After the great time I had with the boys from the Caen Unit of CAV I got up and headed out alone into Yorkton I stopped in to meet Rick Dawson of Harley-Davidson of Yorkton I had heard so many great things about this man that I just had to stop in

The reports of his community minded spirit and the dedication to customer service that this man and his employees exemplify were not exaggerated Although the shop is small they offer everything that any other dealer does and because of their commitment to customer service they are well loved by all who stop in

After leaving the dealership I headed out on the Trans Canada to Winnipeg where on the outer edge of town at the Flying J three guys from the Tri-Service Veterans met me

We discussed the fact that my bike was not running well and that I wanted to pick up an extra quart of Amsoil Synthetic to have in my

saddle bags just to be safe After a coffee we rode to one of the after market shops but the gent only had a full 4-liter jug on hand

One of the guys took some money I gave him and he headed off to Canadian Tire to grab a litre and would hook back up with us at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Windsor Park in Winnipeg where our fundraiserawareness ride would be leaving from

The rest of us headed off to the hotel where I checked in and off loaded some of my gear

and headed back to the parking lot to greet the riders who came out

The CMC was there in full force and Stumpy graciously agreed to be our ride captain

What a great bunch of people

Sparkle gifted me with a heart shaped pendant that she had made telling me she thought it was a fitting gift ndash a big heart for a big heart I was almost in tears

One of the guys from the Tri Service Veterans handled the registrations while I was gabbing with the riders and getting photos of them with Rita We call him Mack

The ride we took saw us go out to a favorite hangout for the riders

Skinners They serve up the most incredible hot dogs and donrsquot mind boasting about it Of course I had to take them up on their taste

challenge and oh my the hot dogs ARE amazing

The ride out there was so pretty and the ride back was just as gorgeous It always amazes me how local riders take the beauty of where they live for granted It was a common theme as I would find out Everywhere I went riders would tell me how they have taken their locations for granted until they see it through the eyes of a visitor like myself

Stumpy and his wife rode me over to the hotel so I wouldnrsquot get lost and we talked about the Winnipeg riding community and how fractured it is It appears that this too is common in the riding community Everyone thinks they are different in that department but I am here to tell you that right across this country riding clubs and events suffer from the same type of disconnect from each other

We said our goodbyes and promised to keep in touch I will be doing my part to ensure communications stay on track

In the morning I headed of to Thunder Bay I decided to bypass Dryden and head straight to my friends Dave and Violet Alderdicersquos place in Kakabeka Falls After 7 and a half hours in the saddle I was glad to arrive

As much as I love riding my bike at the end of every day it sure feels good to stop and sit on something that is not moving

I am not sure about you but I find that I have such a rush happening that it can take me 2-3 hours to settle down after a good day in the saddle

Our ride in Thunder Bay started off from the Tim Hortonrsquos on Balmoral Street ndash the same place we would a host a ride on our way backhellip

For this ride Dave agreed to be our ride captain and I am so glad One of the things I find about really good road captains is they know how to pick a speed and stay there as

much as traffic and road conditions will allow for and there is no one better at consistency in his speed than Dave

Somewhere 22 bikes and their riders and passengers (31) were present It was going to be a great ride out to the ice cream stand in Kakabeka Itrsquos one of the rides that pretty much every riding club in this region takes for their weekly ride nights They do this ride several times through out the season and I fully understand why Filled with wonderful curves rolling hills and pastoral farmland the scenery is deeply pleasing to the senses

The added bonus is WONDERFUL CREAMY soft ice cream at the end of the ride shared with good friends and companions

I was blessed to meet some fantastic people from the local HOG chapter and to get to interview them Yoursquoll have to watch Ride Like a Local on Easlink TV (You can view it through Video on Demand on their web site too) or wait until the DVDrsquos of the show come out for sale hopefully in December

We raised $315 for our cause and I spoke to

those present about why I was riding how our veterans have lost their pensions how our government is trying to quash a class action lawsuit that veterans in BC have mounted called Equitas ndash their goal to see pensions re-instated I spoke to them about how the

RCMP are now in the same boat as our veterans as of this fiscal budget they too have lost their pensions I urged them all to write their MLArsquos and MPrsquos We need this discussion to happen on both Provincial and Federal levels

When I was done my talk we just hung out for a while and enjoyed each others company

and talked about the Thunder Bay riding community and how disconnected the clubs were from each otherhmmm where have I heard that before

