Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Clachnacuddin FC to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League match. A warm welcome also to Clach Chairman and Highland League President Dennis Bridgeford. Dennis hasn’t had his problems to seek in his reign so far and I know how lonely a place it can be sometimes but Dennis comes of good stock and as a Strichen loon was educated in the Broch Academy. If that doesn’t get him through his reign, then nothing will!! Our last match here against Turriff United was a bit of a let-down in the fact we lost out on penalties after pretty much dominating the game but fair play to Turriff as they had a game plan and it worked perfectly. We wish them well for the remainder of the tournament. There were some things said at the end of the game which I was less than impressed with but if people want to behave like that then so be it. I have moaned about this before and people have a right to celebrate as if they couldn’t then what is the point in being involved. There are plenty bad days so it is right that you enjoy the good days but there is a line you shouldn’t cross and you have to respect the opposition. Everyone is different I suppose. Those of you who were at the game wouldn’t have failed to spot the sand pit in the middle of the pitch and I am pretty sure it will be still visible today (fingers crossed it isn’t raining!!). This is a problem area which has got worse this season but Hughie our groundsman has it under control and is already planning remedial work for the close season. I have no knowledge of greenkeeping and the fact I dug out all the grass around my house and replaced it with slabs and chuckies tells you it isn’t something I am keen to learn. Having said that however it is interesting to listen to Hughie and he tells me that this area is suffering from rotten soil and a disease of some sort but he has a cure. The amount of rain that has fallen here over the past few months is incredible and there are puddles all around the area which never had puddles before.

It is important that clubs make an effort to get their pitches in good order so that as many games get played as possible. It isn’t cheap and we have spent on average around £10k on the pitch each season for a number of years. Most clubs in the league are the same but sadly there are some who don’t and that needs to change if we are to get our seasons finished in good time every year. Last week we had a disappointing draw up at Huntly although it could have been worse had Joe Barbour not saved the penalty in injury time. Huntly have vastly improved from the time they played here earlier in the season but I am sure a lot of that goes down to Dougie Baxter. He manages his team like he played and despite not being the most popular player amongst the Broch fans we would have all loved to see him in Black & White stripes. As for today, Clach come here equally disappointed at getting knocked out of the cup in the last round and by all accounts should have got something from the game against Nairn. They have had a mixed season with some good results followed by some bad ones but they have had a few guys out. As always though, we will have to play well to ensure the three points remain at Bellslea.

Here’s to an exciting game. Come awa the Broch, Finlay

It's always tough to accept going out of a cup competition on penalties but how frustrating was the defeat against Turriff United given the amount of chances you created especially during the 90 minutes? Losing any games is difficult to take but even more so when it comes to cup matches. The game against Turriff was simply one of those games. We dominated the game from start to finish and created some really good chances which on another day we would have taken. Turriff only had one shot on goal the whole game and it went wide of the target. They set their stall out very early and it was clear that they wanted it to go to penalties as even when it was 11 v 11 they were slowing the game down and trying to frustrate us. In my opinion we didn't quite do enough to win the game as when they went down to 10 men, they sat in and invited us on to them but we didn't move quick enough to try and pull their players out of position so that I was disappointed in. Give Turriff credit as I think they defended really well and when you have a goalkeeper of the standard of Kevin Main then you always have a chance. I do not want to be too hard on my team because we dominated a team who are sitting fourth for almost the complete game and had we had a bit more luck then it would be us playing in the cup today and not Turriff, but hey that's football. We have won one cup already and are in another final so the boys are still having a relatively good season. Last week against Huntly it seemed like the guys couldn't get going as they normally do in terms of passing, movement and creating chances. How did you see the game and how big a loss was Ryan Christie having to go off early with an injury? Last weekend was by far the poorest we have played this season, yet we still came away with a draw. I do not know if the 120 minutes against Turriff the previous week got to the guys or not but there didn't seem to be any tempo to our play or any urgency. It was simply an off day where everyone decided to struggle in the game. Even Bryan Hay who in my mind has been the best centre half in the league this season, had one to forget. He has been outstanding this year but then makes a costly mistake for their first goal and puts us on the back foot. We changed things around and introduced Graham and Aidan who seemed to inject something in to our play. Graham did very well in creating our first goal and then Aidan got another which took him to 3 goals in 3 games. He deserves his chance so we may see him becoming more regular between now and the end of the season. Ryan took a knock early on and didn't manage to run it off. When he goes down injured you know something is not right as he would normally play through the pain barrier, but on this occasion we needed to change it. Early changes do not help things as our whole preparation was for the team which started. To then have to go and change 5 minutes in upsets the rhythm. That said we put Stuart Taylor in there who I feel did well. Not our best performance but at least it was another point and keeps us in the mix. We have ambitions of finishing in the top 6 and we will do our very best to achieve this. Reports in the press over the past couple of days have confirmed that you have signed Jamie Beagrie on a pre contract from Turriff United. Broch fans will already know of Jamie's qualities but what was it that persuaded you to bring him back to Bellslea?

