec, in which BMC will perform the plumbing scope of work.

The project is slated to begin construction this fall and ex-

pected to be completed by March of 2015.

The Block 13W site is central to the Major Phase Area

plan for South Mission Bay. The development will fulfill a

large portion of the housing inventory that will energize

the neighborhood and create a long-term economic engine.

The site is bordered on the north, west, and south by

parks, and the eastern edge is defined by a pedestrian

walkway shared with the new Mercy Housing project at

Block 13E.

Mission Bay Block 13W adds yet another high profile pro-

BMC recently completed work on the

fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel. When

fully completed, the fourth bore will carry

west-bound traffic through the tunnel, giv-

ing the passage two tunnels permanently

dedicated to east-bound traffic and two tun-

nels permanently dedicated to west-bound

traffic, which will eliminate the twice daily

shifts. The new bore is scheduled to be

open this fall pending final inspections.

As part of the final phase of construction,

BMC completed the installation of nine-

teen (19), 200-horsepower, bi-directional

jet fans. The 19 jet fans run along the en-

tirety of the three-quarter mile bore, which

stretches from Orinda to Oakland. The jet

fans provide ventilation, fresh air to com-

bat carbon monoxide, and will divert

smoke in the event of a fire. They will be

automatically triggered by linear heat de-

tectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and

nitrous oxide detectors inside the tunnel.

Under the supervision of project foreman

Steve Koenig, the 19 fans were fabricated

in house over the course of 8 weeks by Tim

Riley and Chad Pickett. Each fan was as-

sembled in about 5 hours and then stored

onsite until ready for delivery. The fans

were shipped out to the job-site one-by-one

for installation by Steve, Tim, Chad, Josh

Barillas and Dan Miller. Each fan, weigh-

ing 8,700 pounds, was lifted into place

using tandem fork lifts, then bolted into

place with a mounting system embedded

in the final lining concrete of the new

tunnel. All 19 fans were fabricated,

shipped and installed over the course of 4

months. Steve Koenig put together a

fantastic video which shows the various

stages that went into the fan installation

out in the tunnel. Check out the video on