Violet Dave and I headed back to their place Our ride back was considerably shorter than for those who rode out from Thunder Bay

It was a wonderful evening and I was looking forward to our next ride in Thunder Bay which would take place on my return trip

I want to thank Dave and Violet for their friendship and support ndash I love you guys Staying at their place was like being at home and it felt wonderful after so many nights in hotel and motel rooms

Next stop Midland and after that Kingston and then my time in the gorgeous province of New Brunswick and man have I got stories to share from there

Kamloops Toy Run

Kamloops Downtown Kiwanis Club and local riders kicked off their 12th annual toy run on September 8th 2013

The downtown Kiwanis have been involved for 12 years organizing the toy run I spoke to Roger Parkes today and he is very thankful for the local RCMP and auxiliary police who have always been here to support the ride

We started the morning off with a pancake breakfast at 9 am at Aberdeen malls auxiliary parking lot at the south side of hillside drive This was followed by a showrsquo nrsquo shine which began at 11 am and went till 1230 pm There was a 5050 prize went to a father and son team Chris Gelling and Joe Gelling

We had 135 to 140 riders according to Roger Parkes Local volunteer outriders and local RCMP did a great job of keeping all participants safe and kickstands were up 1230 pm

This was a city wide toy run starting at Aberdeen mall to upper Sahali then to downtown core then out to Valleyveiw Drive

and then back through downtown Kamloops and over to Northshore down Fortune Drive to Westside Road with a break long enough to have some nice cold water provided by Kiwanis

Kickstands were down for ten minutes then off we rode down Tranquille Road towards airport and then finally back to Aberdeen Mall

Sally Whitson of Christmas Amalgamated was at our last stop smiling and accepting monetary donations and gifts Speaking to her she told me the Toy runs have been happening for 30 years

Total 64 k we logged that day and the weather was sunny and hot for all of the onlookers and riders absolutely beautiful day in Kamloops and all the riders bringing sunshine to children this Christmas

PRESS RELEASE Vancouver Motorcycle Toy Run Celebrates 35 years of giving on Oct 6th On Sunday October 6 2013 the British Columbia Coalition of Motorcyclists (BCCOM) in conjunction with the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau will be presenting the 35th Annual Vancouver Motorcycle Christmas Toy Run The Toy Run raises much needed toys and funds to provide underprivileged families assistance at Christmas time This event is one of the most important toy raising events in the Lower Mainland and it directly supports ten local Christmas Bureaus The ride leaves Coquitlam Centre (2929 Barnet Hwy) at 1000 am and proceeds along Barnet Hwy to Barnet Hwy North to Hastings where it ends at the PNE grounds Entry fee for riders is a new childrsquos toy wrapped in plastic (preferably a sports or learning toy) or a monetary donation

Please also remember that there are older children in need who have grown out of toys but would enjoy gifts more suitable for their age Limited commemorative pins will be available to participants

This is also great fun for families who can come out and set up on the side of the road to watch thousands of motorcycles ride by with Christmas toys strapped to them This event goes rain or shine

Well I have to say itrsquos been quite a summer I got out to a whole ton of fun events did a lot of riding for charity enjoyed time with my VRAC buddies and put a fair number of miles on the bike Up until last week I also was busy planning

to make the trek across the pond along with Belt Drive Betty to tour Ireland for a couple of weeks and that was going to be a lot of funhellip but I screwed up

Along with riding I also started playing bass again and so I figured that the pain I was feeling in my hands and forearms was due to that activity which I havenrsquot done much of for seven or eight years

So I noticed on longer rides that I was having some numbness and by the end of 4-5 hours in the saddle it was getting tough to use the front brake Not good obviously and Irsquove had carpal tunnel syndrome for years and know the signs so I decided I better put the bass down and ease up on the longer rides so I could be rested for Ireland Thatrsquos when the world went sideways because it just kept getting worse So I contacted the appropriate Doctor and discovered that my long dormant (and nearly forgotten) carpal had flared up Irsquod let it go too long and now wersquore into some serious issues

The long and the short here is that I ignored

the messages I was getting and now Irsquove screwed up my arm to the point where Belt Drive Betty is forced to look for another riding partner I have to miss out on an amazing trip and Irsquom pretty much parked for the rest of the year and enjoying acupuncture with electrical stimulation SO FUN

What Irsquom getting at here is that we often forget in the heat of the moment or the joy of riding that we have to watch out for our health while wersquore out there Not only the obvious things like muscle strains sunburn and bug bites but some of the less obvious too

