Our new staff, students, and families are now fully acclimated to Bulldog PRIDE, and I want to remind everyone of our daily commitment at SMS to “BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE PRODUCTIVE.” We hope that our students are sharing these core values, and that they are striving to meet these expectations at home as well. We continue our practice of BARK card distribution to students to recognize & reward positive behaviors, and hun- dreds of cards have already been earned this school year. As always, we also continue to incorporate regular safety drills into our school days to prepare for any emergency situations that could arise while your child is here at SMS. Our new students have enjoyed a “Welcome” dance scheduled in September that was specifically scheduled for 6 th grade students. The fall sports season has recently concluded for all of our teams. Our volleyball team was recently selected and is busy getting ready to begin their regular season games soon. Looking ahead, tryouts for boys’ basketball and wrestling will begin on January 6 after the winter break. Our music students are making preparations for their up- coming concerts, with the 6 th grade musicians getting in an early concert in November prior to the 7 th and 8 th grade concerts in December. Some of our musicians in 6 th & 8 th grade will also be performing at our annual Veterans Day Tribute on November 11 at 10 a.m. in the SMS auditorium, while the 7 th grade students will be enjoying a field trip to the National Marine Corps Museum at Quantico. Our library recently hosted a successful book fair for all students. In October, our PTO hosted an enjoyable Spaghetti Dinner night in the SMS cafeteria for many of our Bulldog families, and they recently concluded their annual fundraiser involving magazine subscrip- tions & cookie dough sales with amazing success. As always, we are grateful for a very active Parent-Teacher Organization at SMS that supports our school in many important ways. The students and staff wish to say “thank you” to all of our parents for your help and for your efforts during the fundraiser and other PTO events. Finally, on behalf of the staff & administration at SMS, I would like to wish all of our students & their families a peaceful, restful, and enjoyable upcoming holiday season in the days ahead. I hope that all of our Bulldogs are able to experience the true joy of this wonder- ful season. I would also hope that everyone takes some time during a busy part of the year to brighten the holiday experience for others. GO BULLDOGS! Sincerely, Lane Byrd Principal

THE BULLDOG BANNER

2019

Hello Bulldog Parents and Students,

Hard to believe, but we have already successfully completed the first 9-weeks grading period for this school year - and are almost half-

way through the second grading period. Thanksgiving is on its way! Our new staff, students, and families are now fully acclimated to

Bulldog PRIDE, and I want to remind everyone of our daily commitment at SMS to “BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE

PRODUCTIVE.” We hope that our students are shar ing these core values, and that they are str iving to meet these expectations

at home as well. We continue our practice of BARK card distribution to students to recognize & reward positive behaviors, and hun-

dreds of cards have already been earned this school year. As always, we also continue to incorporate regular safety drills into our school

days to prepare for any emergency situations that could arise while your child is here at SMS.

Our new students have enjoyed a “Welcome” dance scheduled in September that was specifically scheduled for 6 th grade students. The

fall sports season has recently concluded for all of our teams. Our girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer teams both finished among the top

4 teams, and both teams participated in the MS championship tournaments. The SMS football team has also finished the regular season

among the top 4 teams, qualifying for the MS football tournament games coming up at Courtland HS. Congratulations to all! Our

volleyball team was recently selected and is busy getting ready to begin their regular season games soon. Looking ahead, tryouts for

boys’ basketball and wrestling will begin on January 6 after the winter break. Our music students are making preparations for their up-

coming concerts, with the 6th grade musicians getting in an early concert in November prior to the 7th and 8th grade concerts in

December. Some of our musicians in 6th & 8th grade will also be performing at our annual Veterans Day Tribute on November 11 at 10

a.m. in the SMS auditorium, while the 7th grade students will be enjoying a field trip to the National Marine Corps Museum at Quantico.

Our library recently hosted a successful book fair for all students. In October, our PTO hosted an enjoyable Spaghetti Dinner night in

the SMS cafeteria for many of our Bulldog families, and they recently concluded their annual fundraiser involving magazine subscrip-

tions & cookie dough sales with amazing success. As always, we are grateful for a very active Parent-Teacher Organization at SMS that

supports our school in many important ways. The students and staff wish to say “thank you” to all of our parents for your help and for

your efforts during the fundraiser and other PTO events.

Finally, on behalf of the staff & administration at SMS, I would like to wish all of our students & their families a peaceful, restful, and

enjoyable upcoming holiday season in the days ahead. I hope that all of our Bulldogs are able to experience the true joy of this wonder-

ful season. I would also hope that everyone takes some time during a busy part of the year to brighten the holiday experience for others.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE

November 4th - November 15th

The NJHS is sponsoring a canned food drive.

Donations will be given to the Spotsylvania Emergency Concerns Association (SECA).

Cans are to be turned in to your HR teacher.

Thanks!

Our citation generator is Noodle Tools, which is the same one that the high schools use. This will allow more continuity

when our students go to 9th grade. Be aware, however, that some high school teachers will require students to create

citations the old-fashioned way by using a guide.

In the midst of all the technology, we never forget the power of a good book and the importance of reading. Every stu-

dent is expected to read 4 books each grading period. Some students are doing better on assessment tests because of

this and discovering books that they are enjoying. Please encourage your child to read at home and set a good example

in this area.

This year we are happy to have the following 8th grade students as our library aides: Hailey Denbo, Kennedi Graham,

Lukas Miller, Thiathylia Morton, Brayden Race, Amy Sillah, & Tyanna Smallwood. These student aides are availa-

ble to assist you in checking out your materials, finding specific books and resources, shelving books, and main-

taining a neat and clean library for everyone here at SMS.
