From the Social Studies Department… 1. A Special Agent from the Boston office the Federal Air Marshall Service (FAMS) visited the classrooms of Mr. Sheehan and Mr. Siner in the wake of the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9-11-01. The Special Agent spoke to the U. S. History II, Real To Reel History, and Current Events classes. He spoke to the students about various aspects of his education, training and mission. 2.The Bronco "Pink-Out". Members of the social studies department (Mr. Sheehan, Mr. Siner and Mr. Delellis) helped to institute BHS' first "Pink Out" to bring awareness to issues associated with breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month. Mr. Sheehan and his colleagues designed the special BHS "Pink Out" shirts that were sold throughout the month. When completed, the "Pink Out" project will help BHS to raise more than one-thousand dollars ($1,000.00) for charities associated with breast cancer research, counseling and support. Anyone wishing to help support this cause can continue to order shirts through Mr. Sheehan at [email protected] until the middle of November. 3. The social studies department continues to expand its electives offerings. Some of the more popular recent additions to the curriculum include Rhode Island and Burrillville History, American Pop Culture, and Real To Reel History. The department continues to offer electives in Current Events, Psychology, Sociology, and American Government & Justice. The social studies electives offer multiple opportunities for students to fulfill 21st Century Learner Expectations, Digital Portfolio requirements, and Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations (GSE's). 4. Social studies texts and resources are now available on online. Social studies students can now access a variety of online resources outside of school. Each student can now access their textbook and other support materials from home. Students can also access Study Island and NOVAnet. These are fabulous resources that all students should be encouraged to utilize.

Homecoming: A Tribute to the Movies

Saturday, October 22, 2011

marked the culmination of the

week of Homecoming activities

that started with a parade from

Callahan School to Alumni Field.

The band was at the front of a long

line of school spirit displays that

included floats by all the classes

as well as groups representing just

about all activities in the school.

Once at the field, the Select Choir

& Band warmed up the crowd with

light and spirited selections

followed by a performance of “The

Star Spangled Banner.” The BHS

Band displayed their usual support of the team during time-outs and following their many

touchdowns. There sure is nothing like a good “Fight Cheer” to show the enthusiastic support that

the band has for the football team.

At halftime, the band marched onto the field and formed a large “B” from which they played the

“20th Century Fox Fanfare” to start their tribute to the movies. Senior Band Member Elizabeth

Diohep mustered up her best pirate impersonation to introduce the next tune, “Pirates of the

Carribean.” The band formed a “hook” which morphed to a “heart” symbolizing the varied

personalities of pirates in movies from Peter Pan’s Captain Hook to the loveable Captain Jack

Sparrow.

The finale, in keeping with the movie theme, was taken from the cult classic film, “Rocky Horror

Picture Show.” The song began with the formation of a clock face and time ticking backwards.

The hand of time was provided by Seniors Tiffany Rabideau, Ryan Wilkinson, Kerri Rainville,

Xiomara Figueroa, and Nicole Harnois. The song continued with the band dancing “The Time

Warp” then moving to form an hour glass. Then came the culmination with tap dancing by Seniors

Lindsey Rogers and Nicole Harnois. This was truly an amazing display of skill and nerve on the

band’s part.

Special thanks goes to our Drum Majors Rebecca Hudon and Julie Latendresse for all their extra

work. It was truly a massive undertaking but it paid off in the end.

Awesome Autumnfest Parade

Monday, October 10, 2011 was a school holiday

for most, but not for the BHS Band. Students

gathered at 7:00 AM to don their marching

uniforms, drill a bit, and head to Woonsocket for

the 32nd annual Autumnfest Parade. The band

was greeted all along the parade route with

grateful recognition of their marching maneuvers,

especially the reversals, and their playing. Special

thanks goes to our parent volunteers Sue Harnois,

Lynn Clark, Martha Jackson, Denise Wattendorf,

Nancy Latendresse, Barbara Hudon and Roland

Hudon who helped attend to every detail. Thanks

also to student volunteers Jacob Jackson and Jesse

Ayotte for carrying the band's banner. But the

greatest credit belongs to our Drum Majors

Rebecca Hudon and Julie Latendresse who led the

group with effortless elegance. Congratulations to

all on a job WELL DONE!

School to Career News The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) survey is under way. The Rhode Island Department of Education is surveying students interested in these areas to provide resources such as guest speakers, field trips, shadowing, etc. Any ideas should be forwarded to the SBC Coordinator at BHS. In October students visited Nichols College in Dudley, MA and the new campus of New England Tech in East Greenwich, RI . Nichols College specializes in Computer Technology and business studies along with various other career pathways. The New East Greenwich campus of NEIT is the home of the Health programs, specializing in seven career paths, and information technology. Plans are underway to visit MTTI, Johnson & Wales University and Save the Bay. Mr. Aldrich has registered a team to enter the Real World Design Challenge. This is a national challenge supported by industry and RIDE. Details will be available at a later date. Students interested in setting up a job shadow should contact Mr. Riley in the SBC Office.

BHS SADD Marches into the new school year

Homecoming

On October 22, Burrillville High School SADD made a powerful statement against destructive

decisions. As they have for over fifteen years, SADD members marched as a group in the

Homecoming Parade, representing students making healthy choices. This year SADD members

Faith Kingston, Chrystal Tuttle, Amanda Camard and Brittney Lomba brought smiles to children on

the parade route by handing out red balloons. Leading the group was sophomore Angela Aubin

and junior Marissa Fiore holding the SADD banner Following the Broncos victory at homecoming,

SADD held a bake sale at Bronco-Palooza featuring delicious homemade treats. A scarecrow

cake generously donated by Mrs. Camard, was raffled off and won by sophomore Lauren

Guilbault.

Red Ribbon Week

On October 23rd BHS SADD kicked off Red Ribbon Week by distributing ribbons to all students

and staff. Red Ribbon Week is the one of the longest running prevention campaigns in the nation.

It began as a tribute to Enrique Camarena, a drug enforcement officer who was killed in the war

against drugs. Currently the campaign focuses on people making a visual stand against illicit

drugs by wearing the ribbon. BHS students wearing ribbons during the week were rewarded with

“treats” and entered in a raffle for a prize.

ELECTIONS

SADD held elections for officers during October. Congratulations to:

Amanda Camard, President Marissa Fiore, Media Specialist

Xiomara Figueroa, Vice President Marina Lawton, Secretary

Marissa Fiore, Media Specialist Katelyn Gargano, Treasurer

SADD welcomes new members and meets most Thursdays at 2 PM in B-9

If you have recently moved to Burrillville or your child has transferred

to Burrillville High from another school district, read on...

We know how overwhelming it can be for kids to change schools. To

assist in this transition we are again offering newcomers groups for

students during the school day to orient them to what BHS has to

offer. If you signed the newcomers permission form in your

enrollment packet, your son/daughter will have a chance to speak to

one of us and may be eligible to participate in a group, as available.

If you have any questions about the Newcomers Program, please