On longer trips itrsquos important to pack a supply of water because not only is dehydration VERY bad for your health it causes muscle cramps and headaches both of which are detrimental to your riding skills If yoursquore on any kind of prescriptions you should take a dayrsquos supply (at least) along with you just in case you break down or get trapped by weather and canrsquot get home to your meds

For those who have diabetes keeping hydrated is a massive part of controlling blood sugars and making sure that you have meds and snacks along can literally be a lifesaver

Speaking of chronic conditions if you are a Medic Alert wearer or such thing make sure you have it along that your riding buddies know your conditions (NOT just your passenger if you have one if you go down they may not be able to speak for you) and that they know where to find an information card or braceletdogtag Make sure any such

alert devices and cards are kept up to date as well and list any and all meds yoursquore on Emergency info devices that attach to your helmet are also available if yoursquore interested you can check those out as well

Beyond all that you also need to make sure that yoursquore rested before attempting a long ride that yoursquore ready and able for the trip and that you be realistic about your health and if you cannot safely ride tell your buddies and back out I think theyrsquod rather have you alive and riding next time than take a chance on your life and those around you

In the end itrsquos my own lack of attention that cost me a trip to Ireland and created a huge concern for Belt Drive Betty and I apologize to her for that No it wasnrsquot something Irsquove had to deal with lately and the severity is a surprise but if Irsquod been more conscious of what was happening I might have avoided all this and been able to hoist a REAL Kilkenny IN Kilkenny

So ride safe ride long and ride healthy Renee I will be thinking of you on that trip and sending positive thoughts the whole time

Wardlow AB The 26th Annual Crowsnest Cross Country hosted by the Brooks Motorcycle Club and organized by CGRT sponsor David French of AampE Racing ran on the Labour Day long weekend

Sadly CGRT was not able to be represented as first year pro Ryan Linderman was still healing from a broken bone in his hand that required surgery in early August Shane Cuthbertson who has won this event numerous times suffered from an infection in his elbow and spent the weekend at home on IV antibiotics

Carrying the CGRT torch was Victoria

Hett who tested her fitness and stamina by competing in the Night Rooster and the Big Rooster both events hosted by the Pentictoin Off Road Motorcycle Club The Night Rooster is a 25 hour hare scrambles starting at 8pm

requiring lights and a deep volume of heart Victoria setup with a helmet light and a light bar grabbed the holeshot and rode into the night with the pack in tow She succumbed to pressure during the first lap and was passed but maintained her second place to the finish Drama did not

escape Victoria however as during her last lap her front brake line failed Fortunately the gap to third was sufficient for her to make it to the finish without further incident in second place Once she replaced her brake line and maintained her Valley Motosports Husaberg TE 250 Victoria lined up for the day race the Big Rooster Victoria started in fifth rode hard for over 3 hours and finished just behind her starting position in 6th

Normally battling for the lead the 25 hour event from the night before took its toll on Victoriarsquos energy levels for the day event It was a great effort from Victoria to maintain her 3 position in the series with 4 events left

Gagnon Claims Screamin Eagle Top Fuel Title

2012 UEM Superbike Twin Champion Nate Gagnon can now add the 2013 Screamin Eagle Top Fuel Championship to his resume

Arriving at the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association Season Finals presented by Blackjacks Roadhouse at Edmontons Castrol Raceway Gagnon held a narrow lead over reigning Top Fuel Champion Damian Cownden in the season standings leaving the title up for grabs during the September 7th and 8th event Despite losing to ASB Racings Mike Pelrine in the final elimination round Gagnon and his Big Kids Racing Team secured the season championship by defeating Cownden in the semi finals

Al Miles wrapped up a perfect season in the Screaminrsquo Eagle Pro Dragster division when mechanical issues kept number one qualifier Doug Casson from racing Miles in the final The accomplishments of Milesrsquo FFR Racing Team were recognized at the yearend banquet

where Miles received the Dennis Mark Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement Long time FFR crew chief Jerry Gordon was the recipient of the Wrench of the Year award as well as the Trev Deeley Memorial Award recognizing Contribution amp Dedication to Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing

In the Screaminrsquo Eagle V Rod Destroyer class Nick Allen won the Season Finals and the 2013 Western Championship by defeating Pete Thomson in the last elimination round Allen and Thomson would go head to head again in the East vs West Shootout with Allen taking the victory and an unprecedented 7th consecutive Screaminrsquo Eagle V-Rod National Title

