On occasion some words bear repeating. You may judge if the following comments do. These were made at BSK’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on August 25, 2012.

“In 1995 some of us present today participated in conversations to discuss new approaches to theological education in Kentucky and the surrounding region….Some of us in this gathering were original trustees who incorporated Baptist Seminary of Kentucky in 1996. Bob Baker, Ron Higdon, Charles Midkiff and I were among the founding trustees. While the Trustees created a new school formally and legally, most of the practical aspects would be accomplished by the group that was named the Committee for Baptist Seminary of Kentucky.

Although committee members served for various lengths of time, all made major contributions of time, energy and thought….We dreamed together, prayed together, ate together, debated together, discerned together, and finally we acted together.

Sensing the leadership of God’s Spirit, the Committee undertook a bold venture of faith by announcing in the summer of 2001 that we would launch Baptist Seminary of Kentucky. In August 2002, which represents our founding date, the first class of 14 entering students met at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Pastor, Dr. Bob Baker, and the congregation of Calvary, graciously hosted BSK and saw that we got off to a good beginning.

The core faculty consisted of Dr. Dalen Jackson, Dr. Rick Landon, Dr. Les Hill and Dr. Glenn Hinson. [Dr. Hinson could not attend the celebration because of impending heart bypass surgery; he has recovered well and hopes to team-teach at the end of this semester.]

In keeping with the spirit of those pioneering founders who began the good work of Baptist Seminary of Kentucky, we must imagine together the next ten years and beyond….Let’s Imagine Together God-called students… being formed spiritually for Jesus-like ministry…receiving sufficient scholarships as needed…studying with a committed faculty… all provided by the investment of those who are moved by God’s Spirit to continue this imaginative dream.

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky exists by the grace of God, the diligent work of our spiritual pioneers, and the various contributions of all of us gathered here. Today we remember together, we celebrate together, and we imagine together. We acknowledge the guidance of God during these first ten years and seek God’s Presence to walk with us in the coming years. Thanks be to God!”

BSK CELEBRATES TEN YEARS

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky threw a 10th anniversary party on August 25,

2012. Nearly 200 persons – students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, donors,

partners – gathered to celebrate the Seminary’s first ten years.

A video, prepared by current student Brittany Krebs, captured the heartbeat

of BSK…clergy and laity (male and female) who first envisioned a new

Baptist seminary in 1995…the first students, faculty and staff who met at

the Seminary’s first home, Calvary Baptist Church, in 2002…“shared space

and shared grace” at Lexington Theological Seminary from 2005-2010…

and the gracious welcome to the campus of Georgetown College in 2010…

partnering with the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship and Cooperative Baptist

Fellowship…500+ individuals and 50+ churches supporting BSK over the

first ten years.

The party’s theme was Remember…Celebrate…Imagine…Together.

A part of the remembering was to recognize some of those who have been

instrumental in the Seminary’s success. Presented with a copy of Sacred

Places in Kentucky were Bill Ellis, Jim Lewis, Charles Midkiff, and Tanya

Berry. Additionally, Eldred Taylor, who could not attend for health reasons,

was recognized for his commitment to a different kind of Seminary and for

blessing the establishment of an endowed chair named for him. Last but

not least, the ten-year contributions of Brad Curry as advocate, fundraiser,

and cheerleader for BSK were noted. Special gratitude was expressed for

Catherine and Brad Curry who had generously left their estate to BSK.

The joy of those attending was evident and contagious. They enjoyed the

fabulous sound of The Penny Loafers, a Southern Gospel quartet which

includes BSK alumnus Kevin Slemp. The Penny Loafers, based in Berea

KY, performed in concert later in the day and donated the proceeds to the

Seminary!

And then there was Associate Professor of Preaching at McAfee School of

Theology, Brent Younger, who had the group rolling with laughter, feeling

a deep sense of gratitude for the first ten years, and becoming excited about

the next ten years.

What a great party!

The Seminary expresses many thanks to the 10th Anniversary Committee:

Ann McMahan and Don Mantooth (co-chairs), Karen Birdwhistell, Ron

Higdon, Brittany Krebs, Debbie Moody, Martha Pumphrey, Lisa Wood.

If you would like to receive a copy of the program, please contact the

Seminary office at [email protected] or 502-863-8300. 3

A wonderful reception provided by Living Faith Baptist Fellowship, Elizabethtown, was held following the ceremony. A special thanks to the group from Roger Jasper’s church for the delicious hors d’oeuvre buffet.

The traditional graduates’ dinner was held at Faith Baptist Church in Georgetown on Friday evening, May 11th. The dinner was hosted by friends of Dr. and Mrs. Greg Earwood Dr. John Lepper of the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship spoke to the impending graduates during this time of recognition and fellowship. Scholarships provide our students with educational opportunities by making financial support available to offset the cost of tuition.

