THE BULLDOG BANNER
2017
Hello Bulldog Parents and Students,
I find it hard to believe that we have already completed the first 9-weeks grading period for this school year! New staff, students,
and families are hopefully now acclimated to our Bulldog PRIDE here at SMS. Our daily commitment is to “BE RESPECTFUL, BE
RESPONSIBLE, and BE PRODUCTIVE.” We hope that our students are shar ing these core values, and that they are str iv-
ing to meet these expectations at home as well. We continue our practice of BARK card distribution to students to recognize & re-
ward positive behaviors, and hundreds of cards have already been earned this school year. Please know that we also continue to
incorporate regular safety drills into our school days to prepare for any emergency situations that could arise while your child is here
at SMS.
Our 6th grade students enjoyed a “Welcome” dance at the beginning of the school year, and the Athletic Department is sponsoring an
upcoming holiday dance for all grade levels on December 15 from 3-5 pm. The fall sports season has recently concluded for all of
our teams. Our girls’ soccer team, girls’ basketball team, and football team all completed successful seasons, with girls’ soccer
finishing undefeated in the regular season and football defeating TMS in the consolation game of the county football tournament.
Congratulations to all! Tryouts for boys’ basketball and wrestling began this week, and we look forward to the winter sports season.
Our music students are again busy making preparations for winter concerts in December – after some outstanding performances at
our Veterans Day Tribute on November 10 (special thanks to Deputy Curtis Padgett, our current SRO and a former member of the
Army Reserves, for being our guest speaker on Veterans Day). And new this year, our 7th grade recently enjoyed a field trip on
Veterans Day to the National Marine Corps Museum at Quantico.
Our library has hosted a successful fall book fair for students, and will host another book fair in the spring. Our PTO has concluded
their annual fundraiser involving magazine subscription & cookie dough sales. PTO also recently hosted our annual Spaghetti
Dinner/Family Photo Night at SMS, and we saw a record-high in attendance at this event by Bulldog families. Thanks to our PTO
for their continuous support of programs here at SMS. And thanks to all of our parents for your help and support during the
fundraiser and other efforts. The students and staff greatly appreciate all of these efforts.
Finally, on behalf of the staff & administration at SMS, I would like to wish all of our students & their families a peaceful, restful,
and enjoyable upcoming holiday season. As always, I encourage everyone to take some time to brighten the experience for someone
else during the holidays. GO BULLDOGS!
Sincerely,
Lane Byrd

CANNED FOOD DRIVE
November 13—December 15
The 7th Grade is sponsoring a canned food drive.
Donations will be given to the Spotsylvania Emergency Concerns Association (SECA).
The school-wide goal is 2017 cans.
Cans are to be turned in to your A1 teacher.
Please consider donating.
Thanks!
As usual, things are always changing in the library. We had an good book fair and want to thank all the parents who helped. All of our profit will go to buy books and reading incentives for our students. The spring book fair will be a BOGO fair again. Our new citation generator is Noodle Tools, which is the same one that the high schools use. This will allow more continuity when our students go to 9th grade. The library has gotten an influx of new technology and we are waiting for just a few more pieces to make these new things work. Our new items are not only fun, but can teach coding and interactive learing. We, and most other schools received the following: a Smart TV, interactive table with projector, 3D printer, Raspberry Pis (which you don't eat!), Spheros and Ozobots. In the midst of all the technology, we never forget the power of a good book and importance of read-ing. This year the Spotsy Reads program has involved many students in the school and we are constantly adding new books to our collection.
This year we are happy to have the following 8th grade students as our library aides: Brandon Archie, Jeremy
Donfack, Jerome Donfack, Chloe Frum, Briana Hayden, Nathan Lashley, Amarion Phillips, Riley Reid &
Morgan Tune. These student aides are available to assist you in checking out your materials, finding specific
books and resources, shelving books, and maintaining a neat and clean library for everyone here at SMS.

From the PTO… 11/2017
Hello Bulldog Parents!!
What an amazing start to the school year! It's hard to believe how many events we have already
tackled with the help of so many dedicated volunteers.
Our 2017 Fall Fundraiser event was better than ever! THANK YOU! Students who sold enough
items to earn the Limo Lunch at Golden Corral will be attending that spectacular event on November
9th, followed by the end of fundraiser Big Blast and VIP party, scheduled for December 7th.
The PTO Community Spaghetti Dinner was a great success. We had many students show up with
their families to enjoy the food, family photos, and performances from our talented school musicians!
Thanks to the NJHS students for serving in the kitchen, and to all of you that donated the delicious
desserts that were served that evening.
New Spirit Wear styles were introduced this year including a long sleeve shirt in both Blue and NE-
ON! And as always, the performance hoodie is a huge hit. The Bulldog students look great. Spirit
wear is always for sale, and is a great way to show your Bulldog pride at school and in the communi-
ty. Remember that every Friday is Bulldog Spirit Day!
If you would like to get more involved, but have a hard time coming in to volunteer, our Hospitality
Committee is always looking for people to donate food items for teacher appreciation, special staff
luncheons/thank-you breakfasts, and for our annual Holiday Dessert Buffet (coming up on December
14th!). We appreciate any help we can get - contact us!
Get those card dobbers ready...Bulldog Bingo is just around the bend in the new year!
Be sure to check us out on Facebook for all the latest news and upcoming event information. Our Fa-
cebook site is: Spotsylvania Middle School PTO.
Thank you again for all your support this year! It is wonderful to have so many parents and staff
working together to make a wonderful learning environment for our students and teachers. SMS
families are truly the best!