Pro Street saw Rob Aston and Ethan Barkley reset the benchmarks for this class in Canada Trailing in the season standings Barkley left nothing in the trailer putting down his best runs of the year including a new CMDRA Pro Street Mile per Hour record of 19267

Astonrsquos response was equally impressive as he achieved new records for 18th mile ET and MPH as well as the new CMDRA Pro Street 14 mile ET record of 7429 seconds enroute to victory and his first CMDRA Pro Street Championship

Women in the Wind

I am interested in starting up a Women in the Wind (WITW) motorcycle chapter within Regina for lady riders and looking to find others who may have interest in joining as well To read about the history of WITW and see where other chapters are located the official national website is here httpwwwwomeninthewindorg This national motorcycle club has several chapters across Canada including Saskatoon Membership is open to all lady riders all makes and models of motorcycles and all levels of experience This is more about a bunch of ladies uniting to ride and socialize together

There is often an annual provincial rally and like this year (just last weekend) a bi-annual event that hosted over 200 lady riders from

across Canada and the USA in Kannaskis AB at a first class eventconference Membership within WITW does not have to be exclusive you can belong to other riding groups and clubs as well If there are enough women who are interested in finding out how this would work whatrsquos involved etchellip we will set a date to connect over coffeedrinks and discuss Expressing interest by no means commits you to joining the club The Saskatoon chapter strongly supports the creation of a Regina chapter and would help us get things rolling If you are a lady and you ride and you have interest in finding out more please email me with your name and phone number and should we get enough interest I will let you know the date to connect Gentleman if you know a lady rider that you think may be interested please pass this along

SEPTEMBER 21ST 2013 EVERYBODY IS WELCOME

On Sept 21st we will be having our annual fall Poker Run and were going to combine it with a Poker Run and Barbecue So lets all ride Want to see as many LW as Possible for this last major run of the season

We will be meeting at the Husky at 930 AM and stands up and riding out at 10 am sharp Heading to PA Shellbrook Spiritwood Glaslyn North Battleford then back to Preachers Place for a feast

First card will be drawn at the Husky 2nd one in PA third card in Spiritwood forth card in North Battleford Fifth Card at Preachers place There will be a two card draw at the end (no additional cost so everyone has a chance) Hands will be 20 bucks a hand and as many hands as you want to buy Please watch this post in case of crappy weather we may have to move the Dates around a bit

So heres your chance people Weve had an incredible time at these runs in previous years and I want to see a whole bunch of bikes roaring down the highway

Dedicated to Uncle Mac Heckbert and Grandfather Fred Heckbert Sr

Reason I was inspired to write this poem the day of the burial of my uncle HM (Mac) Heckbert in 2005 Uncle Mac fought in WWII with the 28th Field Battery Militia Unit out of Newcastle New Brunswick and received the Military Medal for his six years of service While on the front lines he took part in a poetry writing contest held through the Canadian circular called the Maple Leaf The goal was to see who could write the best poem from World War II in response to the famous World War I poem - In Flandersrsquo Fields Macrsquos father my grandfather fought near there at the Somme in World War I Mac won second prize for his poem and in his poem he takes up the chal-lenge issued in the poem lsquoIn Flanders Fieldsrsquo and takes up the torch mentioned in that poem He wrote a subsequent poem ending with another challenge to the next generation claiming the right to ask us to live as lsquofighting menrsquo if peace on earth was not yet won by the time his genera-tion passed on My poem is a response to Uncle Macrsquos challenge to keeping fighting faith alive I felt it was a divine inspiration like a spiritual gift given to me as I grieved with my father over the loss of his big brother his hero

The sky is darker this morning longer than it has beenamp the air doesnt have that comforting warmth to it Its got a bit of a bite to it you wake up faster that way I guess

No longer is there a moments hesitation amp

internal dialogue about chaps gloves or a bandana its almost automatically reached for now

The leather is slightly damp from the overnight amp feels heavier somehow more awkward cumbersome

Even the road feels different not as light free or as joyous somehow

You glance along the treeline to see that the leaves are already changing color amp you sigh- its barely September And damned if your fingers arent chilled

The ride to breakfast is as all the others comfortable pleasant easy amp you enjoy the feeling of knowing how your friends ride knowing where youre going so well there is no stress about it hearing the sounds of their bikes bounce off the rocks or guardrails