I can confirm that we got Jamie Beagrie on a pre contract agreement on Tuesday night, so he will join us when his contract with Turriff finishes. He quite simply is one of the best attacking midfielders in the league today. It seems like he has been around for a while but he is still young and has many years ahead of him. When I took over as manager I highlighted 4 players whom I would like to sign, so we could be up there challenging more often. Dean was one and now Jamie has committed himself to us, that's two. He is strong in every area. Good passer, strong, athletic, scores goals, an all round, almost complete midfielder. He has already won the league on more than one occasion so he knows what it takes. The players we have will look up to him and see what he does and how he conducts himself and hopefully his winning mentality will rub off on some of them and make them more eager to win trophies. A signing in the stature of Jamie Beagrie shows the ambition I have as well as that of the club. We have been labelled a cup tam by most and rightly so as we are successful in a lot of cup competitions, but it is the league which we are all after and bringing Jamie on board will take us a step closer to competing.

Today sees the visit of Clachnacuddin in a re-arranged fixture. The reverse fixture this season saw a battling performance by the Broch capped with Ryan Cowie's late winner. What type of a game are you expecting today? I expect the game to be very similar. Clach had a disappointing result on Wednesday night in the cup so they will be looking to make amends. They will come down here hurting that they are out of the cup and I am sure Ian will be looking for a reaction. If we play like we did last week then we will lose. Simple as that, however I do not think I will see that performance from them again. A few harsh words were spoken after the game so the players know what I expect. Ability is not an issue with our guys as they are all talented players for this league. We just need to change their mindset and add a bit more desire into them and see where that takes us. We need to start getting better at the mentality side of the game and start going into every match as if it is a cup final. Football does not last forever and I have tried telling the guys that. If they share my ambition of winning the league then we need to start making strides now as before they realise it, the chance may be gone. All the Best, Mark.