This funding is vital in our pursuit of attracting the best and brightest students to BSK.

The fall semester got off to a grand beginning with this year’s Orientation held in conjunction with the Seminary’s 10th Anniversary Celebration. Baptist Seminary of Kentucky welcomed 6 new students to the 2012-13 academic year.

The following students were recognized with academic awards and scholarships for the coming year.

Sometimes faithfulness comes in small packages and can

result in surprising generosity. Such is the case with Dr.

Bradford and Catherine Curry.

Brad learned about Baptist Seminary of Kentucky

just about the time we began

in 2002. He and Catherine

were great friends of BSK

who supported the mission

of the Seminary through

support and advocacy. As a

volunteer, Brad spent much

of the last ten years of his life focused on telling the

Seminary’s story and encouraging support from family

and friends.

With precise planning, the Curry’s estate was bequeathed

to BSK, a loving and generous gift. Brad Curry died the

day after Thanksgiving in 2011 at the age of 92. His wife

Catherine had preceded him in death.

Meet Jessica Jasper

Jessica began taking classes at BSK in 2009, but then chose to remain at home with

children while her husband, 2012 BSK graduate Roger Jasper, completed his studies.

Upon returning this semester Jessica explains, “BSK is a Seminary that focuses on the spiritual

formation of its students. That's important to me. More than anything I desire to be spiritually

transformed. Yes, receiving my M.Div. degree is of importance in regards to my career ambitions, but

the journey I take to get there is of greater importance to me. Knowing that the professors and staff are

just as concerned about the spiritual well-being of their students is why I chose BSK. BSK is more than

just a Seminary. It is, to me, the body of Christ on earth. “ Jessica, a native of Somerset,

Kentucky, and graduate of Georgetown College, is a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship

Leadership Scholar.

Meet Micah Spicer

A second year BSK student, Micah is a native of Wingo, Kentucky, and a graduate of

Campbellsville University. Because of academic excellence, he receives a BSK Scholar’s

Award, which covers the cost of his tuition. Micah serves as pastor of First Baptist

Church in Carlisle. With regard to his Seminary experience, Micah shares that, “Baptist

Seminary of Kentucky encourages personal growth, engages its students in the Kingdom of God,

and exalts Jesus as savior of the world. While the BSK faculty is second to none, the teaching

clearly emphasizes practical solutions that help students in their specific places of ministry. As a

pastor, I find myself using what I have learned, and continue to learn at BSK on a daily basis.”

We are thankful for Catherine and Brad whose ongoing

legacy is a witness to their faith in Jesus, their commit-

ment to the church, and their support of preparing

ministers of the Gospel through Baptist Seminary of

Kentucky.

We are delighted to include what members of the

family of Catherine and Brad asked that we share in

this newsletter.

The families of Dr. Bradford and Catherine Curry would like to thank everyone who made a gift to Baptist Seminary of Kentucky in their memory. There is nothing that would have made Brad happier than to know this has been done. Thank you again and may God bless you.

BSK in your estate, please contact Dr. Earwood at

LECTURER: DR. ROBIN JENSEN

Dr. Jensen is the Luce Chancellor’s Professor of the History of Christian Art and Worship

at Vanderbilt University, where she teaches courses in both the Department of the History

of Art and the Divinity School. Most of her research and publication focuses on the inter-

pretation of early Christian art and architecture in light of its theological significance, ritual

performance, and cultural context. Her focus in the Hinson Lectures will be on ancient

baptismal imagery. Lectures are free and open to the public.

1st Lecture - 11:00 to 12:15 Thomas & King Conference Center

Lunch - 12:30 (Reservations Required, Cost TBA) Georgetown College

2nd Lecture - 1:45 to 3:00

Jarrod Lopez Joins BSK Staff

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky is pleased to

announce that Jarrod Lopez will join BSK as

the Director of Admissions and Student

Recruiting on October 29.

An alumnus of Georgetown College, he is a

May 2012 graduate of the Seminary. Since graduation, Jarrod has

been working on special projects with the Kentucky Baptist Fellow-

ship. Previously, he served as an intern for the Center of Christian

Discernment at Georgetown College. We welcome Jarrod and his

wife Alex.

Everyone in the BSK community is invited to assist with recruiting.

All of us – alumni, current students, area ministers, church members,

staff, faculty, trustees – can help Jarrod be successful. This is key

for growth in the area of student enrollment. You may reach Jarrod

with the names of promising students in the Office of Admissions.

Office: 502-863-8301

Cell: 502-603-2542 or email

at [email protected].

The majority of students

who choose BSK do so

because someone

encouraged them. Do you

know someone who may be

feeling called to ministry?

Someone who wants to

strengthen their

knowledge and skills

as a faithful Christian?

If so, we ask for your help

in identifying these

interested students.

Encourage someone you

know to explore what

BSK has to offer.

Campus visits are arranged

through the

Office of Admissions