The sun is fully out when its time to leave again amp for this you are thankful

The smells are different now no more wet

earth amp dead grass but fresh hay amp lawns as people begin getting Summer things done amp Fall things started

You can smell sweetness amp popcorn from the fall fair last weekend as you rumble past the grounds amp know therell be another fair this coming weekend amp another the week after that somewhere else Its that time again

There are more riders on the highway now some wave some dont amp it is always amusing just How some wave

Makes you think of all you met this season places you saw things you didamp you wonder who youll meet next year

And you realize all of a sudden that the air is once more as dark as it was on a summers night but it is Early yet

The clouds are gathering thunder grumbles in the distance amp reluctantly you head for home going faster with each mile as the wind picks up amp the rain starts slapping at your faceSummer rain is quite different than this stuff This rain Hurts

And as the skies open up you swing off amp hurry to open the doors laughing because you win

And then you hang around in companionable silence with your bike wiping off stray water droplets listening to the ticking of the cooling metal waiting for the rain to stop pounding on the roof like a two year olds temper tantrum Weather can be Such a sore loser sometimes

And as you venture outside once more the air smells sweet amp rich amp damp amp alive you hear the water fall from the leaves hiss beneath car tires passing amp even though you fumble in the darkness to unlock your door because you never even Thought to leave a light on you are still convinced that a shorter almost-end-of-season ride is still better than no ride

lsquoSergeant Santarsquo on a mission for military families

Donrsquot be surprised to see Santa walking on the Mountain Thursday

Actually it will be Sergeant Santa who is walking from Hamilton to Port Dover to gather toys for the ldquoThank You Troops Toy Driverdquo

ldquoOur goal is make Christmas a little easier on military familiesrdquo says Randy Young presient of the Friends of Veterans Canada

Therersquos a big problem with Canadian soldiers coming home with post-traumatic stress disorder and he wants to make sure people know about it and try to help

ldquoIf we can avert that by a couple of presents underneath the tree and make somebodyrsquos

Christmas a little better who knows it could save a liferdquo says Young 52 ldquoI know it sounds dramatic but itrsquos truerdquo

Dressed in a custom-made Santa suit cut to like a combat uniform Sergeant Santa will be walking from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 163 on Limeridge Road East at Upper Wentworth down to Port Dover

Young is leaving at 10 am Thursday and will pass through Mount Hope Hagersville Caledonia and Jarvis along the way He said he expects to arrive at the Port Dover Legion in the early evening

Itrsquos a distance of about 56 kilometres Young said hersquoll be on foot most of the way but is bringing a bicycle to make up some ground when he gets too tired to keep walkingldquoItrsquos all going to be under my own steamrdquo says Young

Hersquoll spend much of the next day ringing sleigh bells and taking gifts from the bikers arriving in Port Dover for the traditional Friday the 13th gathering

The event is sort of a reverse toy run he says Instead of signing up for the run at the beginning of the ride riders are asked to sign up at the end when they get to the Port Dover Legion There riders can donate an unwrapped $25 gift (a toy for a child up to age five or an educational toy or sports equipment) or $25 cash donation

ldquoMotorcyclists are traditionally very supportive of veteransrsquo causesrdquo he notes

Sergeant Santa is the son of Santa Claus says Young He was in the North Pole Army and is now retired and helping out his dad He says children who are son or daughter of a soldier will relate to it

The Port Dover toy drive is the first of four events organized by Young and the Friends of Veterans Canada On Sept 22 there will be a classic car drive from Toronto to CFB Borden on Nov 9-10 therersquos the Toronto Christmas Motorcycle Show at the Toronto Congress Centre and in December there will be another toy run in Port Dover on Friday the 13th

Passing on a Two-Lane Road

Heres the scenario Youre cruising down a two lane road The speed limit is 55mph but theres two cagers in front of you the first of which is poking along at 40 to 45mph

The car directly in front of you has had many chances to pass the slow poke but for reasons unknown to you that driver seems content to stay behind the slow poke and tailgate instead of passing him

You glance in the rear view mirror and notice theres a parade of vehicles behind you and the cager directly behind you is too close for comfort So whats the safe thing to do

Well if youve got more patience than me the safest thing to do would be to slow down enough to give yourself plenty of distance between the car directly in front of you and keep a close eye on the car tail gating you