Match Report Vs turriff united Breedon Aggregates Scottish Highland Football League Cup Quarter Final, Saturday 27th February 2016, Fraserburgh v Turriff United, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh The Broch should have taken the lead as early as four minutes when Graham Johnston’s free kick was floated to the back post from 30 yards out to Willie West who headed back across the six yard box but Paul Campbell couldn’t get a touch to knock the ball into the net. Three minutes later a Turriff free kick was met by Artjoms Kuznecovs but Joe Barbour was on hand to save easily. On 10 minutes Leszek Nowosielski had a chance from outside the box but he blazed well over the bar. It was almost lucky 13th minute for the Broch when West headed the ball into the Turriff box and the ball was deflected out to Ryan Cowie who saw his effort blocked by Kevin Main, the rebound fell to Johnston on the edge of the box and he set up Dean Cowie only for him to see his effort saved by Main. Another great chance was passed up 3 minutes later when Campbell disposed a Turriff defender in the middle of the pitch a slid the ball through to Johnston but just as the striker lined up his shot the ball took a bobble and his effort when high over the bar. The Broch striker tried his luck from a free kick after Paul Young had fouled Campbell but his effort went just past the right hand upright. On 28 minutes Marc Dickson’s run and cross form the right was met by a glancing header from West but once again Main saved. Four minutes later Dean Cowie won the ball back in midfield and played it through to Campbell who turned his marker and forced a save from Main but no one in a Broch shirt was on hand to follow up the rebound. Just before the break another cross into the Turriff box was only half cleared to the edge of the box where Dean Cowie met it but he couldn’t direct his shot on target. Half Time: Fraserburgh 0-0 Turriff United Turriff were first to threaten when Robbie Allan cut inside from the left wing and fired a shot just wide of Barbour’s goal. On 53 minutes Johnston swung in a dangerous free kick which was deflected wide for a corner. The visitors were reduced to 10 men on 65 minutes after a crunching tackle by James Chalmers on Ryan Christie was deemed to be over the top by referee Graham Beaton who had no hesitation in showing the player a red card. Seven minutes later corner by Johnston to the near post was met by Christie but Main saved again and the rebound was cleared. On 81 minutes another ball into the Turriff box this time by Dickson was met by Christie but he couldn’t keep his effort on target. Three minutes from time a free kick by Dean Cowie was headed on by West but Main was out bravely to clear the ball. The Broch had one final chance in regulation time when Ryan Cowie and his brother Dean combined to set up Johnston and his dangerous ball into the six yard box was headed clear by Bowden under pressure from Campbell. Full Time: Fraserburgh 0-0 Turriff United Michael Rae was first to try his luck in extra time firing just wide from 20 yards out and just before the first half ended a move between Rae, Johnston and Ryan Cowie saw the latter’s shot saved by Main. Johnston had a chance from a free kick 30 yards out which he fired just wide of the post. As the minutes ticked down Dean Cowie’s cross was cleared to Johnston who saw his shot blocked and the same player crossed for Rae but his shot was blocked. Saturday 20th February 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Deveronvale 3-0 Rothes Deveronvale earned a hard-fought victory over Rothes at Princess Royal Park, thanks mainly to an excellent substitute appearance from Sean Keith. Lukas Krobot put the home side in front on the half-hour mark when Nathan Ross’ effort from Kevin Souter's free-kick hit the post and the ball rebounded kindly for Krobot to tap home from close range. Scott Fraser doubled Vale’s lead when he headed home a Sean Keith corner midway through the second half. Substitute Keith completed the scoring with a superb free-kick just four minutes later to seal a welcome three points for the Banff side. Formartine United 6-1 Fort William A hat-trick from Cammy Keith helped title-chasing Formartine to victory over Fort William. The United striker opened the scoring in the 11th minute and the home side’s only other goal in the first half came through a volley from Stuart Anderson. Fort William’s Iain MacLellan fired in a superb strike just before the break to reduce the deficit. However, Formartine were ruthless in the second half and scored a further four goals, the first of which came from a tap-in by Garry Wood. Keith soon netted from close range and then turned home a header to complete his hat-trick. Formartine’s final goal of the game arrived in the 71st minute as Anderson nodded the ball into the net to complete a convincing win. Fraserburgh 4-0 Strathspey Thistle Graham Johnston inspired Fraserburgh to a well-deserved win over Strathspey. The Broch forward scored once and set-up three goals in a superb personal performance. The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Paul Campbell turned the ball into the net after a cross from Johnston. Fraserburgh missed several chances to increase their lead before the break, but doubled their tally early in the second half as Campbell turned provider for Johnston to score. The Broch then quickly grabbed their third goal of the game as Johnston set-up Aidan Combe who supplied a right-footed finish. Fraserburgh’s final flourish arrived in the 66th minute as Willie West turned in a header, having latched on to a cross from Johnston. Inverurie Locos 2-4 Keith A double from Michael Ewen was the difference as Keith recorded an impressive success at Inverurie. The only goal of the first half was scored by the visitors, thanks to a fine curling finish from Donald Fraser in the 22nd minute. Craig Cormack doubled Keith’s lead with a tap-in early in the second half, only for Inverurie to reduce the deficit through a low strike from David Ross. In the 72nd minute, Ewen netted his first goal of the game with a clever turn and shot, then Locos were reduced to 10 men after Mark Souter received a second caution. A late goal from Michael Selfridge gave Inverurie hope of getting a point from the game, but in injury-time Ewen scored again to secure victory for Keith. Lossiemouth 1-3 Cove Rangers Johnny Smith scored twice as Cove kept up their title challenge with a win at Lossiemouth. The home side struck first, in the 13th minute, when Scott Miller scored with a header following a corner. But Lossie’s lead did not last long as Smith fired the ball into the net after a neat turn in the middle of the penalty area. Cove soon doubled their advantage thanks to a superb 20-yard strike from Grant Campbell and held on to that advantage at half-time. There was only one goal in the second period and it went to Cove,

