Getting Ready for Resurrection

Lent is the season of the church year in which followers of Jesus are

encouraged to prepare their hearts for Easter through Bible reading and

prayer, through self-examination and repentance, and through fasting from

things that would distract us from the Lord. Here at Calvary, the observance

of Lent will begin on February 14th with an Ash Wednesday service. This

time of worship will be held in the sanctuary at 6:30 in the evening and will

feature interactive prayer stations – along with an opportunity for

worshipers to receive the imposition of ashes as a sign of repentance. In the

Sundays that follow, our pastor will be sharing a series of sermons that he’s

calling “Giving Up.” These messages will focus not on the simple pleasures

that we sometimes “give up” for Lent, like drinking coffee or eating

chocolate – but on the habits and attitudes that the Lord invites us to give

up as He remakes us in the image of Christ. We hope you can join us as we

get ready to celebrate resurrection power.

Youth Mission Trip to Belize

This summer—from July 29 to August 4—Calvary's youth will be traveling to Belize to continue our

partnership with Pastor Cal and the village of Copper Bank. In the months leading up to that trip, our youth

will sponsor both fundraising lunches and our annual Port-A-Pit Chicken event so that our students can

participate in that foreign mission experience. We invite our church family to join us for the first of these

lunches on Sunday, February 18th at noon (right after the traditional service). Please plan to come out and

support our young people.

In addition to the fundraising events, we are also seeking donations that will make it possible for this year's

youth mission team to get to Belize. If you wish to make a donation, please give it directly to Alex Bracey,

(instead of placing in the offering plate). This will insure that your gift gets deposited in the proper

account.

Finally, and most importantly, we ask that everyone in our Calvary family begin praying for our 2018 Belize

Mission Team. Pray for safe travel; pray for Copper Bank, Pastor Cal, and his family. But even more, pray that

the hearts of all who participate in this experience will be drawn closer to Christ Jesus.

Calvary’s Missionaries to Chad to Lead Worship

Andy and Cari Robertson will be our special guests for worship on Sunday, February 18th. For the past six

years, the Robertsons have been serving as medical missionaries in the Central African nation of Chad; and

during those years, we have supported them with our prayers and financial gifts. Now that they’re back in

the states on “home assignment,” we’re looking forward to renewing our friendship and learning more

about their ministry. On the morning of their visit, Andy and Cari will speak in worship. They will also lead a

dialogue time in the fellowship hall during the Sunday School hour, to which everyone is invited.

Because we would like to present Andy and Cari with an additional show of support while they’re with us,

we will be receiving a special offering for their ministry on Sunday, February 4th and Sunday, February 11th.

If you’d like to contribute, please mark your gift “Robertsons.”

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’” Mark 16:15

Fellowship and Growth

JOY Group

The next JOY (Just Older Youth) luncheon will be Wednesday, February 7th at Little Richards BBQ. Please join us at noon and bring a friend! For more information, please contact Teresa Martin.

GriefShare

The GriefShare support group (facilitated by Sylvia Gentry) will resume meeting on Monday, February 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the

Chapel. This group welcomes anyone who seeks help and encouragement after the death of a spouse, child, family member, or

friend. You’ll find a warm, caring environment with three key components: video seminar, group discussion and a personal

workbook. This session will conclude on April 30th.

Women’s Evening Bible Study

What is the deep cry of your heart? The ache that keeps you up at night? The prayer you keep repeating? Jesus wants to

help you walk through this and know the fullness of Him. Join us for a women’s Bible study on Sunday nights at 5:30 p.m.

beginning February 11th in the fellowship hall. The study is based on the book, "Finding I Am," by author, speaker and

president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa TerKeurst Books are available now for this study; please contact Carol Lowe or Kim

Morrison for details.

New Mid-Week Options

The second winter session of our Mid-Week Ministry will begin on Wednesday, February 21st and will run through

Wednesday, March 21st. A snack supper will be served in the Fellowship Hall, beginning at 5:45 PM, and Christian Growth

opportunities for all ages will begin at 6:15. The adult study options for this session will be:

No Camping (Led by Maggie Lowe): Fear is a place we all walk through. As Christians however, we cannot set up camp

there. Come see what the Bible has to say about fear in our lives and the tools God has given us to defeat it. “God has

not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control” (2 Tim. 1:7).

Be Rich (Led by Ralph Hiatt): In this series, Andy Stanley looks at the early Christians, showing that generosity was the

hallmark of the early church. He explores 1 Timothy 6:18, biblically redefines what wealth is, how to use it, and helps us

practice being rich. Most of us are richer than we think. We just aren't very good at it. Discover that it's not what you

have that matters; it's what you do with what you have that will count for you or against you in the kingdom of heaven.

Fresh Hope

Our Fresh Hope peer support group led by David Stone will be starting on February 11th. It is a

unique approach that brings those with mental health issues into the same peer group as loved

ones. It is for anyone who is dealing with a mental health challenge – it doesn’t have to be a

diagnosed condition. The class will be an ongoing support group. Everyone is welcome to join us

for as long as they wish or continuing until they feel their needs have been met.

The Fresh Hope model is on having a thriving life, not just surviving. It is more than coping, but

about being fully alive and in God’s grace. It is a scripture based wellness model that looks at the physical, spiritual, mental

and emotional areas of life. The purpose for those who attend is to know:

• You are not alone in this – Christ and others are with you.

• Sharing your stories and challenges help release the stigma and burden your situation may cause.

• Good counsel can come from others who also deal with the same kind of issue with which you deal.

We ask our Calvary family to pray for this new ministry and that we will reach any who have needs that can be served

through Fresh Hope.