The second option is to pass the car in front and the slow poke and get away from the entire pack of four wheelers However before I make the pass Im going to look out for a few things

Number one oncoming traffic If the

oncoming lane is clear and there is no double yellow line Ill next look for intersecting streets on the left Keep in mind that if a vehicle is at a side street waiting to pull out that driver will be looking to his left for oncoming traffic not to his right where youll be accelerating to make your pass

Also keep in mind the intersecting road on your left might just be the street the slow poke is looking for Theres always the chance that hell suddenly jam on his brakes and make his left just as youre passing and youll wind up t-boning him at a high rate of speed

If that happens the slow poke would be at fault in the crash but thats not going to help you Another thing to watch out for as you pull out to pass is the car directly in front of you may suddenly decide to make a pass the same time you do and then theres the possibility that one of the parade of vehicles behind you might be trying to pass the entire line of vehicles

Sounds pretty complicated doesnt it Heres the safest way to make the pass First make sure there are no intersecting streets put on your left signal light to let the drivers behind you know youre about to make your move

Look in the rear view mirror to make sure no one else is about to pass flash your lights or toot the horn to let the driver in front know youre coming around then open the throttle and pass as fast as you can Make sure to

Summer Run To Chewelah

Early in June this year my good buddy Al invited me on a ride he had done before with some old friends to Chewelah Washington This yearrsquos ride was to be known as the Duffy Classic II named in honour of the originator

Several years earlier Duffy had scouted out an area of Washington State that was rife with great motorcycle roads Not much traffic amp lots of corners is hard to beat for anyone especially for a Calgarian whose favourite local rides were to be devastated within weeks due to the flood disaster I was happy that I had agreed to go even though due to work considerations I had to make it a quick turn around

The early morning of August 9th had weather reports threatening more rain in Southern Alberta (imagine that) and it certainly looked like they were correct with ominous dark skies to the south of Calgary We hit the 2 highway southbound for Nanton I was wishing I had put a liner back in my jacket or at least had the forethought my riding partner had shown in putting a sweatshirt under his own Damn cold for August and you would think a native would know better

I was feeling much better about things once we were able to turn off on Hwy533 for the jaunt through the Porcupine Hills to connect to Hwy 22 south The wind was really getting up but still fairly tolerable I always see something new on this stretch amp this morning was no exception as I spotted probably the biggest whitetail buck I had ever seen laying

down by some scrub about 75 yards off the road I was feeling pretty good about my eagle eye until I rode past another buck standing in the ditch watching me about a half mile up I hadnrsquot spotted him until I was almost there I was back in concentrate mode immediately

Once we got onto 22 south we settled back into making miles while battling gale force winds Wind is a constant in this country but it was exceptional that morning and didnrsquot calm down until we got closer to the Crowsnest and Hwy 3 west After fueling up both bikes amp bellies in Blairmore we got back on the road next stop Cranbrook

After being slowed down for the massive amount of flood repair work around Sparwood we noticed it warming up considerably and by the time we got to Starbucks in Cranbrook I was cooking in my jacket After the cooling effects of a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino and a change to just a vest over the T-shirt I was ready to roll

Back onto Hwy 3 for a nice ride through Moyie amp past the lake then turning south onto 95 for the border at Kingsgate We noted at the time the heavy traffic coming North on a Friday and thought maybe another crossing on a Sunday may be a better choice Down 95 closer to Bonners Ferry we could tell we were in Idaho when we started spotting helmetless riders Having not been through this stretch for several years I was surprised at the changes along the route to Sandpoint with the strip mall fever they have suffered from Sandpoint being a summer tourist Mecca made travel through town a bit of a process but we made our way downtown to grab a refreshment from a local shop of a nice cold Italian soda poked our heads in a couple of touristy type shops amp mounted up again Herersquos where the trip really began for me with roads never travelled We made our way west on 2 along the Priest

River through several small towns noticing a few different groups of riders heading the same direction Once we got to Newport is where we lost them with 2 turning south to Spokane amp Al turning north onto 20 which continues along the Priest River We continued on to Usk where you turn west on Beeman Rd then Mckenzie Rd leads you to the Flowery Trail Road which is a wonderful stretch of curves amp switchbacks over a mountain range right into Chewelah

Unfortunately we had heard they were doing some work on this road but didnrsquot realize the extent It was freshly chipped for asphalt re-work virtually from the summit all the way down the west side Likely not too bad for a sport touring model but a Nomad is hard to power slide through spots of piled up gravel in corners especially under steep gravitational pull