who were made to battle hard to win all three points. Blair Yule was the architect and from his surging run and cut-back in the 53rd minute, Smith provided a cool finish. Nairn County 1-2 Turriff United A superb display of goalkeeping from Kevin Main inspired Turriff to victory over Nairn at Station Park. The deadlock was finally broken two minutes into the second half when David Booth was brought down by Sean Webb in the penalty box and referee David Watt pointed to the spot. Lewis Davidson stepped up and fired the spot kick straight down the middle for the opener. Nairn levelled on the hour, Robbie Duncanson with a through ball into the path of Conor Gethins and he rounded Main to stroke home the equaliser. Turriff grabbed the winner with 10 minutes to go when Robbie Allan was allowed time and space on the edge of the box and he rifled the ball past Callum Antell from 25 yards. Wednesday 24th February 2016 Breedon Aggregates Scottish Highland Football League Cup Round Two Forres Mechanics 5-1 Fort William (match played at Grant Park, Lossiemouth) Forres Mechanics secured a place in the Highland League Cup quarter finals with a comfortable win over Fort William at Grant Park in Lossiemouth. Simon Allan gave the Can Cans an early lead on 2 minutes but Barna Tot levelled for Fort on 34 mins. Liam Baxter restored Forres’ lead just before half time and Stuart Soane added two more on 53 & 67 minutes. Gordon Finlayson scored with 11 minutes left to set up a tie against Cove Rangers to be played at Kynoch Park, Keith. Saturday 27th February 2016 Breedon Aggregates Scottish Highland Football League Cup Quarter Finals Cove Rangers 2-1 Forres Mechanics (after extra-time) Jonny Smith hit a double in the second-half of extra-time to send Cove through to the semi-finals of the Highland League Cup. The hosts edged the opening period of the tie at Kynoch Park in Keith and Daniel Park saw an effort strike a post, before Connor Scully curled in a shot which bounced off the crossbar. There was little between the teams in a match that was played on a heavy pitch and despite having more possession, Cove couldn’t break down Forres inside 90 minutes. Early in the first period of extra-time the Mechanics took the lead, as a free-kick from Simon Allan was headed into the net by substitute Graham Fraser, who has only just returned to action after a long-term knee injury. Cove got back on level terms shortly after the break when Smith connected with a cross from Blair Yule to score with a powerful shot. Smith then grabbed the winner three minutes before the end of extra-time with a neat turn and finish. Fraserburgh 0-0 Turriff United (after extra-time, Turriff won 7-6 on penalties) Keeper Kevin Main was the hero for Turriff as they beat Fraserburgh after a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals of the Highland League Cup. The United goalie made several crucial saves during the regulation 90 minutes, most notably from Paul Campbell and Dean Cowie during the first half. Turriff’s best chance fell to Robbie Allan, who lashed a shot off target early in the second period. In the 65th minute, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when James Chalmers was sent off for a foul on Ryan Christie. Neither team could break the deadlock, including through extra-time and the game went to penalties. In the shootout Main scored from the spot

and also saved efforts from Graham Johnston and Courtney Cooper to send his side into the last four. Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Inverurie Loco Works 2-2 Deveronvale A double from Martin Charlesworth earned Deveronvale a share of the spoils at Inverurie. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 11th minute after the Locos defence failed to clear a low deliver from Zander Jack, which went on to strike the far post and Martin Charlesworth directed the rebound past keeper Errol Watson from six yards out. As the half-hour mark approached, Inverurie got back on level terms as Neil McLean provided the perfect corner to pick out Ross Anderson at the front post and the defender rose high to head the ball home. With half-time approaching, Deveronvale produced a great counter-attack to take the lead into the break as Charlesworth latched on to a pass from Bradley Manson and supplied a cool finish. However, in the 63rd minute Inverurie once again restored parity, when a cross from David Ross found Martin Laing lurking at the back post and he headed the ball into the net. Deveronvale came agonisingly close to claiming all three points in the final minutes as Nathan Ross sent a header wide having got on the end of a free-kick from Sean Keith. Fort William 1-6 Keith Donald Fraser scored a hat-trick as Keith fought back from conceding the opening goal to win at Fort William. The home side struck first as Iain Maclellan latched on to a header from Scott Davidson and supplied a cool finish. Keith restored parity in the 25th minute with a close-range effort from Fraser and he quickly turned provider for Ryan Spink to double his team’s lead. Shortly afterwards Fraser scored again as he slotted home the rebound after Douglas Maclennan saved a header from Luke Barbour. Fraser completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot and in the 43rd minute the Maroons grabbed their fifth goal of the game, thanks to a superb 18-yard shot from Greg Smith. The ball only ended up in the Fort net once in the second half and it happened late on when Kris Duncan provided a good finish from a tight angle. Wick Academy 2-1 Lossiemouth Wick scored with their first attacking move of the game as they edged out Lossiemouth at Harmsworth Park. Straight from kick-off, Alan Farquhar played the ball to Steven Anderson and from his cross, Marc Macgregor tapped the ball into the net. Wick came close to doubling their advantage when Michael Steven fired a shot off a post, but just after the half-hour mark, Lossie grabbed an equaliser. Farquhar’s pass-back to Sean McCarthy was too weak and Scott Miller nipped in to take the ball around the home keeper and score. Just before the hour mark Wick’s Richard Macadie came on for Macgregor and the substitute soon scored the winner by blasting in a shot after a cross from Davie Allan. Wednesday 2nd March 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Nairn County 3-3 Wick Academy Wick Academy were quick out of the blocks with Sam Mackay giving the visitors the lead in the first minute. Steven Harrison doubled that on 18 minutes before Alan Pollock pulled one back on 24 mins. Conor Gethins levelled things up 10 minutes after the break but Steven Harrison restored the Wick lead 4 minutes later. Almost immediately Andrew Skinner made it 3-3 which was how the game finished.