I was a bit tuckered pulling through town so was glad to check into the Nordlig which is a biker friendly motel shower up and

meet Dave Duffy amp John for dinner and a refreshment or two at the Sportsmens Bar amp Grill These three gents had arrived the night before amp had a full day of riding as Al amp I were travelling Unfortunately John had to head home to Cheney and a weekend of work The next day we were up early amp grabbing breakfast after a storm that the locals were talking about had passed through the night before Hadnrsquot heard a thing From there we headed up 395 to the Addy Gifford Rd and started our day of hard cruising From Gifford take 25 south until just past Fruitland you can enter the Spokane Indian Reservation at Mudget Lake Road which

eventually gets on to the West End amp Wellpinit Rd This are is fabulous for tight turns amp plenty of them Always good to be cautious first time through this type of road with some corners sneaking up tighter than they look From there you end up on Little Falls Rd which in turn hooks into 231 north to 291 east Along here yoursquoll find the Long Lake Dam which when it was built in 1915 was the largest hydroelectric dam in the world An amazing piece of architecture built around a natural mountain bend From there into Tumtum amp a quick lunch in an air conditioned

Fuel up amp off we head back over some of the same roads we came down on and north on 25 to the Gifford-Inchelium Ferry This is a free ferry crossing Lake Roosevelt which is a dammed up portion of the Columbia The ride over was a refreshing break from the heat

After a quick hydration stop in Inchelium we turned north on 3 (Inchelium Hwy) to 395 over the bridge towards Kettle Falls turning south on 25 again Starting to think about

a shower amp supper again since itrsquos almost 6PM but wait therersquos more mountain curves coming Turning east onto the Orrin-Rice Rd we once again cut through the Selkirk mountains onto the Marble Valley Basin Road

Onto 395 with a heavy throttle to the hotel then capped off the day with a walk to town amp a nice Italian dinner That was a long day for an old fella

The next morning we decided to have breakfast in Colville amp found an interesting diner that shares a building with a Kung Fu studio amp the local funeral parlourcrematorium

From there we parted ways with Duffy amp Dave headed west amp us taking the Colville-Tiger Rd east to 31 A lovely ride through cool green mountains with some parts in the shade still wet from the rain the night before We got our last cheap premium fuel in Ione and headed north for the border through Metaline Falls and herersquos where it went south so to speak I was following Al amp noticed him get into a 270 degree corner that was slightly canted away from the turn Although not going very fast at all he got the floorboards in a little too deep on the third scrape and un-weighted the rear

With the bike sliding out he tried to correct amp ended up going over high side with the bike pushing him luckily into the sandy ditch I had to pull past and park then ran back to check on Al first He groaned as he rolled over I checked his eyes first before bones but knew he wasnrsquot too bad right away

A couple of choice words and he was up After recruiting a father son team to help right the bike from a poor position in the ditch we started a tape amp bungee job on some of the damage After a quick road test which proved it was running straight we were off to the border crossing at Nelway

I think you could almost drop a Nomad off a

building amp have cosmetic damage only they are a tank My biggest eye opener in this low speed seemingly light crash was the damage done to boots chaps jacket amp helmet There is a reason we wear them even when hot After this incident the ride home seemed fairly mundane other than Al stiffening up somewhat and the 1-12 hours of clutch riding in traffic to get through the Sparwood road re-construction That was brutal I was home safe about 930 PM dreading the Monday workload already It was a great weekend that I will definitely do again Dan CallahanCalgary Alberta

ldquoCalm down calm downrdquo said his mother-in-law ldquoTherersquos something very odd about that She would never do such a thing

Support Our Troops Ride

Did you ever have a dream where you planned some huge party and spent weeks and weeks and weeks planning and organizing and then the big day comes and no one shows up but then you wake up realize it was all a dream and everything is OK Even though it was only a dream and not real you feel relieved

Well from about Wednesday September 4 to about 10 am on Saturday September 7 I felt like I was stuck in the part of the dream where it was party time and I was going room to room to room looking for people wondering where everyone was and getting more panicked and harried with every step and every empty room

You see as a member of 2CAV Beaumont Hamel and a member of the organizing committee for the Support Our Troops Ride I felt like I was planning this huge party and after inviting just about everyone in the city all I could do was sit back and wait and hope that people showed up It was nerve wracking

A couple of sleepless nights leading up to the big day wondering ldquowhat happens if no one shows up What if people donrsquot understand how important this isrdquo

The Support Our Troops Ride has been going on for almost 10 years here on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and in 2011 the Health Care Foundation heard about our wantdesireplan to put in a garden at the Caribou

Veterans Pavilion and asked to partner with us to help raise the funds

The idea for The Jim Shields Memorial Garden started out several years ago as pretty much a basic garden some place pretty for the residents of the Veterans Pavilion to lsquohang outrdquo but itrsquos not that anymore

This is not just any garden This is a very specific specialized garden They call it a dementia garden It will provide a specialized environment specifically designed for people with various levels of cognitive impairment due to dementia and its related conditions

Well thatrsquos the official description for us in Beaumont Hamel it lets us provide a safe welcoming beautiful space for the veterans residing at the pavilion their families and the staff For us that was important

Well with my anxiety growing by the minute I stood in the parking lot of CFS St Johnrsquos Drill Hall and watched the motorcycles arrivehellip one at a time in groups of two three sixhellip it was very moving for me

With every set of wheels that rolled on the parking lot came the realization that there was someone else who felt that what we were doing was important that it mattered that the veterans matter For me that was important

With each set of wheels came one more small effort As individuals our efforts are small but when you take all the small efforts and put them together when people work together great things happen The 2013 Support the Troops Ride saw 117 bikes riding and raised $26577 for the garden That is important

We all like to think that what we do is important that it matters that it will make a difference Most of us will never get to see if something we did mattered or made a difference thatrsquos just life Irsquod like to think that come the summer of 2014 when the Jim Shields Memorial Garden is in full bloom that I will get a chance to sneak a peak through the fence and see the difference that hundreds of little efforts made to the Veterans because they are important

A Rock Solid FoundationThe last time I watched a ldquoBiker Build-offrdquo show on tv I was amazed at the incredible craftsmanship skill and attention to detail that was exhibited by the builders

Everything from the way parts

and pieces obvious to the eye and forever hidden inside or behind something else were custom made and uniquely precise and absolutely necessary for the eventual operation of the motorcycle

It seems the special touches like ldquoout of sightrdquo handlebars unusual shaped tanks and fenders and of course some wicked and totally lsquosickrsquo paint jobs and graphics separate the men from the boys when it comes to creating and building custom motorcycles Talk about making a statement these people know their craft and they set the bar high for others in their industry

Itrsquos interesting to note that at the end of the day without a solid frame a solid foundation these bikes would be nothing but an ornament Without a solid secure frame imagine what would happen the first time the throttle was opened up and the rider hit twisties at 140 K

You know life isnrsquot any different We read

in ldquoOur Ownerrsquos Manual for Liferdquo (bible) about a building our lives on a rockmdasha solid foundation And not on the sand In Matthew chapter seven verses 24 ndash 27 we read 24 ldquoAnyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise like a person who builds a house on solid rock 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house it wonrsquot collapse because it is built on bedrock 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesnrsquot obey it is foolish like a person who builds a house on sand 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house it will collapse with a mighty crashrdquo

So you see just like a custom motorcycle needs a solid foundation for it to run properly and survive we also need a rock solid foundation To withstand all that this life will throw at us and assault us with Everything from health issues to employment finance situations addictions broken relationships loss depression and a myriad of other trials

that we all seem to go through at one time or another

So today can I encourage you to consider building your life on the rock that is Jesus Christ And if Jesus is already your solid foundation may you continue on that path and be blessed in all situations knowing that God has your back and he is in control

and headed back to the parking lot to greet the riders who came out

The CMC was there in full force and Stumpy graciously agreed to be our ride captain

What a great bunch of people

Sparkle gifted me with a heart shaped pendant that she had made telling me she thought it was a fitting gift ndash a big heart for a big heart I was almost in tears

One of the guys from the Tri Service Veterans handled the registrations while I was gabbing with the riders and getting photos of them with Rita We call him Mack

The ride we took saw us go out to a favorite hangout for the riders

Skinners They serve up the most incredible hot dogs and donrsquot mind boasting about it Of course I had to take them up on their taste

challenge and oh my the hot dogs ARE amazing

The ride out there was so pretty and the ride back was just as gorgeous It always amazes me how local riders take the beauty of where they live for granted It was a common theme as I would find out Everywhere I went riders would tell me how they have taken their locations for granted until they see it through the eyes of a visitor like myself