Highland League News Deveronvale are pleased to announce that Liam Forbes and Zander Jack have signed extensions to their contracts, keeping them at Princess Royal Park as part of the first team squad. Manager Steve Dolan said “I’m delighted that Liam and Zander have signed on again as they are both talented young lads and will be key players for the club going forward." Deveronvale have, by mutual agreement, placed Connor Rennie on the transfer list. Rennie, a right-back who can also play in central defence and midfield, has been with at Princess Royal Park since September 2010, having previously been with Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Interested parties should contact the club at [email protected] Draw for the Breedon Aggregates Scottish Highland Football League Cup semi-finals Nairn County v Turriff United Brora Rangers v Cove Rangers Ties to be played on Saturday 12th March. Buckie Thistle have placed Dennis Wyness on the transfer list. The striker has previously played for Aberdeen, Inverness and Elgin among other clubs. All enquires should be directed towards Buckie manager Graeme Stewart. Five Fort William players have signed contract extensions. Iain MacLellan, Glenn Fell, Liam Taylor, Scott Chisholm and Andreas Broomfield have all penned deals to remain at Claggan Park until the end of the 2017/18 season. Deveronvale have signed Inverurie Locos central defender Ryan Roberson on a short term contract until the end of the season. Meanwhile the club have released defender Connor Rennie from his contract. A club spokesman said: "Connor joined Deveronvale in season 2010/11 and has been a valuable and versatile player for the club during his stay. We wish him well in the future." Fraserburgh have signed a pre-contract agreement with Turriff's Jamie Beagrie. The 24-year-old will play for United until the end of the season and then join the Broch on Friday 1st July. Beagrie returns to the club where he made 91 appearances and scored seven goals. He left the Broch in 2010 to join Cove Rangers, then enjoyed a brief spell at Peterhead where he was loaned back to Cove, prior to joining his current club Turriff United. Inverurie Locos have confirmed the signing of Connor Rennie on a two-year deal. Co-manager Scott Buchan said: “We are delighted to welcome Connor Rennie to the club. We had already agreed a contract for next season, but his early release from Deveronvale has allowed us to accelerate that and bring him in for the remainder of this season. Connor perhaps lost his way a bit at Deveronvale and, by his own admission, lacked a bit of fitness. However that is easily rectified and at the age of 25 his best years are in front of him and we hope to benefit from that. Connor has good SHFL experience and he increases our options in defence and midfield and whilst we feel it will be next season onwards when we see the best of him, it’s great to get him in early to let him see what we expect of our players”

Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club News We welcome everyone from Inverness to the Bellslea for today’s Highland League match. Inverness Clachnacuddin are in 14th place in the league having secured 22 points from 23 games played. In last seasons game against Clach the Broch had a 4 – 2 victory, with P.A. Bruce scoring a hat trick and Ryan Christie scoring a single. Our last home game ended in a very disappointing defeat to Turriff United in the Highland League Cup, it was a game in which our visitors failed to create a chance on target for 2 hours but still won through in the penalties shoot out. Last Saturday we were at Huntly and a scrappy performance finished up as a draw which probably was a fair result. At present we do not know where our next fixture will be due to the number of games which have to be rescheduled. This may be far from ideal for the club but it’s understandable. Before you start complaining spare a thought for Secretary John Grant who must have the most difficult job in Highland League football as he juggles with matches going off on a daily basis. John is retiring from the post this year and we at the Broch supporters club would like to publicly thank him for the dedicated years of service he has given not just to our club, but to all clubs in the Highland League. Thank you John and enjoy your retirement, you certainly deserve it. We will to be running a supporters bus to the Inverurie game on Saturday 2nd of April which will leave from the Elizabethan Bar at 12:45pm. Bus prices are £10 for adults and £5 for others. We hope to attract new members to the supporters club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Non members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle. It was sad to hear that the Supporters Club slot on Kinnaird Radio has come to an end after many years. It was broadcast live on Thursday nights at 9.30pm with Brian Topping interviewing members of the Club about predictions and thoughts on the next match. All at the supporters club would like to thank Kinnaird Radio for their help over the many years and hope that the Station can be resurrected in the near future. Match report vs. huntly Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 5th March 2016, Huntly v Fraserburgh, Christie Park, Huntly Huntly and Fraserburgh had to settle for a share of the points after an injury penalty miss from the hosts. Neither team could create any chances in the first quarter of the game but the Broch had a great opportunity to take the lead on 24 minutes when Dean Cowie found Paul Campbell in space but Andrew Pennycook blocked the striker’s effort with his legs. The Broch continued to press and Ryan Cowie’s free kick was cleared to his brother Dean who found Bryan Hay whose effort was blocked. Russell McBride was next to have an effort after a cross to the back post found him in space but Pennycook was in the right place to save. Another dangerous free kick from Ryan Cowie was deflected into the path of Willie West but his header went wide. On the half hour a sweeping move by the Broch saw Dean Cowie set up his brother Ryan but his shot went just wide of the post. The Broch were getting closer and Ryan Cowie sent in another free kick from the right hand side which was met by Hay but his header was well tipped over by Pennycook. Huntly finally found their attacking poise and James Duguid saw his flicked header go just wide of the post. Aaron Scoular then tried his luck after skipping past Dean Cowie and McBride but shot just over the bar. Another Huntly chance went a begging when Ian Cruickshank saw his shot deflected to the back post area where Neale Davidson pulled the ball back but the Broch defence cleared at the expense of a corner. The Broch were back on the attack after a long ball found Campbell who flicked it into the path of Grant Noble but the visitor’s striker didn’t make proper contact as his snatched effort went wide. Huntly went ahead on the stroke of half time when Glenn Murison played James Duguid in behind the home defence and the former Fraserburgh forward took a touch before driving a shot past Joe Barbour for his fourth of the season. Half Time: Huntly 1-0 Fraserburgh

The visitors were stung into action at the start of the second half after going behind but it was Huntly who created the first real chance of the half when Matthew McDonald crossed for James Duguid but he hooked his effort wide. The Broch levelled in the 74th minute when good work from substitute Graham Johnston created an opening before the ball was played deep into the back post for Paul Campbell to ram home his third goal in four games. Two minutes later Campbell found Marc Dickson with a pass but the full back shot straight a the home sides keeper. Huntly had a chance on 78 minutes when a ball into the Broch box found Cruickshank and he outmuscled his defender but Joe Barbour saved from point blank range. Two minutes later the visitors took the lead when the home defence had two chances to clear the ball, before substitute Aidan Combe sent a shot into the far corner after more good work from Johnston and Campbell. With four minutes of normal time remaining Huntly got the ball into the opposition box and Alexander Thoirs took a touch before finding the bottom corner as Joe Barbour looked to have let the ball through his hands. Three minutes into stoppage time, Thoirs looked to have been taken down outside the box but Referee Craig Wilson awarded a penalty for the home side. Thoirs stepped up himself only for Barbour to turn the player’s spot kick away. The Broch couldn’t create a final chance before the referee blew the final whistle. Full Time: Huntly 2-2 Fraserburgh Huntly: Andrew Pennycook, Glenn Murison, Darren Wood, Sean Croll, Mark Lawson, Philip Duncan (Neale Allan 71), Aaron Scoular, James Duguid (Alexander Thoirs 54), Matthew McDonald, Ian Cruickshank, Neale Davidson. The team that began the season was probably the strongest squad we’d had for a long time, with the arrival of Bertie Bowie from the Youth Centre and William Ritchie (Baxter) a prolific scorer with the Youth Centre. Johnny Massie was also available again, but disaster truck early in the season, at Elgin. With the Broch 1-0 down to a Gerry Graham strike, Baxter was carried off with a broken leg on 40 minutes with G. Catto replacing him. Gilbert made it 2-0 after half time and further strikes including a double by Thom made the final score 5-0. It was a bad day all round and, sadly for Baxter he never fully recovered from that break and returned to playing amateur. A 4-2 defeat followed in the first leg of the League Cup at Christie Park with Ally Fordyce and Bert Innes scoring for the Broch against Huntly. A 7-1 win in the next game against Rothes was just what the doctor ordered with Bertie Bowie scoring four and Bert Innes a double with Dave McKenzie

netting the other one. The Broch then played Huntly in the second leg of the League Cup in midweek. The home side had all the possession but couldn’t make it count and Huntly broke away to finish the tie 1-0 and 5-2 on aggregate. That was followed by a 3-0 defeat at Dingwall against Ross County. A win over Forres Mechanics at home by the same scored cheered things up with Jimmy Noble scoring a brace and Bert Innes got the other goal. The return League game against Elgin City at Bellslea saw a 4-2 defeat despite goals from Bert Bowie and Ally Fordyce. A home tie in the Qualifying Cup against Caledonian wasn’t exactly a good draw and so it proved as the visitors handed out a 4-0 drubbing with Jim Lynas hitting a double for the visitors. The teams were – Broch: Massie, Whyte, G. Noble, McCombie, McCann, Duthie, McKenzie, J. Noble, Fordyce, Innes, Bowie. Caley: McKenzie, Bennet, R. Noble, Neild, Pressley, Anderson, Park, Allan, Johnston, Lynas, Fyfe. With guys like Donald Park, Chic Allan, Dave Johnston and Allan Pressley in the Caley team that day it was like men against boys. The following week we beat Clach 6-4 at home with Bertie Bowie netting a hat-trick. Bell and Gilles had put Clach 2-0 up before Bowie pulled one back on 30 minutes. Fordyce made it 2-2 ten minutes later and Bowie scored again just before the break to make it 3-2. Into the second half and Fordyce got his second (4-2) before Billy Thomson got in the act to make it 5-2. Billy Thomson (Ellon) for Clach pulled one back but Bertie Bowie restored the Broch’s 3 goal lead. Gilles ended the scoring at 6-4. Oh for a few more games like that now!! The referee that day was Billy Christie. When he ran the line at the Bellslea stand side any decision that went the Broch’s way had someone shouting “that’s your fry safe this week”. A fry is a local saying for a parcel of fish!! On their travels Deveronvale were then beaten 4-1 with doubles from Dave McKenzie and Bertie Bowie but that was followed by a 5-3 reverse at Keith despite Ally Fordyce’s double and John “Towsie” Duthie scoring for the Broch. A home win by 4-1 over Nairn County saw another hat-trick from Bertie Bowie with Ally Fordyce adding a fourth. George Bruce then rescued a point in the 1-1 draw at home to Buckie Thistle before the Broch handed out a 5-1 thrashing at Rothes with Dave McKenzie (2), Bertie Bowie, Ally Fordyce and Jimmy Noble all on the scoresheet. Two defeats without scoring followed 1-0 away to Lossiemouth and 2-0 at home to Keith which saw the Maroons complete a league double over the Broch. The Broch did get revenge over Lossiemouth with a 3-1 victory at Bellslea thanks to strikes from Bertie Bowie, Kenny Roger and Jimmy Noble. A week later The Broch had Freddie O’ Brian playing up front in the number 10 shirt. With the score tied at 1-1 (Bertie Bowie having scored for the Broch), Freddie put the Broch 2-1 up with a diving header. After half time goalkeeper Massie was injured and O’ Brian returned to his rightful place in goals. The Broch went on to win 3-2 thanks to Dave McKenzie’s vital counter. The following week at Buckie, Freddie played in goal and saved a penalty in a 1-0 win thanks to Ally Fordyce’s goal. A player profile in the Green Final at the time read. “Freddie has a bright future” but the following week he was lifted for fighting at Rosehearty!!

Forsyth, Catto, G.Noble, Roger, McCann, Duthie, B. Massie, J. Noble, Fordyce, McKenzie, Bowman. (This could have been Bowie and the match report wrong), sub: Watt. The Broch’s scorers were Fordyce (50 & 57), McKenzie (68) and McCann (73). That was followed by a 3-1 defeat at Huntly with the home side in charitable mood scoring the Broch's goal. McCann gave a debut to a promising Youth Centre lad Sandy Souter. However a stupid rule in the amateurs meant you couldn’t return if you played more than three games for the Broch which spoiled a lot of chances for promising young players. The League season ended with a 4-1 victory over Brora Rangers at home with John “Towsie” Duthie netting a double and Jimmy Noble and Dave McKenzie the others before the final game at Clach saw a 4-1 defeat with Bertie Bowie notching the Broch’s consolation. The end of season saw two other cup competitions. First up was the Bells Cup bringing a 3-1 win over Aberdeen University with Brian McCann, Jimmy Noble and Ally Fordyce netting. The next round saw another home tie this time against Deveronvale with a goal that keeper O’ Brian will want to forget. Sandison crossed to the back post on 70 minutes and it looked like the keeper had it covered when it dipped and dropped into the net. The a poor goal kick from O’ Brian went straight to Sandison who hit it first time over the Broch custodian into the net for Vale’s second goal. Freddie was heard to say “I’m Needing off!!” The Drybrough Cup featured 8 teams who had scored the most goals. The Broch faced Keith in the first round and progressed thanks to Ian Sharp’s goal. The semi final against Brora Rangers was at Bellslea and Ally Fordyce and the newly signed Brian Newlands delighted the crowd of 1200 with a 2-0 win. The final against Elgin City was held at wait for it Borough Briggs, Elgin!! A large travelling support came from the Broch and saw a cracker. Graham gave the home side the lead on 19 minutes but Lawrie failed to hold a McKenzie cross and Bowie slammed it home. McIntosh headed home powerfully to give the home side a half time advantage. Graham then doubled Elgin’s lead from the spot before both sides were reduced to ten men after McCann and Nicol squared up to each other. Fordyce pulled one back for the Broch but it wasn’t enough and Elgin won the Cup. Charlie Duncan’s Inverness Thistle won the title scoring 114 goals in the process.

The Broch’s three game winning run was brought to an end by Caley who escaped the Bellslea with a 2-1 win despite another Bertie Bowie goal. The festive period arrived in the form of a 2-0 win at Recreation Park in the first of the two local derbies against Peterhead with Jimmy Noble and Bertie Bowie scoring and keeper O’ Brian outstanding in goal. The teams for that Xmas Day fixture were – Peterhead: Connell, Duthie, Ross, McRae, Anderson, Pirie, Hunter, W. Miller, Newlands (Morris), Kerr. Broch: O’ Brian, Whyte, G. Noble, Sharp, McCann, Duthie, McKenzie, J. Noble, Fordyce, Roger, Bowie. Sub: Catto. The following Monday after the New Year festivities had passed The Bloo Toon exacted revenge with a 3-1 win at Bellslea, Willie Miller netting a double. Jimmy Noble got the Broch’s goal. Another tragedy hit the people of the Broch that year when the fishing boat, “Nautilus” sank with the loss of seven crew members. All of them were local lads. It puts life into perspective doesn’t it? The Broch got back on the winning trail with a 3-1 success at Nairn County with Ally Fordyce (2) and Bertie Bowie scoring. That was followed by a 3-0 win at Forres Mechanics thanks to Bertie Bowie, Ally Fordyce and Dave McKenzie goals. A third win on the bounce at home to Ross County by a 3-1 scoreline which saw Kenny Roger, Ian Sharp and Jimmy Noble all on the scoresheet. Bertie Bowie’s goal scoring exploits were attracting the attention of a few other clubs. Inverness Thistle, Dundee United and Cardiff City were having him watched. Another striker was Jim Crawford (Craffie). He made his debut against Caley in a game that ended another 3 game winning run by the Broch. Dave Johnston scored a double in a 4-1 victory for the Inverness side with Dave McKenzie the Broch’s scorer. Bertie Bowie was off on trial at Cardiff City but returned for the 3-0 reverse at Inverness Thistle. That match started in sensational fashion with McCann colliding with a barrier. The Broch player was off the pitch for a full 10 minutes before recovering and returning to the fray. The visitors were soon back down to ten men though when Roger was ordered off after an off the ball incident. Then with the Broch trailing 2-0, Stephen crossed when the ball was at least a yard over the byline, from which McDonald headed home. The Broch assumed the ball was out and the keeper placed the ball down for a goal kick only for the referee to point to the centre spot! In between those games the Broch suffered a 3-2 reverse at home to Huntly with Bertie Bowie and Dave McKenzie strikes not enough for the Broch. A 2-1 win against Keith in the first round of the Aberdeenshire Cup followed with Ally Fordyce scoring and Bertie Bowie hitting the winner for his 20th of the season. The same payer was on the scoresheet a week later at home to Inverness Thistle but couldn’t prevent the Broch slipping to a 2-1 defeat. Next was a semi final trip to Peterhead who were looking to win the famous old trophy for a fifth year in a row. The Broch led 1-0 until the 83rd minute through an Ally Fordyce strike but Kerr struck two late goals to put the home side through to the final. The following week saw another classic with the Broch 4-0 down at half time to Brora, but they fought back to earn a 4-4 draw. As usual there were a number of call offs for the trip to Brora and the Broch lined up as follows -

Appearances: 53; Goals: 8 Graham Johnston, Forward, Age 29: Graham played for Scotland Schoolboys and has the capability to play in any position. Scored his first goal for the club at Keith last April and notched his first goal at Bellslea Park against Rothes which was also the club’s 7000th. Aidan has scored in each of his last three appearances for the club. Appearances: 40; Goals: 5 Paul Campbell, Forward, Age 23: Paul is a forward and has joined the Broch from Maud. He has recently returned to the squad after being away due to work commitments. Appearances: 98; Goals: 38 Mark Cowie, Manager, Age 30: Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to pastures new in April. Keith v Formartine United Keith take on title-chasing Formartine at Kynoch Park and have a doubt over Donald Fraser after he picked up a knock on Wednesday night.
